• Tracking down Data Execution

  I have some malware infecting one of our machines at home. It first showed up as winulty.exe. After investigating, I am of the opinion that winulty.exe itself is an uninfected file but is being modified after it has loaded into memory. Turning on Data Execution Prevention for all processes and services has confirmed this to be true. How do I track down the process responsible for this? I've used File Monitor from sysinternals.com to monitor winulty.exe and see this being accessed by the svchost.exe instance hosting most of the system services and also by dfrgntfs.exe. How do I know which service or which DLL has been infected?

  I was seeing a lot of entries in the eventlog: The Windows Filtering Platform has permitted a connection. Application Information: Process ID: 4 Application Name: System Network Information: Direction: Inbound Source Address: 10.xxx.xxx.xxx Source Port: 80 Destination Address: 10.xxx.xxx.xxx Destination Port: 31773 Protocol: 6 Filter Information: Filter Run-Time ID: 67903 Layer Name: Receive/Accept Layer Run-Time ID: 44 We have a loadbalancer which checks every second to see if the application is still running (a health check). The logs contain large amounts of this kind of entries, which makes the Event Viewer slow and it's difficult to find the more interesting logs. How do I make sure these messages don't end up in the event logs?

• Need to run a .sh as root on boot or login

  Still new with linux and running ubuntu 12.10 I have a wireless stick (ae2500) which has known issues that has been partially solved using ndiswrapper. However, to use it I must run the same scripts every time I reboot, effectively uninstalling and reinstalling the driver. I made a .sh file to run every time to make it easy, but I must do the sudo login everytime. There are three solutions I am looking for and although not all are necessary to solve this particular problem, I would still like to know them all for learning purposes. run scripts or file.sh on boot (as well as other programs) run scripts or file.sh automatically with root privileges make the install permanent so as not to have to go through the process every time. Any additional information that can help me regarding this that I did not think to ask (including streamlining my commands), or general knowledge, would be greatly appreciated. Following are the contents of the file. • MySQL Server Not Starting on Boot

  I have installed MySQL on a RHEL 5 server and I'm wanting to set it up so that the server starts on boot. I've ran the "chkconfig --list mysqld" command and it's currently running on levels 3, 4 and 5. However, when I reboot the server, no mysqld process is started.   how can i install the bluetooth driver in this laptop in windows 7. The installation process tells me that i need to activate the bluetooth device to continue, but how can i activate if till that moment the device doesn't exist. There isn't any button or switch to activate the device manually. Edited: it's the np-r430 model. I read somewhere (a users forum, not official info) that for Chile and Argentina this models doesn't have built in the bluetooth device, but the US models have it. • How to close all background processes in unix?

  I have something like: cd project && python manage.py runserver & cd utilities && ./coffee_auto_compiler.py And I want both of them to close on Ctrl-C (or some other command). How can I accomplish that? EDIT: I tried using jobs -x kill and kill `jobs -p `, but it doesn't seem to kill what I need. Here is what I mean: moon 8119 0.0 0.0 7556 3008 pts/0 S 13:17 0:00 /bin/bash moon 8120 6.8 0.4 24568 18928 pts/0 S 13:17 0:00 python manage.py runserver jobs -p give me just process 8119, but I also need to close 8120, since it's the thing that the first command opened. • How does one find out which application is associated with an indicator icon in Ubuntu 12.04?

  It is trivial to do this in Ubuntu 10.04. The question is specific to Ubuntu 12.04. This has nothing to do (does it?) with right click. How can an indicator's icon in Ubuntu 12.04 be matched with the program responsible for it's manifestation on the top panel? A list of running applications can include all processes using System Monitor. How is the correct matching process found for an indicator? (the examination of SM points out a rather poignant factor in the faster depletion and shortened run time on battery - the ambient quiescent CPU rate in 12.04 is now well over 20% when previously it was well under 10% in 10.04, between 5% and 7%!) (I have a problem with the battery indicator - it sometimes has % and other times hh:mm - it is necessary to know the ap. & v. to get more info on controlling same. ditto: There are issues with other indicator aps.) • Problem with dpkg-preconfigure, how to correct?

  I was trying to install TeamViewer, and I followed the instructions here even though they specify 11.10 instead of 12.04 (what I'm running). • OS2/Warp - Remotely Stop and Restart a Program

  Our current phone system runs off of a legacy OS2/Warp box. Periodically we have to log into the machine and restart OS2RSD.exe and then start it again and the phone system starts working again. The problem is we have to physically get in front of the box and use the GUI to stop and restart the process. Is it possibly to remotely run a script to kill OS2RSD.exe if its running and then start it again? I have been unable to figure this out on my own. The OS is OS2/Warp Version 3 if that helps.

• Mac OS X: pushing all traffic through a VMWare VM

  I want to set up an Astaro (Sophos) UTM in a Virtual Machine. The Setup should be at the end the following: Cable Modem (one IP adress) | [Ethernet] Sophos UTM (running as VM [VMWare Fusion 5] on the MacMini) | [WIFI] Airport Express v2 (for sharing Local Network to wireless and wired clients) 1)| [WIFI] 2)| [Ethernet over Thunderbolt Ethernet Adapter]* Clients MacMini (Local File Server) *To have the Mini also protected behind the UTM So the setup process for the UTM works fine, but then the problems start: I just have one external IP (from my cable modem provider)== So if I put the VM in briged mode my Internet connection drops, because the MacMini also has its IP adress. If I put the VM to NAT mode the Mini itself is not protected by the UTM So: is there a way to hide the en0 interface(Ethernet) and the en1 interface (Wifi) from the MacMini, so that they not even appear in System Preferences Network section but are available to the VM? That way the Mini must connect to the en2 interface (Thunderbolt adapter) to make any Internet/LAN connection and I just use the given single IP from the Cable Modem. Thaks for any suggestions... • Smooth waypoint traversing

  There are a dozen ways I could word this question, but to keep my thoughts in line, I'm phrasing it in line with my problem at hand. So I'm creating a floating platform that I would like to be able to simply travel from one designated point to another, and then return back to the first, and just pass between the two in a straight line. However, just to make it a little more interesting, I want to add a few rules to the platform. I'm coding it to travel multiples of whole tile values of world data. So if the platform is not stationary, then it will travel at least one whole tile width or tile height. Within one tile length, I would like it to accelerate from a stop to a given max speed. Upon reaching one tile length's distance, I would like it to slow to a stop at given tile coordinate and then repeat the process in reverse. The first two parts aren't too difficult, essentially I'm having trouble with the third part. I would like the platform to stop exactly at a tile coordinate, but being as I'm working with acceleration, it would seem easy to simply begin applying acceleration in the opposite direction to a value storing the platform's current speed once it reaches one tile's length of distance (assuming that the tile is traveling more than one tile-length, but to keep things simple, let's just assume it is)- but then the question is what would the correct value be for acceleration to increment from to produce this effect? How would I find that value?

  Hello, I am looking for a tool to keep a task alive (restarting if necessary) for a specified amount of time (in seconds), and then kill it and stop. For example: keep_for 3600 rsync foo bar:faz should for try to synchronize a directory (restarting rsync in case of f.e. dropped connection), but explicitly kill rsync and stop respawning it after an hour. I tried to write a shell script for that, but it was surprisingly difficult to write, with lots of edge cases (like child process not getting killed, or shell escaping issues). So... maybe there already is a tool for that?

• What would happen if I did a "Boot to VHD" to a VHD that was configured to run under Hyper-V?

  Microsoft has a Hyper-V based VM I'm interested in running, however, I don't have access to a Windows Server 2008 machine to try it on, only a Windows 7 Pro x64 machine (Windows 7 does not support Hyper-V). But instead of those routes, I'm wondering: What would happen if I tried to go the "Boot to VHD" route using this Hyper-V VHD? Is it possible that during the boot process, Windows would simply notice that hardware had changed and adjust accordingly, installing the appropriate drivers and continuing on without a hitch?

• Should components have sub-components in a component-based system like Artemis?

  I am designing a game using Artemis, although this is more of philosophical question about component-based design in general. Let's say I have non-primitive data which applies to a given component (a Component "animal" may have qualities such as "teeth" or "diet"). There are three ways to approach this in data-driven design, as I see it: 1) Generate classes for these qualities using "traditional" OOP. I imagine this has negative implications for performance, as systems then must be made aware of these qualities in order to process them. It also seems counter to the overall philosophy of data-driven design. 2) Include these qualities as sub-components. This seems off, in that we are now confusing the role of components with that of entities. Moreover out of the box Artemis isn't capable of mapping these subcomponents onto their parent components. 3) Add "teeth", "diet", etc. as components to the overall entity alongside "animal". While this feels odd hierarchically, it may simply be a peculiarity of component-based systems. I suspect 3 is the correct way to think about things, but I was curious about other ideas.

• Bizarre SSH Problem - It won't even start

  I recently got Ubuntu 12.04 Precise, got it up and running with some MediaWiki software, static IP on the box and router and was able to access the main page even from a cell phone. Everything seemed great... Then I wanted to finally get rid of the monitor and keyboard and login remotely via SSH. I installed openssh-server, let everything point to port 22 for a test run and installed putty on my Windows XP machine. I got a connection refused. Went back and started checking the Ubuntu install itself... (I'm under root from this point on) $ sudo -s $ service ssh status ssh stop/waiting $ service ssh start ssh start/running, process 2212 $ service ssh status ssh stop/waiting Apparently ssh has stopped or is waiting for something.... $ ssh localhost ssh: connect to host localhost port 22: Connection refused I can't even connect to myself... I checked ufw (firewall) to see if port 22 is doing alright... $ sudo ufw status Status: active To Action From 22 ALLOW Anywhere 22/tcp ALLOW Anywhere 22 ALLOW Anywhere (v6) 22/tcp ALLOW Anywhere (v6) sshd_config shows only Port 22 Is ssh not using the right IP address at all? I just don't get what I did wrong here. When this is up and running I will def change the port number, but for now, I don't want to mess with the default install too much until a test run with putty is successful. Edit: Here are my sshd_config file and my ssh_config file. The command /usr/sbin/sshd -p 22 -D -d -e returns: /etc/ssh/sshd_config line 159: Subsystem 'sftp' already defined. Edit: @phoibus moving the sshd_config file and reinstalling did the trick! service ssh status the above command shows that ssh is now running and I am now able to log in from my windows xp computer remotely via putty. Thanks so much! I can now use my monitor for other things!

• root locked out of EC2

  I was in the process of disabling root logins on an AWS EC2 instance. Right after setting PermitRootLogin no and restarting sshd, I closed the terminal on accident -- before setting up users with sudo privileges. The result is that my key to get into the instance as root does not work (sshd forbids it) and when I log into the instance using my regular user I can't gain root privileges (the root password was never set). The instance is running ubuntu 8.10. Anyone have any idea how can I fix this?

• How do I make a Windows virtual machine replicate to another datacenter/cloud?

  We have a Windows 2008 VM running IIS and SQL Server Express (it's an all-in-one web application). We need to have another copy at our secondary datacenter site. What is the best way to do this? It doesn't have to be running all the time but it has to have almost the latest copy of the current VM. I took a look at VMWare Fault Tolerance and after the heart attack at the price I starting looking for another solution. If need be I wouldn't mind copying it over to a cloud VM provider, if I can find one that lets me copy my own VMs up and start them up without any conversion process.

• How can I split a stereo audio track of a movie into two separate audio tracks?

  I often record TV shows with a hard disk recorder/DVD writer, burn them as VRO file and convert to MP4 with Handbrake. The shows are bilingual broadcasts with two mono audio channels instead of a stereo one: dubbed voice on the left, original voice on the right. The TV set and VLC are both perfectly capable to play only the left or the right channel, but other video players may just offer to select between different stereo audio tracks (like they are present on many DVDs). I'd like to have an easy process to create MP4 or MKV files of these shows where the two audio channels are split into two separate audio tracks. The only way that I know of is to extract the audio track (e.g. using MPEG Streamclip), split it into two tracks using an audio tool like Audacity and then merge the audio tracks back (using a DVD authoring software, don't remember all details). Clearly not a thing to repeat regularly. Preferably a solution should run on Mac OS X, but Linux or Windows solutions are very welcome, too.

• Large .tmp files in C:\Windows\Temp

  I have a Windows 2008 server which functions as a web service server, and every other week or so, the C:\Windows\Temp folder is filled with large (between 40-300 meg) files with names like: ~DF5D73.tmp, ~DFA95.tmp, etc. They appear My webservices on the server don't create any files with that type of name, and the contents don't appear to help identify them. Process Explorer indicates that w3wp.exe is currently using several of the files, but I can't imagine specifically where they're coming from.   hi, I have two systems with ip address say 64.103.56.1(A)(Dev name -wlan0) and 64.103.225.18(B),now what i want is , everytime I ping B from my system A, it has to be routed via a router say with address 10.0.0.251(C)(I want this to be my next hop to reach B) , but this router is on a different subnetwork than the two systems.How do I do this? /* Things I tried: I used 'route add -host B gw C wlan0', and got an error saying " no such process exist or no such device found". • TechEd 2010 Day Four: Learning how to help others learn

  I do quite a few presentations, and teach at the University of Washington, and also teach other classes. But I'm always learning from others how to help others learn. At events like TechEd I have access to some of the best speakers around, so I try to find out what they do that works. I attended a great session by allen White, in which he demonstrated a set of PowerShell scripts. He said that Dan Jones of the Microsoft Manageability team told him while he demonstrated a script he needed to provide some visual way to represent the process. Allen used one of the oldest visualizations around - a flowchart. It was the first time I'd seen one used to illustrate a PowerShell script, and it was very effective. I'm totally stealing the idea. All of us are teachers - we help others on our team understand what we're up to. Make sure you make notes for what you find effective in dealing with you, and then meld that into your own way of teaching. • USB Ports In Wrong Mode, How To Use usbmodeswitch?

  I haven't had access to my USB ports as media devices for a couple days now. I've been reading and researching everything I can find but I can't find a good guide for usbmodeswtich or usbms that I can decipher. The USB's are fine for power, but won't support my android phone as a media device, which is killing me because I use adb everyday, and won't support my plug and play mouse any longer. Not sure what caused the switch, though I think it may be related to the suspend issue I've read about, but the solutions in those threads I read also didn't work. Below is my system information and details.
