  I want to use WIFI for HiDef video, but I don't trust it for my office PC's. I've heard of VLANs but I have no idea how to set it up or what (SOHO) hardware to buy. Other than getting 2 different DSL lines, how can I be absolutely sure that the PC side doesn't get hacked? What if I want to use MS Home server as a backup device for both sides? Can I make it "read only" for the PC side, and physically change the cable if I need to restore? TW

• What is the most economic hardware that will run Ubuntu? [closed]

  I'm looking to buy the cheapest hardware I can find that will run the latest version of Ubuntu desktop on some sort of usable level (e.g. use of web browser, flash, etc). I guess small form factor would be pretty convenient, so I was looking at Acer Aspire Revo for example, but I'm not sure whether or not it's overpriced. I'd rather pay less for the same thing minus brand name if it's available. Any ideas? On further investigation, it seems I'm looking for a nettop.

• Is it possible (and safe/reliable/non-damaging) to use a 20-pin ATX PSU with a 24-pin ATX motherboar

  I have a reasonably-decent old 20-pin PSU which I want to use on a newer 24-pin ATX motherboard. I see that the ATX page on wikipedia mentions that 24-pin ATX is backward-compatible, and I can find 20-to-24 pin adapters to buy for a couple of dollars/pounds at lots of places, but I can't find any mention of restrictions on the use of these. Will this work on any motherboard, or is it a per-motherboard compatibility question? Are there any other restrictions like the level of power available (and hence the additional 4 pins with +12, +5 and +3.3V lines which are already on other pins)?

  I have some e-books that I've downloaded from Project Gutenberg and some other sources to my MBP. They are all DRM free. Excluding e-mail them to my Kindle as a personal document as a method (the total size is more than 5 GB, the space provided by Amazon), is there any way to transfer these books to my Kindle App on my Nexus 7 (Android Tablet). • Building computer: Casing for peripheral sockets is a pain!

  I have a casing the covers the spacing between the peripheral socket which is standard to have when you buy a motherboard. My problem with these covers is that they have spokes that pushes the motherboard away so the sockets don't even come out of the covers. This also misaligns the screws on my atx motherboard with the holes in my computer case. I usually break these spokes so that i can align my motherboard correctly. Why the heck do motherboard manufacture put spokes on these covers? am i using them wrong?   This is for a computer screen. Both my video card and computer screen have DVI ports on them but I'm using a VGA. I'm wondering if there would be a difference if i switch from VGA to DVI. My current resolution is 1920x1080 with the VGA cord. will my resolution increase if i switch to a DVI? Are there any advantage of switching from VGA to DVI? If there will be a difference if i switch, I've read there are 5 different type of DVI cables. how do I know which one to buy?

  I have a server with CentOS 4.8 installed. The provided is rubbish, but there's only a few months left, and they're busy being sued by Chase bank, so I doubt I can get CentOS 5. I wiped the server clean using Virtuozzo, and found that the default image is VERY empty. I even had to install yum myself. I've reached the point where I want to install TomCat. I downloaded the Sun JRE as a .rpm.bin file, did chmod a+x and ran it.   I'd like to set up RAID-1 on my Gigabyte G33M-S2L motherboard and for this reason I purchased two 1T hard drives. According to SiSoft Sandra the motherboard does support RAID but it is disabled. I looked everywhere in BIOS even upgraded it to the most recent version but found nothing that would have said "RAID" and the operating system I wish to install sees the two HDDs, not just a RAIDed one. What could be the problem? Does my motherboard support RAID (as the diagnostic tool claims) or do I need to buy a RAID card?

  I've got two Acer X233Hbid 23" Widescreen LCD Monitors from new egg back last summer, each weigh 10.5lbs a piece I Want to Buy a third Acer 23" (closest I've found is the X235 on Newegg, weighs in at 11.5 lbs) , one of the new ATI video cards that will output to 3 displays, and then a monitor stand that will let me use them in portrait mode like the image below.   I have a co-worker who insists that he will never buy a book unless it is considered "THE" book. So, in this vein, I thought I'd ask what the ultimate Linux book is. I wouldn't quite call myself a complete beginner since I can get around in Linux in general pretty well. But, beyond that, I'm also looking for a book with an eye towards becoming a Sys Admin someday. • Openfiler RAID 10 option not found

  Hi, I'm building a NAS using Openfiler2.3 (from 32-bit ISO), first of all I want to experiment it on VM first before going out and buy the harddrives needed. I created 5 virtual drives on VMware, sda is 2GB and the rest 1GB each (sdb to sde). I left sda blank and want to setup a RAID 10 disk using sdb, sdc, sdd and sde, 4 RAID partitions are setup successfully, but when I try to create a RAID device the only option for RAID level is 1, 0, 5 and 6. RAID 10 is not there! Can someone let me know what have I missed, please? TIA.

Why it's so rare to find those switch ? They looks really great but... I've never seen any Juniper or Powerconnect... Why do enterprises stick with the expensive Cisco ? I've tried to find how to buy both, it's quite easy with PowerConnect, everything is on the DELL website, but it looks it's very hard to find Juniper equipments in France :( Thank you !

Moving the current location of my primary Wi-Fi router is not an option thanks to our cable provider and our landlord. Buy a bigger, beefier router (seems expensive). If so, should I go for one of those draft 802.11n ones to avoid microwave/other Wi-Fi router interference? Set up a router with DD-WRT as a repeater Leech the neighbors' open Wi-Fi access point. • Will Intel be releasing anymore 6-core processors soon?

  I am about to start buying parts every week for as long as it takes me to build the best PC I can build. I am looking at the Intel i7-920 processor right now because it is about 250$ and it is a quad-core processor based on the x58 chipset I believe. From what I have read so far, intel is coming out with some 6-core processors soon that will also use the x58 chipset and will allow me to use the same motherboard and memory/ram to upgrade to a 6-core. This sounds really good to me right now. I just read that the new 6-core processor. The Core i7-980X (extreme edition) was just released which is the first 6-core processor but it is supposed to be around $1,000 so I will probably just get the i7-920 for now and then upgrade to the 6-core version when the price goes down. The motherboard I am looking at getting the GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD5 which is around $280 at newegg.com So that is my basic plan SO far. I have not purchased any parts yet. I am just wanting to ask if this sounds like a good idea or if I should wait longer if I am wanting to eventually have a 6-core processor. Does anyone know if Intel is planning on releasing any other 6-core processor in addition to the Core i7-980X in the near future? I just want to make sure I am buying the best setup for my money if I am going all out on it, thanks for any tips/advice.

• Loss of feature set with VMware EVC

  If I have two machines both 3rd Generation AMD Opteron, one Shanghai & one Istanbul and I can vMotion between them. Does it buy me anything to enable EVC at the 3rd Generation AMD level? Will I lose any CPU features? My thoughts are, I can enable EVC 3rd Generation with running VMs and I can't enable 2nd Generation EVC with running VMs. I figure there won't be a lose in any features because if there was a reduction in feature set then I couldn't enable EVC with running VMs.

Unfortunately, even today's Acer Revo, built on ION platform is not fast enough for streaming Full HD videos. So what do you think, will new two core CPU make it better, will it be able to show Full HD videos, store them to disk and transfer something over the network at the same time? • 2008 Sever Randomly reboots.

  I'm out of ideas here. We have a 2008 Server that keeps rebooting 2-3 times a day at completely random times with an "Unexpected Shutdown" event. There are no Dumps, no events leading to it just like it loses power then comes back online. I ran a Diagnostic of the power supply and it has had continuous power for months. In addition, the temperature of the processors are maxing out at 40 degrees Celsius. Anyone have any ideas how to figure out why this is restarting all the time? This is a DMZed Web server so it doesn't do too much process wise.   Many times I want my computer to interface old hardware. Such as radio, light switch, etc. This mostly involves pushing pressing and moving various buttons and switches. I don't want to buy new hardware I want my computer to interface the old hardware I already have.   So do you still need specific software/drivers (intel matrix?) installed to manage the raid controller, setup the array. If the raid chipset is on-board the motherboard and it uses the CPU, and say I am using a Core 2 Quad Q9550, would a hardware based card still out perform the motherboard chipset? This is for a home workstation and I could spend $300 on a areca ARC-1210 PCI-Express x8 SATA II but I want to be able to justify the money for the raid card.
