• Trouble with Samba Domain

  I'm having a bit of trouble setting up this Samba domain correctly. I'm getting an Access Denied error when trying to add a Windows XP machine to the domain. I'll go through my scenario in detail, but for those of you wanting a TLDR summary it'll be at the bottom of this post. I have HP Proliant server with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS installed. For this particular environment, I need this server to act as a PDC, file server, and print server. I began by updating and upgrading the packages (of course). Then went to install samba, gnome-desktop, wine, and cpanm. Samba was, of course, for the PDC and file/print services. The GUI was needed because a certain software has to be installed on there that needs a GUI. Wine was needed because the software is Windows-native. And cpanm was for a perl script I have running. For Samba, I went into the smb.conf file and enabled domain logons, changed the workgroup/domain name, the logon script for a per-group basis (netlogon/%g), enabled the netlogon and profiles share, and setup a couple of custom shares for the file service. The printer was added later, and seems to be working just fine. I then restarted the services, and used the net groupmap command to ensure my unix groups were mapped correctly to the Windows groups. After this, I went to a Windows box, and was able to successfully join the domain without a problem. After some fidgeting with the software to get it running on the win boxes from the server (it's a records management system program, which stores it's database files on the server), I went to add another computer to the domain. But now it's saying Access Denied. Before when I had this trouble it was because I forgot to add the group "machines" so Samba could create machine accounts. Thinking this was the case, I manually created the machine account to test this theory. However, it would still give me an Access Denied error. That must mean it has something to do with permissions now, correct? I've been fighting with this server for the past two weeks. If it's not one thing that;s wrong, then it's something else completely different. This would be the third time I've actually reinstalled everything to start over. I'll post snippets of my system settings below. If anything else is needed, just say the word and I'll gather up the info. The unix group 'domadmin' is the Domain Admins group. • Waiting for Windows 8: A Long, Hot Summer

  Microsoft has revealed some things about Windows 8, and revealed a part of the developer story for new Windows 8 “tailored,” “immersive” applications.  In retrospect, very little was shared.  The bit that was revealed to us is that those applications can be developed using a combination of HTML 5 and JavaScript.  Not much else was said, except that additional details would be revealed at Microsoft’s //Build/ conference in Anaheim, California in September. This has left a lot of people in suspense, and it seems that suspended state is going to last all summer.  The problem, of course, is that in the absence of hard information, people fill the void with Speculation, Rumor and Gloom.  That’s a bit like Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt, except that it’s self-imposed by the Microsoft community and not planted by Microsoft’s competitors. This is a less-than-perfect situation.  Not only is it causing developers to worry about the value of their skill sets, but I am already hearing from consulting shops that customers are getting nervous too and, in extreme cases, opting for non-Microsoft tools for their projects as a result.  I’m also hearing from dev tool ISVs that sales have suffered as a result. It’s quite possible that the customers moving off .NET wanted to do so anyway and it’s also possible that dev tool ISVs are suffering slower sales this year due a slowed rate of economic recovery. Without hard information, tend to people interpret things negatively.  Actually, that’s the major point in all of this. While there is multitude of opinions about what the Windows 8 development platform will look like once fully revealed, there is an emerging consensus around one thing: it sure would help if Microsoft revealed more of its strategy…just enough to quash absurd rumors, stabilize the .NET ecosystem and get people to stay calm. We’ve had some reassurances thus far: there will be a Windows desktop mode; we’ll still have Windows Explorer, we’ll still run Office, we’ll still have a task bar, and all the skills and tools we use now will still work there.  But with reassurances like that…people still feel insecure.  Because telling us that Windows 8 will have what is essentially a “classic” mode sure makes it sound like today’s skill sets will soon be “classic” too…and then maybe they’ll just become obsolete. Humans find change scary; it’s natural.  And when left alone with their fears – because no one is saying anything to dispel them – people can go from frightened to paranoid, and can start to viewing things in a downright conspiratorial light.  It would be great if Microsoft stepped into the void now and told us what is coming – especially because whatever they tell us is bound to be at least a little better than what people think they are going to hear. I don’t know what the announcements will be, but I do have it on authority, from a number of sources, that Microsoft isn’t gong to talk until //Build/.  That means no news until September September 13th.  Nothing until after Labor Day.  You get zippo until after the Back-to-School sales are done. What to do?  Try not to let the dark voices of gloom and doom fill your head.  Even in the absence of answers, we still have some important facts: The .NET developer community is huge. Microsoft’s customers have major investments in .NET, and in .NET skills. Political infighting in Redmond might make for irrational decisions, but ultimately public companies can’t just alienate their advocates and piss off their customers.  Spite doesn’t trump fiduciary responsibility. The computing device markets are changing, software is changing, software business models are changing and developers are changing.  Microsoft has to keep up. The HTML + JavaScript community is huge too, and it includes many of the “changed” developers. Public companies can’t ignore new markets nor the popular standards that can help them enter those new markets.  Loyalty doesn’t trump fiduciary responsibility either. If Microsoft can appeal to new developers, then it should. If Microsoft can keep catering to its existing developers and customers -- not just through legacy support, but also through empowering futures -- then it probably will. You don’t have to shove your old friends out into the rain to make room for new ones; you can bring those new constituents in under a bigger tent.  I hope Microsoft will enlarge the tent, and I have trouble imagining why it would not.

• My own personal use of Oracle Linux

  It always is easier to explain something with examples... Many people still don't seem to understand some of the convenient things around using Oracle Linux and since I personally (surprise!) use it at home, let me give you an idea. I have quite a few servers at home and I also have 2 hosted servers with a hosted provider. The servers at home I use mostly to play with random Linux related things, or with Oracle VM or just try out various new Oracle products to learn more. I like the technology, it's like a hobby really. To be able to have a good installation experience and use an officially certified Linux distribution and not waste time trying to find the right libraries, I, of course, use Oracle Linux. Now, at least I can get a copy of Oracle Linux for free (even if I was not working for Oracle) and I can/could use that on as many servers at home (or at my company if I worked elsewhere) for testing, development and production. I just go to http://edelivery.oracle.com/linux and download the version(s) I want and off I go. Now, I also have the right (and not because I am an employee) to take those images and put them on my own server and give them to someone else, I in fact, just recently set up my own mirror on my own hosted server. I don't have to remove oracle-logos, I don't have to rebuild the ISO images, I don't have to recompile anything, I can just put the whole binary distribution on my own server without contract. Perfectly free to do so. Of course the source code of all of this is there, I have a copy of the UEK code at home, just cloned from https://oss.oracle.com/git/?p=linux-2.6-unbreakable.git. And as you can see, the entire changelog, checkins, merges from Linus's tree, complete overview of everything that got changed from kernel to kernel, from patch to patch, errata to errata. No obfuscating, no tar balls and spending time with diff, or go read bug reports to find out what changed (seems silly to me). Some of my servers are on the external network and I need to be current with security errata, but guess what, no problem, my servers are hooked up to http://public-yum.oracle.com which is open, free, and completely up to date, in a consistent, reliable way with any errata, security or bugfix. So I have nothing to worry about. Also, not because I am an employee. Anyone can. And, with this, I also can, and have, set up my own mirror site that hosts these RPMs. both binary and source rpms. Because I am free to get them and distribute them. I am quite capable of supporting my servers on my own, so I don't need to rely on the support organization so I don't need to have a support subscription :-). So I don't need to pay. Neither would you, at least not with Oracle Linux. Another cool thing. The hosted servers came (unfortunately) with Centos installed. While Centos works just fine as is, I tend to prefer to be current with my security errata(reliably) and I prefer to just maintain one yum repository instead of 2, I converted them over to Oracle Linux as well (in place) so they happily receive and use the exact same RPMs. Since Oracle Linux is exactly the same from a user/application point of view as RHEL, including files like /etc/redhat-release and no changes from .el. to .centos. I know I have nothing to worry about installing one of the RHEL applications. So, OL everywhere makes my life a lot easier and why not... Next! Since I run Oracle VM and I have -tons- of VM's on my machines, in some cases on my big WOPR box I have 15-20 VMs running. Well, no problem, OL is free and I don't have to worry about counting the number of VMs, whether it's 1, or 4, or more than 10 ... like some other alternatives started doing... and finally :) I like to try out new stuff, not 3 year old stuff. So with UEK2 as part of OL6 (and 6.3 in particular) I can play with a 3.0.x based kernel and it just installs and runs perfectly clean with OL6, so quite current stuff in an environment that I know works, no need to toy around with an unsupported pre-alpha upstream distribution with libraries and versions that are not compatible with production software (I have nothing against ubuntu or fedora or opensuse... just not what I can rely on or use for what I need, and I don't need a desktop). pretty compelling. I say... and again, it doesn't matter that I work for Oracle, if I was working elsewhere, or not at all, all of the above would still apply. Student, teacher, developer, whatever. contrast this with $349 for 2 sockets and oneguest and selfsupport per year to even just get the software bits.

• ComboBox Data Binding

  Let's create a databound combobox, levering MVC in a desktop application. The result will be a combobox, provided by the NetBeans ChoiceView, that displays data retrieved from a database: What follows is not much different from the NetBeans Platform CRUD Application Tutorial and you're advised to consult that document if anything that follows isn't clear enough. One kind of interesting thing about the instructions that follow is that it shows that you're able to create an application where each element of the MVC architecture can be located within a separate module: Start by creating a new NetBeans Platform application named "MyApplication". Model We're going to start by generating JPA entity classes from a database connection. In the New Project wizard, choose "Java Class Library". Click Next. Name the Java Class Library "MyEntities". Click Finish. Right-click the MyEntities project, choose New, and then select "Entity Classes from Database". Work through the wizard, selecting the tables of interest from your database, and naming the package "entities". Click Finish. Now a JPA entity is created for each of the selected tables. In the Project Properties dialog of the project, choose "Copy Dependent Libraries" in the Packaging panel. Build the project. In your project's "dist" folder (visible in the Files window), you'll now see a JAR, together with a "lib" folder that contains the JARs you'll need. In your NetBeans Platform application, create a module named "MyModel", with code name base "org.my.model". Right-click the project, choose Properties, and in the "Libraries" panel, click Add Dependency button in the Wrapped JARs subtab to add all the JARs from the previous step to the module. Also include "derby-client.jar" or the equivalent driver for your database connection to the module. Controler In your NetBeans Platform application, create a module named "MyControler", with code name base "org.my.controler". Right-click the module's Libraries node, in the Projects window, and add a dependency on "Explorer & Property Sheet API". • What's New in Oracle VM VirtualBox 4.2?

  A year is a long time in the IT industry. Since the last VirtualBox feature release, which was a little over a year ago, we've seen: new releases of cool new operating systems, such as Windows 8, ChromeOS, and Mountain Lion; we've seen a myriad of new Linux releases from big Enterprise class distributions like Oracle 6.3, to accessible desktop distros like Ubuntu 12.04 and Fedora 17; and we've also seen the spec of a typical PC or laptop double in power. All of these events have influenced our new VirtualBox version which we're releasing today. Here's how... Powerful hosts  One of the trends we've seen is that as the average host platform becomes more powerful, our users are consistently running more and more vm's. Some of our users have large libraries of vm's of various vintages, whilst others have groups of vm's that are run together as an assembly of the various tiers in a multi-tiered software solution, for example, a database tier, middleware tier, and front-ends.  So we're pleased to unveil a more powerful VirtualBox Manager to address the needs of these users: VM Groups Groups allow you to organize your VM library in a sensible way, e.g.  by platform type, by project, by version, by whatever. To create groups you can drag one VM onto another or select one or more VM's and choose Machine...Group from the menu bar. You can expand and collapse groups to save screen real estate, and you can Enter and Leave a group (think iPad navigation here) by using the right and left arrow keys when groups are selected. But groups are more than passive folders, because you can now also perform operations on groups, rather than all the individual VMs. So if you have a multi-tiered solution you can start the whole stack up with just one click. Autostart Many VirtualBox users run dedicated services in their VMs, for example, running a Wiki. With these types of VM workloads, you really want the VM start up when the host machine boots up. So with 4.2 we've introduced a cross-platform Auto-start mechanism to allow you to treat VMs as host services. Headless VM Launching With VM's such as web servers, wikis, and other types of server-class workloads, the Console of the VM is pretty much redundant. For some time now VirtualBox has offered a separate launch mechanism for these VM's, namely the command-line interface commands VBoxHeadless or VBoxManage startvm ... --type headless commands. But with 4.2 we also allow you launch headless VMs from the Manager. Simply hold down Shift when launching the VM from the Manager.  It's that easy. But how do you stop a headless VM? Well, with 4.2 we allow you to Close the VM from the Manager. (BTW best to use the ACPI Shutdown method which allows the guest VM to close down gracefully.) Easy VM Creation For our expert users, the  New VM Wizard was a little tiresome, so now there's a faster 2-click VM creation mode. Just Hide the description when creating a new VM. Powerful VMs  As the hosts have become more powerful, so are the guests that are running inside them. Here are some of the 4.2 features to accommodate them: Virtual Network Interface Cards  With 4.2, it's now possible to create VMs with up to 36 NICs, when using the ICH9 chipset emulation. But with great power comes great responsibility (didn't Obi-Wan say something similar?), and so we have also introduced bandwidth limiting to prevent a rogue VM stealing the whole pipe. VLAN tagging Some of our users leverage VLANs extensively so we've enhanced the E1000 NICs to support this.  Processor Performance If you are running a CPU which supports Nested Paging (aka EPT in the Intel world) such as most of the Core i5 and i7 CPUs, or are running an AMD Bulldozer or later, you should see some performance improvements from our work with these processors. And while we're talking Processors, we've added support for some of the more modern VIA CPUs too. Powerful Automation Because VirtualBox runs atop a fully blown operating system, it makes sense to leverage the capabilities of the host to run scripts that can drive the guest VMs. Guest Automation was introduced in a prior release but with 4.2 we've revamped the APIs to allow a richer and more powerful set of operations to be executed by the guest. Check out the IGuest APIs in the VirtualBox Programming Guide and Reference (SDK). Powerful Platforms  All the hardcore engineering that has gone into 4.2 has been done for a purpose and that is to deliver a fast and powerful engine that can run almost any x86 OS because of the integrity of the virtualization. So we're pleased to add support for these platforms: Mac OS X "Mountain Lion"  Windows 8 Windows Server 2012 Ubuntu 12.04 (“Precise Pangolin”) Fedora 17 Oracle Linux 6.3  Here's the proof: We don't have time to go into the myriad of smaller improvements such as support for burning audio CDs from a guest, bi-directional clipboard control,  drag-and-drop of files into Linux guests, etc. so we'll leave that as an exercise for the user as soon as you've downloaded from the Oracle or community site and taken a peek at the User Guide. • Glassfish 3 Cant update JDK no way

  Hello.. I was using 1.6.0_19 jdk and installed 1.6.0_20 jdk.. Glassfish doesnt like that... Here are my windows environment variables.. • Windows Start Menu Not Staying on Top

  Hey everyone. I've had this problem since Windows Vista. I did a clean install with Windows 7 and hoped it would fix the problem. Also swapped out the video card just to rule out a strange driver issue. Here's what's happening. After running for some period of time (usually a few hours), the Start button/orb will loose it's "Chrome" and turn into a plain button that just says "Start." It will work fine for a while, but then the start menu will just stop showing. Additionally, when I hit Win+D to show the desktop, the entire taskbar completely disappears. I can get it back usually by moving/minimizing windows that may be overlapping where the start menu should show. Otherwise, it requires either a full reboot or I'll end up killing & restarting the explorer.exe process. • Landscape orientation for UITabBarController?

  The UITabBarController does not allow landscape orientation. So I used a subclass of UITabBarContoller (called RotatingTabBarController). Its sole purpose it to allow rotation by returning YES to shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation call. The problem is that when you rotate the iPhone in simulator it gives the following malloc error. malloc: *** error for object 0x3888000: pointer being freed was not allocated *** set a breakpoint in malloc_error_break to debug I am using 3.0 SDK with Xcode 3.2 on Snow Leopard. I set a breakpoint in malloc_error_break but I can not trace it back to my code. Is there something I can do to make this error go away?   I'm running supervisord on my CentOS 6 box like so, /usr/bin/supervisord -c /etc/supervisord.conf and when I launch supervisorctl all process status are fine, but if I try to reload using supervisorctl I get unix:///tmp/supervisor.sock no such file I'm using the same config file I've used successfully on other boxes, and im running everything as root. • GWT & HTML5 Video in Mobile Safari

  I'm trying to code a site in GWT that plays videos with HTML5. Everything works great on the desktop, but mobile Safari on both the iPhone and iPad do not play the video. I can play a video using Video for Everybody. I've even copied the code to my own plain HTML page, and it works flawlessly. If I serve that same code via a GWT widget, mobile safari will not play the video. On the iPhone I see a gray box with a prohibitory sign around the play button, and on the iPad it shows up as a black box. I've made sure my doctype is <!DOCTYPE html>, but I don't know where else to start debugging. Perhaps it it because the code is injected via javascript? Any pointers on where to start looking would be greatly appreciated.   Hi, Im loading images into Flash and using JPGEncoder to encode the image to a ByteArray and send this to AMF PHP which writes out the bytearray to a file. This all appears to work correctly and I can download the resulting file in Photoshop CS4 absolutely fine. When i try to open it from the desktop or open it back in Flash it doesnt work... Picasa my default image browser says "Invalid" Here is the code i use to write the bytearray to a file - $jpg = $GLOBALS["HTTP_RAW_POST_DATA"]; file_put_contents($filename, $jpg); That's it ... I use the NetConnection class to connect and call the service, do I need to say Im sending jpg data? I assumed that JPGEncoder took care of that. How can I validate the bytearray before writing the file? Do I need to set MIME type or something .. excuse the slightly noob questions, a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing. • Using sem_t in a Qt Project

  Hi everyone, I'm working on a simulation in Qt (C++), and would like to make use of a Semaphore wrapper class I made for the sem_t type. Although I am including semaphore.h in my wrapper class, running qmake provides the following error: 'sem_t does not name a type' I believe this is a library/linking error, since I can compile the class without problems from the command line. I've read that you can specify external libraries to include during compilation. However, I'm a) not sure how to do this in the project file, and b) not sure which library to include in order to access semaphore.h. Any help would be greatly appreciated.   I often have to make stacked barplots to compare variables, and because I do all my stats in R, I prefer to do all my graphics in R with ggplot2. I would like to learn how to do two things: First, I would like to be able to add proper percentage tick marks for each variable rather than tick marks by count. Counts would be confusing, which is why I take out the axis labels completely. Second, there must be a simpler way to reorganize my data to make this happen. It seems like the sort of thing I should be able to do natively in ggplot2 with plyR, but the documentation for plyR is not very clear (and I have read both the ggplot2 book and the online plyR documentation.   Hi, There are a number of questions about this and a number of possible causes and thus far ive tried them all with no success. situation: i have an app that needs a db to work, onstartup it does a SmoApplication.EnumAvailableSqlServers(false) to get all the instances on the network, shows the user a dropdown, they pick one and i go connect to my db on that server. all good problem: this works on my machine, the guys next to me and others. HOWEVER it doesnt work on one of the tech guys machines (and potentially others). we are all on the same network domain, physically connected (no wireless), all logged on with network user names, all running the same sql express 2005 sp3, though im using win7 the other guys are running xppro. MSSMS on all machines can see all the instances when you select "Browse for more". yet on this one tech guys machine it lists his local instance (since its hardcoded to) and all the network servers, but has no instances names? i.e. .sqlexpress server1 server2 server3 server4 but on my machine and others we get: .sqlexpress server1/sqlexpress server2/sqlexpress server3/sqlexpress server4/sqlexpress the code im using: ' .... some code ' this populates my datatable dtServers = SmoApplication.EnumAvailableSqlServers(False) '.... some code '.... then later i ShowServers(...) Notes: ive tried firewall 1433, 1434 i can connect using a udl with full SERVERNAME\INSTANCENAME the browser service is running locally and on the remote machine ive tried stopping and restarting both the browser service on the local and remote machine. Ideas?

• Using QT to build a WYSIWYG Editor for a Custom Markup Language

  I'm new to QT, and am trying to figure out the best means of creating a WYSIWYG editor widget for a custom markup language that displays simple text, images, and links. I need to be able to propagate changes from the WYSIWYG editor to the custom markup representation. As a concrete example of the problem domain, imagine that the custom markup might have a "player" tag which contains a player name and a team name. The markup could look like this: Last week, <player id="1234"><name>Aaron Rodgers</name><team>Packers</team></player> threw a pass. This text would display in the editor as: Last week, Aaron Rodgers of the Packers threw a pass. The player name and the team name would be editable directly within the editor in standard WYSIWYG fashion, so that my users do not have to learn any markup. Also, when the player name is moused-over, a details pop-up will appear about that player, and similarly for the team. With that long introduction, I'm trying to figure out where to start with QT. It seems that the most logical option would be the Rich Text API using a QTextDocument. This approach seems less than ideal given the limitations of a QTextDocument: I can't figure out how to capture navigation events from clicking on links. Following links on click seems to only be enabled when the QTextEdit is readonly. Custom objects that implement QTextObjectInterface are ignored in copy-and-paste operations Any HTML-based markup that is passed to it as Rich Text is retranslated into a series of span tags and lots of other junk, making it extremely difficult to propagate changes from the editor back to the original custom markup. A second option appears to be QWebKit, which allows for live editing of HTML5 markup, so I could specify a two-way translation between the custom markup and HTML5. I'm not clear on how one would propagate changes from the editor back to the original markup in real-time without re-translating the entire document on every text change. The QWebKit solutions looks like awfully bulky to me (Learning WebKit along with QT) to what should be a relatively simple problem. I have also considered implementing the WYSIWYG with a custom class using native QT containers, labels, images, and other widgets manually. This seems like the most flexible approach, and the one most likely not to run into unresolvable problems. However, I'm pretty sure that implementing all the details of a normal text editor (selecting text, font changes, cut-and-paste support, undo/redo, dragging of objects, cursor placement, etc.) will be incredibly time consuming. So, finally, my question: are there any QT gurus out there with some advice on where to start with this sort of project? BTW, I am using QT because the application is a desktop application that needs platform independence.

  I have a console application that is trying to load a CustomConfigurationSection from a web.config file. The custom configuration section has a custom configuration element that is required. This means that when I load the config section, I expect to see an exception if that config element is not present in the config. The problem is that the .NET framework seems to be completely ignoring the isRequired attribute. So when I load the config section, I just creates an instance of the custom configuration element and sets it on the config section. My question is, why is this happening? I want the GetSection() method to fire a ConfigurationErrors exception since a required element is missing from the configuration.   I have made a template singleton class, I have also made a data structure that is templated. My question is; how do I make my templated data structure inherit from a singleton so you can only have one float type of this structure? I have tested both seperate and have found no problems. • KISS: Simple C# application which communicates with a RESTful web service.

  Following the KISS principle, I suddenly realised the following: In .NET, you can use the Entity Model Framework to wrap around a database. This model can be exposed as a web service through WCF. This web service would have a very standardized definition. A client application could be created which could consume any such RESTful web service. I don't want to re-invent the wheel and it wouldn't surprise me if someone has already done this, so my question is simple: Has anyone already created a simple (desktop, not web) client application that can consume a RESTful service that's based on the Entity Framework and which will allow the user to read and write data directly to this service? Otherwise, I'll just have to "invent" this myself. :-)Problem is, the database layer and RESTful service is already finished. The RESTful service will only stay in the project during it's development phase, since we can use the database-layer assembly directly from the web applications that are build around it. When the web application is deployed, the RESTful services are just kept out of the deployment. But the database has a lot of data to manage over nearly 50 tables. When developing against a local database, we can have straight access to the database so I wouldn't need this tool for this. When it's deployed, the web application would be the only way to access the data so I could not use this tool. But we're also having a test phase where the database is stored on another system outside the local domain and this database is not available for developers. Only administrators have direct access to this database, making tests a bit more complex. However, through the RESTful service, I can still access the data directly. Thus, when some test goes wrong, I can repair the data through this connection or just create a copy of the data for tests on my local system. There's plenty of other functionality and it's even possible to just open the URL to a table service straight in Excel or XMLSpy to see the contents. But when I want to write something back, I have to write special code to do just that. A generic tool that would allow me to access the data and modify it would be easier. Since it's a generic setup around the ADO.NET Data services, this should be reasonable easy too. Thus, I can do it but hoped someone else has already done something similar. But it appears that there's no such tool made yet...
