  Many websites display a news ticker of one sort or another. A news ticker is a user interface element that displays a subset of a list of items, cycling through them one at a time after a set interval. For example, on Cisco's website there is a news ticker that shows the company's latest news items. Each news item is a one sentence link, such as "Desktop Virtualization Gathers Steam," or "Cisco Reports First Quarter Earnings." Clicking a headline whisks you to a page that shows the full story. Cisco's news ticker shows one headline at a time; every few seconds the currently displayed headline fades out and the next one appears. In total, Cisco has five different headlines - the ticker displays each of the five and then starts back from the beginning. This article is the first in a series that explores how to create your own news ticker widget using jQuery and ASP.NET. jQuery is a free, popular, open-source JavaScript library that simplifies many common client-side tasks, like event handling, DOM manipulation, and Ajax. • Does an inexperienced programmer need an IDE?

  Reading this other question makes me wonder if I (as an absolute beginner PHP programmer) should stick with WAMP and Notepad++ or to switch to some IDE like Eclipse. It's understandable that skilled developers will benefit from a big shiny IDE. But why should an absolute beginner use an IDE? Do the benefits outweigh the extra challenge of learning the IDE on top of learning to develop? Update for clarification: My goal is to get some basic programming experience. By choosing PHP and WAMP (and FogBugz and Kiln) I hope to avoid having to navigate the tricky / messy OS specifics and compiling etc. and just focus on basic functionality like an online user registration form. I've got lots of theoretical understanding from university a decade ago but no practical experience. I want to remedy that with a hobby project that would be similar to a real-world sellable web app. There are so many questions to ask. So many pitfalls I probably have to blunder into. This question is just one piece (my first!) of that puzzle.

PS: I know is specific to Altova and their Dev Tools, but just like Eclipse and Visual Studio it is one of the widest used toolkits for XML related development & programming. So, please do not hate, ban or give negative. Linked below is a section of information for Word ML XML and its numbering, list, bullet etc. The markup is pretty extensive. I am wondering if this can be replicated via StyleVision or is this a limitation that needs to extended with an external XSLT?   I need to assemble a GetSatisfaction/Lithium/Jive type support forum/community. The first is not available in the desired language and the last two are priced for the enterprise market. I did research some other options (open source or SaaS) but they all seem to be either: kind of dead (open source options) too focused in gathering ideas/feedback (uservoice) strictly support without the community/voting features (zendesk) I need an open forum (people powered support/UGC with community/voting features). Therefore I will have to do some of the work on my own. I want to piece things (plugins/mods/etc) on top of a standard forum platform to give it the features I need. For this purpose, I want to use a mature product with widespread userbase, active community and lots of plugin options. I believe most will agree that my options therefore are: vBulletin phpBB SMF Here are the questions: Which one of the three above offers the easier path towards the desired goal? Which one of the three above has the most advanced features related to the desired goal? Of course I dont expect anyone to know these answers cut and dry. I am hoping to hear some experiences and see some examples. Also, it would be great if both those questions had the same answer, but I am not going to get my hopes up... But with Google Chrome, Apple Safari and Opera Web browser, the site does not load/open at all because of the Google translate. (I know this because If I remove the Google Translate Code, the site works/loads fine) It was one thing to program for "cross browser compatability" and alltogether another to program for "cross region compatability". What can I do to make sure that the site works from anywhere? Do I completely remove the Google Translate code and just have to do without the additional functionality or Do I look for alternatives like this or according to this?

• Analytics - Where do my drop offs go?

  I have a website set up with Google Analytics (through the Wordpress plugin "Google Analytics for WordPress" by Joos de Valk). When I check out the visitors flow in Google Analytics, it shows something like this: (home) - 43% drop-offs /page-2/ - 10% drop-offs ... etc ... I have also set up events for external links. My main "goal" of the website is to drive traffic to my Android app on Google Play, so I have a couple of different links to that that are all set up as events. Everything seems to be working, my events show up when I go to Content - Events in Google Analytics. However, it seems to me that some percentage of the users that are reported as "drop-offs" in fact have clicked on one of the external links. But there's no info about the reason of those drop-offs in the Visitors flow-chart. I can of course check out each specific event category, event action and set "other" to Content/Page, which (I guess) shows the number of visitors who triggered a specific event on a specific page. It just seems like such a complicated way of going about this! So, is there a way to get a more detailed picture, including events, in the Visitors flow chart? Something like: (home) - 43% drop-offs Event Action: "Google Play"=50%, "Youtube"=10%, (not set)=40%

  I'm trying to set up a podcast service at present. This is just a 'spare time' task - so I wanted a quick, easy way to do it. To get this working: I've ripped (with owner permission) some YouTube content across to MP3 and hosted this content on Azure Blob Storage. I've posted blog posts - with linked mp3 content - inside a Blogger website. I've registered the RSS feed with iTunes This all seems to be working OK - http://dotnetmobilepodcast.blogspot.co.uk/ However, when it comes to a couple of final touches, then I'm hitting problems. RSS I would like to add iTunes metadata to the RSS feed. However, I can't find any way to do this inside the Blogger system. To workaround this I've tried using FeedBurner with its StreamCast plugin. However, the output from FeedBurner doesn't seem to be accepted by iTunes - e.g. http://feeds.feedburner.com/MobileAppCSharpPodcasts leads to this very unhelpful 11111 message: Is there any other way I can get this iTunes metadata content into the Blogger RSS feed - e.g. maybe an alternative service or a Yahoo! Pipe? Showing the MP3 files in the Blog I'm trying to work out how to automatically display the linked enclosures inside the blog posts - do the blogger Dynamic Views don't seem to have any way of doing this? I've found the HTML in those views very difficult to follow. If necessary I can workaround this using manual entries into each blog post... but I'd prefer to do this programatically if I can.

• Distributed Rendering in the UDK and Unity

  At the moment I'm looking at getting a game engine to run in a CAVE environment. So far, during my research I've seen a lot of people being able to get both Unity and the Unreal engine up and running in a CAVE (someone did get CryEngine to work in one, but there is little research data about it). As of yet, I have not cemented my final choice of engine for use in the next stage of my project. I've experience in both, so the learning curve will be gentle on both. And both of the engines offer stereoscopic rendering, either already inbuilt with ReadD (Unreal) or by doing it yourself (Unity). Both can also make use of other input devices as well, such as the kinect or other devices. So again, both engines are still on the table. For the last bit of my preliminary research, I was advised to see if either, or both engines could do distributed rendering. I was advised this, as the final game we make could go into a variety of differently sized CAVEs. The one I have access to is roughly 2.4m x 3m cubed, and have been duly informed that this one is a "baby" compared to others. So, finally onto my question: Can either the Unreal Engine, or Unity Engine make it possible for developers to allow distributed rendering? Either through in built devices, or by creating my own plugin / script?

• What is the basic loadout for an open source web developer?

  Thus far, I have mainly been an embedded developer, but I am interested in having the flexibility to do mobile and web development as well. I think my tools should include the following, but probably a lot more. LAMP stack. Java IDEs like Eclipse and IntelliJ. JS frameworks like Dojo, Node.JS, AngularJS, (is it better to mix or commit to one?). Cloud solutions like EC2 and Azure (again, ok to mix or better to commit to one?). Google APIs. Continuous integration server. Source control tools with Git for new work, SVN, CVS, +others for imports. FTP server. Unit test runners. Bug trackers. OOAD modeling tools or plug-ins? Graphic design tools? Hosting services. XML / JSON / other markup? Content management, SEO? I am also interested to know if there are tools where it might be better to mix, match, or support all available (maybe for source control) and others where the full focus should be on one (maybe Java vs. C# or Windows vs. Linux vs. MacOS). Perhaps some of these questions need context of whether the projects will be greenfield (just pick favorite) or maintenance (no choice, each project continues legacy, sometimes with a poor tools).

• best way to host multiple wordpress site on single vps [migrated]

  Not sure if this is webmaster or a WordPress question, it's a bit half and half, sorry if I'm posting in the wrong place. Without using Multi-Site or installing new WordPress CMS' in second-level domains, what's the best way to get multiple WordPress installs running on my VPS (running Linux powered CentOS 6 with WHM and cPanel)? It's currently working but only by setting the permalinks option to the default setting, so the URLs aren't human-friendly. I have come across something called WPSiteStack, though I'd really rather not go down this route. Long story short, I need the following: Seperate installs so one core / theme / plugin update doesn't affect all sites and increases security of all sites; 'Pretty' permalinks; Each WordPress install must be in the root of it's own domain to ensure that I can accurately measure my clients' quotas; It may also be worth noting that some functions within each install use the $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'] and $_SERVER['HOST'] variables. I have already edited the httpd-vhosts.conf, httpd.conf and .htaccess files but this hasn't made any changes. So any ideas what I'm missing or doing wrong? Any help is much appreciated.

• Using 12.04 installation as a persistent pen drive

  Disclaimer: I aim to build a self contained pen drive with my application inside, so no matter about updates. Maybe I'm looking at the wrong linux distribution to do this... Please let me know if you think so. I've tried knoppix and even lubuntu, but they don't come with enough "drivers" for Unity3D to work. Creating a custom live persistent pen drive is a real pain and I'm trying for 1 day without any success. Sure, being able to do it would probably be ideal and occupy the minimum space. Using the installation image on a pen drive, however, is good enough and is really easy to create. We can even do it from any OS, using UNetBootin, LiLi USB Creator or some other methods. Straight forward. Some recommend installing it on a pen drive. But that requires a lot of space and, I believe, it won't behave as good as something meant to be installed on a usb disk, because of memory management. So, there are only a few negative points on using the installation image that I can think of. Question here, is how to remove those drawbacks: Having to press "Try Ubuntu". That's the big one. Couldn't find how. Unable to load everything on memory and keep on running without the pen drive (like this) Unable to remove "Install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS" app. Setting the ISO to use maximum amount of space for the OS will leave pen drive with zero space left and any file saved within it from ubuntu is inaccessible from the outside (when plugin the pen drive and not booting from it). Am I missing something? Can those points be fixed?

• Colored Vertical Lines upon boot and nomodeset DOES NOT fix it

  I have installed Lubuntu 13.04 on a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop, rebooted the machine and encountered this problem. I edited the GRUB configuration to remove "quite splash" and enter "nomodeset", updated grub, and everything was fine. I could reboot the machine without any trouble. However, if I unplug the machine, wait a few seconds, and plug it back in, the problem with the colored lines comes back and nomodeset no longer helps to solve the problem. I tried using radeon.modeset=0 instead of nomodeset and that also works on multiple reboots until I unplug the machine and plug it back in. I was finally able to get around the problem by entering "radeon.exapixmaps=0" instead of radeon.modeset=0. I suppose I kind of made up that boot option using some information from an Arch Wiki page. This would work throughout reboots and even if I unplugged the laptop. It was working fine for quite a while. A few weeks later, I had some unrelated issues with the Java iced-tea plugin, and since 13.10 had just come out, I thought I would try upgrading. So upgrading didn't fix the problem with Java, and after unplugging the machine and trying to use it later, I was back to this problem with the black screen and colored vertical lines. I am completely out of ideas on what to try. It took me a week to figure out how to get it working the first time, but the solution I had isn't working anymore.

• Does this syntax for specifying Django conditional form display align with python/django convention?

I am working on a Django project, part of which will become a distributable plugin that allows the python/django developer to specify conditional form field display logic in the form class or model class. I am trying to decide how the developer must specify that logic. Here's an example: class MyModel(models.Model): #these are some django model fields which will be used in a form yes_or_no = models.SomeField...choices are yes or no... why = models.SomeField...text, but only relevant if yes_or_no == yes... elaborate_even_more = models.SomeField...more text, just here so we can have multiple conditions #here i am inventing some syntax...i am looking for suggestions!! #this is one possibility why.show_if = ('yes_or_no','==','yes') elaborate_even_more.show_if = (('yes_or_no','==','yes'),('why','is not','None')) #help me choose a syntax that is *easy*...and Pythonic and...Djangonic...and that makes your fingers happy to type! #another alternative... conditions = {'why': ('yes_or_no','==','yes'), 'elaborate_even_more': (('yes_or_no','==','yes'),('why','is not','None')) } #or another alternative... Those conditions will be eventually passed via django templates to some javascript that will show or hide form fields accordingly. Which of those options (or please propose a better option) aligns better with conventions such that it will be easiest for the python/django developer to use? Also are there other considerations that should impact what syntax I choose?

• Automated testing tool development challenges (for embedded software)

  My boss want to come up with the proposal for the following tool: An IDE: Able to build, compile, debug, via JTAG programming for the micro-controller. A Test Suite, reads the code in the IDE, auto generates the test cases, and it gives the in-target unit testing results(which is done by controlling code execution in the micro-controller via IDE). A no-overhead code coverage tool which interacts with the test suite and IDE. My work is to obtain the high level architecture of this tool, so as to proceed further. My current knowledge: There are tool-chains available from the chip manufacturer for the micro-controllers which can be utilized along with an open-source IDE like Eclipse, and along with an open-source burner, a complete IDE for a micro-controller can be done. Test cases can be auto-generated by reading the source file through the process of parsing, scripting, based on keywords. Test suite must be able to command the IDE to control, through breakpoints, and read the register contents from the microcontroller - This enables the in-target unit testing. An no-overhead code coverage should be done by no-overhead code instrumentation so as to execute those in the resource constraint environment of the micro-controller. I have the following questions: Any advice on the validity of my understanding? What are the challenges I will have during the development? What are the helpful open-source tools regarding this? What is the development time for this software? Thanks
