• Can I connect to SQL Server using Windows Authentication from Java EE webapp?

  I am currently investigating how to make a connection to a SQL Server database from my Java EE web application using Windows Authentication instead of SQL Server authentication. I am running this app off of Tomcat 6.0, and am utilizing the Microsoft JDBC driver. My connection properties file looks as follows: dbDriver = com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerDriver dbUser = user dbPass = password dbServer = localhost:1433;databaseName=testDb dbUrl = jdbc:sqlserver://localhost:1433 I have zero problems with connecting to a SQL Server database in this fashion when using SQL Server authentication. Is there any way I can retrieve the credentials of the user's Windows Authentication and use that authentication for SQL Server? UPDATE: I know in ASP.net there is a way to set up Windows Authentication for access to the webapp, which is exactly what I am looking for, except I want to pass that token off to SQL Server for access to the database.

  I have an ASP.NET application that runs under Classic .NET AppPool. I'm trying to render a report hosted in Reporting Services in another machine, with the correct address and everything. But I keep getting the following error, which I just can't solve: Cannot create a connection to data source 'MYDATASOURCE'. (rsErrorOpeningConnection) --- Microsoft.Reporting.WebForms.ReportServerException: Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\IUSR'. I won't post any code, I'm simply calling the .Render() method through Microsoft.Reporting.WebForms. Could it be a configuration or some special permission I have to grant to my code? Any Help?

  I installed NX server on my desktop and able to run it successfully following this tutorial: http://michigantelephone.wordpress.com/2007/10/15/how-to-install-nx-server-and-client-under-ubuntukubuntu-linux/ When i run the command sudo /usr/NX/bin/nxserver –status I am seeing the following output : NX 900 Connecting to server .. NX 110 NX Server is running. NX 999 Bye. It means i have setup NX server correctly.. But on other machine when i open NX client it is asking for hostname..what name should i give there? Every tutorial is explaining about how to install and start NX server but not about how to connect to the server from client.. Could you guys please help me? Thanks in Advance Deter

• Getting that buzz back?

  I have been working in development for a good company for a while now since graduating from university, I really enjoy it and have some great fun in the office and enjoy everything I am doing. But recently I have lost that old buzz, I cant bring myself to code outside of work, a while back I could be outside of work and come up with a nice idea and go away and develop that idea, but I feel that buzz has gone, I still love developing and technology but I just cant find the energy to do it when I am not at work. Has anyone else gone through a phase like this? What did you do to combat it and get that energy and buzz back? Maybe I need a new tehcnology, or a holiday!

• Crashing/freezing problems with an Aspire One 722

  After several annoying points with installing ubuntu 11.10 on my acer aspire one 722 i finally made this run. After installing i had freeze issues and solved them by putting network boot on first priority on the bios. Yesterday all worked fine, no problems with wlan etc. But today all is crashing down. Atm iam at the university and tried to log into the public wlan. With that came : i cannot shut down, terminal is not working, very slow perfomance, some apps are starting like libre office, some not like system manager, buttons are not reacting, wlan symbol is spinning all the time. Any suggestions i can do?

  So I've worked on my own all this time, selling software, creating a few web applications on my own. I had an Arts background I was self taught. It was a bit difficult to find a development position after endless trying, I finally landed a LAMP position. What I realized was it was all confidence issue. Before when I didn't know a few things I panicked but after spending such a long time working on my own projects and solving various problems, I felt confident enough that I could fulfill requirements on my own. Examples: iOS, OS X, Phosothop, Oracle, Windows, Final Cut Pro, MS Office, iTunes, iWorks Suite, iLife Suite, AutoCad, Aperture, Google search engine, Twitter and endless stream of software that are the best in their fields and that are the models the rest of the industry want to emulate. Few people would deny that the most popular software comes from American companies. Obviously there's plenty of good software coming from outside the US, like Linux or SAP but most great looking, killer software comes from USA. Maybe these companies outsource the code elsewhere but the inception and design is mostly done in the USA. Why is that? and, can it be replicated elsewhere given the correct "ingredients" ?

  I've been struggling with getting an application endpoint working on UCMA 3.0. I am trying to run an application on a server separate from the Lync server which uses a registered ApplicationEndpoint to monitor presence and act as a bot which can send other users messages. I used to have my code working with a UserEndpoint (which was fine for monitoring presence), but did not have the capabilities to send IMs to other Lync users. Often times normal office tools like Excel lack the tools to make complex search and replace operations on text. Could this people benefit from regexps ? Can regexp be taught to them ? Are regular expressions the exclusive domain of programmers and unix/linux technicians ? Can they be learned by non-IT people, given regexps are not a programming language? Is this a valid or achievable goal to make some users regexp-literate through appopriate training ? Have you have any experiences on this issue? and if so, have it been successful ?

• How to build a setup package for a desktop application using SQL CE 3.5 and Entity Framework?

I have included the DLLs directly in the application but when the sql ce is installed, its DLLs are in the GAC and have precedence over the local ones and the application crashes. I need the build a setup that would work "even if" the user already had the old buggy version.

  I added a web service consumer to a vb 2005 Windows app and tried to install it on another computer, which had an earlier version already installed (ClickOnce deployment). An error came up saying I needed to install Microsoft.SqlServer.PipelineHist in the GAC. I added PipelineHost to the list of references and marked it Copy Local = true, rebuilt the solution, published it and tried to install it on that other computer. This time it said I needed to install Microsoft.SqlServer.DtsMsg, however, that component does not show up on my list of .Net components. Where do I go from here? Thank you.

• Full text searching in SQL Server 2008 Express Advanced

  Hi, I have recently installed SQL Server 2008 Express Edition with Advanced Services on XP Pro but am having trouble getting full text searching to work with an restored database. The database was originally created in SQL Server 2005. When I call a stored proc that uses the full text index then I get the following error: Full-Text Search is not installed, or a full-text component cannot be loaded. This is my db version: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (RTM) - 10.0.1600.22 (Intel X86) Jul 9 2008 14:43:34 Copyright (c) 1988-2008 Microsoft Corporation Express Edition with Advanced Services on Windows NT 5.1 (Build 2600: Service Pack 3) When I run: SELECT DATABASEPROPERTY('DBNAME','ISFULLTEXTENABLED') I get: 1 Also, when I look in the advanced properties for the db server in Management Studio I see both the "Default Full-Text Language" and "Full-Text Upgrade Option" properties. However, when I go to SQL Server Configuration Manager I don't see the "MSSQLFDLauncher" service. Does anyone know how to get this working? Cheers, Iain

• ASP.NET 2.0 files work in one folder, but NOT in another

  I am about to leap of a building. I have created an app for a client and all the files are in a folder on their D drive. Now it is time to go production, so I copied all my files and folders to their excisting classic asp folder on the same drive. BUT NOTHING WORKS. The only difference I can see is that DEV does not require HTTPS like the production site. I also made sure all the permissions are the same on both folder. I made sure that the GAC has read rights using the aspnet_regiis tool. I am at the end of my debug knowlegde, could someone please help me out. Here are the error messages I get from the application event log. • Checksum Transformation

  The Checksum Transformation computes a hash value, the checksum, across one or more columns, returning the result in the Checksum output column. The transformation provides functionality similar to the T-SQL CHECKSUM function, but is encapsulated within SQL Server Integration Services, for use within the pipeline without code or a SQL Server connection. As featured in The Microsoft Data Warehouse Toolkit by Joy Mundy and Warren Thornthwaite from the Kimbal Group. Have a look at the book samples especially Sample package for custom SCD handling. All input columns are passed through the transformation unaltered, those selected are used to generate the checksum which is passed out through a single output column, Checksum. This does not restrict the number of columns available downstream from the transformation, as columns will always flow through a transformation. The Checksum output column is in addition to all existing columns within the pipeline buffer. The Checksum Transformation uses an algorithm based on the .Net framework GetHashCode method, it is not consistent with the T-SQL CHECKSUM() or BINARY_CHECKSUM() functions. The transformation does not support the following Integration Services data types, DT_NTEXT, DT_IMAGE and DT_BYTES. ChecksumAlgorithm Property There ChecksumAlgorithm property is defined with an enumeration. It was first added in v1.3.0, when the FrameworkChecksum was added. All previous algorithms are still supported for backward compatibility as ChecksumAlgorithm.Original (0). Original - Orginal checksum function, with known issues around column separators and null columns. This was deprecated in the first SQL Server 2005 RTM release. FrameworkChecksum - The hash function is based on the .NET Framework GetHash method for object types. This is based on the .NET Object.GetHashCode() method, which unfortunately differs between x86 and x64 systems. For that reason we now default to the CRC32 option. CRC32 - Using a standard 32-bit cyclic redundancy check (CRC), this provides a more open implementation. The component is provided as an MSI file, however to complete the installation, you will have to add the transformation to the Visual Studio toolbox by hand. This process has been described in detail in the related FAQ entry for How do I install a task or transform component?, just select Checksum from the SSIS Data Flow Items list in the Choose Toolbox Items window. • Online product demo environment for Windows applications

  I'm looking for a way to allow potential customers to try my application before they buy it. The product is a windows forms application that requires an SQL Server database to operate. Although I have a functional demo that the customer can install on their network, I want to make it easier for them by have them "play" with it at my environment. I remember Microsoft had (has?) something similar. I was testing Visual Studio a few years ago in a virtual environment where I was connecting to a server at Microsoft. Any suggestions? Thanks.

• What does "general purpose system" mean for Java SE Embedded?

  The Oracle website says this about Java SE Embedded license: development is free, but royalties are required upon deployment on anything other than general purpose systems What does "general purpose system" mean here? We have a sensor network around the country. On each box we have installed, there is a micro controller based board that gets data from the environment and send data on serial port to a ARM based embedded board. On this board system there is a Java process which reads and submits data to our central server using JMS. Is this categorized as general purpose system? Sorry I'm asking this here. We are in Iran, there is no Oracle office here to ask.

• Windows Server 2008 R2 network adapter stops working, requires hard reboot

  TL;DR version: Turns out this was a Windows Server 2008 R2 kernel networking bug. After siccing Microsoft support on it, we (eventually) got an unpublished kernel hotfix from Microsoft to address it. If you, too, are experiencing mysterious low-level network driver failures requiring a reboot/bluescreen cycle, you might want that hotfix (or maybe Service Pack 1 whenever it is released, too.) We have been using HAProxy along with heartbeat from the Linux-HA project. We are using two linux instances to provide a failover. Each server has with their own public IP and a single IP which is shared between the two using a virtual interface (eth1:1) at IP: 69.59.196.211 The virtual interface (eth1:1) IP 69.59.196.211 is configured as the gateway for the windows servers behind them and we use ip_forwarding to route traffic. We are experiencing an occasional network outage on one of our windows servers behind our linux gateways. HAProxy will detect the server is offline which we can verify by remoting to the failed server and attempting to ping the gateway: Pinging 69.59.196.211 with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 69.59.196.220: Destination host unreachable. Swapping network cards and switches I noticed the link light on the port of the switch for the failed windows server was running at 100Mb instead of 1Gb on the failed interface. I moved the cable to several other open ports and the link indicated 100Mb for each port that I tried. I also swapped the cable with the same result. I tried changing the properties of the network card in windows and the server locked up and required a hard reset after clicking apply. This windows server has two physical network interfaces so I have swapped the cables and network settings on the two interfaces to see if the problem follows the interface. If the public interface goes down again we will know that it is not an issue with the network card. (We also tried another switch we have on hand, no change) Changing network hardware driver versions We've had the same problem with the latest Broadcom driver, as well as the built-in driver that ships in Windows Server 2008 R2. Replacing network cables As a last ditch effort we remembered another change that occurred was the replacement of all of the patch cords between our servers / switch. We had purchased two sets, one green of lengths 1ft - 3ft for the private interfaces and another set of red cables for the public interfaces. We swapped out all of the public interface patch cables with a different brand and ran our servers without issue for a full week ... aaaaaand then the problem recurred. Disable checksum offload, remove TProxy We also tried disabling TCP/IP checksum offload in the driver, no change. We're now pulling out TProxy and moving to a more traditional x-forwarded-for network arrangement without any fancy IP address rewriting. We'll see if that helps. Switch Virtualization providers On the off chance this was related to Hyper-V in some way (we do host Linux VMs on it), we switched to VMWare Server. No change. Switch host model We've reached the end of our troubleshooting rope and are now formally involving Microsoft support. In this post I will talk about the ASP.NET AJAX controls, but as you will see on the product page, we will also offer support for our Silverlight UI controls.   The most important thing I want to share is that the RadEditor for MOSS product will updated for the 2010 version and you can already get a beta version from your account (provided you have a license for the ASP.NET AJAX controls).
