  • Build NAS for Windows and Linux network

    I have a spare PC and I would like to setup a NAS that is accessible from Windows and Linux. I would like to avoid using Windows as an OS and would like something like Ubuntu or FreeNAS. My only concern is I don't want to have to install special software on each client. Is there a way to use Ubuntu or FreeNAS and have Windows machines access the files with installing a client on each Windows box? UPDATE Thanks for the answers. I wish I could choose more than one. I will give FreeNAS a try and see how it goes. Thanks!

  • MacBookPro running Windows 7: accidental trackpad input is driving me mad

    I am running Windows7 Professional 64bit on a 2010 MacBookPro using BootCamp 3.1. I am using an external trackball. When I am typing, I accidently brushing the trackpad and accidently overtyping randomly selected pieces of text. Which is driving me mad. I have tried to install TrackPad++, but I could not get the Trackpad++ control panel to recognise that the driver software was installed. I tried TrackPad Magic, but although it gives me a system tray icon telling me it is working, but it does not appear to disable the track pad. A quick Google implies that there should be an option in the BootCamp Control Panel 'Ignore accidental Input while typing'. But I can't see one of those in my BootCamp Control Panel. Am I looking in the wrong place? Is this feature 32bit only? Is there anything else I should try?

  • How to become a Kernel/Systems/Device driver programmer?

    Hello all! I currently work in a professional capacity as a software engineer working with the Android OS. We work at integrating our platform as a native daemon among other facets of the project. I primarily work in Java developing the SDK and Android applications, but get to help with the platform in C/C++. Anywho, I have a great interest to work professionally developing low level for linux. I am not unhappy in my current position and will hang around as long as the company lets me (as a matter of fact I quite enjoy working there!), but I would like to work my way that direction. I've been working through Linux Kernel Development (Robert Love) and The Linux Programming Interface (Michael Kerrisk) (In addition to strengthening my C skills at every chance I get) and casually browsing Monster and similar sites. The problem I see is, there are no entry level positions. How does one break into this field? Anytime I see "Linux Systems Programmer" or "Linux Device Driver Programmer" they all require at the minimum 5-7 years of relevant experience. They want someone who knows the ropes, not a junior level programmer (I've been working for 7 months now...). So, I'm assuming, that some of you on stackoverflow work in a professional capacity doing just what I would like to do. How did you get there? What platforms did you use to work your way there? Am I going to have a more difficult time because I have my bachelors in CSC as opposed to a computer engineer (where they would experience a bit more embedded, asm, etc)?

  • Elastic versus Distributed in caching.

    Until now, I hadn't heard about Elastic Caching yet. Today I read Mike Gualtieri's Blog entry. I immediately thought about Oracle Coherence and got a little scare throughout the reading. Elastic Caching is the next step after Distributed Caching. As we've always positioned Coherence as a Distributed Cache, I thought for a brief instance that Oracle had missed a new trend/technology. But then I started reading the characteristics of an Elastic Cache. Forrester definition: Software infrastructure that provides application developers with data caching services that are distributed across two or more server nodes that consistently perform as volumes grow can be scaled without downtime provide a range of fault-tolerance levels Hey wait a minute, doesn't Coherence fullfill all these requirements? Oh yes, I think it does! The next defintion in the article is about Elastic Application Platforms. This is mainly more of the same with the addition of code execution. Now there is analytics functionality in Oracle Coherence. The analytics capability provides data-centric functions like distributed aggregation, searching and sorting. Coherence also provides continuous querying and event-handling. I think that when it comes to providing an Elastic Application Platform (as in the Forrester definition), Oracle is close, nearly there. And what's more, as Elastic Platform is the next big thing towards the big C word, Oracle Coherence makes you cloud-ready ;-) There you go! Find more info on Oracle Coherence here.

    Well i was using the info on this: Puppet - Any way to copy predefined custom configuration files for software on clients from the puppet master (host)? But i need some more elaborated, because i have several Desktops and are in use by 2 or 3 users each one, so i want to make a class for copy a shortcut in his desktops. The computers are joined to a domain, so any user can log in any desktop, and his profile is created in every desktop. I've tryed with this: class applink { file { "/home/installer/Escritorio/Workdesktop.desktop": owner => installer, group => root, mode => 770, source => "puppet://$server/files/Workdesktop.desktop" } This is only for one user called "installer", how can do this for several users? Can i use $USER for do this? Any Thoughts? Thank You!

  • Windows 7 Dell laptop Forgotten password

    Hi, A friend has managed to set up their new Windows 7 Home Premium Dell Inspiron and forgot the password they have used. I have tried the following password reset software to no avail: UBCD OHPCrack Offline NT Password & Registry Editor *Trinity Kon Boot I have also tried to do a system restore but this asks for the password. The user does not have any data they need to save. Is there anyway I can get access to the restore partition using Linux to create a recovery disk or do I have to purchase a recovery disk from Dell? Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Creating an email notification system based on polling database rows

    I have to design an email notification system based on the following requirements: The email notifications would be created based on polling rows in a Mysql 5.5 DB table when they are in a particular 'Completed' state. The email notification should be sent out in no more than 5 minutes from the time the row was created in the DB table (At the time of DB table row creation the state of the row might not be 'Completed'). Once 5 minutes for the DB table row expire in reaching the 'Completed' state, separate email notification need to be sent (basically telling the user that the original email notification would be delayed) and then sending the email notification as and when the row state reaches to being 'Completed'. The rest of the system requirements are : Adding relevant checks to monitor the whole system via MBeans interface. The system should be scalable so that if the rate of DB table rows creation increases so does the Email notification system be able to ramp up. So I request suggestions on following lines: What approach should I take in solving the problem described from a programming/Design pattern point of view? Suggestion for any third party plugin/software that can be used to solve the problem described? Points to take care regarding scalability and monitoring the health of the system? Java is the language of preference but I am open to using off the shelf components that can be interfaced with Java language or provide standard ports for communication. Currently I do have an in house grown system (written in Java) that is catering to the specified requirements, but it's now crumbling under increased load and now I want to give the problem a fresh look. thanks in advance Ashish

  • Why does RDP Licensing is licensing the same device multiple times? [closed]

    Possible Duplicate: Can you help me with my software licensing issue? I've got a Citrix XenApp 6.5 Farm running on Win 2008 R2 Servers. I purchased 300 Device RDP/Remote App Licenses for ~200 users. We went with Device licenses, because most of the end users use the same machines. After 1 month of operating, we started to run out of licenses. It turns out the licensing service is consuming multiple licenses for the same machine. I can revoke licenses, but there is a limit to how many I can do. Is this operating correctly? The only explanation I can come up with is that the Licensing service is giving a license to a device for every server it connects to in our Citrix farm.

  • Linux - Only first virtual interface can ping external gateway

    I created 3 virtual interfaces with different mac addresses all linked to the same physical interface. I see that they successfully arp for the gw and they can ping (the request is coming in the packet capture in wireshark). However the ping utility does not count the responses. Does anyone knows the issue?     How can I automatically start a program on Amazon's EC2 Windows 2008 web servers? For example, if I wanted to test the "Digg effect" on a web page of mine, how could I open 100 windows 2008 servers at once, each loading one (or two?) instances of the firefox web browser? I have placed a sample batch file in the windows startup folder that echos the time it was called, but it is only started when I actually login remotely via the remote desktop protocol. I don't want to have to login to 100 servers to get my software to run :P What can I do? I am using this Windows 2008 Datacenter, Amazon-supplied AMI specifically: ami-a2698bcb

  • Restrict IPMI access on Dell BMC and iDRAC to an allowed IP range

    I'm trying to secure the iDRAC's and BMC's on some of my Dell servers (R210, R410, R510). I want to restrict access to IPMI commands to only a few IP addresses. I've successfully restricted access to the iDrac using the instructions from http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/software/smdrac3/idrac/idrac10mono/en/ug/html/racugc2d.htm#wp1181529 , but the IP restrictions do not affect IPMI. A separate management network is not practical at this time because of lack or ports and some Dell BMC's don't offer a separate port. I'm told by my networking group that our switches don't support trunking, so using the vlan tagging is not an option either. Is there a way restrict the IPMI access to a list of allowed addresses? FYI, for various reasons, I have a mix of Dell servers with BMC's, iDrac Express and iDrac enterprise management features.

  • Laptop LCD Screen Flickering

    I recognize this is most likely not a software error and likely lies in one of the hardware components. However, about 3 months ago I replaced the LCD screen on this laptop. The company which I bought it through provided a 12 month warranty. Before I contact them, I would like to verify that the problem is most likely the LCD screen and not the inverter. Any comments? I recognize its impossible to diagnose hardware remotely, but it would be nice to know if there is a high probability it could be a component other then the LCD screen.

  • Backup strategy for Windows Server 2008 R2 and Hyper-V

    I am in the process of planning a Hyper-V deployment with SCVMM 2008 R2. I have several VMs on VMWare Player (temporary solution) for stuff like Sharepoint 2007, 2010, and a couple of other server apps. I want to develop a resilient backup plan for this. On the software side, Data Protection Manager 2010 will support all of the server apps I run (sQL Server 2008 R2, Sharepoint, Exchange, etc). But on the hardware side (storage), what is the best way to go? Drobo seems to have issues with Hyper-V juding by a few threads on here and doesn't support DPM 2010 (which is in beta anyway) but not even the 2007 version (see http://www.drobo.com/support/best_practices.php). What storage device would work well? Do I need a home server or just an external usb drive? Capacity wise, 2tb will probably be best so I can have a small archive and implement a round-robin system.     I currently have SQL Server 2012 and SQL Server 2014 both installed on the same machine. My job requires me to travel a lot and I like to travel light. Hence, I have only one computer with all the software installed in it. I can install Virtual Machines but as I was able to install SQL Server 2012 and SQL Server 2014 side by side, I just went ahead with that option. Now one day when I opened up my SQL Server 2014 and went to the properties of the my database, I realized that the dropdown box for Compatibility level is empty. I just can’t select anything there or see what is the current Compatibility level of the database. This was the first time for me so I was bit confused and I tried to search online. Upon searching online I realize that if I was not the first, there are very few questions on this subject on various forums as well as there is no convincing answer to this problem online. That means, I was pretty much first one to face this error. See the image of the situation I was facing. Now I decided to resolve this issue as soon as I can. I spent a few minutes here and there and realize my mistake. I had connected to SQL Server 2014 instance from SQL Server 2012 Management Studio. See how you can keep Firefox in constant view with the Always on Top extension. Before If you have a webpage that you like to watch throughout the day but have a very busy desktop then Firefox can get lost in all of the clutter. Note: You can read about the ReloadEvery extension here. Even with a widescreen monitor sometimes there is just not enough room to keep everything in easy view while you are working on something. Always on Top in Action Once you have installed the extension you will notice that a new Toolbar Button has automatically been added to your Navigation Toolbar. At the moment this is the only on/off switch for the extension. Clicking on the Toolbar Button will enable Always on Top and the button will change to a blue color to indicate its’ active status. Click on it again to disable it. Do anything that you like in the other windows…Firefox will still be the topmost window and easy to view.   • Is there anyway to get msiexec to echo to stdout instead of logging to a file

    As part of a continuous delivery pipeline I'd like to install an msi on a given machine. msiexec plus psexec does this perfectly, but it seems that msiexec can only log to a file and I need it to log to stdout/stderr. Right now, to get the output back into our CI software I'll have to add a second step to echo the contents of the log, which seems a bit pointless. Has anybody faced this issue before (and overcome it?) Thanks in advance for any help here. Mark

    Hello! At the moment, I try to install Arduino on my Ubuntu 10.04 (32 Bit) computer. I downloaded the latest release at http://arduino.cc/en/Main/Software, cd'ed to the directory and unziped the package.     I'm getting this error message in the Action Center on Windows 7, and I can't seem to solve it through Windows or through searches on Google: RICOH R5C592 PCI-CardBus/IEEE-1394/SD Card/Memory Stick Controller is not compatible with this version of Windows. Thanks for any help PS. I wasn't sure if you're allowed to post questions like this, about proprietary software, but I checked the FAQ and it seemed ok. Response: The URL I am told to visit it this but I can't tell which I should choose that I am originally presented with, or what to put in to select, as I am not sure what input it is referring to.
