• How do I link a VS2008 C++ project as a DLL instead of a LIB?

  I have the C++ source code in a Visual Studio project from another developer that compiles into a static lib. I need to change it so that it builds a dll from that code so that I can call it from C#. I went into the project properties in Visual Studio and changed the configuration type to a DLL. However, it now gives lots of linker errors like: error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol __CAP_Enter_Function XXXFilter.obj XXXFramework What else do I need to do in Visual Studio and in the code to produce a dll from the code instead of a lib? The library is huge so writing a wrapper is not an option. I have the code so I should be able to make it build a dll. I am not a very experienced C++ dev but I am in C# and visual studio. Thanks

• Resources for learning how to better read code

  Hi, I recently inherited a large codebase and am having to read it. The thing is, I've usually been the dev starting a project. As a result, I don't have a lot of experience reading code. My reaction to having to read a lot of code is, well, umm to rewrite it. But I need to bring myself up to speed quickly and build on top of an existing system. Do other people have techniques they've learned to absorb a code base? At this point, I'm just reading through the code. I've tried generating UML diagrams using UModel. They're so big they won't print cleanly and when I zoom in, I really do lose the perspective of seeing all the relationships. How have other people dealt with this problem?

• SQL Compare-Like tool for Oracle?

  We're a .NET team which uses the Oracle DB for a lot of reasons that I won't get into. But deployment has been a bitch. We are manually keeping track of all the changes to the schema in each version, by keeping a record of all the scripts that we run during development. Now, if a developer forgets to check-in his script to the source control after he ran it - which is not that rare - at the end of the iteration we get a great big headache. I hear that SQL Compare by Red-Gate might solve these kind of issues, but it only has SQL Server support. Anybody knows of a similar tool for Oracle? I've been unable to find one.

• Use branching in TFS for 32 bit and 64 bit version of a software?

  Hi everyone, we are in the process of porting a 32bit application, which uses the Outlook Redemption DLL to a 64 bit version, since redemption has recently been released as a 64 bit version as well. We'd like to maintain two versions of the application, one for 32 and one for 64 bit. What is the best way to organize these projects under team foundation server source control? Would I create a branch of the existing 32 bit version? Copying the whole project seems sub-optimal since it would duplicate all the business logic code. Any suggestions?

  I've all this kind of functions. ssize_t fuc1(int var1, void *buf, size_t count); int func2(char *charPtr, int mode, int dev); short func3( long var2); problem is that data types in C has different sizes when compiled on different machines(64bit & 32bit). This is true for even void*. For some reasons. I need to ensure that these sizes all are same on every machine(64bit & 32bit). So, how should I modify these ?

  I would like to list an arbitrary number of changes rather than the default 10 that are listed now. We have a dev build on checkin where this isn't necessary, but the once daily build that goes out I would like to have all the changes listed for the day. If that is unpossible (range?) than the last n would be fine. I've looked in the .ftl files, specifically common.ftl. It contains the macro for using data from jetbrains.buildServer.notification.impl.ChangesBean to acquire the changes. I am hopeful there is a way to set properties externally that ChangesBean will look at, but I haven't been able to discover anything. Ideas?

Any advice or best practices to keep libraries and dependancies relatively modular and easily upgradable when new releases for them are out? To put it another way, lets say you make a program that is a fork of an open source project. As both projects grow, what is the easiest way to maintain and share updates to the core?   While working on an existing Drupal site I've noticed a strange glitch that causes any PHP operator with in it to act like a ? tag. This is happening in in Drupal pages that I create that have a 'Input Format' of 'PHP code'.   When using bundler with a project in general and Rails specifically, you have access only to gems defined in your Gemfile. While this makes sense, it can be limiting. Mostly I find it limiting when I want to use a certain RSpec formatter that the rest of the team doesn't use. Unless it's in the Gemfile, it isn't accessible. Any way around it or I have to add it to Gemfile? Update: my problem wasn't Bundler but Spork. When running RSpec without Spork I had no problem of using whatever formatter I wanted.

  This is my script - it simply looks for the image file associated to a person record. Now the error will display if there is NO .jpg evident when the query runs.   On our development sql server, executing any query containing more than approximately 700 characters stalls for about 10 seconds and then reports the following error: Msg 121, Level 20, State 0, Line 0 A transport-level error has occurred when receiving results from the server. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - The semaphore timeout period has expired.) for example, this query select * from FooTable where id = ' (.. and then 700 spaces ..) ' fails fails with the timeout error while this one select * from FooTable where id = ' (.. and then 600 spaces ..) ' fails with the expected Msg 8169, Level 16, State 2, Line 1 Conversion failed when converting from a character string to uniqueidentifier. - immediately. Indeed, throwing any query, including random garbage at our dev sql server exhibits this behaviour, while any other sql server I have available acts as expected, so I would think that the query never actually gets to parsing on the server. I'm at a loss here - any hints?

• Which Visual Studio 2010 edition for sole developer

  I am the sole .net developer for a small company. My projects span many .net technologies including WinForms, WPF, SQL, XNA, Linq, WCF, WTF?, and others. I struggle staying on top of all these projects so I'm looking to make my life easier with the release of VS2010. Without a mentor I rely heavily on StackOverflow and whatever else Google comes up with. Should I convince my company to get an edition with an MSDN subscription? Is it one of those things where once you have it, you can't imagine life without it? What about the source control that comes with VS2010, do you all find it better than an SVN server? We're looking to hire another programmer this year, would I be best off getting a Team edition of VS2010 to be best prepared for that hire? Thanks!

• Can I configure Eclipse / JBoss integration so it does not rely on deploying Jars to the "server/def

  I am using MyEclipse 7.5 with JBoss 4.2.3 GA. When I define my local development JBoss server in MyEclipse it always wants to deploy jars, wars etc. to the "server/default/deploy" directory. Unfortunately our JBoss directory structure for production is "server/XYZ/deploy/abc" (driven by a third party). As a result our Dev JBoss instances are different from our QA/Staging/Production JBoss instances. Is there a way to configure Eclipse to use JBoss but deploy to that specific folder path "server/XYZ/deploy/abc" rather than the default one "server/default/deploy"?
