• Auto Log-Off Windows users - Windows 2003 domain

  Hi! I am trying to make windows clients automatically log off after some time, I have been trying to use the winexit.scr which I have seen working else where in a similar environment. After working though these instructions (I did read the comments and notice the original ADM provided is buggy) I've had no joy what so ever! Winexit.scr refuses to read any settings in the registry, even while using a test account I can access the required reg key(s); edit, add, and remove values. Essentially winexit.scr always uses it's default values: 30 second timeout, no forced log-out. What I really want is a 30 minute timeout with a forced log-out, closing all the users apps etc. I've tried removing and re-adding the ADM template, creating the GPO from scratch several times, giving various registry permissions - including full control to "Everybody" just for fun! Oh, clients are all win XP SP3, DC is win 2003 R2 SP2. So, can anybody suggest something? Cheers!

• How can I make Internet Explorer 6 render Web pages like Internet Explorer 11?

  Now, I know that this may seem like a bad question in that I can just upgrade to Internet Explorer 8, but I am sticking with IE6 in that IE8 removes valuable features, like the ability to save favorites offline and the fact that a file path turns into a Windows Explorer window and typing a Web address into Windows Explorer changes it into an IE window. I know that Internet Explorer 6 does a really bad job at rendering some pages. I know of the Google Chrome Frame extension that brings Chrome-style rendering into IE, but that will soon be discontinued. So, I tried another thing: I know that C:\Windows\System32\mshtml.dll contains the Trident rendering engine that is used by IE, so I tried something: I first backed up the original file by renaming it on Windows XP to mshtml-old.dll, then I tried to copy in the DLL from a computer running Windows 7 with Internet Explorer 10. I noticed that, after copying, the system had replaced the new DLL with the old one, but left the one I backed up intact. Is there any way I can get the system to not replace the DLL like that so that I can transfer in IE11's mshtml.dll into Windows XP and make IE6 render like IE11? I'm looking for an answer that describes how to tweak my system to make IE6 render like IE11 (or IE10), not one that tells me to upgrade IE or install another browser. I don't care how tedious the method is, just as long as it works.

• Permissions nightmare - tried all I know

  Working on a new client's dev site, which is a wordpress install on a Plesk box. I have SSH root access, and FTP access through a separate account. What I've done so far Initially I couldn't make any changes to any files at all. The permissions on all the template files looked a little screwy (644), so I figured change them to allow group, and add myself to the group: CHMOD Recursive on the theme folder to set everything to 664 Quickly realised I'd broken it, set the folders to 755, kept files as 664 Ownership on all files is a mixture of root:root and 500:500 (there is no user nor group with the ID of 500 on the server). Added myself to the group 'root' so I could modify the files too The Problem This worked OK, in terms of being able to edit the existing files, so I began working. However, I can't upload to the directory, even having run CHOWN -R root:root templatefolder/ and being in the root group. I feel like I must be missing something obvious, and it's doing my head in. Questions: Files in the install owned by 500 with group 500 - I've looked in /etc/group and /etc/passwd and there is no user nor group with this ID. Is that left over from another developer's setup or the previous server (they moved recently)? Is being in the 'root' group enough, or do I need to own the theme folder as 'myftpuser' in order to upload and create new files? Like I say, I have edit access, so I got myself this far. I'm now questioning what to do next!

• Mysqld increases the load on the CPU and drops after flush-tables

  Help please advice on the issue. Normal load on the cpu 20-30% us + sy. After restoring the database files from the slave server (same version) began a periodic problem. mysql starts to load the cpu at 100% (us + sy grows proportionally). The queue is growing, everything slows down. But with mysqladmin flush-tables are normalized for a few hours. Dedicated linux server running mysql 2 x E5506 24Gb RAM, database size 50Gb. • Looking for software to read PDFs/web pages aloud on OS X

  I am looking for software that will read PDFs and web pages aloud for me under OS X 10.5, preferably something that is free. I am aware that you can make your Mac read to you by pressing a key combination. It is pretty slick, but I really want something that: will allow me to say, "Read this document" and let me skip paragraphs and pause (instead of simply stopping and then restarting from the beginning) will allow me to skip things that aren't relevant, like page headers, footers, and side bars. will allow me to rewind and listen to something again (either to think on it more deeply, or to understand what the text-to-speech engine was trying to say) for a pdf with text in two columns, will let me read just one column at a time. (Right now if I make a selection, it gets both columns and reads from one and then from another. If I could just select one column and read it, I'd be happier. [IIRC, Apple improved things in Snow Leopard so you can select one column in a pdf.]) I don't really expect one program to do both pdfs and web pages, but it would be nice.

• Recommendation for robust, customizable, open source, Java servlet-based forum software?

  There is a lot of forum software out there, but it seems to me that a lot of the popular choices are PHP-based. And for my project, I'd like something based on Java servlets so my team can make customizations to it. Another important feature is that I can completely change the pages to hide unwanted elements without too much work. So I'm looking either for a template system or easily editable scripts (i.e. JSPs) that have a clean view separation. Just having skin changes or CSS customization is not enough. I understand that if I have open source, I can change anything I want, but my point is that it should be easy and not requiring mastery of a complex code base. Finally, I want something that has been around for at least a year and deployed on some high-traffic sites. Clustering support (one database, multiple web servers) is highly desirable. Up-time is crucial since I have an SLA to support. What do you think?

• Trouble with backslash characters and rsyslog writing to postgres

  I have rsyslog 4.6.4 configured to write mail logs to a PostgreSQL database. • How do I keep the keyword.url setting in firefox to default when you restart the browser without del

  I am on the latest version of Firefox (not beta or anything like that) and currently my keyword.url is stuck on search.google.com (which I don't remember setting even though the about:config says it's a user setting. Can someone tell me how to set it back to default and keep it at default when I reset my browser? I do not want to delete prefs.js as I do not want to go thru setting up all the extension settings I have just to have my location bar search google (if this is the only way then I'll stick with searching from the search bar instead). I've checked all my extensions that may effect the location bar but could not find anything that says it would change the default search engine for this. I've also tried to open the prefs.js in wordpad or notepad but it just ends up freezing when trying to edit it at all (yes the browser is closed at the time). I also deleted the prefs-1.js (along with 2 others) that were older (after trying to rename those to prefs.js and see if this corrects it. It might have but had such old extension settings I went back to my latest prefs.js with this one issue instead of the issue of setting back up a ton of extensions. I can give any other info if needed, someone please help me fix this issue if possible.

• Virus cleanup + dying drive = XP Automatic Updates crashing in esent.dll

  Background I'm doing system recovery on an old WinXP SP1 system brought to me on suspicion of virus infection. After taking preliminary backups, I used MalwareBytes to detect and clean the infection. I might've even gotten it all. In the process, I've discovered (a) the system drive is showing signs of impending failure, and (b) the owner has been using the system's old crusty IE-6 instead of the up-to-date Firefox I've provided for him. So naturally, thinking I had a relatively stable system, I tried to hit the Windows Update site to install IE-8, in case further training doesn't stick. The update site told me it needed to update the installer, and I started that process. Soon after, wuauclt.exe started crashing, reporting addresses in module esent.dll. There's a Microsoft KB (910437) on a problem with that DLL, so I downloaded the hotfix and installed. The crashing did not stop. I attempted to install SP3 from the offline installer, but that didn't fix the issue either. The system is reporting a few hard drive / IDE controller errors, but they don't correlate to the crashes, so they aren't the direct cause. I've also attempted to rollback to the time between the infection removal and the first crashes, but that doesn't help. Question The hotfix I tried to install dealt with problem in transaction logs of the Extensible Storage Engine (ESE) database. I suspect this issue is similar, but that the database itself (whatever the ESE database is) is corrupted. Is there a way to clean or clear this database so that system operation returns to normal? Can someone enlighten me as to what the ESE database actually is, and where it resides? Can I just locate some files and delete them to bring this under control?

• What is auto-mounting my media volume?

  Something is repeatedly mounting my "media" share, doing something with it, then quietly un-mounting it with no notifications at the user level. from the little I can gleaned from the console messages below, I thought I'd managed to stop it, if not understand it last night when I followed instructions for deleting all traces of the Google Update Daemon. I've not been using any Google apps whatsoever, so I was surprised to see that in Console. What's more surprising, and perhaps a little distressing, is that the same thing occurred this evening, when the Google Daemon is long gone. I don't have that log because I can't recall precisely what time it occurred. I'll do a search and provide it if you wish, though. In the meantime, any help with this would be extremely appreciated. I've asked over at Apple Discussions but I think it might be a little deeper than those manning the boards this weekend are comfortable with. It's certainly beyond my meager skills. With apologies in advance if this is more lines thank you need. • Why does Google Chrome ignore "last_known_google_url" property in "Local State" file?

  I want to force my Google Chrome web browser (version 21.0.1180.89, 64-bit) to use non-localized search (thus google in english) through address bar, using the default Google search engine. To achieve that, I have to change value of the property last_known_google_url to https://www.google.com/?hl=en& in Local State file (for instance on Linux, the full path to the file is ~/.config/google-chrome/Local State). In that file, there should be the property: "browser": { "last_known_google_url": but it is not. Even if I add there the property, it has no impact on search - Google Chrome does not use the property and still searches in localized version. Another option is to put the property to Preferences file (for instance on Linux, the full path to the file is ~/.config/google-chrome/Default/Preferences) - which works perfectly when I start Google Chrome and do some search - but just after that, the property (actually the whole Preferences file) is overriden, so "the most important" trailing part ?hl=en& of the property value is removed - and without it, the non-localized search does not work anymore. • Word 2010, Multiple Columns, Vertical center one column only

  I am creating a document with two columns in Microsoft Word 2010. I want the first column to be centered vertically. I want the second column to be on the same page and the vertical placement to be from the top. I highlight my text in the first column that I want centered vertically, then go to Page Layout Margins Custom Margins Layout, you can choose to center the vertical alignment. I have choosen the "Section Start" to be "Column" and also tried "Continuous." In all cases it always shifts all of my second column information to a new page. I don't want my second column text to be on a new page, I want it to be on the same page and vertically aligned from the top--not the center. Am I understanding the functionality of the Section Start on the Layout tab correctly? Maybe the page layout isn't the correct formatting to use. What I am really doing is formatting columns. I haven't found anywhere to format the columns for this. Am I missing some important column formatting features? I know that I can use the paragraph formatting and add space above the first line of text to make it look like it is centered vertically. However, this is a template for a master document and will be changed frequently. I really would like the first column text to be automatically formatted to be centered vertically without having to go in and manually change the space above the paragraph every time. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

• Preventing h/w RAID cards from dropping slow JBOD disks

  I'm considering buying a used SAS h/w RAID card for externally attaching HDDs to an HP ProLiant I'm setting up. However, I only require RAID functionality on some of the drives. Theoretically it should be simple to JBOD the other drives, but some of them are inexpensive SATA disks and probably cannot have TLER disabled. I'd like to know, prior to actually ordering a RAID card, whether typically RAID cards would still enforce dropping of disks that do not respond within a few seconds, even if the disk is in a JBOD, and whether there is any way to disable this. Ideally it would be nice to be able to select certain SAS ports that will be pass-through, bypassing the RAID engine entirely and just acting as an HBA for those ports. I know I could buy a separate SAS HBA but that seems like a waste of $ and is also impractical as it's a 1U server so space is extremely limited. My question then is whether the functionality I'm looking for (pass-through on certain ports or at least JBOD drives not getting themselves dropped due to slow response) is typical of proper h/w RAID cards such as PERC 5/E etc. I've browsed through the latter's manual but unfortunately, as with most user manuals, it states the obvious and doesn't state the unobvious. Is there a way to force Apache to report the exchange as a 404? My problem is that bogus requests coming from Bad Guys show up as "successful requests" in the various server statistics software I use (AWStats, Analog, etc). I'd love to have them show up on the Apache side as 404s so that they get filtered out from the stat reports that get generated. I tried adding the following line to my .htaccess, but it had no effect (I'm guessing for the same reason as the previous redirect rules): ErrorDocument 404 /index.php?error=404 Does anyone have a clever way to fix this annoyance? • Virus cleanup; Windows Automatic Updates service crashes in esent.dll

  Background I'm doing system recovery on an old WinXP SP1 system brought to me on suspicion of virus infection. After taking preliminary backups, I used MalwareBytes to detect and clean the infection. I might've even gotten it all. In the process, I've discovered (a) the system drive is showing signs of impending failure, and (b) the owner has been using the system's old crusty IE-6 instead of the up-to-date Firefox I've provided for him. So naturally, thinking I had a relatively stable system, I tried to hit the Windows Update site to install IE-8, in case further training doesn't stick. The update site told me it needed to update the installer, and I started that process. Soon after, wuauclt.exe started crashing, reporting addresses in module esent.dll. There's a Microsoft KB (910437) on a problem with that DLL, so I downloaded the hotfix and installed. The crashing did not stop. I attempted to install SP3 from the offline installer, but that didn't fix the issue either. The system is reporting a few hard drive / IDE controller errors, but they don't correlate to the crashes, so they aren't the direct cause. I've also attempted to rollback to the time between the infection removal and the first crashes, but that doesn't help. Question The hotfix I tried to install dealt with problem in transaction logs of the Extensible Storage Engine (ESE) database. I suspect this issue is similar, but that the database itself (whatever the ESE database is) is corrupted. Is there a way to clean or clear this database so that system operation returns to normal? Can someone enlighten me as to what the ESE database actually is, and where it resides? Can I just locate some files and delete them to bring this under control?

• Can't install mysql 5.1 on a windows machine because the last install left artifacts.

  After uninstalling mysql 5.1 (64 bit version) I cannot install the win32 version! Apparently the devs felt it neccasery to leave helpful artifacts behind? I have rebooted my machine but no effect.. • Failed to re-publish a page - Tridion 2011 SP1

  We are getting some strange error when re-publishing the same page. The page was published successfully the first time and we can see the page from presentation server. It failed with the following error (see below) when we tried to publish it again (no change to page). The page ran OK within template builder and we got the correct html output, it failed in the last committing deployment step (Prepare Transport, Transporting, Preparing Deployment and Deploying are all successful). Once it fails to publish the second time, it always fails to publish, and we can't un-publish it either. Also when we make a copy of the failed page and create a new page, we can publish the new page first time, the new page then fails to publush the second time with the same error. Does anyone know what would cause this error? any help would be greatly appreciated.   In our environment we have several applications that are installed that have a need to run a little prompt the first time they run eg Media player, Google earth etc. The problem is we have many users on many different computers. And the computers have deepfreeze running on them which removes the users profile once the computer is restarted. So next time that user logs in they have to go through the whole thing of run once again. I have managed to prevent IE runonce using group policy and office run once from using the office customisation tool. Is there a way to make this happen for other applications. On windows xp we used to copy a user that has run all the apps and place their default profile into the default profile so that new users get that profile template. Now with windows 7 the process of copy profiles is not as easy. Is there an easy way to copy profiles in win 7 or is there a better way (eg modify reg or app data) to prevent apps from performing an initial run. Thanks

• Installing and running two postgresql versions on different ports (or two instances of same server)

  I have postgresql 9.1 installed on my machine (Ubuntu). I need another postgresql server that would run next to the old one. Exact version does not matter, but I'm thinking of using 9.2 version. How could I properly install and run another postgresql version without screwing old one (like upgrading). So those versions would run independently on different ports. Old one on 5432 and new one on 5433 for example. The reason I need this is for two OpenERP versions databases. If I run two OpenERP servers (with different versions) on single postgresql port, it crashes because new OpenERP version detects old versions database and tries to run it, but it crashes because it uses another schemes. P.S or maybe I could just run same postgresql server on two ports? Update So far I tried this: /usr/lib/postgresql/9.1/bin/pg_ctl initdb -D main2 It created new cluster. I changed port to 5433 in new clusters directory postgresql.conf file. Then ran this: /usr/lib/postgresql/9.1/bin/pg_ctl -D main2 -l logfile start I got response server starting. But when I tried to enter new cluster's template database with: psql template1 -p 5433 I got this error: psql: could not connect to server: No such file or directory Is the server running locally and accepting connections on Unix domain socket "/var/run/postgresql/.s.PGSQL.5433"? Also now when I try to stop server with: /usr/lib/postgresql/9.1/bin/pg_ctl -D main2 -l logfile start I get this error: pg_ctl: PID file "main2/postmaster.pid" does not exist Is server running? So I don't understand if server is running and what I'm missing here? Update Found what was wrong. Stupid me. I didn't notice that when I changed port in .conf file, that line was commented already. So actually I didn't change anything first time, but thought I did and it used default 5432 port.

  Hello All, I'm using Community engine. It is really a great job But I encountered a strange phenomenon I couldn't solve it. This problem happens only when I open any page contains tinymce by using safari or chrome browsers. There is a weird code injecting itself in the original code. I deployed CE on my laptop and my server. I didn't see this problem locally but sometimes (not always) this problem appears on my server.
