Lessons learned from Word 2007 automation with c# 2008

My organization has an ongoing project to take documents produced for internal regulations and such, change some of the formatting and then export it as PDF. Our requirements were that only one person would be doing this, but it has been painfully tedious and sometimes error-prone to do by hand. Enter the fearless developer to automate the situation! Since I am one of those guys that just plain does not like VB, I wanted to do the automation in the ever-so-much-more-familiar C#. While Microsoft had made a dll that makes such a task easier, documentation on MSDN is pretty lame and most of the forumns and posts on the internet had little to do with my task. So, I feel like I can give back to the community and make a post here of the things I have learned so far. I hope this is helpful to whoever stumbles upon it. Steps to do this: 1) First of all, make some sort of a project and use some sort of a means to get the filename of the word document you are trying to open. You will need to have a copy of word open and a copy of your word document that you want to modify open to be able to make the changes that are needed. The word interop dll likes using ref on all the parameters passed in, and likes to have them as objects. If you don't want to specify the parameter, you have to give it a "Type.Missing". JSON Feed Appears to be XHR when it should be JS

I don't get why it'd doing this with the 2nd feed (appearing as a XHR call rather than just JS [looking at it in Firefox/Firebug]). The 2nd feed has the exact same MIME type as Flickr's JSON feed, yet the PortlandOregon.gov one shows as XHR and i get a NULL callback when using $.getJSON and if i use $.ajax with a 'json' or 'jsonp' type i get nothing at all. If i do the Flickr one i get the normal "[object Object]" callback. Whats going on? Please help! This has been such a headache for about a week. And i have authorization to change the feed, but i have to request the change, so if anyone knows for absolute sure let me know that! Host And Expose Application to local small network

I developed a little application (web application) using JavaEE+MySql. I try to keep some data and .. from time to time to get some reports using my data. My problem is I have to access this application from 4-5 computers in the office. They are connected through a switch. It's a typical small office network, nothing fancy. I need some advice on how to do this. I mean for a small application with no external communication is it mandatory to use an Apache machine? I'd use a simple Tomcat container on the "server machine" (which is my computer, a windows machine) and .. basically .. I would like to permit the access to my colleagues also. I don't have any knowledge about concurrency (I know mysql permits concurrent access) so I would like some configuration tips also.

Hi, I've been running a cloud drive snapshot in dev for a while now with no probs. I'm now trying to get this working in Azure. I can't for the life of me get it to work. This is my latest error: Microsoft.WindowsAzure.Storage.CloudDriveException: Unknown Error HRESULT=D000000D ---> Microsoft.Window.CloudDrive.Interop.InteropCloudDriveException: Exception of type 'Microsoft.WindowsAzure.CloudDrive.Interop.InteropCloudDriveException' was thrown. at ThrowIfFailed(UInt32 hr) at Microsoft.WindowsAzure.CloudDrive.Interop.InteropCloudDrive.Mount(String url, SignatureCallBack sign, String mount, Int32 cacheSize, UInt32 flags) at Microsoft.WindowsAzure.StorageClient.CloudDrive.Mount(Int32 cacheSize, DriveMountOptions options) Any idea what is causing this? I'm running both the WorkerRole and Storage in Azure so it's nothing to do with the dev simulation environment disconnect. I have 2 databases with a 2 tables with HierachyID fields. For one database I can get a dal cs file, for the other database I cannot get a dal cs file ? HBus is a database I can get the dal cs for, ... SqlMetal /server:.\SQLSERVER2008 /database:HBus /code:HBusDC.cs /views /functions /sprocs /namespace:HBusDC /context:HBusDataContext This kicks me out a file, ... which works, but excludes the HierarchyID field for the table and includes all other fields for that table. This is OK I do not mind. Unless there's something new in Grails 1.2.1 or Groovy that I'm not understanding. They should be of the same type because the values are both the value returned by Calendar.getInstance().get(Calendar.YEAR)

simpledateformat parsing date with 'Z' literal

I am trying to parse a date that looks like this: 2010-04-05T17:16:00Z This is a valid date per http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc3339.txt. The 'Z' literal "imply that UTC is the preferred reference point for the specified time." If I try to parse it using SimpleDateFormat and this pattern: yyyy-MM-dd'T'HH:mm:ss It will be parsed as a Mon Apr 05 17:16:00 EDT 2010 SimpleDateFormat is unable to parse the string with these patterns: yyyy-MM-dd'T'HH:mm:ssz yyyy-MM-dd'T'HH:mm:ssZ I can explicitly set the TimeZone to use on the SimpleDateFormat to get the expected output, but I don't think that should be necessary. Is there something I am missing? Is there an alternative date parser?

How do you convert date taken from a bash script to milliseconds in a Java program?

I am writing a piece of code in Java that needs to take a time sent from a bash script and parse the time to milliseconds. When I check the millisecond conversion on the date everything is correct except for the month I have sent which is January instead of March. Here is the variable I create in the bash script, which later in the script I pass to the Java program: TIME=`date +%m%d%Y_%H:%M:%S` Here is the Java code which parses the time to milliseconds: String dt = "${scriptstart}"; java.text.SimpleDateFormat scriptStart = new java.text.SimpleDateFormat("MMDDyyyy_HH:mm:ss"); long start = scriptStart.parse(dt).getTime(); The goal of this statement is to find the elapsed time between the start of the script and the current system time. My input is String formated as the following: 3/4/2010 10:40:01 AM 3/4/2010 10:38:31 AM My code is: DateFormat dateFormat = new SimpleDateFormat("dd/mm/yyyy hh:mm:ss aa"); try { Date today = dateFormat.parse(time); System.out.println("Date Time : " + today); } catch (ParseException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } the output is: Sun Jan 03 10:38:31 AST 2010 Sun Jan 03 10:40:01 AST 2010 I'm not sure from where the day (Sun) came from? or (AST)? and why the date is wrong? I just wanted to keep the same format of the original String date and make it into a Date object. I'm using Netbeans 6.8 Mac version.

Unexpected behavior of IntentService

I used IntentService in my code instead of Service because IntentService creates a thread for me in onHandleIntent(Intent intent), so I don't have to create a Thead myself in the code of my service. I expected that two intents to the same IntentSerivce will execute in parallel because a thread is generated in IntentService for each invent. But my code turned out that the two intents executed in sequential way. It there anything I misunderstood of IntentService. To make two service intents execute in parallel, do I have to replace IntentService with service and start a thread myself in the service code? Error in Jaclplus component

Hi, I am working on Joomla 1.5 and our site is using the Bluehost server.Till March 9th, 2010 our site was working perfectly.And on March 10th,2010 , the following error was shown in the site as Warning: Unexpected character in input: '' (ASCII=28) state=1 in /home1/tcscoinc/public_html/tcsrnd/administrator/components/com_jaclplus/jac lplus.class.php on line 73 Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING in /home1/tcscoinc/public_html/tcsrnd/administrator/components/com_jaclplus/jac lplus.class.php on line 73 For time being, i have just renamed the file jaclplus.class.php to make the site to function. As we are using Jaclplus component and we have purchased the Jaclplus component from Byos Tech , i have checked in the membership details.And we found that our Membership has been expired on 03/10/2010 . I have asked them but they had replied that it may not be a problem on membership. Please anyone share what can be the reason for the error.I am not able to open that file(jaclplus.class.php) since its a binary file.

VS2010 Load Testing - Restricting ports

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\VisualStudio\10.0\EnterpriseTools\QualityTools\ListenPortRange\PortRangeStart HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\VisualStudio\10.0\EnterpriseTools\QualityTools\ListenPortRange\PortRangeEnd I've set these keys on the client as described but according to netstat the client is still listening on random ports. The controller is attempting to communicate on the same random ports as the client. Anyone experienced the same?

Unable to verify body hash for DKIM

I'm writing a C# DKIM validator and have come across a problem that I cannot solve. Right now I am working on calculating the body hash, as described in Section 3.7 Computing the Message Hashes. I am working with emails that I have dumped using a modified version of EdgeTransportAsyncLogging sample in the Exchange 2010 Transport Agent SDK. Instead of converting the emails when saving, it just opens a file based on the MessageID and dumps the raw data to disk. (Really, the rules for Body Canonicalization are quite ... simple.) Here is the real DKIM email with a signature using the simple algorithm (with only unneeded headers cleaned up).
