• Intel Ethernet Bottlenecking Internet?

  I'm having trouble with my internet speeds. So I just recent build a pc and everything is fine. I installed the Intel drivers and connected to the internet. It connects but I'm only half the speed I should be getting. My normal speed is 20mbps but speedtest.net is only showing 10. It can't be my ISP (which is TWC if anyone is asking) because my other devices like my laptop and my smartphone are showing 20 down. Heres my system: CPU: i5 4430 HSF: Stock cooler Mobo: Gigabyte Z87MX-D3H GPU: x2 MSI R7950-3GD5/OC BE RAM: Crucial Ballistix Tactical Tracer 8GB dual channel PSU: Silencer High Performance Power Supply 750 Watt 80+ (It's a subdivision of OCZ) HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 3TB SSD: Samsung 840 Evo 120 GB Case: Corsair Obsidian 350D Edit: I am using the stock adapter that is on the motherboard. I know for a fact that the cable is good because I used it on my laptop and it ran fine. Its a CAT5E cable. I also ran IPERF and its giving me the same results, 10 mbps.

So here goes: Can an entry level software engineer directly get a job in a security engineering position? I am a graduate student in software engineering with a lot of course work in security as well, including web application, network and mobile security. I want to know if in the current industry, can an entry level engineer take the risk to prepare towards finding a security related position, or is it always necessary for a year or 2 development experience before one should think about finding a security position. • Finding Bluetooth link key in Windows 7, to double pair a device on dualboot computer

  How can I dig up the Bluetooth link key for a paired device in Windows 7? Is this something that is dependent on the Bluetooth stack I'm using (Toshiba), or is there a generic place to store these in Windows 7? Note: I'm not talking about the six-digit code usually typed by the user during pairing - that is worthless since it's discarded after pairing process. What I mean is the 128-bit link key that the devices exchange during pairing, and use thereafter to encrypt all their Bluetooth traffic. Background: I dualboot Windows 7 / Ubuntu on my laptop, and I would like to have my phone paired to both OS's. Since the dualbooting computer has only one Bluetooth adapter and thus only one Bluetooth address, I cannot do two pairings to the phone, since on the second pairing (Windows) the phone just replaces the previous pairing (Linux) to the same Bluetooth address. A thread on Ubuntu forums pointed me to what I have to do - pair first on Linux, then on Windows, and then replace the link key on Linux side with the one Windows negotiated. I can find the Linux side pairing key from /var/lib/Bluetooth/[BD_ADDR]/linkkeys - no problems there. However, on Windows side I can't find the key. According to the forum post, on Windows side the key should be in SYSTEM\ControlSet002\services\BTHPORT\Parameters\Keys\[BD_ADDR] but while that registry key does exist, it has no subkeys. (And a similar registry path in ControlSet001 didn't have any subkeys either.) One thing I've been instructed to do is to capture all events during pairing with Sysinternals Process Monitor. I did this, but I haven't been able to find any useful information from the captured events, not even by exporting the data to a huge XML and grepping that with the BD_ADDRs (with or without colons). Gavin, a hardware hacker from Sydney, built an open-source POV (persistence of vision) staff after the Wi-Fi visualizer inspired him to begin playing with large POV builds. He built his POV staff using LED strips, wireless controllers, and a laptop to send the signals at the proper intervals to the staff. • BCM4313 wireless not working on Dell Inspiron 4010

  I have Ubuntu 11.10 installed today and trying to connect to wireless but its not working. It has been working correctly on my Windows 7. i am pretty new to Ubuntu. I tried suggestions listed in this forum but nothing seems to be working for wireless. It shows wireless card listed when I do- sudo lshw -C network: It displays wireless interface as BCM4313. my laptop- Dell Inspiron 4010 Ubuntu- 11.10 Any suggestions? It works when I connect LAN cable to same modem.

  A Day in the Life of an OpenWorld Attendee Part V Last day at OpenWorld.  The exhibits are closed, and the final few presentations are being given.  I spent much of the day meeting with customers to talk about SOA/OSB and Coherence.  Main event of the day was the farewell party which was loud and surprisingly well attended.  I was able to have lunch with Dave Felcey, Coherence PM, who has a great blog and is always ready to share his expertise with people. So that was OpenWOrld for another year.  I met a friend of a friend who attends OpenWorld every year and attends the Demo Grounds with a list of questions to ask people.  I think that illustrates the point that everyone approaches OpenWorld in a different way and looks to get different things from it.  For me OpenWorld is a great experience to feel the energy in Oracle and network with customers and partners.  Hope to see you there next year!

• Ubuntu 12.10 64bit host reboots when trying to install any guest system using VirtualBox

  I am having a really nasty problem with VirtualBox as everytime I try to install any guest OS(using ISO file as CD for installation media), the installation starts normally but as soon as it is about to start either installing to virtual hard drive or loading(e.g. as LiveFS) it causes the host system to reboot abruptly. Config is as below: Host system: Ubuntu 12.10 64bit - Intel® Core i7-2640M CPU @ 2.80GHz × 4 Virtualbox version: 4.1.18_Ubuntu r78361 Guest OS systems tried: 32bit version of FreeBSD 9, Debian 6, Tails 0.14 VM setup Tried to have the minimal setup necessary just in case it would avoid for each system to make sure I'd avoid conflicts, but to no avail. I've tried different values and combinations of the below but the problem still persists: Shared Clipboard: Disabled Show in fullscreen/seamless: Disabled Remember runtime changes: DIsabled Base Memory: 2048 MB Chipset: PIIX3 IO APIC: Disabled EFI: Disabled Absolute Pointing device: Disabled Processor(s): 1 CPU PAE/NX: Disabled VT-x/AMD-V: Disabled Video Memory: 12 MB 3d/2d acceleration: Disabled Storage IDE COntroller: PIIX3 (same as chipset instead of PIIX4) Use host I/O cache: No Audio: disabled Network adapter: NAT USB controller: disabled No shared folder Also another sideeffect of the reboot is that it appears that it does not log any information in the error log files; not making things any easier.   Recently, I read that Facebook ads are moving towards retargeting and got interested deeper into subject. Essentially, retargeting is technique advertisers use that tracks purchase intent by putting cookies into your browser and when you visit another website within ad network you will see ad for item you "wanted to buy". In order this to for, both publisher and advertiser need to work together. Publisher needs add couple of lines of javascript and publisher need to be able to read this info across sites. In most cases, javascript inserts iframe from adnetwork domain. Iframe script sets cookies for both host domain and remote adnetwork domain. However, Same Origin policy do not let iframes read/set content from parent domain. Is there something I'm missing here? Can someone explain how this technique actually works?

• Wireless keeps shutting off in Windows 7

  I have Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit installed on a Dell Latitude XT Tablet and for the life of me I can't figure out this really weird problem. The symptom is that the Wireless will disconnect from the AP and if I tell it to scan again, it says there are no APs in the area. I do have another wireless card in the laptop and if I disable the first one and enable the second, I am able to get onto the wireless however if I want to use the first card again I have to restart. I tried enabling/disabling the device, nothing will kick start the wireless again in the first card without a restart. I even tried different drivers. So, it seems it is random but it does occur more often when there is increased network activity (ie downloading a large file). The laptop doesn't seem to be overheating. I have tried the following: Under "Change Advanced Power Settings" for the current power profile, I set the "Wireless Adapter settings" to "Maximum Performance". Under device manger, I went to the card in question, and went to the advanced tab and set the "Power Saving mode" to "MAX_PSP" Both cards I have seem to exhibit the behavior after awhile. Both models of those cards are: Dell Wireless 1505 Draft 802.11n WLAN Mini-Card Gigabyte GN-WS30N 802.11n mini WLAN Card Has anyone have any ideas or ran into this before?

• Broadcom 4365 wireless driver on 12.04 with 3.4 / 3.5 kernel

  I used this package to install the driver on 3.2 Kernel and it was working perfectly. Unfortunately the system used to freeze randomly with 3.2 kernel so I installed 3.4 kernel, now there is no freezing, the only problem is that my wifi card is not working, I tried to re-install the package, but didn't work. I can see the driver in the "additional drivers" and it say that it is active, but when I execute iwconfig it doesn't show up. I've even tried ndiswraper and that didn't work either. my lspci: 01:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation Device 4365 (rev 01)

• How to diagnose storage system scaling problems?

  We are currently testing the maximum sequential read throughput of a storage system (48 disks total behind two HP P2000 arrays) connected to HP DL580 G7 running RHEL 5 with 128 GB of memory. Initial testing has been mainly done by running DD-commands like this: dd if=/dev/mapper/mpath1 of=/dev/null bs=1M count=3000 In parallel for each disk. However, we have been unable to scale the results from one array (maximum throughput of 1.3 GB/s) to two (almost the same throughput). Each array is connected to a dedicated host bust adapter, so they should not be the bottleneck. The disks are currently in JBOD configuration, so each disk can be addressed directly. I have two questions: Is running multiple DD commands in parallel really a good way to test maximum read throughput? We have noticed very high SWAPIN-% numbers in iotop, which I find hard to explain because the target is /dev/null How shoud we proceed in trying to find the reason for the scaling problem? Do you thing the server itself is the bottleneck here, or could there be some linux parameters that we have overlooked?

• ubuntu 11.10 CellC data card

  In 11.10 I find that I can connect to the internet via broadband connection successfully. The problem is that I cannot have the data card attached to the machine while the machine boots up. If I leave the data card in the machine during startup, the data card is not picked up and I then cannot connect to the internet. I must first boot up my machine, login, attach the data card into the usb port, wait so 30 seconds. The broadband connection name will then appear in the network dropdown at the top of the screen. An internet connect is now possible via broadband. Please let me know what must be done to fix this. Thanks Armien

• Ubuntu 12.10, Unity, AMD 12.11 beta drivers, AMD APP SDK 2.7 and OpenCL detection of multiple gpus

  I'm using Ubuntu 12.10, AMD 12.11 beta drivers, AMD APP SDK 2.7 and OpenCL. I have three amd radeon 7990s plugged in each of which are a dual 7970 so I have six gpus altogether. I plan to go up to eight in a few days. Windows couldn't use even 4 but linux works fine with 6 so far. The strange thing is that the six gpus are only detected by OpenCL in unity (the ubuntu default window manager). If I switch to e17, blackbox or fluxbox or anything else for that matter OpenCL only detects one. I'm using a simple OpenCL program to list all devices to check. I've also checked the output of aticonfig --list-adapters, fglxinfo and clinfo. The first two always show six in all window managers wheras clinfo shows 6 in unity but 1 gpu in all other WMs. I'm also using an X config generated by aticonfig --initial -f --adapter=all. I'm also only using one monitor. I've also checked using lsmod that the fglrx module is loaded in all WMs. So I have two questions. Why does OpenCL see six gpus only in unity? How can I enable six gpus on other lightweight WMs? Basically I'm getting at what determines how many gpus the OpenCL runtime sees? Thanks.

• How to install Edubuntu on a system with low memory (256 Mb)?

  I'm preparing an old system with 256 Mb RAM to send it to some children. It doesn't have Ethernet controller and there are no Internet access at the destination. I've chosen Edubuntu for obvious reasons and modified it with UCK trying to minimize memory usage just to install, let alone using it yet. But Ubiquity won't start even in openbox (edited /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf) because there are no space left on /cow right after booting. I've already deleted things like ibus, zeitgeist, update-manager (no network access after all), twisted-core, plymouth logos. I'm thinking about creating a swap partition on HDD, can it be later added to expand this /cow ? Is there a package for the text-mode installation which is used on Alternate CDs? I don't want to re-create Edubuntu from an Alternate CD. This behavior is reproducible in VM limited to 256Mb RAM.

• Slow browsing through IE on Windows Server 2012

  We've run into strange issue on the freshly installed servers. H/W: IBM server X3550 M4 7914; OS: Windows Server 2012 Std. Then we try to browse on the servers thru IE, not all sites are opened or it takes too long time to open the page, i.e. very few of them can be opened. Local FW are disabled. Servers are in a new subnet and traffic is allowed for it. VLAN is configured properly Another Windows Server 2012 host is running OK and Internet access works fine, but it is VM running on Hyper-V 2012. No proxy is used on the network. At the same time, if one tries to establish telnet session to any site on 80/443 ports - it does work. Google works as well. I've tried to configure single Qlogic adapter to check if the issue remains - it does. Teaming is configured with the means of QLogic, not by built-in functionality. IE Enhanced Security is disabled. IE settings were reset, more than once. Why would certain sites work while others not - Idk. I also tried to disable ecncapability and restart server - no luck netsh int tcp set global ecncapability=disabled Any thoughts? UPD1 VMQ is disabled. Servers are not running Hyper-V. UPD2 Servers were rebuilt from scratch, got a mail a few mins ago. Issue still remains. Teaming is now configured with the means of Windows Server 2012.

• Learning low latency C++ and Java?

  I'm currently in a role where I dont get to write any C++ or Java. However, the role is good because provides me with exposure to the business side (i'm interested in finance). Eventually I would like to get into high frequency trading infrastructure. Therefore, outside of work hours i'd like to maximise the knowledge I can gain about high performance Java and C++. I already have the Java Performance Tuning book, which is ok but not impressive. Can people recommend anymore latency blogs/books/websites for learning about making C++/C/Java or even Unix very fast? Or perhaps making the network parts of the OS (if re-writing Unix components) faster? EDIT: Or perhaps we could make this THE thread for advice on writing fast code

• PC -> TV HDMI suddenly doesn't work, any other option does

  So my parents wanted to connect their PC to their TV, so they bought a 10m (35 ft) cable. It all worked perfectly. Then my mom tripped over the cable, breaking it. She somehow got a free replacement, but at the same time some more expensive one from an uncle. Now the problem is that this suddenly doesn't work anymore (TV saying "Format not supported"). I've tried several other things to pinpoint the actual problem, but none brought me something conslusive: PC (hdmi) to TV doesn't work (both cables) PC (hdmi) to TV doesn't work (short cable) Laptop (hdmi) to TV work (same cables) BluRay (hdmi) to TV works (same cables) PC (hdmi) to monitor works (same cables) PC (DVI w/ adapter HDMI) to TV works (same cables) I've tried different ports, tried Linux, reinstalling drivers (the graphics card is internal using an i5 sandy bridge. Normally it's running Windows 7 Home Prem, the TV being a Philips 37PFL7605H). So basically, everything works, except that thing what we want. The only things I am thinking of is that the sound is interfering or that the HDMI-output is somehow broken. Or is it anything else? I'm kind of lost.

• Ubuntu 12.10 Help! Everything is incredibly slow

  I installed 12.10 from usb onto this machine. Intel celeron 2.00 GHz 496MB RAM I had to modify GNU-Grub to read "nomodeset" or i could not see the GUI. I have an Nvidia graphics card. Takes about 2 minutes to boot. The icons on the left of desktop take about 1 min to slowly open their menu. Have a network connection but mozilla is 404 and i cannot update. Where can i find a blow by blow explanation for troubleshooting and repairing this problem?

• Advice on how to understand in general and in practice IT Infrastructure

  My IT knowledge resides mainly in SW development. I have just some basic know how about networks. On the net I tried to get information and read books in order to better understand the overall IT infrastrcuture, but all the sources I found are too generic or, mainly, too detailed in just one aspect, making me lost. Could anyone suggest some books or web resources as good compromise in details? My goal would be able to understand the network issues and security threats when, for example, two remote system have to be setup and put in connection each other. Considering this scenario there are several aspects to consider: firewalls, intranet/internet interconnections, certificates for httpS, etc. The argument is quite wide, therefore I was looking for something that might help to start to understand this subject without going too deep in details (Computer Networks from A.Tanenbaum is a wonderful milestone, but way too specific for my scope). Concurrency: How do you approach the design and debug the implementation? Given that each user's computers may have different performance characteristics with respect to calculations, memory, disk I/O bandwidth and network I/O bandwidth, and that it is difficult to implement an automated self-tuning system in your software, how much configurability should we give to the end-users so that they can find ways (by trial-and-error?) to improve our software's efficiency? If we give users the ability to change these settings, how do we give visual feedback to users so they can measure the performance changes?
