  • Programmatically creating linked tables in access

    Hi all, We need to find a way to programatically *link all the tables* in a SQL Server database to an access db. We will be invoking this access database from a program that uses .net/SQL Server 2008. While invoking the application we would like to add the linked tables so that the users can just run the reports/modules from access without having to worry about linking the tables. Is there a way we can do this? Thanks!

  • Suggest an alternative way to organize/build a database solution.

    We are using Visual Studio 2010, but this was first conceived with VS2003. I will forward the best suggestions to my team. The current setup almost makes me vomit. It is a C# solution with most projects containing .sql files. Because we support Microsoft, Oracle, and Sybase, and so home-brewed a pre-processor, much like C preprocessor, except that substitutions are performed by a home-brewed C# program without using yacc and tools like that. #ifdefs are used for conditional macro definitions, and yeah - macros are the way this is done. A macro can expand to another macro or two, but this should eventually terminate. Only macros have #ifdef in them - the rest of the SQL-like code just uses these macros. Now, the various configurations: Debug, MNDebug, MNRelease, Release, SQL_APPLY_ALL, SQL_APPLY_MSFT, SQL_APPLY_ORACLE, SQL_APPLY_SYBASE, SQL_BUILD_OUTPUT_ALL, SQL_COMPILE, as well as 2 more. Also: Any CPU, Mixed Platforms, Win32. What drives me nuts is having to configure it correctly as well as choosing the right one out of 12 x 3 = 36 configurations as well as having to substitute database name depending on the type of database: config, main, or gateway. I am thinking that configuration should be reduced to just Debug, Release, and SQL_APPLY. Also, using 0, 1, and 2 seems so 80s ... Finally, I think my intention to build or not to build 3 types of databases for 3 types of vendors should be configured with just a tic tac toe board like: XOX OOX XXX In this case it would mean build MSFT+CONFIG, all SYBASE, and all GATEWAY. Still, the overall thing which uses a text file and a pre-processor and many configurations seems incredibly clunky. It is year 2010 now and someone out there is bound to have a very clean and/or creative tool/solution. The only pro would be that the existing collection of macros has been well tested. Have you ever had to write SQL that would work for several vendors? How did you do it?   • javascript autocompletion for DSL. (e.g.: SQL)

    I want to give the user a web-page where he can type some simple SQL. select * from myTable. What I would like is to have the autocompletion area to help typing: sel [selECT] select * f [select * fROM] select * from [select * fROM column1] [select * fROM column2] ... Anybody can suggest if there is a nice open source library for this ? I am not really interested in the SQL (I will have to parse a DSL) I am more interested on a powerful autocompletion text area widget.

  • Nhibernate generate plain sql query instead of execution statement

    Using SQL profiler, I was able to find the query generated from Nhibernate was executed in the EXEC sp_executesql N'select ...' fashion. I am wondering if there is any way to force Nhibernate to generate the plain Select ... statement instead. The reason I want this is because apparently SQL Server generated different execution plans for them, and in my scenario, the plain "select ..." runs MUCH faster.

    I'm in the process of creating an SSIS package on a server (server1) that looks at the data in a sql db on another site (server2) and copies relevant rows across. The SQL statement required is: SELECT * FROM server2.ordersTable WHERE OrderID Not In (SELECT OrderID FROM server1.ordersTable This selects data from server1 which isn't in the table on server2 (based on order id) I then need to insert the result into a table on server1 How would I approach this? What components do I need etc...?

I've considered creating C# classes from the XSD schema using the xsd.exe tool and letting something like Subsonic figure out how to make a shiny database out of it, but not sure if it's the best way to approach it. Has anyone managed to elegantly import XSD files into SQL Server?

    We are performing a pen test on a simple asp application that uses MS SQL Database. It seems for the authentication they are using dynamic constructed queries but escaping single qoutes. When we use Unicode quotes like %uFFO7,%u02b9 etc we are able to successfully inject SQL injections. Want to understand is it more a kind of configuration issue of IIS server to cannonicalize Unicode characters or the way the validation function to escape single quotes is written is the cause of the problem?
