• No sound/audio after resuming from sleep

  I've made a fresh UEFI install of Ubuntu 13.10 (64 bit) on a Lenovo Ideapad Z510 laptop with Intel i5 4200M processor. Ubuntu is the only OS installed on the computer, secure boot disabled. Everythings works fine (backlight issue fixed after editing rc.local file), the only minor trouble I have is resuming the laptop from "sleep" mode. If I close the lid and then wake the laptop opening it again, there is no audio/sound. I need to restart the computer (not even logging out helps). If I suspend the computer in a graphical way (not closing the lid): gearwheel in top right of the screen -- suspend and wake it up/turning on, audio works with no issues. Ideas how to fix this?   I just installed ubuntu. things seems great but I have no sound. When I go to the settings menu I chose from various setup. I found one that work which had 4 speakers a subwofer and a front speaker. When I test it the sound works fine. However, when I try playing an *.mp3 file or try to watch a video on you tube I get no sound at all. I have a dual boot with windows XP and there is no problem in windows at all. Below is my setup. • What is the best way of testing Ubuntu?

  I'm a little confused as to whether I should install Ubuntu on its own partition on my hard drive, use VirtualBox or another virtualization package to install it, or use Wubi to install it directly on top of my current OS (Win 7). I definitely want to learn and use Ubuntu, so this is not just for playing around with it. Also, if I choose to partition, should I partition the hard drive myself or should I let the Ubuntu installation menu do it for me? I understand that I am going to need a main partition, for Ubuntu's core components, and also a swap partition. Then there is the option to add a partition for "home"- I don't understand what combination of these partitioning options I should choose, or whether it is better to partition in Windows before I install Ubuntu or just partition my hard drive when I install Ubuntu itself

• How do I duplicate a Box2d simulation, mid-simulation?

  I want to serialize the state mid-game, send it over the network to an identical computer (same CPU, same OS, same binary), load it there, and have the two games run in tandem doing the exact same simulation, without one of them drifting off and going haywire. In short: I want pop-in, pop-out networking support on my HIGHLY physics-intensive game, where sending object coordinates every few seconds is impossible, due to having thousands of objects, and many clients. I tried this with Box2D, and saving an object's location/velocity/etc wasn't enough... there's internal state that's not accessible through any public methods. My current workaround is to force EVERY client to save its entire worldstate and reload it from scratch, whenever a new player connects... but this is obviously bad practice, because it hangs the game for everyone whenever someone new connects. However, it works, with zero desynchronization. So, anyone know of any other techniques that can help me? Or should I just kiss my project goodbye?

  I had Zorin 7 Encrypted. I accidentally deleted important GRUB data trying to make more room in the boot folder i think? So the computer would no longer boot up. Anyways, I installed a second Linux OS on the same laptop, but I am unable to access all of my important information that is still on the encrypted partition. When i go to mount it to access everything, it asks for the encryption password... however, it tells me the password is incorrect, which I know 100% that it is the correct password. Someone please help me! Inform me how I can access this encrypted partition or restore the data so that I can boot the computer in Zorin 7 again.

• Full brightness and keyboard backligh at boot

  I own an Asus N56VZ, and each time I start Ubuntu (13.10 and prior versions) my screen brightness and keyboard backlights reset their values to the max. Ubuntu doesn't save my settings on reboot. I was wondering if someone could help me with this? It is horrible when, at night, I turn on my computer - it is like looking directly to the sun, and it hurts my eyes. I tried googling and none of the pages I found actually helped. I think my issue might be grub-related. I have a dual-boot with Windows 8.1, so before I start my computer I see grub to choose my operating system. My screen starts at full brightness as soon as I reach grub. Maybe he is making the OS forget about my last values, overriding it with its? Does someone knows how to solve this? Thanks in advance :) PS: I'm using bumblebee with Nvidia driver 304, but this issue existed before I installed it.

  I have to copy the file from my desktop to my mounted directory. I was using the following command to copy the file from my desktop to mounted directory. os.system("cp -f /home/Desktop/filename /media/folder_1"). It works fine. But the problem is while copying the file from my source to mounted directory(folder_1) if any interruption is happens like network down, then the system continuously keep on trying. It couldn't skip that process. Finally, when the network comes the files are again copy to my mounted directory. Due to this continuous trying, next time i try to move the content it throws "permission denied" error. How do i copy the file only once, if any network issues happen then it will not keep try to copy, instead of that, it throws the error. If you know, Let me. Its very useful to me.

  Just finished installing Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin on my HP Mini 110-1125NR and im having small, but rather irritating issues. I installed it over the Windows 7 (starter) which came with the netbook. Firstly, it will only boot from the USB flashdisk. If i try to boot from the hardrive, it goes to a black screen. Second, built-in wireless wont activate. system says its enabled and on, but the light indicator is still orange (as if its off), and i cant get a signal from my home wi-fi I havent found any solved threads for inspiration, and mos of them are pretty old (1 year +) so i thought of giving a try to see if any of you guys System is: HP Mini 110-1100 1gb memory Intel Atom CPU N270 @ 1.60GHz x 2 Os - Precise Pangolin - Ubuntu 12.04 160gb Hard disk If any of you are aware of the solutions of my issues it'd be awesome Thanks in advance for any help!

  I need to develop a programm that is going to read some information from a special USB device and access information via Web Socket (socket.io preferred). My client wants to deploy this app on Mac OS X, Windows, Android and iOS. I was looking for development softwares valid for both: Desktop and Mobile, but it is still not clear for me and that´s what I found. Unity - Looks very good but to create a native plugin for reading from the device it lloks like I need the PRO edition. Adobe Air - Looks good but I´m not sure if I can write Native Plugins for all wanted platforms. LiveCode - Still inmature (lots of bugs) and I don´t know if it is possible to write native plugins for my device. Is there any other good platform for my case? What´s your option?

  This might sound weird but there's an explanation for my question: I want to write something to impress a potential recruiter, and I want (to strenghten my skills) to create a program which should communicate with kernel mode driver(s). I'm not starting from a goal and trying to design the system to achieve it, I'm doing the opposite: designing the system and trying to justify it with a meaningful goal. So here comes the question: what could a kernel mode driver be possibly useful to? • Unable to use separate X-Screen's GTX 550ti Ubuntu 12.10

  I am currently trying to get from "Twin View" to using separate X screen's on Ubuntu 12.10, however I'm not having a great deal of luck. I am using an Nvidia GeForce GTX 550 Ti and am on driver version 304.51 Initially, when I turn on the separate X screens option, presents me on the 1 monitor with a box to accept the changes, however the 2nd screen goes black, and effectively, Ubuntu only seems to recognise the one screen. When I reboot, I boots back into Ubuntu with both screens working in Twinview. I'm not too sure where to start, but my xrandr can be found: Xrandr Any help is greatly appreciated, this is the last but one thing I need to make Ubuntu my only OS, so fingers crossed we can crack it :)

  So, I'm slightly computer literate, and find myself frustrated and overwhelmed. My computer is a acer laptop, extensa 5620-6572. I have a dual boot with windows vista and ubuntu 12.04. The ubuntu 12.04 I got was from an upgrade, not a disc. I tried to load ubuntu 12.04, and it gets stuck in the "busybox", and I don't know how to proceed from there. I went to my windows partition and downloaded Ex2 from http://sourceforge.net/projects/ext2fsd/ and thought I'd try access my files and save them to a external HD. Then when I restarted my computer and went to windows, it always freezes after it loads the OS. So then, I downloaded and burned a ubuntu 12.04 boot disk, and the disk works fine. But I still can't figure out how to view files on my harddrive.

• My Computer in Ubuntu?

  I was wondering if Ubuntu has an equivalent to the Windows feature "My Computer", which lists all available drives/storage devices. Typically, My Computer shows C:, which can be opened to view all of your directories and files. At this point, it is very similar to Ubuntu's Home Folder, but I am looking for something that allows me to view/select all available HDD's/Partitions. Here's my reason: I found a 6gb IDE HDD in my basement, and got an IDE cable for it. My desktop computer has a SATA drive in it, but has an IDE slot, so I wanted to plug it in and see what might be on it. The drive seems to be recognized in BIOS, but I can't find it in Ubuntu to view files, and Ubuntu is the only OS on that particular computer. If anyone has any ideas as to how to view the contents of that drive WITHOUT formatting it or tampering with the contents in any way, I would greatly appreciate your help. Thanks in advance!

  I'm using empathy for the first few weeks now on Ubuntu 12.10. I can't find any symbols indicating a contact has the ability to do a video chat or voice chat... Though I can see a "Mobile" symbol which say "Online from a mobile or Phone device". PS: I can see a video call, Audio call option enables when I right click on a particular contact. It doesn't boot unless the USB drive which was used to install it is connected. It looks like the OS is installed on hard drive, but the boot record is in USB. However, I am not sure on this.   I have a Iomega Home Media Network Drive Cloud Edition 1TB that started clicking and then displayed a failure LED code Power LED and Red LED. I removed the SATA drive and inserted in a 'All in 1 HDD Docking Station' and connected to laptop by USB - Laptop has Win 7 OS. The dock is seen as drive E but cannot access and says 0% data etc. The drive does spin up when I power the dock. Web searches say the drive has EXT3 file system and to use Ubuntu to access drive. I have now setup a dual boot laptop but still do not see the drive using ubuntu. Is there something else I need to do to get it recognised etc. I really would like to recover the data, any suggestions please?
