• UI message passing programming paradigm

  I recently (about two months ago) read an article that explained some user interface paradigm that I can't remember the name of and I also can't find the article anymore. The paradigm allows for decoupling the user interface and backend through message passing (via some queueing implementation). So each user action results in a message being pased to the backend. The user interface is then updated to inform the user that his request is being processed. The assumption is that a user interface is stale by definition. When you read data from some store into memory, it is stale because another transaction may be updating the same data already. If you assume this, it makes no sense to try to represent the 'current' database state in the user interface (so the delay introduced by passing messages to a backend doesn't matter). If I remember correctly, the article also mentioned a read-optimized data store for rendering the user interface. The article assumed a high-traffic web application. A primary reason for using a message queue communicating with the backend is performance: returning control to the user as soon as possible. Updating backend stores is handled by another process and eventually these changes also become visible to the user. I hope I have explained accurately enough what I'm looking for. If someone can provide some pointers to what I'm looking for, thanks very much in advance.

• JavaScript objects and Crockford's The Good Parts

  I've been thinking quite a bit about how to do OOP in JS, especially when it comes to encapsulation and inheritance, recently. According to Crockford, classical is harmful because of new(), and both prototypal and classical are limited because their use of constructor.prototype means you can't use closures for encapsulation. Recently, I've considered the following couple of points about encapsulation: Encapsulation kills performance. It makes you add functions to EACH member object rather than to the prototype, because each object's methods have different closures (each object has different private members). Encapsulation forces the ugly "var that = this" workaround, to get private helper functions to have access to the instance they're attached to. Either that or make sure you call them with privateFunction.apply(this) everytime. Are there workarounds for either of two issues I mentioned? if not, do you still consider encapsulation to be worth it? Sidenote: The functional pattern Crockford describes doesn't even let you add public methods that only touch public members, since it completely forgoes the use of new() and constructor.prototype. Wouldn't a hybrid approach where you use classical inheritance and new(), but also call Super.apply(this, arguments) to initialize private members and privileged methods, be superior?

• Can defect containment metrics be readily applied at an organizational level when there is only a consistant organizational process framework?

  Defect containment metrics, such as total defect containment effectiveness (TDCE) and phase containment effectiveness (PCE), can be used to give a good indicator of the quality of the process. TDCE captures the defects that are captured at some point between requirements and the release of a product into the field, indicating the overall effectiveness of the entire process to find and remove defects. PCE provides more detail at each phase of the software development life cycle and how the defect detection and removal techniques are working. Applying these metrics makes sense at a level where you have a well-defined process and methodology for product development, often a project. However, some organizations provide a process framework that is tailored at the project level. This process framework would include the necessary guidance for meeting certifications (ISO9001, CMMI), practices for incorporating known good techniques (agile methods, Lean, Six Sigma), and requirements for legal or regulatory reasons. However, the specific details of how to gather requirements, design the system, produce the software, conduct test, and release are left to the product development teams. Is there any effective way to apply defect containment metrics at an organizational level when only a process framework exists at the organizational level? If not, what might be some ideas for metrics that can be distilled from each project (each using a tailored process that fits into the organizational process framework) that captures defect containment metrics to discuss the ability of the process to find and remove defects? The end goal of such a metric would be to consolidate the defect containment practices of a large number of ongoing projects and report to management. The target audience would be people in roles such as the chief software engineer and the chief engineer (of all engineering disciplines) for the organization. Although project specific data would be available, the idea is to produce something that quantifies the general effectiveness of all tailored processes across all ongoing projects. I would suspect that this data would also be presented as part of CMMI, ISO, or similar audits to demonstrate process quality.

  The sys.dm_db_stats_properties Dynamic Management Function returns information about the statistics that are currently on your database objects. This function takes two parameters, an object_id and a stats_id. Let’s have a look at the result set from this function against the AdventureWorks2012.Sales.SalesOrderHeader table. To obtain the object_id and stats_id I will use a CROSS APPLY with the sys.stats system table. SELECT sp.* FROM sys.stats s CROSS APPLY sys.dm_db_stats_properties(s.object_id, s.Stats_id) sp WHERE sp.object_id = object_id('Sales.SalesOrderHeader') The first two columns returned by this function are the object_id and the stats_id columns. The next column, ‘last_updated’, gives you the date and the time that a particular statistic was last updated. The next column, ‘rows’, gives you the total number of rows in the table as of the last statistic update date. The ‘rows_sampled’ column gives you the number of rows that were sampled to create the statistic. The ‘steps’ column represents the number of specific value ranges from the statistic histogram. The ‘unfiltered_rows’ column represents the number of rows before any filters are applied. If a particular statistic is not filtered, the ‘unfiltered_rows’ column will always equal the ‘rows’ column. Lastly we have the ‘modification_counter’ column which represents the number of modification to the leading column in a given statistic since the last time the statistic was updated. Probably the most important column from this Dynamic Management Function is the ‘last_updated’ column. You want to always ensure that you have accurate and updated statistics on your database objects. Accurate statistics are vital for the query optimizer to generate efficient and reliable query execution plans. Without accurate and updated statistics, the performance of your SQL Server would likely suffer. • What should I quote for a project I hope to get a job at the end of?

  Long story short: I applied for a (CakePHP, MySQL, etc) development job in London, UK. I grew up in Britain but am currently based quite a few thousand miles away in Canada, so I wasn't really expecting success. But quite a few emails and phone interviews later it seems that they really like me. At least to a point. Because such a major relocation would be a horrible thing to go wrong, they've sensibly suggested a trial run of getting me to build a website at a distance. I have the spec for this and it's quite a substantial amount of work. My problem is that I now need to suggest both a fee and a timescale for the job, and I haven't got any significant experience of working as a contractor. Looking at the spec, which is 1500 words of many concisely stated features, some fairly trivial and some moderately involved, I can easily imagine there being 2 weeks of intensive work there. (If everything went really well it might be closer to one week, but even though I want to impress, I definitely don't want to fall into the inexperienced-contractor trap of massively underestimating the amount of time a project will run to.) As an extra complication, there is no expectation that I should give up my day job to get this trial project done, so the hours will have to be clawed from evenings and weekends. I don't want to overcommit to a quick delivery date, only to find myself swiftly burning out due to an unrealistic workload. So, any advice for me? My main question is, what is a realistic hourly figure to demand of a stable but not excessively wealthy London-based company in the current market, bearing in mind that I'd like them to hire me afterwards? But any more general recommendations based on my circumstances above would be much appreciated too. Many thanks!

• JDBC Connection Pools in Glassfish

  I've been attempting to configure Glassfish 3.1.2.2 for ADF 11g and the need arose to create a jdbc connection pool to my Oracle XE 11g database. While this is really very trivial there were no samples of how to do this and documentation, while good, rarely ever provides concrete examples. After fumbling around for a few minutes searching for an example I gave up and figured it out on my own. Here are the steps for any of you that may be in need. This can be done either via the Glassfish command line tool asadmin or through the admin console. I'm doing this through the admin console. Start Glassfish and connect to the admin console with the credentials you defined at installation: http://localhost:4848 Navigate to Resources | JDBC | JDBC Connection Pools and select New. Be sure to enter Resource Type & Datasource Classname under General Settings tab. You can go with the defaults for Pool Settings etc... View Image Go to the Additional Properties tab and create username, password, and url properties with the respective values. View Image Navigate to Resources | JDBC | JDBC Resources and select New. Be sure to enter the JNDI Name and select the Pool Name for the jdbc connection pool you created previously. View Image Navigate to Configurations | server-config | JVM Settings and select the JVM Options tab. Add the values highlighted: -Doracle.jdbc.J2EE13Compliant=true is used to make sure the driver behaves in a JEE-compliant manner. View Image To integrate the JDBC driver into a GlassFish Server domain, copy the JAR files into the domain-dir/lib directory, then restart the server. The JAR file for the Oracle 11 database driver is ojdbc6dms.jar. An upcoming entry will demonstrate configuring Glassfish for Oracle ADF Applications.

Developed by the UK-based research firm Transport Intelligence, the new  Emerging Market Logistics Index rated 38 developing countries on 3 factors. 1. "Market size and growth attractiveness," considered a country's economic output, projected growth rate, and population size.  2. "Market compatibility," which examined how well-matched a nation was with the services offered by global logistics providers. This includes a country's security levels, market accessibility, foreign direct investment, distribution of wealth and population, and development of its service sector. 3. "Connectedness," which rated the efficiency of customs and border controls, liner shipping connections, and transportation infrastructure. India claimed the top spot due to its market size and growth prospects.   It is widely know that data modifications on table variables do not support parallelism, Peter Larsson has a good example of that here .  Whilst tracking down a performance issue,  I saw that using the OUTPUT clause also causes parallelism to not be used. By way of example,  first lets create two tables with a simple parent and child (one to one) relationship, and then populate them with 100,000 rows. Drop table ParentDrop table Childgocreate table Parent(id integer identity Primary Key,data1 char(255))Create Table Child(id integer Primary Key)goinsert into Parent(data1)Select top 1000000 NULL from sys.columns a cross join sys.columns b insert into ChildSelect id from Parentgo If we then execute update Parent set data1 =''from Parentjoin Child on Parent.Id = Child.Id where Parent.Id %100 =1 and Child.id %100 =1 We should see an execution plan using parallelism such as   However,  if the OUTPUT clause is now used update Parent set data1 =''output inserted.idfrom Parentjoin Child on Parent.Id = Child.Id where Parent.Id %100 =1 and Child.id %100 =1   The execution plan shows that Parallelism was not used Make of that what you will, but i thought that this was a pretty unexpected outcome. Update : Laurence Hoff has mailed me to note that when the OUTPUT results are captured to a temporary table using the INTO clause,  then parallelism is used.  Naturally if you use a table variable then there is still no parallelism

• VirtualBox 3.2 Release

  The latest version of VirtualBox is out - version 3.2.  It is the first release as Oracle VirtualBox and there are a lot of new features.  Many of these I see directly impacting the Oracle VDI solution in upcoming releases (just my guess, of course), and I am updating my notebook as I write this. Er... OK - Done!There are enough features that they warrant you taking a look at this two-page VirtualBox Community Bulletin.pdf.  No point in me restating them.If you and your organization haven't tried VirtualBox, or you haven't looked at it in a while, you owe it to yourself to give this a run.  This is small, simple, powerful, software that allows you to do way more than most people would ever need in hosting a Virtual machine on you local machine.  I routinely will do a demo on a two-year-old Macbook running OS X locally, plus a Solaris 10 VM running the Sun Ray server, and a Windows XP VM and hang a couple Sun Rays off of it - and the performance is stellar.You can subscribe to the mailing lists and get access to the Beta releases as they come out as well, if you are into 'bleeding edge'.40,000 downloads a day is the current rate (before this new release), but it will jump for sure now.  Might as well join in!

• Problem with WCF-SQL Adapter

  When using WCF receive adapter with SQL binding in Polling mode please be aware of the following problem. Problem: At some regular but seemingly random intervals the application stops processing new requests, places a lock on the database and prevent other application from accessing it. Initially it looked like DTC issue, as it was distributed transaction that stalled most of the time. Symptoms: Orchestration instances in Dehydrated state, receive location not picking up new messages, exclusive locks on database tables, errors in DTC trace. Cause: Microsoft has confirmed that there is a bug in the WCF-SQL adapter. In the receive adapter binding configuration there's receiveTimeout property set to 10 minutes by default. If during this period data is not found in the table the adapter would start new thread and allocate more memory without releasing old resources. Thus if there's no new data in the table for a long time a new thread will be created in the host instance every 10 minutes until it reaches threshold (1000) and then there's no threads left for this host instance and it can't start/complete any tasks. Then this host instance won't be able to do anything. If other artifacts are hosted in the instance they will suffer consequences as well. Solution: - Set receiveTimeout to the maximum time 24.20:31:23.6470000. - Place WCF-SQL receive locations in separate host to provide its own thread pool and eliminate impact on other processes - Ensure WCF-SQL dedicated host instances are restarted at interval less or equal to receiveTimeout to flush threads and memory - Monitor performance counters Process/Thread Count/BTSNTSvc{n} for thread count trend and respond to alert if it grows by restarting host instance If you use WCF-SQL Adapter in the Notification mode then make sure to remove sqlAdapterInboundTransactionBehavior otherwise this location will exhibit the same issue. In this case though, setting receiveTimeout doesn't help and new thread will be created at default intervals (10 min) ignoring maximum setting.

• Wifi range issues and intermittent dropouts, Thinkpad Edge

  If I am more than a couple of metres from my access point (and I'm seeing this across various APs) with my newish Thinkpad Edge 15, running 10.10, the wifi performance becomes ... flaky. My question is threefold: how do I get better wifi range, what can/should I do about those messages in dmesg, and most crucially, are the two related? As ever let me know if there's other information that would help! Edit: I am using this machine in exactly the same locations I used my previous Thinkpad (T61) running various older versions of Ubuntu, so I definitely feel there is something wrong, rather me having unreasonable expectations of range!
