• Install XP over Ubuntu. (Flash Drive)

  My girlfriend needs to install Windows XP over Ubuntu on her PC, because she need to run some software that Wine and a visual machine can't handle as well as the 'real' thing. Problem is, it seems very difficult to make a bootable flash drive with the files from a XP .iso from Ubuntu. All the guides I could find was about Windows 7, formatting the USB as NTFS, then use UNetbootin to extract the files to the USB. Problem is, that only works with 7, not XP. Does anyone know how I can make a bootable XP flash drive? Thanks! It's really important.

• Regex working in RedHat is not giving any result in Ubuntu

  My goal is to match specific files from specific sub directories. I have the following folder structure `-- data |-- a |-- a.txt |-- b |-- b.txt |-- c |-- c.txt |-- d |-- d.txt |-- e |-- e.txt |-- org-1 | |-- a.org | |-- b.org | |-- org.txt | |-- user-0 | | |-- a.txt | | |-- b.txt I am trying to list the files only inside the data directory. I am able to get the correct result using the following command in RHEL find ./testdir/ -iwholename "*/data/[!/].txt" a.txt b.txt c.txt d.txt e.txt If I run the same command in Ubuntu it is not working. Can anyone please tell me why it is not working in Ubuntu ?

• PHP5 getrusage() returning incorrect information?

  I'm trying to determine CPU usage of my PHP scripts. I just found this article which details how to find system and user CPU usage time (Section 4). However, when I tried out the examples, I received completely different results. The first example: sleep(3); $data = getrusage(); echo "User time: ". ($data['ru_utime.tv_sec'] + $data['ru_utime.tv_usec'] / 1000000); echo "System time: ". ($data['ru_stime.tv_sec'] + $data['ru_stime.tv_usec'] / 1000000); Results in: User time: 29.53 System time: 2.71 Example 2: for($i=0;$i<10000000;$i++) { } // Same echo statements Results: User time: 16.69 System time: 2.1 Example 3: $start = microtime(true); while(microtime(true) - $start < 3) { } // Same echo statements Results: User time: 34.94 System time: 3.14 Obviously, none of the information is correct except maybe the system time in the third example. So what am I doing wrong? I'd really like to be able to use this information, but it needs to be reliable. • Problem resolving many of the Web Pages

  I am presently running Ubuntu 12.04 and using Chrome/Firefox along with OpenDNS (have tried Google Public DNS as well as DNS of my ISP). Suddenly, a lot of websites that I visit frequently don't load anymore. Some of them are imgur, yahoo, fed-sudoku, microsoft and addons page of firefox. I am sure there are many more that won't load. I have Windows 7 in Dual-Boot and there are no problems whatsoever in opening these pages on Windows. A little History: 2 weeks back I installed Ubuntu 12.10. I faced this issue right-away on Ubuntu 12.10. I thought something must have went wrong with the installation, so I removed Ubuntu 12.10 and instead installed Lubuntu 12.10 on it. But the same issue persisted on Lubuntu as well. So, I tried opening these webpages in Live Environments (of Ubuntu 12.10, Lubuntu 12.10 and Ubuntu 12.04.1) from USB. The issue was there for Ubuntu 12.10 and Lubuntu 12.10. However, I was able to access these webpages from Ubuntu 12.04.1. So, I installed 12.04.1 on my HardDisk. Everything on 12.04 was fine till yesterday; but suddenly, these sites don't load anymore. All this while, Windows 7 in Dual-Boot works flawlessly. Please help me resolve this issue.

• Can't add Fedora 14 to grub.

  Today I installed Fedora 14 in a different partition in the same hard drive as Ubuntu. At the Fedora 14 installation, I chose not to install Boot-loader in the MBR, and instead chose to install it in the Fedora partition itself, which is according to my HD layout /sda3. After the Fedora 14 installation I booted in to Ubuntu and ran sudo update-grub but 'grub.cfg' fails to add Fedora 14 in to the OS list. Here is the output of boot-info script.   I have a server with 10 ip's that I want to give access to some friends via authentication but I'm stuck on squid's config file. Let's say I have these ip's available on my server: 212.77.23.10 212.77.1.10 68.44.82.112 And I want to allocate each one of them to a different user like so: 212.77.23.10 goes to user manilodisan using password 123456 212.77.1.10 goes to user manilodisan1 using password 123456 68.44.82.112 goes to user manilodisan2 using password 123456 I managed to add the passwords and authentication works ok but how do I do to restrict one user to one of the available ip's?   I have question about strange behavior of my openVPN configuration on Debian lenny. I have 2 server configs (one proto tcp-server based and one proto udp based). ISP bandwidth is 7Mbit/7Mbit. When I uses proto tcp-server my download server rate is fine around 6,4 Mbit/s, but upload rate is about 3Mbit/s. When I uses proto udp, my download server rate is around 3Mbit/s and upload rate around 6,4Mbit/s. I tried to handle the MTU, MSSFIX and cipher on/off on server and client configs to synchronize rates, but without solution. • bind9 "error sending response: host unreachable"

  of course), I have a number of DNS servers, all running bind9 (9.5.1, to be specific) under fedora. 4 of them are slaves, fed by a common master for our public DNS. These are all located on the public gateways of our various offices. One of them has tons of messages in its log files similar to these: Jul 21 17:26:18 gateway named[3487]: client 10.171.3.8#52500: view internal: error sending response: host unreachable I wonder where that comes from. The firewall is open on port 53 between the two machines (10.171.3.8 is an internal DNS server located on a Windows Domain Controller). The internal domains do NOT list the gateway as a name server (so there should not be any attempts of replicating the domains), and the gateway does not handle any internal DNS. The clients in these messages vary between the two domain controllers on the internal network and a third internal name server (running bind9 on debian in a different segment of the network). Any pointers are highly welcome. In response to the first reply: The issue with this really is that tcpdump doesn't show any problems. Here is an extract from "tcpdump -i any port 53" 09:13:38.283308 IP valine.aminocom.com.61815 ns-pri.ripe.net.domain: 14075 PTR? 166.225.58.95.in-addr.arpa. (44) 09:13:42.007410 IP gateway-eng.aminocom.com.37047 alanine.aminocom.com.domain: 35410+ PTR? 12.3.172.10.in-addr.arpa. (42) At the same time, the DNS log shows: Jul 22 09:13:38 gateway named[3487]: client 10.171.3.6#61300: view internal: error sending response: host unreachable Jul 22 09:13:40 gateway named[3487]: client 10.172.3.12#56230: view internal: error sending response: host unreachable Jul 22 09:13:40 gateway named[3487]: client 10.171.3.8#55221: view internal: error sending response: host unreachable Jul 22 09:13:49 gateway named[3487]: client 10.171.3.8#51342: view internal: error sending response: host unreachable So clearly at 09:13:40 there were two unsuccessful attempts to connect to internal machines (10.172.3.12 and 10.171.3.8, both are DNS servers), but nothing in the tcpdump output.

When I have monitor connected to this machine, I can change the resolution of my VNC viewer in the following line: $vnc4server --geometry 1440x900 This worked for me, but I always use this machine remotely, I unplug the monitor and reboot. and the above command line not work anymore. It seems that Ubuntu must conntect to a real monitor before I can change my resolution in my VNC viewer. Can anyone help?   I'm experiencing, what appears to be a hostname resolution issue in ubuntu 12.04 server edition when configuring my computer to use a static ip. In /etc/network/interfaces: # The primary network interface auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.1.28 netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.1.1 Running $ sudo apt-get upgrade, results in a 'Failed to fetch...': . . . W: Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/precise-backports/universe/i18n/Translation-en_US Something wicked happened resolving 'us.archive.ubuntu.com:http' (-5 - No address associated with hostname) W: Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/precise-backports/universe/i18n/Translation-en Something wicked happened resolving 'us.archive.ubuntu.com:http' (-5 - No address associated with hostname) E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead. When I change my /etc/network/interfaces to: auto eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp Everything works fine. Looking into /etc/resolv.conf provides some more hints...In cases where I was getting the resolving issue, resolve.conf was empty. No nameservers were specified. When I changed to dhcp from static and restarted networking. /etc/resolv.conf gets written to: 'nameserver 192.168.1.1'. Switching back from dhcp to static and restarting doesn't remove the nameserve entry. When I restart the system with static set, resolv.conf is empty. When I restart the system with dhcp set, resolv.conf has nameserver 192.168.1.1. So it appears that the issue is that resolve.conf is not getting written to correctly? Which package/code is responsible for writing to resolv.conf? Is there a particular package that I can take a look at open issues?   Gimp launches every time I log into Xubuntu (v. 13.10). Gimp is not shown under Settings Manager- Sessions and startup. It does not appear in ~/.config/autostart.   I use Wubi to install Ubuntu 12.04 on my Windows 7 system. My PC is Acer Aspire S5-391 with a 64-bit operating system. After I finish installing Wubi on Windows I reboot my PC as told by the instruction. Then I got a black screen with the following words shown: [[BGave up waiting for root device. Common Problems: -Boot args (cat/proc/cmdline) -Check rootdelay=(did the system wait long enough?) -check root=(did the system wait for the right device?) -Missing modules(cat/proc/modules; ls/dev) ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/928E20128E1FEE0B does not exist. Dropping to a shell! BusyBox v1.18.5(ubuntu 1:1.18.5-1ubuntu4)built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands. (intramfs) _ I don't know how to deal with this but force my PC to shut down. I can still successfully enter Windows. But everytime I try to enter unbuntu, it shows the above words.......

  I have a cluster farm that I'm setting up. The nodes (computers in the farm) are connected via ethernet & IP over Infiniband. I'm needing to netboot the nodes and thought dnsmasq would fit well as it provides all the features including support for DHCP over IB and it works great for our ethernet setup. However, I can't seem to get it to provide IP addresses to the infiniband adaptors on the nodes. Each node is running an Ubuntu desktop 12.04 LTS. The dnsmasq server is running on ubuntu server 12.04LTS and has the following test config: dhcp-authoritative domain-needed bogus-priv expand-hosts no-hosts domain=local dhcp-range=eth0,10.0.0.10,10.0.0.255,12h dhcp-option=eth0,3,10.0.0.1 dhcp-range=ib0,10.1.1.10,10.1.1.255,12h dhcp-option=ib0,3,10.1.1.1 log-queries log-dhcp IPoIB works between nodes when configured statically but not with dhcp. On the nodes the file /etc/network/interfaces contains auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto ib0 iface ib0 inet dhcp #iface ib0 inet static #address 10.1.1.5 #netmask 255.0.0.0 up echo connected >`find /sys -name mode | grep ib0` Is there something I need to do on the client or server end to make this work?

• Mirror using apt-mirror and exclud certain sections/categories

  I'm currently using apt-mirror to create a local mirror of the debian repositories. As the mirrored repositories will be used only by machines destined to be headless servers and as an effort to reduce the current mirroring size (around 75GB), categories like games and possibly others will never be needed. How can I go about specifying (on the mirror.list perhaps?) what sections/categories I want to be excluded from the mirroring? Maybe a bit subjective, but apart from games what other sections/categories could be "safely" ignored from the mirroring for my environment purposes? • OpenVPN, Server 12.04, connect to machines in home LAN behind VPN server

  Problem: I've set up a working OpenVPN server, and am able to connect to it from anywhere using my mac laptop and tunnelblick. When I connect in, I'm assigned an IP address of 10.8.0.x, the server is 10.8.0.1, so I have no problems SSHing into it. Once SSHd in, I can even ping other machines (obviously) on my home network (192.168.1.x). Desired outcome: What I want, is, to connect to the VPN server, and instead of getting a 10.8.0.x address, I get a 192.168.1.x on my home network. I can't figure out how to talk to the OTHER machines on my home network WITHOUT being SSHd in to the VPN server. I'd like to just connect to my VPN server, then be a part of my home network. Attempted solutions: I've read that I need to set up routes, and/or enable IP forwarding. I enabled IP forwarding using sudo sysctl -w net.ipv4.ip_forward=1 and that doesn't seem to have done anything. I've also uncommented a line in the OpenVPN's server.conf file: # Push routes to the client to allow it # to reach other private subnets behind # the server. Remember that these # private subnets will also need # to know to route the OpenVPN client # address pool (10.8.0.0/255.255.255.0) # back to the OpenVPN server. push "route 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0" ;push "route 192.168.20.0 255.255.255.0" But still no luck, I still get a 10.8.0.x address... • Huawei E3276 LTE uplink slow in the routing Ubuntu, but not with other devices in the LAN

  I have a Huawei E3276 LTE dongle (12d1:14fe - 12d1:1506) and a problem with the upstream speed. The problem is not only present with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (64 bit workstation, kernel 3.16), but also with Raspbian Jessie for Raspberry PI (kernel 3.14). Upstream seems to be always limited to 5 Mbit/s whenever I check the speed from the Linux computer that I use as a LTE router. The other computers in the LAN always get about 10-15 Mbit/s upstream, even though the traffic is routed through the same Linux computer suffering from seemingly capped uplink. Downstream speed is always fine, 25 Mbit/s. I even installed Windows 7 in the same computer as Ubuntu and the speeds are 25 Mbit/s down, 15 Mbit/s up. So the problem is not with E3276 device itself or in the mobile subscription, but in the Huawei E3276 Linux compatibility. Maybe something in the kernel? I have made sure that the matter is not with iptables rules: the speed does not noticeably increase when iptables is disabled. Turning off IPv4 forwarding does not improve speed either. I'm not sure what settings and logs do help in debugging the situation. Please ask for more details, if you have a clue what might be wrong. Thanks, Mytomi

  I have a Logitech Anywhere MX mouse (wireless), when I connect it to the computer it doesn't work. The mouse works in other computers with Windows and with Fedora 17, but it doesn't work in two different computers with Ubuntu 12.04 and 12.10.
