  • Dynamically writing page titles and active classes with php

    For some time now I've been using the following code to dynamically write in html page titles and add an active class to menu items.   • How do we keep Active Directory resilient across multiple sites?

    I handle much of the IT for a company of around 100 people, spread across about five sites worldwide. We're using Active Directory for authentication, mostly served to Linux (CentOS 5) systems via LDAP. We've been suffering through a spate of events where the IP tunnel between the two major sites goes down and the secondary domain controller at one site can't contact the primary domain controller at the other. It seems that the secondary domain controller starts denying user authentication within minutes of losing connectivity to the primary. How do we make the secondary domain controller more resilient to downtime? Is there a way for it to cache the entire directory and/or at least keep enough information locally to survive a multi-hour disconnection? (We're all in a single organizational unit if that makes any difference.) (The servers here are Windows Server 2003; don't assume that we set this up correctly. I'm a software engineer, not an IT specialist.)

  • Why do Java source files go into a directory structure?

    Suppose that I am creating a Java project with the following classes com.bharani.ClassOne com.bharani.ClassTwo com.bharani.helper.HelperOne com.bharani.helper.support.HelperTwo with files put immediately under the folder 'src' src/ClassOne.java src/ClassTwo.java src/HelperOne.java src/HelperTwo.java and compile them using the command $ javac src/*.java -d classes (assuming that classes directory exists) The compiler compiles these files and put the class files in appropriate sub-directories inside the 'classes' directory like this classes/com/bharani/ClassOne.class classes/com/bharani/ClassTwo.class classes/com/bharani/helper/HelperOne.class classes/com/bharani/helper/support/HelperTwo.class Because the spec mandates that the classes should go inside appropriate directory structure. Fine. My question is this: When I use an IDE such as Eclipse or NetBeans, they create the directory structure for the source code directory ('src' directory here) also. Why is that? Is it mandatory? Or, is it just a convention? Thanks.

  • SQL – Quick Start with Explorer Sections of NuoDB – Query NuoDB Database

    This is the third post in the series of the blog posts I am writing about NuoDB. NuoDB is very innovative and easy-to-use product. I can clearly see how one can scale-out NuoDB with so much ease and confidence. In my very first blog post we discussed how we can install NuoDB (link), and in my second post I discussed how we can manage the NuoDB database transaction engines and storage managers with a few clicks (link). Note: You can Download NuoDB from here. In this post, we will learn how we can use the Explorer feature of NuoDB to do various SQL operations. NuoDB has a browser-based Explorer, which is very powerful and has many of the features any IDE would normally have. Let us see how it works in the following step-by-step tutorial. Let us go to the NuoDBNuoDB Console by typing the following URL in your browser: http://localhost:8080/ It will bring you to the QuickStart screen. Make sure that you have created the sample database. If you have not created sample database, click on Create Database and create it successfully. Now go to the NuoDB Explorer by clicking on the main tab, and it will ask you for your domain username and password. Enter the username as a domain and password as a bird. Alternatively you can also enter username as a quickstart and password as a quickstart. Once you enter the password you will be able to see the databases. In our example we have installed the Sample Database hence you will see the Test database in our Database Hierarchy screen. When you click on database it will ask for the database login. Note that Database Login is different from Domain login and you will have to enter your database login over here. In our case the database username is dba and password is goalie. Once you enter a valid username and password it will display your database. Further expand your database and you will notice various objects in your database. Once you explore various objects, select any database and click on Open. When you click on execute, it will display the SQL script to select the data from the table. The autogenerated script displays entire result set from the database. The NuoDB Explorer is very powerful and makes the life of developers very easy. If you click on List SQL Statements it will list all the available SQL statements right away in Query Editor. You can see the popup window in following image. Here is the cool thing for geeks. You can even click on Query Plan and it will display the text based query plan as well. In case of a SELECT, the query plan will be much simpler, however, when we write complex queries it will be very interesting. We can use the query plan tab for performance tuning of the database. Here is another feature, when we click on List Tables in NuoDB Explorer.  It lists all the available tables in the query editor. This is very helpful when we are writing a long complex query. Here is a relatively complex example I have built using Inner Join syntax. Right below I have displayed the Query Plan. The query plan displays all the little details related to the query. Well, we just wrote multi-table query and executed it against the NuoDB database. You can use the NuoDB Admin section and do various analyses of the query and its performance. NuoDB is a distributed database built on a patented emergent architecture with full support for SQL and ACID guarantees.  It allows you to add Transaction Engine processes to a running system to improve the performance of your system.  You can also add a second Storage Engine to your running system for redundancy purposes.  Conversely, you can shut down processes when you don’t need the extra database resources. NuoDB also provides developers and administrators with a single intuitive interface for centrally monitoring deployments.   • Do I have to prepare Active Directory prior to installing an Exchange service pack?

    I'm having trouble determining the proper procedure for installing Exchange 2007 sp3 on a Server 2008 R2 box running Exchange 2007 sp1. It is not clear on websites I have consulted (Microsoft TechNet and others) whether preparing Active Directory is only required on a NEW install of Exchange 2007 sp3, or if it is required when upgrading an existing Exchange 2007 install to sp3. Could someone who has experience with this please set me straight?

Poor asset tracking has left me with a couple of un-locatable machines and I would like to know who used them last.     I am looking to modify the HTML that apache generates for its default directory listing. I already know how to create a HEADER.html file that gets included for every directory listing.   • Accessing files in a directory without x-permission?

    I am having a bit of trouble understanding what the execute permission means for directories. Do I understand it correctly that anything in a directory for which a user does not have x-rights is inaccessible even if the things inside the directory gives specific rights to the user? Or will the user still have direct access to the things in the directory, but simply cannot list what is in the directory? (What I am really trying to understand is how safe a directory is from access from other users if they do not have x-permission for it.)

  • Is it possible, via GPO or other method, to turn Internet Explorer's intranet compatibility mode OFF across a domain?

    Our school's VLE has a few problems when running in IE8/IE9's Compatibility View. Mainly it causes difficulties with uploading files. This problem is easily remedied by un-ticking the Display intranet sites in Compatibility View option from Internet Explorer's Compatibility View options. However, I'm unable to find a way of doing this en masse. I can't find anything regarding this in GPO - would a registry hack or similar do the trick? Thanks in advance,

  • What's a quick and dirty way to get a user list with login time from active directory?

    Im trying to obtain a list of users with their login time (n times if they have logged in more than once) in a particular timespan, for example between 2pm and 3pm on 10/10/2012. I've been fiddling around with powershell, but couldn't get much out of it, downloaded the PowerShell extensions from Quest, tried out some snippets, but I couldn't find something that fits my needs. My guess is to query the events on the Active Directory server but haven't been able to get a snippet that works so far.

    In my Small Business Server 2003 environment, I would like to be able to have users manage their own delegate permissions for their Exchange mailboxes. By default, the Outlook delegate feature will not work unless I go to the user object in Active Directory and grant Allow on "Write Personal Information" to SELF. This will work temporarily, but something seems to reset this value shortly afterword. What would cause this automatic reset?

    I am developing a system that uses a little Internet page as a front-end for the whole program. Since I need to use ActiveX (sigh), the page must work on Internet Explorer. However, after some actions have been done the page needs to close itself. Using window.close() on Javascript it works, but before closing it prompts the user if it wants to close the Window. The ideal would be that it closes automatically. Is there any way to make IE8 (changing an option on the browser, not a code-only solution) not to prompt before closing the Window?

    In my Cocoa app how can I get the current user's domain when they're logged in via Active Directory? I need to determine two things: 1. If the current user is logged on to an Active Directory domain (only need to handle Active Directory). 2. If 1, the domain of the user. I've found references to Directory Services and the Open Directory Programming Guide but the latter is 10.6 only (I must support 10.5+) and I could not find any examples for the former that gave me an idea of what I needed to do.

How do I fix this?
