  • Legal Web Fonts & Licensing

    So I'm a little confused in regards to legality of using fonts for web. Often from designers I get a PSD file and it uses a special font, and the font is supplied. However attempting to convert the font using: http://www.fontsquirrel.com/fontface/generator Ends up with a message saying it's blocked by Adobe. Not only that sometimes if the font can be converted, it often looks like crap when viewed in a browser. I assume that the generator is primarily for people to convert their own fonts, but if you purchase the use of a font then you can only use it for Web if the terms allows you to? The fonts used in PSD's are often Adobe Fonts, I can't find anything that suggests I can convert those and use them on the web. So I'm wondering if anyone knows the legal rights around using Photoshop supplied fonts on the web? In addition I'm wondering what resources are available (free/paid) that provide fonts that can be used on the web.   • PeopleSoft 8.52 iPad Certification

    One of the real gems in the PeopleTools 8.52 release is the certification of PeopleSoft applications running in the Safari Browser on an iPad.  It is nice that PeopleSoft is not constrained by technology like Adobe Flex/Flash, so announcements like this "Adobe drops plans for mobile Flash support" do not limit our mobile solution to custom mobile development. There are parts of PeopleSoft applications that operate better on iPads than others.  One of the best is Workcenters.  Workcenters were new to PeopleTools 8.51 and we are starting to see more and more adoption of them.  Workcenters are roll based landing pages that eliminate difficult navigation by providing access to most links, pages, and reports a user in a role needs.  One of the nicest I’ve seen is the Supply Manager Workspace.  Here are some links to screenshots of what a WorkCenter looks like on an iPad: Here's the standard PeopleSoft Login Page The Supply Manager Workspace looks great full screen on an iPad iPad has a great user interface to zoom, here's a screenshot of an upclose view of an analytic. This works great, except the HTML rendering built into the TextField object leaves a lot to be desired. Could anyone recommend any libraries that would allow me to display HTML elements?   • Embedding binary video data in a swf file

    Is it possible to play video from data that has been embedded in a swf at compile time (with the [Embed] metatag)? The "Import Video-Embed" feature provided by Flash CS3 etc. is not acceptable because it has many severe limitations (including sound synchronization issues, a maximum number of frames, and other caveats) I'm interested in being able to bundle flv video data in a swf (along with other assets), which will be played by an AIR application. I don't think it can be done. Anyone disagree?

    I am using the CSS3 rule, "rotate" to rotate a div containing text. You can see the page here: http://vitaminjdesign.com/v2/socialmedia.html. I am looking for cross browser support for rotating the div; however, this CS3 rule won't work on IE. Is there a jquery option or another javascript solution that will yield the same result, with cross browser compatibility?

  • Cumulative +1/-1 Cointoss crashes on 1000 iterations. Please advise; c++ boost random libraries

    following some former advice Multithreaded application, am I doing it right? I think I have a threadsafe number generator using boost, but my program crashes when I input 1000 iterations. The output .csv file when graphed looks right, but I'm not sure why it's crashing. It's using _beginthread, and everyone is telling me I should use the more (convoluted) _beingthreadex, which I'm not familiar with. If someone could recommend an example, I would greatly appreciate it.   • Refresh SWC in FlexBuilder after publishing

    I am using a SWC that was published from Flash CS3 in an Actionscript project in FlexBuider. The problem is that every time I make a change and re-publish the SWC the changes I made are not immediately recognized back in FlexBuilder. In order to have newly published SWC recognized I have to remove the reference to the SWC from the library path and then add it back again. This is tedious. Is there a better way?

    I have been porting an app from Flex 3.4.x to 4.0.. I have successfully ported the app and its libraries to flex 4.0, I've also removed ALL the references to http://www.adobe.com/2006/flex/mx in any of my mxml files... In short I "think" I have moved everything over to the new mx framework (2009)..   • Determining your websites color scheme

    One of the biggest issues I have, from a UI standpoint, when building a new website is figuring out what colors I will use and of those colors, do they actually work well together. I found this site that has really helped me out and I figured I would share it with all of you and also get some responses back about either sites similar or other ways that you get/figure out your color schemes. Here is the site that I currently use: http://kuler.adobe.com/ With Adobe Kuler, you can chose a base color and it will suggest 5 colors, including your color, that go well with one another. You can, of course, modify the colors it chooses. Also,one of the main features I use, is the image color matching. You can upload an image and it will determine a color scheme based on the colors of the image. So if you have a logo and want to use the colors of the logo, then this works perfectly for you.     I am trying to connect to a socket server from flex. I read, on adobe's documentation, the client automatically sends a "request-policy-file" xml element to the socket before allowing it to be opened, and should receive a policy file. The client sends the xml element as expected, My server receives it (on the port I want to use, port 6104) and replies on the same port with: <?xml version="1.0"?> <!DOCTYPE cross-domain-policy SYSTEM "http://www.adobe.com/xml/dtds/cross-domain-policy.dtd"> <cross-domain-policy> <site-control permitted-cross-domain-policies="all"/> <allow-access-from domain="*" to-ports="*"/> </cross-domain-policy> To the best of my knowledge, this should be the most permissive policy available on a socket. The flash player logs indicate a timeout looking for the socket policy file, although I know my socket returned the response immediately. What should I do ?

  • GhostScript font issues

    I'm running GPL Ghostscript 8.70 (2009-07-31) on Windows XP. I have about 100 PDF files I've attempted to run through GS, but I'm having font-related issues on two separate groups of files from two different customers. I'm not sure if the issues could be related. Here are the two errors I receive: Loading Courier font from C:\Program Files\gs\fonts/cour.ttf... 2343384 986555 13583240 12261829 3 done. Using CourierNewPSMT font for Courier. Error: /rangecheck in --get-- Can't find CID font "Arial". Substituting CID font /Adobe-Identity for /Arial, see doc/Use.htm#CIDFontSubstitution. The substitute CID font "Adobe-Identity" is not provided either. Will exit with error. Error: /undefined in findresource I've tried just about everything I can think of with fontmap and cidfmap. Does anyone out there have a solution?

Clicking the Flash container in Firefox will work Perfectly fine. You should get alert boxes in this order containing: span, div and body. Flash bubbles the event to the HTML. But this is not happening in IE. So why is Flash in IE not bubbling events to HTML? Edit: As mentioned by Andy E this behavior can also bee seen in Google Chrome which to my knowledge is not using ActiveX to embed the flash movie into the page.

    I'm trying to use the Flex 4 SDK's mx.rpc package in a Flash application. I imported Flex's rpc.swc (Adobe\Adobe Flash Builder 4\sdks\4.0.0\frameworks\libs\rpc.swc) into my project by adding it to the list in Flash's "Publish Settings/Flash/ActionScrip 3.0 Settings/Library Path". It seems like I have access to the classes, however when I compile I get this error: 1046: Type was not found or was not a compile-time constant: [mx.rpc]::IResponder. There's no location or line for the error either. Any idea how to get this to work? TIA! Notes: I'm using Flash Builder 4 and Flash CS5

  • How to properly use .SWC packages in Flash CS 4

    Hi! I've googled a lot trying to find how to properly import and use .swc files in Flash CS 4, tried lots of different methods but none seem to work. What I've done is: 1. Placed it in my "D:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Flash CS4\en\Configuration\Components" folder. It does however not show up in the component inspector. 2. Added it in Publishing Settings as a Library and External Library, still can't seem to use it. I've also tried adding "import org.osflash.signals;" after each method but I receive the error "1172: Definition org.osflash:signals could not be found." So what I'm asking for is an easy way to get the .swc package working code-wise with all classes imported etc. The .swc file is as you may have guessed as3signals. Thanks in advance.

    A topic of debate that's seen a resurgence since the unveiling of the iPad is the issue of Flash versus HTML5. There are those that suggest that HTML5 will one day supplant/replace Adobe Flash. I do not develop software that runs in a browser, so my (limited) understanding is: HTML is a pure-text markup language that is delivered over HTTP to a client browser. The client browser interprets the markup and renders (with varying degrees of success) the page according to an standard specification. Adobe Flash is a propriety framework for working with audio, video, sound and raster/vector graphics. It requires special authoring tools (a compiler perhaps?) and a custom player that's available as a plug-in to most common browsers. Could someone please explain (to this C/C++ developer) how it is possible from a technical/coding point-of-view that a text-based markup language (HTML5) could be considered a replacement to a multimedia framework (Flash)? Please no opinionated arguments - just technical facts.
