  • How to Setup Ubuntu Mail Server with Google Apps?

    I have a domain, let's call it foobar.com. All of the MX records for foobar.com point to Google's mail servers because I am using Google Apps for your domain to manage it. It's great because everyone gets all the advantages of GMail, but our e-mail addresses aren't @gmail.com. I also have a server. Primarily, it's a web server, but it also serves other things. One of the things it serves is the web site for foobar.com and also sites for various virtual hosts such as shop.foobar.com and forum.foobar.com. The server is running Ubuntu 8.04, because I like using LTS releases in production. The thing is, there are various applications running on the server that need the ability to send out emails. Various applications, like the cron jobs, send me e-mails in case of errors. Some of the web applications need to send e-mail to users when they forget their passwords, to confirm new registered users, etc. Lastly, it's nice to be able to send e-mail from the command line using the mail command, or mutt. How can I setup the mail on the web server to go through the Google apps mail servers? I don't need the web server to receive mail, though that would be cool. I do need it to be able to send mail as any legitimate address @foobar.com. That way the forum application can send mails with [email protected] in the from field, and the ecommerce application will have [email protected] in the from field. Also, by sending the mail through the Google servers, we can avoid a lot of the problems with the e-mails being blocked by various spam filters on the web. Google's SMTP servers are trusted a lot more than mine would be. I'm pretty good with administering Linux systems, but I am absolutely brain dead when it comes to e-mail. I need step by step directions from beginning to end on how to set this up. I need to know every thing to install, and every single change to the configuration files that is necessary. I have tried following various howtos and guides in the past, but none of them were quite right. Either they didn't work at all, or they offered a configuration that is not what I wanted.     Apple server gurus? I have a Mac OSX Snow Leopard server question. How to be able to view a company's externally hosted website from inside the company? I inherited a company using Mac OSX Snow Leopard server. We moved the website away from MobileMe and into an environment that offers PHP etc. Although the site shows up correctly outside of the company, internally it looks to the MobileMe page and shows an error. I need to change the www record to reflect the change. Where do I do this on OSX Server?

  • Why does Mac OS X Software Update not work when machine uses Active Directory?

    My company's IT department is mostly a Windows run operation and in order to become more secure, they are altering the way that the Macintosh computers login to our internal network so that they use Active Directory like their Windows counterparts. I have been given Administrative permission on my Mac and I am able to do most of what I used to be able to do in terms of authentication of software installations. However, there is a problem: the "Software Update" feature doesn't work. What happens is that when I try to get the Mac to perform its Software Updates from the Apple menu, the normal window appears listing what has to be updated; I am able to select what to update and click the "Update" button, but then nothing happens. It doesn't ask for authentication like it used to, the computer doesn't perform any download or installation (it does sometimes ask me to agree to license agreements for iTunes). I can download the updates individually and install them without any issues, but the auto-update fails. I'd rather use the Software Update menu item like I used to: it is much more convenient. Any suggestions on how I can fix this? EDIT Nov 19th, 2009, 10:09 EST: I have posted this question to the Apple Mac OS X Snow Leopard support forum. EDIT Nov 19th, 2009, 12:39 EST:Yes, the Terminal command "sudo softwareupdate --install --all" does work flawlessly. I want to avoid that as my co-workers are generally not comfortable on the Mac. I also tried Chealion's suggestion to delete "~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist" and "/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist", Software Update still fails. However, I did get diagnostic messages in the Console (below). I've deleted the MS Office Package Receipts and examined the suhelperd (Software Update Helper Daemon?); it appears that suhelperd is crashing and that explains why it doesn't work. I've submitted a bug report to Apple (radar://7408619).   • Apple File Sharing fails to connect

    Running OSX Lion Server (10.7.4), and about once a week or so the Apple File Sharing service stops letting clients connect to its shares. On the client we will see a dialog box stating "There was a problem connecting to the server ". Browsing the server we simply no longer see the shares. The clients are also running the latest OSX (10.7.4) In /var/log/system.log we see entries like the following: Jun 26 08:38:22 w3 AppleFileServer[20511]: received message with invalid client_id 157 Jun 26 08:42:11 w3 AppleFileServer[20511]: received message with invalid client_id 165 Jun 26 08:42:21 w3 AppleFileServer[20511]: received message with invalid client_id 174 Where 20511 appears to be the pid, and client_id appears to be incremented with each failed attempt. Nothing jumps out at me from /Library/Logs/AppleFileService/AppleFileService[Access|Error].log Restarting the service fixes the problem: serveradmin stop afp && serveradmin start afp So I added a script to do this daily using the periodic service. But, we still encounter this problem about once a a week.

  • Configure Apple Mobile Access Server for iPhones, iPads and Macs

    I successfully configured Mobile Access Server on Mac OS X Server 10.6, but now, how do I configure Macs, iPhones and iPads I'm in charge of ? How can these machines access all the services provided by the Mobile Access Server ? I can't find anything useful on the web concerning the client setup. Is there any '1-click configuration' that would setup iCal, Addresses and Mail at once on a machine like the MobileMe setup does ? Or do I have to manually configure each services on each machines ? I gave a look at the iPhone Configuration Utility but it cannot configure Macs, obviously.

    Does anybody know a few details about signed software and /Applications/Utilities/Installer.app? I didn't find more at Wikipedia (https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Installer_%28Mac_OS_X%29) and the UNIX-Manual (man 8 installer). I have here a valid signature from iLife 11 Installer.app (http://i.imgur.com/Y3raY.jpg). Does this mean I can be 100% sure that nothing is modified? It means I can trust this PKG because signed by Apple? Or did I get something wrong?

  • Exchange Transport Service Started but not working

    Good day, Here is the problem : We are hosting a Microsoft Exchange Server. Everything working fine until recently, where the mail transport seems to go wrong. We almost have to restart the service every morning. The thing is that the transport service is started, but the mail are not delivered to the users and senders to our server get a delayed delivery notification. When we restart the service, all the mail is then delivered to the users and we're good to go for a day or two. Things I've noticed : The store service is growing to around 6 Gb of used RAM, and the w3wp.exe service is hanging around 700mb RAM. Is there a way to schedule a restart of the transport role every 4 hours or something while I'm solving the issue so I don't have to worry when I leave for the week-end? And most of all...does anyone have any idea on how to solve this issue? Thanks, Philippe

Actually, I would like to change my smtp.mail name and account that is shown as sending the emails in the header. I changed the "From" but it shows only in the "visible" part of the email and there are values that are different in the header.     Is there any software similar to automator but more advanced? In our situation we have two files with the same name, one is a MOV the other XML. We want to use some of the metadata within the XML to rename both files. Then we want to re-arrange the contents of the XML file so that it is compatible with another piece of software we use (I think this is called mapping) Essentially some software that takes a bunch of variable from existing file and peforms file actions to them. I imagine this would be an easy task using applescript, but im wondering if there is a OSX application similar to Automator that can do the above? Questions are: Is there software that can do the above? Could Automator achieve this? What is the name of this process? If no such software exists, what would be the best kind of script to use? eg. Make an Apple Script, python script etc.

    I'm using Apple System Image Utility (SIU) on Snow Leopard 10.6.2 and I am rather disturbed it takes over Three hours to make a Netrestore or Netboot image. I'm using as the donor machine a brand new iMac and as the imaging machine a brand new iMac connected using target disk mode & Firewire 800. The hard drive size and subsequent image is about 8GB. To restore the image over the network takes about 4 minutes. Given that Norton Ghost will take an image in about 5 minutes (or less on newer machines) over USB2, why is the Mac over an order of magnitude slower?

  • Where did this incorrect cached DNS lookup come from?

    Somehow, I've been having a chronic issue where my computer will get an invalid DNS lookup in its cache for either of the two Exchange servers I use from Mail.app. My workplace runs one of the Exchange servers and I run the other (they are totally unrelated, hosted by different companies, etc.). The problem manifests as a certificate domain error. When it happens, I can run nslookup mail.mydomain.com and I see the incorrect IP address (usually owned by either Apple or Akamai), but if I run nslookup mail.mydomain.com 8.8.8.8, I get the correct address. My real quest is to find out why this keeps happening, and to do that, I'd like to know which server is supplying me this bad DNS entry. Is there a way to check my DNS cache to see where this bad lookup came from?

  • Finding a message in an archive in Kerio MailServer 6

    I need to locate some emails from the archive. Kerio is set to archive emails on a daily basis, keeping the last 2 months. From the mail log, I found entries like: [09/Oct/2012 18:02:20] Recv: Queue-ID: 5074589c-00004ddb, Service: SMTP, From: <info@XXXXXXXXXXXX>, To: <Suzette@xxxxxxxxxxx>, Size: 699, Sender-Host: mail.XXXXXXXXXXX, User: automailer@XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX I need to locate this specific email. The archive folder has a lot of ZIP files like: 2012-Oct-06 2012-Oct-07 2012-Oct-08 2012-Oct-09 ... I assumed this would be in the 2012-Oct-09 zip file. I extracted it, and the zip file contains a lot of emails in the /#msgs/ folder, named: 0000000a.eml 0000000b.eml 0000000c.eml ... I did a search for the last part of the Queue-ID, 00004ddb, but it returned no results. I tried other random searches for other emails in the mail log, but I couldn't find a single one. Any idea how one goes about finding such an email in the archive?

  • Postfix sendmail -f configuration

    I have Postfix installed on two servers. One of them writes e-mail (satellite) and the other one delivers the e-mails (smarthost). When I write e-mail from the satellite server I'm using the sendmail command. My problem is that when e-mail arrives the Return-Path is set to the user@hostname where user is the user that is running sendmail and hostname is the servers hostname. If I use the parameter -f with sendmail I change that, but I'm hoping there is a way to do it in a configuration file for Postfix. Is this possible or should I just deal with having to configure all my software to add the -f argument? Thanks in advanced.

    I have the following: MAC PRO (Model Number: A1186) (PCIe - SLOTS) At present I am using the software RAID however I wish to move to the hardware raid because of the following: Performance (4 x 300gb SATA II in RAID 5) Redundancy (Raid 5, 1 drive can fail and system will be online) I do not wish to use the Apple RAID card (very expensive), I would like to use an aftermarket one which is cheaper. Questions: Does anyone have a WORKING aftermarket RAID card working in their MAC PRO (TOWER)? -(Have done some research, ROCKETRAID, need confirmation) If so to the above, does it work from boot?   • Apple Automator "New PDF from Images" maintaining same filename

    I will potentially have 26k of old legacy PICT images to transfer first to PDF for migration. I am using Apple Automator and also the "Dispense Items Incrementally" to loop through it. However, I can't seem to let "New PDF from Images" to remember the original filename. Anyone able to offer some advice :) FYI, I am transforming it to PDF because I can't do it using ImageMagick to convert directly to my ultimate JPEG format. Due to the fact that my PICT was created very long ago and thus has some convert: improper image header error. See this ticket for more information. Thus I am doing a intermediate convert PICT to PDF first, then convert that PDF to JPEG :) The only thing left is the naming of the "Output File Name" which do not allow me to identify original filename.     I'm attempting to setup vpopmail on my CentOS server (Media Temple). Everything is working like a charm, with the exception that I cannot login to the server from any pop3 client. Upon trying to login I get the following error: Sending of password did not succeed. Mail server mail.(mydomain).com responded: Login failed. I'm running qmail (of course) with xinetd (not tcpserver). I've placed a file called pop3 into the folder /etc/xinetd.d with the content: service pop3 { disable = no socket_type = stream protocol = tcp wait = no user = root server = /var/qmail/bin/qmail-popup server_args = mail.(mydomain).com /home/vpopmail/bin/vchkpw /var/qmail/bin/qmail-pop3d Maildir log_type = FILE /var/log/xinetd.log log_on_success = HOST log_on_failure = HOST RECORD } Can anybody offer any guidance here? I've been unsuccessfully trying to make this happen for over a week.

    I got a simple cloud server and thought it would be nice to have mac native afp Volumes accesss. Installed Netatalk and this seems to work pretty nice. No sensitive data or something but I don't like to wake up someday and have my www docs rm-rfed by some kid h4x0r. Q1: Is afp encrypted? Q2: How can I make it (semi)secure? Q3: Does VPN makes sense for this? Q4: What would you do to get afp working over net? Opening any service meant for Lan only is a basic flaw, i know - but me be ignorant about it. According to Apple Dev only the authentication is encrypted or am I mssing something?

  • Canadian English on Apple products

    Apple is an American company. As many of you probably know, Canadian English is different from American English, and closer to British English (e.g. colour instead of color). I use iWork and Microsoft Office for Mac (along with many other applications on OS X), and OS X, nor my iPhone, have an option to switch to Canadian English. Yes, you can select Canadian English as an input language in the language bar, but any program that uses the central OS X spell checking (from Mail to Office to iWork to Chrome) will check words against an American English dictionary. I know asking a question that involves an iPhone component is borderline off-topic, but I know on my iPhone I can select British English, but that turns my $ into £ and has a few other weird spelling quirks. Simple question: Is it possible to make OS X (and maybe the iPhone) use a Canadian English dictionary for its spell checking? Because British English just doesn't cut it anymore. Thanks!

  • Apple Airport Extreme Wireless Card M8881 Connectivity Issue

    I bought a Apple Airport Extreme Wireless Card M8881 with the antenna for my old Power Mac G5 1.6 Ghz. The computer is running OS X 10.4. The card works and I can connect to my dlink 802.11g wireless router using WPA2/AES encryption. The problem is that the connection has intermittent connectivity issues. When the issue occurs the signal bars for the connection drop to one or two bars and the performance of the connection suffers greatly. The computer isn't far from the wireless router. I have a laptop at the desk where the mac is and it does not have any issues. I'm not sure what it might be? Updated drivers? Firmware? Let me know if I forgot any important information.

  • using gmail to send mails from your php?

    i've read some threads here in SO that someone managed to use gmail's smtp server to send out messages from php script. so if php sends a mail to [email protected] it looks like this: php tells sendmail (smtp server) to send the message sendmail sends the message to gmail's smtp server gmail's smtp server sends the message to hotmail's smtp server so now i wonder, why should one use gmail's smtp server to send a mail? isn't it better just to send the message from sendmail to hotmail's smtp server? correct me if im wrong, but isnt all that requires for a mail to be sent a communication between TWO smtp servers, the senders and the receivers (in this case, hotmail)? and another question, why can't php just send the message directly to hotmail's smtp server, why does it have to go through a local smtp server? and why do you call it a smtp server when sendmail is just acting like a client to send a message and does not receive anything? would be great if someone could shed a light on this topic!

  • Different Servers for incoming mails

    Hi everybody, not sure if what I want is possible so I´d appreciate any pointers. I have full control over the infrastructure (DNS and servers) Currently I receive mails for domain.tld. MX record for domain.tld is gw.domain.tld. gw then does some spam and virus checking and forwards the mails to the internal exchange server. GW is a Proxmox Mail Gateway Box (Free license) Now what I want is to distribute mails for different recipients to other mail servers. Basicly I only want [email protected] and [email protected] to go to the exchange as before, but all others go to a different mail server (based on linux). Any idea how I could achieve this?
