  • How to handle dependency files in a cross-platform manner?

    I'm working on updating an old app. It has some dependency files that live in the same directory as the app. Obviously this broke when Windows Vista came out (since it violates the API and Vista/7 now enforce that (XP didn't)). Ideally, I'd like to avoid hardcoding anything into the app for just Windows. I can live with that if I have to though. I've already been down that path with pulling the APPDATA and LOCALAPPDATA environment variables, but that doesn't help any since they just give you the current user area... I need these to live somewhere accessible for all users, and I'd like to obey the Windows API expectations that they go into the all user appdata area. Suggestions?

  • How to avoid escaping by accident in PERL using system()?

    I want to run some commands using the system() command, I do this way: execute_command_error("trash-put '/home/$filename'"); Where execute_command_error will report if there was an error with whatever system command it ran. I know I could just unlink the file using Perl commands, but I want to delete stuff using trash-put as it's a type of recycling program. My problem is that $filename will sometimes have apostrophes, quotes, and other weird characters in it that mess up the system command or Perl itself.

  • Are vector assignments copied by value or by reference in Google's Go language?

    In the following code, I create one peg puzzle then do a move on it which adds a move to its movesAlreadyDone vector. Then I create another peg puzzle then do a move on it which adds a move to its movesAlreadyDone vector. When I print out the values in that vector for the second one, it has the move in it from the first one along with the move from the second one. Can anyone tell me why it seems to be assigning by reference and not value?     Looking to find the appropriate regular expression for the following conditions: I need to clean certain tags within free flowing text. For example, within the text I have two important tags: <2004:04:12 and . Unfortunately some of tags have missing "<" or "" delimiter. For example, some are as follows: 1) <2004:04:12 , I need this to be <2004:04:12> 2) 2004:04:12>, I need this to be <2004:04:12> 3) <John Doe , I need this to be <John Doe> I attempted to use the following for situation 1: String regex = "<\\d{4}-\\d{2}-\\d{2}\\w*{2}[^>]"; String output = content.replaceAll(regex,"$0>"); This did find all instances of "<2004:04:12" and the result was "<2004:04:12 ". However, I need to eliminate the space prior to the ending tag. Not sure this is the best way. Any suggestions. Thanks

  • Excel Worksheet assignment in VB.Net doesn't compile

    I'm converting a VB6 application into VB.Net and having trouble with the basics. I start off with:- Dim xl As Excel.Application Dim xlsheet As Excel.Worksheet Dim xlwbook As Excel.Workbook xl = New Excel.Application xlwbook = xl.Workbooks.Open(my_data.file_name) xlsheet = xlwbook.Sheets(1) but the last line doesn't compile; it reports Option Strict On disallows implicit conversion from 'Object' to 'Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.Worksheet' I can make this go away by replacing the line with xlsheet = CType(xlwbook.Sheets(1), Excel.Worksheet) but that does't look like the right thing to do to me. If the assignment is correct, I would have thought the object should naturally have the correct type. So: does anyone know what the correct thing I should be doing here?

  • Can you use MongoDB map/reduce to migrate data?

    I have a large collection where I want to modify all the documents by populating a field. A simple example might be caching the comment count on each post: class Post field :comment_count, type: Integer has_many :comments end class Comment belongs_to :post end I can run it in serial with something like: Post.all.each do |p| p.udpate_attribute :comment_count, p.comments.count end But it's taking 24 hours to run (large collection). I was wondering if mongo's map/reduce could be used for this? But I haven't seen a great example yet. I imagine you would map off the comments collection and then store the reduced results in the posts collection. Am I on the right track?

    Is there a way to guarantee that your system tray icon is removed? To add the system tray icon you do: Shell_NotifyIcon(NIM_ADD, &m_tnd); To remove the system tray icon you do: Shell_NotifyIcon(NIM_DELETE, &m_tnd); What I want to know: what if you application crashes? The icon stays in your system tray until you mouse over. Is there a way to guarantee that the icon will be removed, even when the application crashes? I would prefer not to use structured exception handling for various reasons. Another case that I want to handle is when the process is killed, but doesn't necessarily crash.

    Hi there. I have a simple addView problem that is driving me nuts, I know I am overlooking something simple, perhaps another set of eyes can help. I have a Nib with a view that has a class identity set to TestView In my view controller, I use the following code: CGRect myRect = CGRectMake(0, 0, 320,240); TestView *myTest = [[TestView alloc] initWithFrame:myRect]; [self.view addSubview:myTest]; I have a NSLog in the TestView class's initWithFrame that fires when the above code is executed, but the view doesn't appear in the view controllers view.     Hi, I'm looking for a way to display a message to the user if he leaves my site after only viewing one page. I found this (http://www.pgrs.net/2008/1/30/popup-when-leaving-website) clever solution, but it has a few flaws: staying_in_site = false; Event.observe(document.body, 'click', function(event) { if (Event.element(event).tagName == 'A') { staying_in_site = true; } }); window.onunload = popup; function popup() { if(staying_in_site) { return; } alert('I see you are leaving the site'); } It displays the message also when refreshing the page or using the back button. Do you know a better solution or how to fix it in the above code? I'm no javascript master :) My intention is to add the code on very specific landing pages only, and display the message when people leave the page without downloading my trial software or reading other pages on my site.

My issue is that within th text I have malformed sequences: If the text doesn't start with a date, and end with a name my extraction fails. For example, the text above may have several mal formed sequences, such as: abcabcabcabc<2007-01-12><name1> Should be: <2007-01-12>abcabcabcabc<name1> Is it possible to have a regular expression that would clean the above, prior to extracting my consistent pattern. In short, i need to find all mal formed patterns, and then take the date tag and put it in front of it, as provided in the example above. Thanks.

I successfully got it to run multiple last names by the author, but now, I need to find all books by author, which means searching the collection for all books that match the specified author and I also need to find all books by publisher, which displays a list of books by the specified publisher. How would I implement this? Would I use string or vector? Any help will be much appreciated!

  • Large Table in iFrame crashes IE8

    I have a page with an iFrame whose source is an ashx page. The handler takes in 3 arguments through the query string and generates a text/html response containing a table. When the table gets 1700 rows it crashes the IE8 browser. The browser freezes and returns a null reference error. If I take the html that is being rendered and place it inside a DIV on the page it renders fine in IE8. Any suggestions?

    When naming a boolean, or a function returning a boolean it's usual to prefix with 'is' e.g. isPointerNull isShapeSquare What about when refering to multiple items, should it be: arePointersNull or isPointersNull areShapesNull or isShapesNull I can see arguments for both; is offers consistency and perhaps slightly better readability, are makes the code read in a more natural way. Any opinions?

Have I not written the dynamic key generator correctly?

    I'm working on Ruby on rails 2.3.4 and I'm trying to develop a Sort feature on my website's search page(its url is /anuncios/buscar). What I tried is to create a "map" on routes file: map.search_filter_relevance "/anuncios/buscar", :controller => 'announcements', :action => 'search_filter_relevance' Then, I wrote this on the view: <%= link_to 'M&Aacute;S RELEVANTES', search_filter_relevance(@announcements) %> And finally, I created a method in the controller, as is specified on the routes' line: def search_filer_relevance raise params.inspect end First of all, as I'm sorting search results, I'd like to keep them in their public variable called @announcements. Please help me do this. An the other thing is that when I click the link I get an error due its trying to access the Show action instead of search_filter_relevance as specified in routes. Why is this happening?

  • iphone dev - loading table content asynchronously

    My app has a navigation controller which push and pop a series of views. One of the tableViews loads .xml file from URL and it takes 4-5 seconds. If I click the back button on the navigation bar, it will only respond after the content of the table finish loading. Is there an easy way to load the content asynchronously so that the app will still respond to my gesture on the navigation bar? p.s. I search this on the Internet and people are talking about multithreading. I don't know a lot about threads so please be more specific. Thanks in advanced =)
