  When I try to install libapache2-mod-php5, I get an error: Some packages could not be installed.   You know how in Minecraft, the World is ever-expanding and all the biomes are randomized? My generalized question is: In relation to a space simulation that is also ever-expanding as the player moves about the world, how would one go about programming this randomization in Java? My real question is: Could I get a simplified example broken down into these example classes: astroids (This would include how many astroids there are, their positioning in space, their size, how often the larger astroids occur, how close they are to each other, the limitations of how many of the large asteroids can be in one field, how often astroid fields are generated, etc.) star-types (size, color, type, how often they occur, where hey occur, etc.) inhabitable-planets (size, positioning, how often they're generated, where they are generated, etc.) This would be very helpful currently since I wish to make a simplified version of such a program.

  We have a website that has two URLs (one for the US side and another for the Canadian side which is then broken into Canadian English and Canadian French). For the purposes of my question, I will write as: www.us_url.com (US) www.canada_url.ca/ca_en/ (Canadian English) www.canada_url.ca/ca_fr/ (Canadian French) To make sure people are on the correct site, what do I do if they go to the US URL with Canadian English content (e.g. www.us_url.com/ca_en/canada.asp) but I want to make sure the URL is the Canadian one (e.g. www.canada_url.ca/ca_en/canada.asp) so it shows up properly in Google Analytics. We're using IIS 7 and classic ASP.

• Turn a Kindle into a Weather Display Station

  The e-ink display, network connectivity, and low-power consumption of Kindle ebook readers make them a perfect candidate for an infrequently refreshed high-visibility display–like a weather display. Read on to see how to hack a Kindle to serve up the local weather. Tinker and hardware hacker Matt Petroff hacked his Kindle to accept input from a web server and then, graciously and in the spirit of geeky projects everywhere, shared his source code. He explains the heart of the project: The server side of the system uses shell and Python scripts to convert weather forecast data into an image for the Kindle. The scripts first download and parse forecast data from NOAA via the National Digital Forecast Database XML/SOAP Service. After parsing the data, the data then needs to be converted into an image. This is accomplished by preprocessing a specially crafted SVG file to insert temperatures, forecast symbols, and days of the week. This SVG is then rendered as a PNG using rsvg-convert and converted to a grayscale, no transparency color space as required by the Kindle using pngcrush. Finally, it is copied to a public location on the web server. The Kindle is set to refresh twice a day (you could easily tweak the scripts for a more frequent refresh) and displays the forecast as seen in the photo above–with crisp and easy to read text and icons.   I moved from Archlinux to Kubuntu 12.04 yesterday. I compiled buildroot 2012.08 on Archlinux without any problem. Though on Kubuntu libcrypt seems to be broken. sysvinit can't find it anywhere. glibc-dev and all dependencies are installed. How do I link to libcrypt? • Can't install ATI proprietary drivers in 12.10

  I have a laptop with ATI Radeon 6770M HD Hybrid graphics card. In Ubuntu 12.04, I installed the fglrx driver through "additional drivers" and it worked. (I can even switch GPUs). But in the new Ubuntu 12.10, after installing, Unity won't load. Only the mouse and the wallpaper. If I initialize the settings sudo aticonfig --initial then after rebooting it gives a warning saying I'm in low graphics mode! How to fix this? PS : Earlier i used software source to install the drivers. But when using the terminal, I got this warning : update-alternatives: warning: forcing reinstallation of alternative /usr/lib/fglrx/ld.so.conf because link group x86_64-linux-gnu_gl_conf is broken Update : Filed a bug report in launchpad : https://bugs.launchpad.net/fglrx/+bug/1068661

  Microsoft has moved away from the COM stack, VB6 is so last century and .Net rules the (MS) roost. Yet I find myself still banging out reams of VBA code - for a new project automating Excel seeing as you ask. I've tried to doing the same kind of thing using VSTO and it was just too damn buggy/hard/inefficient with a broken development model. I can't get rid of the feeling that I'm missing something, OTOH I really can't see a better way of solving this problem. What are your thoughts?

  I've come across SQL injection vulnerabilities on my companies ecommerce page. It was fairly poorly put together. I believe I have prevented future attempts however we are getting calls about fraudulent credit card charges on our site and others. This leads me to believe that someone was able to get a list of our credit card numbers. What doesn't make sense is that we don't store that information and we use Authorize.net for the transaction. If someone was able to get the CC#s, what should I do next? Inform ALL of our customers that someone broken into our system and stole their information? I have a feeling that will be bad for business.

• Wordpress does not create directories?

  First I will just tell you how my wordpress hierarchy looks like: /var/www has all of the wordpress files, which is different from how it is normally set up as /var/www/wordpress (symlinked to /usr/share/wordpress). So var/www contains all of the files that /usr/share/wordpress would have, and /usr/share/wordpress is symlinked to /var/www, with an extra /var/www/wordpress symlinked to /var/www to prevent possible compatibility issues. When uploading a file like a favicon or a .zip-ped theme, everything works fine, and when checking if the theme/favicon is uploaded, wordpress shows that it is, and points to a directory that it thinks that it had created, like http:/localhost/wp-content/uploads/2012/..., which it had not, because the uploads folder is empty! And so there is a broken link on the internet and the theme is displayed but it has just plain text (because it had reverted to a plain theme I think) Please help! I am sorry for such a long post but this is really quite a troublesome problem. I have chowned /var/www and /usr/share/wordpress to www-data.

  Hopefully a relativity simple question. I'm starting work on a new internal project to create tractability of repaired devices within the buildings. The database is stored remotely on a webserver, and will be accessed via web API (JSON output) and protected with OAuth. The front end GUI is being done in WPF, and the business code in C#. From this, I see the different layers Presentation/Application/Datastore. There will be code for managing all the authenticated calls to the API, class to represent entities (business objects), classes to construct the entities (business objects), parts for WPF GUI, parts of the WPF viewmodels, and so on. Is it best to create this in a single project, or split them into individual projects? In my heart I say it should be multiple projects. I have done it both ways previously, and found testing to be easier with a single project solution, however with multiple projects then recursive dependencies can crop up. Especially when classes have interfaces to make it easier to test, I've found things can become awkward.

  Whenever I'm plugging in my external monitor into my notebook and changing the screen resolution to the maximum state, the desktop will get broken in a way: A third of the whole desktop space is not visible at all. I can see the whole panel as well as the Unity side bar to the left, but the desktop space with all the windows in it is not completely visible. It's blanked out. In case of opening the Unity menu bar, I can type something in it. As soon as close the menu bar, the upper part stays visible and hangs: Any ideas about that issue?

• Ubuntu frozen on boot screen; boot repair fails due to X11 and gtk

  I have a year-old HP Pavilion dv6 with Intel i7 processors and graphics card. I had Windows 7 but last week I dual booted Ubuntu. It was working fine until today. I did the following things: Updated Gnome and installed Gnome tweak tool Uninstalled Chromium browser Uninstalled Google Chrome Moved jdk and jre folders from ~/ to /bin using sudo Moved Adobe folder from ~/ to /bin using sudo Then I restarted. Ubuntu froze for half an hour on the purple boot screen. Something I did must have broken it. So, I hit Ctrl + Alt + F1 and managed to log in through the command line. From there, I ran sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade. I also updated grub. I also installed boot-repair. However, I cannot run boot-repair, because I keep getting the following errors: Autolaunch error: X11 initialization failed RuntimeError: Gtk couldn't be initialized.

• Is there a way to force lubuntu screen resolution?

  I have a Dell Inspiron 4000, 900 Mhz Pentium III, 192 MB RAM,10.1 GB disk running Lubuntu 12.04. When I start the computer, and I check the display resolution, Monitor Settings claims that the max resolution is 1024x768. I then connected another monitor I had lying around, rebooted, and now the laptop monitor looks normal,and monitor settings claims that 1280x1024 is the max resolution (it is) and the other monitor doesn't turn on. (black screen) The external monitor is not broken. Is there a way to, without the external monitor, force the laptop monitor resolution to 1280x1024? (The following is another question) - How can you run commands automatically at startup? Specifically "xinput 18 118 0" (without quotes) The first question is important, I can live with typing the second one at every boot. Thanks

• Quantal upgrade broke my gnome-shell!

  Just updated to quantal 12.10, and Unity works fine, but and I can't get gnome-shell to work :( Some symptoms: when using gdm as the default, it decided to display everything in chinese. When attempting to log in, it accepts the password, and then seems to crash when trying to load my desktop, and seems to restart gdm and send me back to the login screen when switching to lightdm as the window manager, it gets a little further (and in english), bringing up a desktop, but a broken one -- the propeller key doesn't bring up a menu, there's no menubar or notifactions area. i can do a few things, like bring up a terminal with ctrl+alt+t, and launch eg firefox from there, but not much else. I have tried uninstalling gnome-shell, deleting /etc/gdm, and reinstalling Any other suggestions? Which log files to look at for example?

• How can I tell what error grub has when I can't read what it's saying?

  Grub won't allow me to get into any systems on my HP dv7 (it runs 12.10). As the screen is broken, I can't read what the error is. Nothing works, not even the recovery mode. It gives me some error about "cannot find" (I think) and Press any (I guess key?) When a press a key I'm dropped back to the menu. At the moment I'm trying all the recovery options I know. However, it would be great if someone could tell me how to know what error grub is facing from a live cd or something (maybe a log file or something could help)? NB: I can view the filesystem from a liveCD, and I did check the filesystem - it was clean.

• What am I risking if I don't update my SDK/JDK and bundled runtime/JRE every time there's a security update?

  It seems like there's a new major security hole patched in Java every other week, and I would assume the same goes for other development platforms. After years of frustration trying to get customers to install and configure a compatible JRE on their systems, we started bundling one with our software. (By bundling, I mean we extract a copy of the JRE in our installation directory--we don't install the JRE and configure it as the system default.) The problem is, it's a hassle having to keep that JRE up-to-date because first we have to retest everything to make sure the update didn't break anything (it has broken some of our third-party dependencies in the past). How seriously, if at all, are we putting our customers at risk if we don't update our SDK/JDK and the runtime/JRE that we bundle with our product every time there's a security update? Is it reasonable to just update on a periodic schedule--say, once every 6 months or so?

• Gnome/X logs off immediately after login -- which logfiles are relevant?

  I've been tinkering with fingerprint-gui as well as X/xrandr resolution settings. When I start my machine, it boots up normally. As soon as X and gnome have finished starting, it logs me off automatically and brings me back to the gdm login prompt with the user list. Then I am, however, able to log in using "Ubuntu Desktop Fail-safe". I've checked the list of start-up applications, but everything seems fine there. I can't yet put my finger on what exactly might be responsible for this: X, gnome or some messed up pam.d settings. So far I've checked /var/logs/X11/xorg.0.log, /var/logs/auth.log and ~/.xsession-errors. In addition, I don't quite seem to understand the "interplay" between X, GDM, GNOME, GNOME-policykit, PAM.d and all that. Are there any other relevant log files that could point me to what's broken? • I Can't install Skype on Ubuntu 12.04 x64. Can someone help me?

  I'm having a trouble when trying to install Skype on my Ubuntu 12.04.1 x64. My notebook have compatible hardware with Ubuntu. My previous OS installed on this machine was the Ubuntu 12.04 x64 and Skype was working great, but I got a formatation and I installed the New ubuntu 12.04.1. When I try to install by the Ubuntu software Center, or by the sudo apt-get install skype, I get this error message (in Portuguese) : "Os pacotes a seguir têm dependências desencontradas: skype: Depend: skype-bin E: impossivel corrigir problemas, você manteve (hold) pacotes quebrados." Something like i have the skype-bin package missing (or broken). I can't find it on Software center. I tried to install it by downloading a deb package with the skype-bin package but it ask for a lot another packages! I tried install the .deb package from the official Skype site, but I got the same error! Any Help? Sorry about my bad English, I'm Brazilian
