  • apcupsd on Linux does not report on APC BackUPS Pro 900

    From what documentation I could find, the UPS should be (is!) supported by Linux and ought to work with apcupsd. I looked for specific problems such as the infamous Microlink protocol, and found none. I have found a feedback from a guy in UK that reports using this very model on a not-too-different OS version (his OpenSuSE 12.1, mine 12.3 x86_64). This confirms that it's not the Microlink problem, or it would report the battery status, if precious little else. If I disconnect the USB cable, I get an apcupsd message to the effect that communications have been lost; and I get the "communication restored" broadcast too, if I reconnect the cable. apcupsd is monitoring. So everything tells me that it should work -- only it doesn't. Does anyone spot what I'm missing?

  • Unable to log into Windows XP Pro Domain Not Available

    Trying to access an old laptop I have but at the windows login screen I attempt to log in and get the message "Unable to log in because is unavailable". This laptop is not on a domain or a network and I do not know the computer name. I have blanked the passwords of the local administrator and user account using Offline NT Password and Registry Editor but still unable to log in? Any advice would be grateful or if you can point me to the registry location I can edit or delete to remove the domain. Thanks

  • Hyper-V causes boot loop/failure on a non-Gigabyte Win8 Pro system

    Hardware: Intel i7 2600K (not overclocked, SLAT compatible, virt. features enabled in bios) Asus Maximus IV Extreme-Z (Z68) 16Gb RAM 256Gb SSD Other non-trivial working parts Adding Hyper-V is causing a boot loop resulting in an attempt at automatic repair by Windows 8 after the second or third loop: I'm trying to get the Windows Phone 8 SDK installed and I've narrowed down my troubles to the Hyper-V feature in Win8. This is required to run the WP8 emulator and there are no install options to omit this feature. My first attempt completely borked the OS as I did not have a recent restore point or system image, so I did a completely clean install and made plenty of backups/restore points. I skipped the SDK install and went straight for the windows feature add-on for Hyper-V. This confirmed that Hyper-V is the issue as the same behavior resulted. I cannot find any hint in the Event Logs. Cancelling automatic recovery causes the same behavior to repeat. I don't have any other VM products installed. My only recourse is to use a restore point, try something else, install it again, and see what happens. No luck so far. I'm on my 10th attempt here. Any help would be much appreciated. I've tried setting 'CPUID Limit' to disabled. This seems to work partly as Win8 boots but no USB devices work at all. I also attempted disabling the usb 3.0 controller as the msdn topic lists an issue with USB controllers on Gigabyte boards. This also doesn't work. The USB devices light up but no input is received by the OS. All of my other bios CPU settings are in line with the info in the post. I'm totally stumped.     I would like to use Linux(Fedora) on a Aluminum MacBook Pro, but since the Touchpad on a MacBook Pro is only a giant button Apple does some custom tracking. When there is one finger placed, and a second follows (the click can occur before or after that) it will be interpreted as a drag. So the strong thumb can be used to hold pressure and the more accurate index finger can do the pointing. But Linux interprets this as a right click, since it only cares if two fingers are on the pad. When i type mysql in the command line i get this bash: /opt/local/bin/mysql5: No such file or directory How is it still recognizing where it thinks mysql should be? I'm trying to build it myself in /usr/local, and when i do install it there, i still get that error message for it looking for it in opt/local.

  • Isopropyl okay to use on MacBook screen?

    I've always used a mixture of isopropyl alcohol and distilled water to clean my computer screens (50% water and 50% * 70% isopropyl). From what I understand, these are exactly the same ingredients used in most commercial screen cleaners, perhaps even more diluted. I recently used this solution to wipe off my 2010 MacBook Pro screen, and there don't seem to be any problems, but this support page explicitly says not to use isopropyl. Now I'm worried that I might have inadvertently damaged something. I'm also concerned because I once managed to dissolve the surface rubber lining of one of my mice with the isopropyl solution, and the MacBook Pro display has a thin rubber bezel keeping the glass in place. Why would Apple single out isopropyl on their support page? Should I be concerned?

    I have latest generation Macbook Pro 7.1 (Intel Core 2 Duo) running Mac OS X 10.6.6. I installed Virtuabox 4.0.2 and tried to boot Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit iso. The boot options screen from the live CD came up: However when I continued to load the live session, or installer for that matter, I encountered the following error: This kernel requires an x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i686 CPU. Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU. I am not sure if VT-x is enabled or is supported in the Core 2 Duo of my Macbook Pro. But at least, I have both I/O APIC and VT-x enabled for hardware virtualization as told in the Virtualbox manual.

  • Administrative shares in Windows 7 Pro not visible

    My desktop machine has a clean install of Windows 7 Professional. For some reason the standard administrative shares Admin$, C$, D$, etc are not visible, either in Computer Management - Shared Folders - Shares or via net share. I also have a laptop with a clean install of Windows 7 Professional, and I can see the admin shares in both places. As such, I can map to \\laptop\c$ from the desktop, but I can't map to \\desktop\c$ from the laptop. I pretty much took the defaults during the Windows 7 installations. I've tried adding LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy to the registry on the desktop, but that didn't work. On the desktop I've also disabled UAC, turned off Windows firewall, removed it from a homegroup, made sure file and printer sharing is turned on, but nothing has worked. There is some subtle difference between the two machines that I can't seem to find. I'm logging into both machines using a local account that is in the Administrators group. Both accounts have the same name and password. I really don't want to have to create a new share for the desktop's C drive, especially since C$ is visible and working on the laptop and therefore I should be able to make it work on the desktop. Any idea why the admin shares would work on one machine and not another? Or why LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy would fail?

  • How do I tell if my firewire connection is running as 400 or 800?

    I have a MacBook Pro with FireWire 800 and a freecom external harddrive that has USB3, FireWire 400 and 800. I am using a Nikkai FireWire 800 cable that has 800 connector on one end and a 400 connector on the other end. The 800 connector is attached to the MacBook pro and the 400 connector is attached to the freecom drive. Is there any way to tell what connection has been established? I looked at disk utility and it simply said 'FireWire'. Is there a command-line tool that would give more information? If it's 400, I plan to swap the cable for 800 connector at both ends.

Activity monitor gives me a mysqld process running by me, and everytime i KILL the process both via Activity Monitor and via kill =9 pid it starts right back up.. Sampling the process points back to the MAMP mysqld.. wtf?! About to throw MAMP out the window and boot up a VM of CentOS =)

    I installed NTFS 3G but now get the following error message when I try to plug in my external drive. I also get it on startup about my Windows partition. Uninstall/ reinstall does not work. NTFS-3G could not mount /dev/disk1s1at /volumes/freeagent GoFlex Drive because the following error occured: /library/filesystems/fuse.fs/support/fusefs.kext failed to load- (libkern/kext) link error; check the system/ kernel logs for errors or try kextutil(8). The MacFUSE file system is not available (71) Any help would be great. I'd hope to avoid reinstalling OS X if possible!

  • MacBook Pro (2007 - ATI-Card) Screen goes half black then shuts down the entire computer

    Hey, when I'm starting my MBP I get about 10-60 seconds of the booting process before the screen goes half black (Its like applying a black to transparent gradient from the left side of the screen to the middle of the screen). After a 5 seconds the entire screen blacks out and the MBP shuts down. There have been issues with heat and some minor artifacts on the screen in the past but nothing serious as far as I know. Everything could be resolved by rebooting or letting the MBP cool down a bit. I would like to identify the problem now. There are 3 possibilities I can think of right now: My graphics card is defect and shuts down after a few seconds. (But if thats true, I find it kind of hard to explain the HALF black screen) My LCD-Panel is defect and sends back wrong signals so the system shuts down??? (I not sure about that) My fan or/and thermal sensors are defect and forcing the graphics card to shut down. Can anyone point if I'm right or if there yet another reason for this. I'd be thankful for any hint or tips. Cheers, Per

  • Windows 8 to 8.1 Pro Upgrade SecureBoot Error

    I upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. I have an Alienware Aurora R4 with the latest BIOS firmware version, A09. Ever since I did the upgrade, I get a watermark on my desktop saying, "SecureBoot isn't configured correctly"...I would like to get rid of this watermark the correct way (not by hacking system DLLs). My BIOS shows me booting in UEFI mode, and I see that SecureBoot is actually disabled from there. I cannot enable SecureBoot, in either UEFI mode or Legacy Boot mode. Note, I can't even get Legacy Boot mode working without re-formatting my system which I really don't plan on doing, so my question is this...what has changed in the way Windows handles SecureBoot? As far as I can tell, I do not have SecureBoot enabled, and it is trying to tell me that it isn't configured correctly. Why does it even care to check if my BIOS doesn't have it on anyways?! Its so frustrating!

    I am having problem with a user account on a Windows 7 machine (local install, admin user account) APPPATH and LOCALAPPPATH environment are not set. Another user on the same machine, (also a local account, but without admin rights) has the variables set. This started to happen recently, however, I can not figure out if there was something installed on the machine to cause this. This is creating issues with applications that are trying to expand the variables to store local files. Thank you for the help.
