  • Is there a way to bring an application's GUI to the current desktop?

    Background: Started a fair amount of work before realizing that a Windows Service cannot start an app with a GUI that displays without potential problems. The proper solution of separating the GUI of the app to be started is non-trivial, so I'm trying to think of alternative solutions. There is a GUI to manage the service that is a separate executable, but the process to be launched (actually multiple instances of it) has its own GUI that needs to be shown. It doesn't need to be made visible by the service itself, but it needs to be at least able to be made visible by another process with a visible GUI. The Windows User that is running the service and that needs to see the GUI of the launched process is the same and known at install time. Is there some way to accomplish this or is it back to the drawing board? Also both the service and the app to launch are both our code and modifiable.

  • Can I Import an updated structure into a MySQL table without losing its current content?

    We use MySQL tables to which we add new fields from time to time as our product evolves. I'm looking for a way to export the structure of the table from one copy of the db, to another, without erasing the contents of the table I'm importing to. For example say I have copies A and B of a table, and I add fields X,Y,Z to table A. Is there a way to copy the changed structure (fields X,Y,Z) to table B while keeping its content intact? I tried to use mysqldump, but it seems I can only copy the whole table with its content, overriding the old one, or I can use the "-d" flag to avoid copying data (dumping structure only), but this will create an empty table when imported, again overriding old data. Is there any way to do what I need with mysqldump, or some other tool?

  • The Current State Of Serving a PHP 5.x App on the Apache, LightTPD & Nginx Web Servers?

    Being stuck in a MS stack architecture/development position for the last year and a half has prevented me from staying on top of the world of open source stack based web servers recent evolution more than I would have liked to. However I am now building an open source stack based application/system architecture and sadly I do not have the time to give each of the above mentioned web servers a thorough test of my own to decide. So I figured I'd get input from the best development community site and more specifically the people who make it so. This is a site that is a resource for information regarding a specific domain and target audience with features to help users not only find the information but to also interact with one another in various ways for various reasons. I chose the open source stack for the wealth of resources it has along with much better offers than the MS stack (i.e. WordPress vs BlogEngine.NET). I feel Java is more in the middle of these stacks in this regard although I am not ruling out the possibility of using it in certain areas unrelated to the actual web app itself such as background processes. I have already come to the conclusion of using PHP (using CodeIgniter framework & APC), MySQL (InnoDB) and Memcached on CentOS. I am definitely serving static content on Nginx. However the 3 servers mentioned have no consensus on which is best for dynamic content in regards to performance. It seems LightTPD still has the leak issue which rules it out if it does, Nginx seems it is still not mature enough for this aspect and of course Apache tries to be everything for everybody. I am still going to compile the one chosen with as many performance tweaks as possible such as static linking and the likes. I believe I can get Apache to match the other 2 in regards to serving dynamic content through this process and not having it serve anything static. However during my research it seems the others are still worth considering. So with all things considered I would love to hear what everyone here has to say on the matter. Thanks!

  • Why does this script work in the current directory but fail when placed in the path?

    I wish to replace my failing memory with a very small shell script. #!/bin/sh if ! [ –a $1.sav ]; then mv $1 $1.sav cp $1.sav $1 fi nano $1 is intended to save the original version of a script. If the original has been preserved before, it skips the move-and-copy-back (and I use move-and-copy-back to preserve the original timestamp). This works as intended if, after I make it executable with chmod I launch it from within the directory where I am editing, e.g. with ./safe.sh filename However, when I move it into /usr/bin and then I try to run it in a different directory (without the leading ./) it fails with: *-bash: /usr/bin/safe.sh: /bin/sh: bad interpreter: Text file busy* My question is, when I move this script into the path (verified by echo $PATH) why does it then fail? D'oh? Inquiring minds want to know how to make this work.

    I am trying to manage an IIS7 installation remotely using the Microsoft.Web.Administration library. I'm doing this in IronPython: import Microsoft.Web.Administration from Microsoft.Web.Administration import ServerManager manager = ServerManager.OpenRemote("RemoteServerName") for site in manager.Sites: print "Site: %(site)s" % { 'site' : site.Name } On the last line as it attempts to communicate with the remote server I get the following error: Retrieving the COM class factory for remote component with CLSID {2B72133B-3F5B-4602-8952-803546CE3344} from machine devdealernetsvr failed due to the following error: 80070005. My research into the error lead me to believe that I do not have the proper credentials against the remote machine and so I would like to impersonate a user that does. I was hard pressed to find a way to do this with IronPython. Any help is much appreciated.

    For instance, I suppose I have a directory that contains the following folders foo_bar baz What I would like to have is a bash command that will make a symlink foo-bar to foo_bar so it would look like this: foo-bar foo_bar baz I'm pretty sure I can write a Python script to do this, but I'm curious if there's a way to do this with bash. Here's where I'm stuck: ls -1 | grep _ | xargs -I {} ln -s {} `{} | sed 's/_/-/'` What I'm trying to do is run the command ln -s with the first argument being the directory name and the second argument being that name passed through sed s/_/-/. Is there another way to do this?

  • Jython & Mysql - what is the current practice for connection?

  • Drupal menu with submenus only shows submenu of current page. NOT a CSS problem

    This is not a CSS problem. The HTML isn't there. I need the menu, with submenus to exist in HTML on EACH page. Right now, the submenu only exists in HTML for the submenu related to the page being currently viewed. Here's an example of what it SHOULD be like. <ul id="menu"> <li>Page1 <ul class="sub"> <li>sub1.1</li> <li>sub1.2</li> <li>sub1.3</li> <li>sub1.4</li> </ul> </li> <li>Page2 <ul class="sub"> <li>sub2.1</li> <li>sub2.2</li> <li>sub2.3</li> <li>sub2.4</li> </ul> </li> <li>Page3 <ul class="sub"> <li>sub3.1</li> <li>sub3.2</li> <li>sub3.3</li> <li>sub3.4</li> </ul> </li> </ul> But here is what is actually happening (say I'm currently viewing Page2): <ul id="menu"> <li>Page1</li> <li>Page2 <ul class="sub"> <li>sub2.1</li> <li>sub2.2</li> <li>sub2.3</li> <li>sub2.4</li> </ul> </li> <li>Page3</li> </ul> Additionally, and maybe this doesn't have anything to do with it, but whichever list item <li> element is relative to the page i am currently on is given these classes expanded active-trail and any other <li> is given collapsed class. The classes aren't really so much of an issue, the problem is just that the content (html) isn't there. Does anyone have any idea what's going on here. I feel like I've been digging in the Drupal Admin menus forever now. I feel like it's got to have a PHP solution in the template file or something, but I don't know Drupal super well at this point.     In my web application, I create some framework that use to bind model data to control on page. Each model property has some rule like string length, not null and regular expression. Before submit page, framework validate any binded control with defined rules. So, I want to detect what character that is allowed in each regular expression rule like the following example. "^[0-9]$" allow only digit characters like 1, 2, 3. "^[a-zA-Z_][a-zA-Z_-0-9]+$" allow only a-z, - and _ characters However, this function should not care about grouping, positioning of allowed character. It just tells about possible characters only. By the way, complex regular expression like find two words near(\bword1\W+(?:\w+\W+){1,6}?word2\b) must be ignore to verify and it should return any characters is possible. Do you have any idea for creating this function? PS. I know it easy to create specified function like numeric only for allowing only digit characters. But I need share/reuse same piece of code both data tier(contains all model validator) and UI tier without modify anything. Thanks

  • JQuery identify current CSS background-image in three-state icon/button?

    Hi I have three images being used to indicate an application icon state and I'm attempting to use css to do this. No problem with the original or hover states: #myDIV { background-image: url(icons/homeBlack.png); } #myDIV:hover { background-image: url(icons/homeWhite.png); } but I need to do two other things: 1) when the item is clicked it should use the third image $("#myDIV").click(function(event){ // change this button $(this).css("background-image", "url(icons/homeBlue.png)"); }); 2) if it is clicked again it should not apply the third image again because it's already applied - so it needs to check if it has been applied My questions are: 1) simply am I missing a css trick somewhere or is Jquery the best way to do this? 2) can I check which background-image is in place and how? I can't seem to find anything in JQuery that would allow me to determine which image is "currently" in place. Thanks in advance for any help.

  • How to use JNI, but only when available for current platform?

    What is the common way (or best practice) to optionally use JNI? E.g. I have a Java class and this class is 100% pure Java, so it can run on all platforms. However, on some platforms I'd like to speed up some heavy calculations using JNI - which works fine. Unfortunately I cannot support any existing Java platform in the world. So I guess it is fine to initially only support the big three: Linux, Windows, Mac OS X. So what I'd like to do is to use JNI on those three platforms and use the 100% pure Java version on all other platforms. Now I can think of various ways how to do that (loading class dynamically for example and either loading the JNI class or the pure Java one), but thinking that this is a common issue that thousands of projects had to solve in the past for sure, I'm really surprised to not find any documentation or references to the question how to solve this most elegantly or effectively.

  • Does deleting temporary symlinks interrupt current downloads/access to that symlink?

    I am using symlinks generated in PHP. They are generated when someone requests a download, and I want them to expire at the end of each day. The problem is, what if someone starts downloading a symlink 1 minute before the end of the day and then I delete the symlink while they are downloading it... My question is, to your knowledge will that individual downloading the symlink, right before I delete it, still be able to "download" the file? I am not worried about "resumable download" capability.. but will it make their download stop or break in some way?
