  • Can't connect to website after altering IPTables

    - by user2833135
I attempted to open up a port on my VPS, but I can't connect to my website after opening up that port. Below are the commands I issued to open the port. I didn't get an error or anything after setting this up. I just can't connect to my website after doing this. [root@vps ~]# iptables -F [root@vps ~]# iptables -A INPUT -i lo -j ACCEPT [root@vps ~]# iptables -A INPUT -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT [root@vps ~]# iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 25765 -j ACCEPT [root@vps ~]# iptables -P INPUT DROP [root@vps ~]# iptables -P FORWARD DROP [root@vps ~]# iptables -P OUTPUT ACCEPT [root@vps ~]# iptables -L -v Just a side note, but I am running CentOS 6 (64 bit) Thank you in advance.

  • Permissions restoring from Time Machine - Finder copy vs "cp" copy

    - by Ben Challenor
Note: this question was starting to sprawl so I rewrote it. I have a folder that I'm trying to restore from a Time Machine backup. Using cp -R works fine, but certain folders cannot be restored with either the Time Machine UI or Finder. Other users have reported similar errors and the cp -R workaround was suggested (e.g. Restoring from Time Machine - Permissions Error). But I wanted to understand: Why cp -R works when the Finder and the Time Machine UI do not. Whether I could prevent the errors by changing file permissions before the backup. There do indeed seem to be some permissions that Finder works with and some that it does not. I've narrowed the errors down to folders with the user ben (that's me) and the group wheel. Here's a simplified reproduction. I have four folders with the owner/group combinations I've seen so far: ben ~/Desktop/test $ ls -lea total 16 drwxr-xr-x 7 ben staff 238 27 Nov 14:31 . drwx------+ 17 ben staff 578 27 Nov 14:29 .. 0: group:everyone deny delete -rw-r--r--@ 1 ben staff 6148 27 Nov 14:31 .DS_Store drwxr-xr-x 3 ben staff 102 27 Nov 14:30 ben-staff drwxr-xr-x 3 ben wheel 102 27 Nov 14:30 ben-wheel drwxr-xr-x 3 root admin 102 27 Nov 14:31 root-admin drwxr-xr-x 3 root wheel 102 27 Nov 14:31 root-wheel Each contains a single file called file with the same owner/group: ben ~/Desktop/test $ cd ben-staff ben ~/Desktop/test/ben-staff $ ls -lea total 0 drwxr-xr-x 3 ben staff 102 27 Nov 14:30 . drwxr-xr-x 7 ben staff 238 27 Nov 14:31 .. -rw-r--r-- 1 ben staff 0 27 Nov 14:30 file In the backup, they look like this: ben /Volumes/Deimos/Backups.backupdb/Ben’s MacBook Air/Latest/Macintosh HD/Users/ben/Desktop/test $ ls -leA total 16 -rw-r--r--@ 1 ben staff 6148 27 Nov 14:34 .DS_Store 0: group:everyone deny write, delete, append, writeattr, writeextattr, chown drwxr-xr-x@ 3 ben staff 102 27 Nov 14:51 ben-staff 0: group:everyone deny add_file,delete,add_subdirectory,delete_child,writeattr,writeextattr,chown drwxr-xr-x@ 3 ben wheel 102 27 Nov 14:51 ben-wheel 0: group:everyone deny add_file,delete,add_subdirectory,delete_child,writeattr,writeextattr,chown drwxr-xr-x@ 3 root admin 102 27 Nov 14:52 root-admin 0: group:everyone deny add_file,delete,add_subdirectory,delete_child,writeattr,writeextattr,chown drwxr-xr-x@ 3 root wheel 102 27 Nov 14:52 root-wheel 0: group:everyone deny add_file,delete,add_subdirectory,delete_child,writeattr,writeextattr,chown Of these, ben-staff can be restored with Finder without errors. root-wheel and root-admin ask for my password and then restore without errors. But ben-wheel does not prompt for my password and gives the error: The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access “file”. Interestingly, I can restore the file from this folder by dragging it directly to my local drive (instead of dragging its parent folder), but when I do so its permissions are changed to ben/staff. Here are the permissions after the restore for the three folders that worked correctly, and the file from ben-wheel that was changed to ben/staff. ben ~/Desktop/test-restore $ ls -leA total 16 -rw-r--r--@ 1 ben staff 6148 27 Nov 14:46 .DS_Store drwxr-xr-x 3 ben staff 102 27 Nov 14:30 ben-staff -rw-r--r-- 1 ben staff 0 27 Nov 14:30 file drwxr-xr-x 3 root admin 102 27 Nov 14:31 root-admin drwxr-xr-x 3 root wheel 102 27 Nov 14:31 root-wheel Can anyone explain this behaviour? Why do Finder and the Time Machine UI break with the ben / wheel permissions? And why does cp -R work (even without sudo)?

  • Virtual Machine with Bridged Adapter to Centos not accepting ssh from host machine [migrated]

  • UFW as an active service on Ubuntu

    - by lamcro
Every time I restart my computer, and check the status of the UFW firewall (sudo ufw status), it is disabled, even if I then enable and restart it. I tried putting sudo ufw enable as one of the startup applications but it asks for the sudo password every time I log on, and I'm guessing it does not protect anyone else who logs on my computer. How can I setup ufw so it is activated when I turn on my computer, and protects all accounts? Update I just tried /etc/init.d/ufw start, and it activated the firewall. Then I restarted the computer, and again it was disabled. content of /etc/ufw/ufw.conf # /etc/ufw/ufw.conf # # set to yes to start on boot ENABLED=yes # set to one of 'off', 'low', 'medium', 'high' LOGLEVEL=full content of /etc/default/ufw # /etc/default/ufw # # Set to yes to apply rules to support IPv6 (no means only IPv6 on loopback # accepted). • Unix VPS server going down at almost the same time every day

    - by ronnz
My server load seems to be really spiking and many times the server goes down at the same time each night (Around midnight). I have about 20 cPanel accounts hosted on it and have tried everything I know to try to find what is causing the issue. Some of the things I have tried: Combined all site access logs found in /etc/httpd/domlogs and cannot see anything unusual at the time of server going down. Checked most other logs in the var/log directory and found nothing indicating the issue at the time the server is going down. Checked cron logs and cannot see anything unusual.. See below. Last night CPU spiked to 7.5 at 00:14. What else can I be checking? How can I really monitor to find out the root cause? • How do you re-mount an ext3 fs readwrite after it gets mounted readonly from a disk error?

Its a relatively common problem when something goes wrong in a SAN for ext3 to detect the disk write errors and remount the filesystem read-only. Thats all well and good, only when the SAN is fixed I can't figure out how to re-re-mount the filesystem read-write without rebooting. Behold: [root@localhost ~]# multipath -ll mpath0 (36001f93000a310000299000200000000) dm-2 XIOTECH,ISE1400 [size=1.1T][features=1 queue_if_no_path][hwhandler=0][rw] \_ round-robin 0 [prio=2][active] \_ 1:0:0:1 sdb 8:16 [active][ready] \_ 2:0:0:1 sdc 8:32 [active][ready] [root@localhost ~]# mount /dev/mapper/mpath0 /mnt/foo [root@localhost ~]# touch /mnt/foo/blah All good, now I yank the LUN out from under it. I have tried all sorts of different mount/tune2fs/dmsetup commands and I cannot figure out how to get it to un-flag the block device as write-protected. Rebooting will fix it, but I'd much rather do it on-line. An hour of googling has gotten me nowhere either. Save me ServerFault.

  • Where is my CPU usage going?

    - by Josh
My Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid virtual machine is saying it's at 100% CPU usage... but all I'm running is Thunderbird. According to top, CPU usage should be ~25.9%... • Failed to su after making a chroot jail

    - by arepo21
On a 64 bit CentOS host I am using script make_chroot_jail.sh to put a user in a jail, not permitting it to see anything expect it's home at /home/jail/home/user1. I did it typing this: sudo ./make_chroot_jail.sh user1 after, when trying to connect to user1 first i was getting an error like: /bin/su: user guest does not exist i have fixed this by copying some missed libraries: sudo cp /lib64/libnss_compat.so.2 /lib64/libnss_files.so.2 /lib64/libnss_dns.so.2 /lib64/libxcrypt.so.2 /home/jail/lib64/ sudo cp -r /lib64/security/ /home/jail/lib64/ But now, when trying to connect to user1 typing su user1 and then typing it's password, i am getting this error: could not open session So the question is how to connect to user1 in this situation? P.S. Here are the permissions of some files, this might be helpful in order to provide a solution: -rwsr-xr-x 1 root root /home/jail/bin/su drwxr-xr-x 4 root root /home/jail/etc -rw-r--r-- 1 root root /home/jail/etc/pam.d/su -rw-r--r-- 1 root root /home/jail/etc/passwd -rw------- 1 root root /home/jail/etc/shadow UPDATE1 After some modifications i managed to connect to user1, but the session closes immediately! I guess this a PAM issue, however cant find a way to fix it. Here the log entry for close action from /val/log/secure: Oct 6 15:19:42 localhost su: pam_unix(su:session): session closed for user user1 What makes the session to exit immediately after launching?

  • How do I troubleshoot root cause of a hung windows (2003) server?

    - by GregW
I have a pair of Windows (2003 Server) servers both running MS SQL Server (2008 EE) that each hang every few months. This has been occurring intermittently :( for the past 15 months pretty much since we started using the servers. The symptoms are as-follows: I cannot remote desktop in to troubleshoot; when I attempt to, I get stuck on a blank black screen and am never offered a login prompt I can still ping the servers I can still open a SQL connection to the server, and, CURIOUSLY/BIZARRELY, when I do a "select getdate()", the time it returns appears to be stuck on the exact fraction of a second when (I presume) the server hung. Repeated attempts to do "select getdate()" keep getting that same date, suggesting that the clock is frozen. Filesharing attempts to connect to the hung server fail with the error message: "\ServerName is not accessible. You might not have permissions to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The server's clock is not synchronized with the primary domain controller's clock." This is consistent with a frozen clock. Post-reboot, if I investigate the Windows Event Viewer logs, I can see many security accesses (coming from me and others) that I recognize were login attempts during the "down" period, but all of them in the security log are associated with that same timestamp of when the server hung. This also suggests the clock is frozen. There is not a clear cause in the Application or System event logs. I have a local Admin account on the server and am in the process of getting a domain-credentialed Admin account for better remote admin access. HP is supposed to be supporting these machines and has some low-level ILO2 access but they seem incapable of finding the root cause. A reboot will "fix" the problem but I would like to get to the root cause and solve the issue. Has anyone ever seen something like this odd clock behavior?! (If it were just one server I'd perhaps say a bad hardware clock, but two?) Can anyone advise me on what I should try to troubleshoot this sort of situation to find the root cause (or what I should tell HP to try?)

  • How can I permanently remove default root hints from a Server 2008 DNS server?

    - by TonyD
My network exists in private address space and I am unable to perform DNS lookups against DNS servers on the internet directly (blocked by firewall). There are other networks that exist in the same private address space as my network. I need to be able to perform DNS lookups for devices in these networks as well. There are 2 main internal DNS servers in this private address space, but not on my netowrk. I can perform DNS lookups against both of these servers for devices internal to our address space and names on the internet. I would like to permanently remove the root hints from our Server 2008 R2 DNS server and replace them with these 2 internal DNS servers. I have removed them from the dnsmgmt console, the C:\Windows\System32\DNS\cache.dns file, and from the RootDNSServers folder under the System folder in ADUC. Even so, they continue to repopulate into the root hints tab in the server properties for DNS after roughly an hour. Does anyone know how to permanently remove these entries?

  • How to install software packages on a shared Red Hat Linux host account without root access or rpm?

    - by jeff
I have a shared RHEL 4 host account where I do not have root privileges. I would like to install Git and Bash Complete in a way that they can be upgraded easily. To date, I've just been installing from source providing $HOME as a prefix to autoconf. Obviously this isn't ideal as I need to hunt down the files associated with the version I'm upgrading away from and delete them. I've tried using rpm but I just get -bash: rpm: command not found back so it's not available. I also looked into checkinstall but it looks like that requires rpm, dpkg, or Slackware's package manager to be available. Is there anything out there that can be used like a package manager without requiring root access or an existing package manager?

  • Problems mounting HPUX LVM+VXFS filesystem on Linux

    I have a physical disk from a HPUX system that I need to access from a Debian Linux for ia64 system. From the hpux-lvm-tools project I have the tools to access the HPUX LVMs (Linux LVM has a different format) and I also have the freevxfs driver. I am using Eclipse in Linux through a remote connection (xrdp). My internet got disconnected, so I got disconnected from the server while eclipse was running. Now I logged in again, and I do the "top" command I can see that eclipse is running and still under my user name. On two different servers (with Ubuntu 12.04LTS AMD64) I have seen the following behaviour: op - 10:50:05 up 305 days, 21:17, 1 user, load average: 1.94, 2.52, 2.97 Tasks: 141 total, 2 running, 139 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie Cpu(s): 41.5%us, 6.5%sy, 0.0%ni, 51.8%id, 0.0%wa, 0.2%hi, 0.1%si, 0.0%st Mem: 8178432k total, 5753740k used, 2424692k free, 159480k buffers Swap: 15625208k total, 0k used, 15625208k free, 4905292k cached PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 1 root 20 0 23928 2072 1216 S 0 0.0 0:56.42 init 2 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.01 kthreadd 3 root RT 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:01.23 migration/0 4 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 2:39.82 ksoftirqd/0 5 root RT 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 watchdog/0 6 root RT 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:02.99 migration/1 7 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 2:32.15 ksoftirqd/1 8 root RT 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 watchdog/1 9 root RT 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 0:11.67 migration/2 10 root 20 0 0 0 0 S 0 0.0 29:00.34 ksoftirqd/2 The server is working fine, but top shows all processes as using 0% CPU. A reboot fixed this on an earlier machine, but I haven't yet tried it on this one. I have tried top several times, and so am sure that I haven't accidentally pressed '<' or '' to sort by a different column. Sorting the process list by all of the available columns, stills shows 0% CPU for all displayed processes. What is going on? If this a kernel bug? Update: If I use top -p <PID> for a know, busy process, top still displays 0% CPU for that process.

  • How to download all file content from a folder using wget and http

    - by user1526912
I am trying to use wget and http to download all contents from folderAA below to directory /root/sstest wget -r --directory-prefix="/root/sstest" -o /root/sstest2.log http://site.com/folder1/folder2/folderAA/ When I submit the above command nothing is downloaded. If I submit a wget request for a specific file from folderAA the file is actually downloaded to /root/sstest: wget -r --directory-prefix="/root/sstest" -o /root/sstest2.log http://site.com/folder1/folder2/folderAA/file.txt Can someone tell me why I cannot download all file content from folderAA at once using the first wget request?

  • Can't get DNS Alias work on Ubuntu 10.04 with Apache 2

    I want to use the DNS Alias to configure one of my domain pointing to a specific directory on the server. Here is what I've done: Change the IP address in domain setting, and it works $ ping www.example.com PING example.com (124.205.62.xxx): 56 data bytes 64 bytes from 124.205.62.xxx: icmp_seq=0 ttl=48 time=53.088 ms 64 bytes from 124.205.62.xxx: icmp_seq=1 ttl=48 time=52.125 ms ^C --- example.com ping statistics --- 2 packets transmitted, 2 packets received, 0.0% packet loss round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 52.125/52.606/53.088/0.482 ms Add sites-available and sites-enabled $ ls -l /etc/apache2/sites-available/ total 16 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 948 2010-04-14 03:27 default -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 7467 2010-04-14 03:27 default-ssl -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 365 2010-06-09 18:27 example.com $ ls -l /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/ total 0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 26 2010-06-09 15:46 000-default -> ../sites-available/default lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 33 2010-06-09 18:17 001-example.com -> ../sites-available/example.com But it doesn't work and when I open the browser for www.example.com, it shows an 111 error: The following error was encountered: Connection to 124.205.62.48 Failed The system returned: (111) Connection refused Here is how example.com's config: $ cat /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/001-example.com <virtualhost *:80> DocumentRoot "/vhosts/example.com/htdocs/" ServerName www.example.com ServerAlias example.com <Location /> Order Deny,Allow Deny from None Allow from all </Location> #Include /etc/phpmyadmin/apache.conf ErrorLog /vhosts/example.com/logs/error.log CustomLog /vhosts/example.com/logs/access.log combined Could you please tell me how to solve this?

  • CentOS: Init scripts failing to start for some unknown reason

    - by user705142
I'm running CentOS 6.2 - I've just migrated some applications over to a failover server, and copied their init scripts into /etc/init.d. I've made them executable, added them to chkconfig, with chkconfig -add, set their levels, made sure they're residing in /etc/rc.d/ - made sure I can execute them from rc2.d etc. The permissions are the same on both servers. They're also running in the same order as on the primary server Yet on reboot they don't start. Any ideas? The offenders are these: jetty 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off smart 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off /etc/init.d: -rwxr-xr-x. 1 root root 14456 Mar 13 20:21 jetty -rwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 5829 Mar 29 09:58 smart /etc/rc.d/rc3.d lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 15 Mar 29 19:21 S99jetty -> ../init.d/jetty lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 11 Mar 26 17:12 S99local -> ../rc.local lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 15 Mar 29 19:21 S99smart -> ../init.d/smart I've checked, and I'm in run level 3. I've checked their logs, and there's no indication that that they've been started. I can start them manually easily - and other services are starting normally. I'm completely out of ideas really.

  • Issue with kernel boot [OVH SERVER]

    - by Conner Stephen McCabe
Trying to install OpenVZ kernel on Centos 6.3, Yes my kernel is installed i can see it in the /boot folder, yes it is Rhel6 and yes it is all up to date, i checked this with yum update. My issue comes when i reboot my server with that kernel set as the default, it doesn't load, below i shall put a copy of my grub.conf file and my menu.lst file. Grub.conf: default=0 timeout=5 title vzkernel (2.6.32-042stab057.1) root (hd0,0) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-042stab057.1 ro root=/dev/sda1 initrd /initramfs-2.6.32-042stab057.1.img title linux centos6_64 kernel /boot/bzImage-3.2.13-xxxx-grs-ipv6-64 root=/dev/sda1 ro root (hd0,0) Now i shall paste in Menu.lst; # grub.conf generated by anaconda # # Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file # NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. This means that # all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /boot/, eg. # root (hd0,0) # kernel /vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/mapper/vg_stock-lv_root # initrd /initrd-[generic-]version.img #boot=/dev/sda default=0 timeout=5 splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz hiddenmenu title Linux OpenVZ (vmlinuz-2.6.32-042stab057.1) root (hd0,0) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-042stab057.1 ro root=/dev/mapper/vg_stock-lv_root rd_LVM_LV=vg_stock/lv_root rd_LVM_LV=vg_stock/lv_swap rd_NO_LUKS rd_NO_MD rd_NO_DM LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SYSFONT=l$ initrd /initramfs-2.6.32-042stab057.1.img title CentOS (2.6.32-71.el6.x86_64) root (hd0,0) kernel /boot/bzImage-3.2.13-xxxx-grs-ipv6-64 ro root=/dev/mapper/vg_stock-lv_root rd_LVM_LV=vg_stock/lv_root rd_LVM_LV=vg_stock/lv_swap rd_NO_LUKS rd_NO_MD rd_NO_DM LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SYSFO$ initrd /initramfs-2.6.32-71.el6.x86_64.img # dummy text Somebody mentioned something about OVH having added a script which changes the kernel settings or something, and suggested that we either remove the script or reinstall using a VNC, but we don't know how to go about doing either of these? Really would be great if you guys could help. Thanks in advance.

  • Can't validate mine, sudo nor root in Debian "Jessie" Gnome anymore?

    - by Janar
I'm Debian beginner & GUI guy in a bit of trouble? Can't login as sudo/gksu/root/su nor as (main/super)user after removed user password via Gnome-user-settings. History of actions (Probably irrelevant though) Installed Debian "Jessie" GNU/Linux with xFce GUI (en-US) as only OS. HardWare is ThinkPad w510. Skipped root user password in setup, to get sudo for superuser easily. Logged in (as always had) with Gnome (3.4.x), not once with xFCE. (installed Xfce. Installed xFce only to achieve more control (easier management) over packages this way, to set-up gnome much more by mine likes. Added more jessie repros (same ones as in Wheesy stable by default but for Jessie as, Jessie only had repros for security updates by default). Installed lots of gtk(3) & gnome(3) based soft; (- restarted again after this) Installed propietary graphics card driver for mine nvidia quadro. (- restarted once again after that one) Installed more stuff related to mine work/school/devel. The actual problem Had a plan to restart again, but wanted to set up auto-login first, instead set user password to none (don't ask why / perhaps caused by being awake for a looooong time), noticed it, and set also to auto-login, but couldn't undo mine previous mistake to create new password for me. As mine password is set to none I would have expected that simply return in pass prompt for emty password field would do, but it won't authenticate. I tried Alt+F2 "gksu gedit" as well as: sudo wget "https://www.some-page.eu/file.ext" and "su" in terminals, none has applied (quite logical actually - as I'm sudoer and highest ranked super user, besides only user in computer). Current stand Everything worked & still works nice after this accident, besides this password prompts part. To spoked to log-out nor restart. Synaptic package-manager is still open with root rights (only one, that has left open prior to the issue and not closed since, just in case). Goggled for help and read some manuals/faqs/how-tos - mostly lead to sudoers file management, but not found one specifically for mine issue - so still not any smarter. Really hope, that I don't have to redo OS inst all over again, by just one stupid mistake. Thanks for your reply :-)
