  • Remove Live ID authentication from user account

    I've just run in to a really annoying issue with Windows 8.1 - it seems I cannot remove the need to use Live ID credentials from an account without completely deleting that account. I know the process to do it - use the Disconnect link from the Accounts-Your account screen. The trouble comes when you get to the Switch to a local account screen, it will not let you enter the current account for the user name, instead you must enter a new one thus creating a new user account. Can I revert back to using just a local login without having to recreate the account? It seems quite retarded that I have to recreate the account, as deep down the only change required is which credential provider is used to authenticate the login. (Note that this Live ID linkage was created by using the Windows Store, not as a result of an upgrade from 8 to 8.1).

    I'm listening to a net radio on my PC I want the sound to go through my boombox cause it has nice speakers/amp The boombox has no "incoming" audio jack that just plays what comes over the wire However the boombox has a USB jack where you can put a thumbdrive with music. The question: How do I make the PC pretend to be a mass-storage device, and dynamically send all received audiodata to the boombox over a symmetric male USB cable?     I have a mount point — let it be /media/question — and two possible devices: a physical HDD and a remote NFS folder. Sometimes I plug the device in physically, in other cases I mount it via NFS. Is there a way to specify both of them in fstab so that executing mount /media/question will preferably choose physical volume, and when it's not available — NFS?

  • ubuntu 12.10/linux mint 14 ssh-copy-id doesn't work and returns Ambiguous output redirect

    I recently got a new computer and I'm trying to use ssh-copy-id to put my keys on another server so I can login without password. but when I try ssh-copy-id -i ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub user@server and after inputting the correct password it returns Ambiguous output redirect. There are no other messages after that. I thought it was maybe just Ubuntu 12.10 so I installed Linux Mint 14 and sure enough exact same thing happens. I've tried removing authorized_keys from the remote server but that didn't change anything.

  • VPN: What should my Gateway remote ID be?

    I have a Netgear ProSafe UTM. I set the Gateway local ID to it's WAN IP. But I'm not sure what to put for it's Remote ID. I want to be able to connect to it from a laptop across the internet. I can chose between: Remote IP FQDN Client FQDN Cert DN Frankly I've tried them messing around with them all but I'm just shooting in the dark, and the help desk docs are worthless. Also, Googling around seems to end up with lots of pages not really related to what I want. A lot of pages on configuring Cisco or Windows home networking or privacy advocates.

  • Restoring a SD card after using it to root a device

    I recently purchased the Nook Touch reading device. I rooted it using the instructions on nookdevs.com Rooting included using win32diskimager to somehow transfer an .img file onto the card. Rooting is now completed and as far as I can tell, I don't need to keep the files used on the SD card, which has been reduced from a 3.5 GB or so unit to a 75 MB unit. Is there a simple way for me to somehow reformat the SD card to its original state or at least 3.5 GB. I cannot simply format it.

  • SQL cluster instance names for large project

    We're setting up two clusters. One dev and one prod. The Production will host two SQL instances - a OLTP and a DW. The development will host 4 OLTP non-production environments and at least one DW non-production. We're working on getting more DW non-prods and possibly more OLTP systems. I'm considering a naming scheme like this, where PROJ would be 3 initials for the project name. Dev Cluster MSSQLPROJD1\D1 (DEV) MSSQLPROJD2\D2 (TEST) MSSQLPROJD3\D3 (QA) MSSQLPROJD4\D4 (STAGE) MSSQLPROJD5\D5 (DW) Prd Cluster MSSQLPROJP1\P1 (PRD) MSSQLPROJP2\P2 (DW) To the left of the slash, each name must be unique network wide. On each server, the instance name, to the right of the slash, must be unique. Any thoughts on this? I'm trying to avoid having instance names drifting from reality as the project progresses - say we change what we call a certain environment or want to repurpose one. Then we can update a listing of the purposes for the instances and be done with it. How has a scheme like this worked out for you? Maybe you do things another way in your shop - tell me about it.     Is it possible to prevent or disable autorun/autoplay/device-stage by modifying regedit? Because of some constraints, I cannot disable by Control Panel options. I found some related questions here, for example, and some solutions provided by Microsoft, mainly involving this key on regedit: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer\NoDriveTypeAutorun But none of these solutions worked, neither after rebooting. Is there any other key or value that controls this kind of property?

EDIT 2: Booted up windows, and the port is working. I went into the device manager and looked at the USB settings. I found my USB drive on Port 2, Hub 3, i just don't know how that relates to the Bus and Device numbers of linux. In windows, Smart card reader was on USB hub located at port 1 hub 2, fingerprint and bluetooth were on USB hub located at port 1 hub 1 EDIT 3: Went and looked at this SO post. Tried to look at my kern.log file with tail -f /var/log/kern.log. Got some activity when plugging/removing devices in other ports, but nothing happens when connecting a device into that port. It really looks disabled. Looked at my usb1-4 sys/bus/usb/devices/usb1/power/control and they are all set on auto. As expected, usb4 have version 3.00, the others (usb1-usb3) are 2.00.

  • Configuring a MySQL 5.1 Instance on Windows 7 Professional x64 Fails

    I'm trying to set up my laptops to function as mobile development environments. Installing the software on my Linux machine and getting it configured was fairly straightforward, however I'm having trouble getting MySQL 5.1 Server installed and configured on Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. I'm currently using the Windows MSI Installer for the complete MySQL 5.1 system (as opposed to the Essentials installer also available). I've tried to install using both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of MySQL 5.1 - the same events occur in both. I've installed both the Server Instance Configuration Wizard and Workbench and everything appears to be installed just fine. When I open the Instance Configuration Wizard, I select Detailed Configuration. On the next screen, I select Development Environment, then Multifunctional Database on the next screen. I leave the InnoDB settings unchanged. I select Manual Setting with 5 concurrent connections. I enable TCP/IP Networking on Port 3306 and Enable Strict Mode. I select the Standard Character Set. I check the boxes for Install as a Windows Service (and provide the name "MySQL") and Include the Bin Directory in Windows PATH. On the next screen, I set my root user name and password. I do not enable root access from remote machines and I also do not create an anonymous account. On the final screen of the wizard, when I click "Execute", the first two tasks (Prepare Configuration and Write Configuration File) complete. However, when it reaches Start Service, the wizard hangs and becomes unresponsive ("Not Responding" appears in the title bar and Task Manager). I would really like to be able to use both my Windows and Linux laptops as full-blown mobile development environments, but I can't do that without being able to run MySQL. Has anyone encountered this problem before? What options do I have to correct it?

  • sysbench memory test on ec2 small instance

    I'm seeing a problem with sysbench memory test (the default version that's compiled in). This is on Ubuntu Maverick, sysbench installed via apt-get install sysbench. Running the same thing on Ubuntu @ Rackspace worked just as expected. While the CPU and I/O tests worked fine on EC2 servers, the memory test just runs without doing anything (notice the 0M in the test results). The instance used was the publicly available 'stock' Ubuntu image with no changes to it: ./ec2-run-instances ami-ccf405a5 --instance-type m1.small --region us-east-1 --key mykey Supplying more arguments (such as: --memory-block-size=1K --memory-total-size=102400M) didn't help. What am I doing wrong?   • Easy way to switch default sound output device

    I want an easier way to change my default sound device from my sound card to my usb headset. Currently it takes a very precise right click, a left click, another right click, and two more left clicks. Ideally i could just have it swap with a shortcut key. (it was a little easier in XP but not by much.) A software solution is preferred, but I am open to suggestions that use hardware. I am running Windows 7 currently.

I'm using flowroute as my carrier. Is there something wrong on their side?

    I am trying to set up a ZFS pool using 4 bare drives which I have attached to my Ubuntu system via a SATA hot swap backplane. These are Hitachi SATA drives. The serial number for the first one, for example, is YNG0ZJ7C. Why are there two entries here for each drive? More to the point, when I create my ZFS pool which one should I use; the scsi- one or the ata- one?

    When running some of your Windows Azure applications when storage emulator is not configured you may get the following error: "Windows Azure Tools: Failed to initialize Windows Azure storage emulator. Unable to start Development Storage. Failed to start Storage Emulator: the SQL Server instance ‘localhost\SQLExpress’ could not be found.   Please configure the SQL Server instance for Storage Emulator using the ‘DSInit’ utility in the Windows Azure SDK.". Here’s how to solve this problem. You need to run DSInit utility to create database. For Windows Azure SDK 1.6 the location for DSInit utility is: C:\Program Files\Windows Azure Emulator\emulator\devstore By default DSInit expects that your database server is (local)\SQLEXPRESS but you can change it easily. If you have MSSQL instance called SQLEXPRESS then it is enough to just run DSInit. If you need some other instance then run the following command: DSInit /sqlinstance:<instance name> For default instance use “.” as instance name: DSInit /sqlinstance:. You can find more information about sqlinstance and other switches from DSInit documentation. If database was correctly created you should see dialog like this: When storage database is ready you can run your application.
