• Browser extension (or other software) to delay page load

  The alt text to today's comic at xkcd.com (strip below) says: After years of trying, I broke this habit in a day by decoupling the action and the neurological reward. I set up a simple 30-second delay I had to wait through, in which I couldn't do anything else, before any new page or chat client would load (and only allowed one to run at once). The urge to check all those sites magically vanished--and my 'productive' computer use was unaffected. (bold is my emphasis) Does anybody know of a browser extension or other software that will add this sort of delay? I've seen extensions which simply block sites, but not a delay like this.

• Windows - A different way to Search files by extension

  I'd like to search all files that are different from a specific extension. So, if I search files by using the string *.doc I'd like to see every files that are not .doc. I also would like to hidden the sub-folders in the result display by using that search (but the search must of course search into sub-folders) :) Is it possible this on Windows Vista/7? SOLUTION Finded the solution by using this string NOT *.doc AND NOT tipologia:=cartella This for the italian version. English should be similar, somethings like NOT *.doc AND NOT kind:=folder

• Server 2008 won't run executables from CMD prompt without .exe extension

  On one of our production server 2008 boxes, I cannot run executables from a CMD prompt without supplying the full filename, including the '.exe' extension. For example, when running "java" produced the usual "is not recognized as an internal or external command" message, I assumed I had borked the path and/or java_home variables. However, even navigating to the %java_home%\bin directory and typing "java" produced the same error. If I type "java.exe" instead, all works perfectly. The problem does not only affect java.exe. Even Microsoft executables suffer the same problem -- ping fails, ping.exe works; ipconfig fails, ipconfig.exe works; manually created batch file 'test' only works when invoked explicitly as 'test.bat'. Any bright ideas?

• Signed and unsigned, and how bit extension works

  unsigned short s; s = 0xffff; int i = s; How does the extension work here? 2 larger order bytes are added, but I'm confused whether 1's or 0's are extended there. This is probably platform dependent so let's focus on what Unix does. Would the two bigger order bytes of the int be filled with 1's or 0's, and why? Basically, does the computer know that s is unsigned, and correctly assign 0's to the higher order bits of the int? So i is now 0x0000ffff? Or since ints are default signed in unix does it take the signed bit from s (a 1) and copy that to the higher order bytes?

• Powershell script to append an extension to a file, input from CSV

  Hi All, All I need is to have an Excel list of file paths and use Powershell to append (not replace) the same extension on to each file. It should be very simple, right? The problem I'm seeing is that if I go input-csv -path myfile.csv | write-host I get the following output: @{FullName=C:\Users\jpalumbo\test\appendto.me} @{FullName=C:\Users\jpalumbo\test\append_list.csv} @{FullName=C:\Users\jpalumbo\test\leavemealone.txt} In other words it looks like it's outputting the CSV "formatting" as well. However if I just issue import-csv -path myfile.csv, the output is what I expect: FullName -------- C:\Users\jpalumbo\test\appendto.me C:\Users\jpalumbo\test\append_list.csv C:\Users\jpalumbo\test\leavemealone.txt Clearly there's no file called "@{FullName=C:\Users\jpalumbo\test\leavemealone.txt}" and a rename on that won't work, so I'm not sure how to best get this data out of the import-csv command, or whether to store it in an object, or what. • Alternatives to the ClickToPlugin Safari extension for Chrome users

  I have been using Safari with ClickToPlugin and was wondering if there was anything similar for Chrome. I am looking for both the click-through to plugin functionality as well as the HTML5 video replacements. I've done some looking around the Chrome extensions page and found some specific extensions to help with forcing the HTML5 on YouTube or to block Flash but none seem offer the generic functionality (click-through works for any given plugin) and flexibility that ClickToPlugin does (ClickToPlugin has HTML5 video replacements for a plethora of websites). I am looking to mimic the aforementioned features in Chrome, but they don't necessarily have to be provided by one single extension.

• Can't serve files without extension because they "appear to be script" on IIS7.5

  I created a certain number of static JSON files with no extension in a subfolder of my site. I want to use them for tests. The problem is that IIS is refusing to serve them because : HTTP Error 404.17 - Not Found The requested content appears to be script and will not be served by the static file handler. The folder is a subfolder of an ASP.NET application and I can't create an application just for it, neither can I change the parent application's application pool. Actually, I don't have access to the IIS configuration other than through the web.config file in the folder in question. I assume there must be a way to get a web server to serve static files, right?

• Associate file extension to application running in XP MODE

  Hi I'm running a legacy application in XP mode under Win7 Professional. The application installs, runs and publishes fine (appears in win7 start menu by itself after install). However, when I want to associate a file extension from Win7 so that it opens automatically in that application, I don't have it on the list of available applications, and i found no way to add it there. Anyone knows how it can be done? I've read about associating file extensions with remote apps on TS2008, but there it's done by setting the associations in the MSI that is built on the server and used to install the app on the client. Here I have no such tools. Help would be appreciated! Vadim R.

• How to install a new PHP extension on IIS 7.5

  I have installed PHP 5.2.13 through Web Platform Installer on IIS 7.5/windows 2008 R2 Now I'm trying to install additional PHP extensions, such as mcrypt, so I downloaded the compiled .zip file from the php windows binaries site. I put the relevant dlls in the extensions folder, and added the lines in the php.ini: [PHP_MCRYPT] extension=php_mcrypt.dll After restarting IIS, no application was working. This was with VC6 compiled/non thread-safe compiled version of PHP 5.2.13 .zip package. I also tried with the thread-safe version, which prevented IIS to restart and forced me to reboot the server. What am I doing wrong here?

Right now www.myexample.com/information/ Serves /information.php. Great! However www.myexample.com/categories/category-1/ this throws a 404 even though the file /categories/category-1.php does exist. I would like to modify my .htaccess file so this serves /categories/category-1.php.

  I have some modifications I want to make WITHOUT installing extensions. eg: max width of tab and height of menu, In previous versions you could have it done via: about:config ->browser.tabs.tab.maxWidth Since FF4 it should be done with CSS. Now I searched the default theme: C:\Users\wetcat\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\feriz.default and C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox In the second I could find the extension - theme but without any CSS. In the AppData I couldn't find any CSS or theme folder. WHERE is the file to create or alter the CSS?? I'm using Firefox 11.

  How can I add the suffix on the day number of a unix date? I'll explain. I have a TextMate bundle snippit that writes out today's date. It uses unix date and formatting. Here is the code: `date +%A` `date +%d` `date +%B` `date +%Y` It outputs: Monday 22 March 2010 I would like to add the suffix to the day (st, nd, rd and th) like so: Monday 22nd March 2010 As far as I can see, there is no native function in the unix date formatting, like there is in PHP (j). How would I achieve this in unix? A complicated regex on the day number?

• fullcalendar, how to limit the number of events per day in the month view

  I have many events on a day, and it works as expected but now looking at the month view, my calendar grid is much taller that expected. I'd like to hide some of these events from the month view, like a summary with a visual que that there are more on this day than can be shown. I can use eventRender and return false, but i would like to know how many events are on a given day, so i can limit the rendering to about 4, then perhaps i would add an event that says " more ... " So the question may be : how to count the events on a given date ? or is this more like a feature request to expose a max counter for month view ? thanks

  Overview: I have a table which stores a persons "availability" for a current day, e.g. Mon - 8:00am - 11:30am Mon - 1:30pm - 6:00pm A second table stores appointments that this person already has for the same day, e.g. Mon - 8:30am - 11:00am Mon - 2:30pm - 4pm Desired result: Doing calculationsI'd like to have the following result - e.g. "this person has availability on the given day": Mon - 8:00am - 8:30am Mon - 11:00am - 11:30am Mon - 1:30pm - 2:30pm Mon - 4:00pm - 6:00pm Any ideas on how to calculate the output given the two inputs (e.g. availability, existing appointments) would be greatly appreciated. Preferably I'd use javascript on the client to do the calculating as I would believe that doing it within the DB (I'm using MSSQL) would be slow for many records, persons, etc. Hope this is enough information to illustrate the problem at hand - Many thanks in advance.

  When I installed pdo-pgsql, the extension was installed into /usr/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20090626/ and thus not automatically loaded. • SPARC T3-1 Record Results Running JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Day in the Life Benchmark with Added Batch Component

  Using Oracle's SPARC T3-1 server for the application tier and Oracle's SPARC Enterprise M3000 server for the database tier, a world record result was produced running the Oracle's JD Edwards EnterpriseOne applications Day in the Life benchmark run concurrently with a batch workload. The SPARC T3-1 server based result has 25% better performance than the IBM Power 750 POWER7 server even though the IBM result did not include running a batch component. The SPARC T3-1 server based result has 25% better space/performance than the IBM Power 750 POWER7 server as measured by the online component. The SPARC T3-1 server based result is 5x faster than the x86-based IBM x3650 M2 server system when executing the online component of the JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 9.0.1 Day in the Life benchmark. The IBM result did not include a batch component. The SPARC T3-1 server based result has 2.5x better space/performance than the x86-based IBM x3650 M2 server as measured by the online component. The combination of SPARC T3-1 and SPARC Enterprise M3000 servers delivered a Day in the Life benchmark result of 5000 online users with 0.875 seconds of average transaction response time running concurrently with 19 Universal Batch Engine (UBE) processes at 10 UBEs/minute. The solution exercises various JD Edwards EnterpriseOne applications while running Oracle WebLogic Server 11g Release 1 and Oracle Web Tier Utilities 11g HTTP server in Oracle Solaris Containers, together with the Oracle Database 11g Release 2. The SPARC T3-1 server showed that it could handle the additional workload of batch processing while maintaining the same number of online users for the JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Day in the Life benchmark. This was accomplished with minimal loss in response time. JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 9.0.1 takes advantage of the large number of compute threads available in the SPARC T3-1 server at the application tier and achieves excellent response times. The SPARC T3-1 server consolidates the application/web tier of the JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 9.0.1 application using Oracle Solaris Containers. Containers provide flexibility, easier maintenance and better CPU utilization of the server leaving processing capacity for additional growth. A number of Oracle advanced technology and features were used to obtain this result: Oracle Solaris 10, Oracle Solaris Containers, Oracle Java Hotspot Server VM, Oracle WebLogic Server 11g Release 1, Oracle Web Tier Utilities 11g, Oracle Database 11g Release 2, the SPARC T3 and SPARC64 VII+ based servers. This is the first published result running both online and batch workload concurrently on the JD Enterprise Application server. No published results are available from IBM running the online component together with a batch workload. The 9.0.1 version of the benchmark saw some minor performance improvements relative to 9.0. When comparing between 9.0.1 and 9.0 results, the reader should take this into account when the difference between results is small. • MySQL replication not working on leap day

  Though out of my "core" knowledge I maintain a two-way replicated MySQL database (primary and backup). It's been working fine mostly. All changes are almost instantly replicated between the two servers. But now I've noticed something strange: I have a couple of cases where there are no replication on feb 29th. Admittedly I have not yet confirmed that all replication is lost. But all cases I've found so far have had this issue. Not too long ago I changed timezone from UTC to CET on the backup, it has been CET on the primary all along. Am I fixating on this because it happened on the leap day, or could there be something to it? The servers are both CentOS 5.4 with MySQL 5.0

• iptables: limiting bytes downloaded per IP per day?

  On a public-facing web server, I'd like to limit the total bytes downloaded per IP address per day. For example, after a visitor downloaded 100MB, any additional requests would be dropped or rejected for the next 24 hours. Is it possible to accomplish this using iptables alone? The connbytes, connlimit, hashlimit, quota, and recent options all look promising, but the man page plays its cards close to the vest (e.g., "quota - Implements network quotas by decrementing a byte counter with each packet. --quota bytes The quota in bytes."). Would like to avoid using a proxy (like Squid) if possible.

  It's one of those things you just take for granted until one day someone asks you and you realize you can't answer it. Much like for years I never questioned the use of 1033 directories in Microsoft products for years until one day, someone asked me about it. Around the release of .NET and Office 2007, Microsoft added an x to basically all of their extensions and I frankly took it as representing XML, but that simply doesn't make sense with .aspx. So, I realize this is a very non technical question, but now that the question has been asked of me and my googling hasn't given me an answer, can anyone tell me with authority what the X represents? Is it extended? Xml? Or is there no meaning behind it?

• Recurring network issues the same time every day.

  Something has been happening on my company's network at 9:30 every day. I'm not the sysadmin but he's not a ServerFault guy so I'm not privy to every aspect of the network but I can ask questions if follow up is needed. The symptoms are the following : Sluggish network and download speed (I don't notice it, but others do) 3Com phones start ringing without having people on the other end. We've got the following ports exposed to the public for a web server, a few other ports for communicating with our clients for tech support and a VPN. We've got a Cisco ASA blocking everything else. We've got a smallish network (less than 50 computers/vms on at any time). An Active Directory server and a few VM servers. We host our own mail server too. I'm thinking the problem is internal, but what's a good way to figure out where it's coming from?

  I started using DOS back before Windows, and ever since have taken it for granted that Every file has a file extension, like .txt, .jpg, etc That extension is always short (usually 3 letters) I learned early that the extension is basically just a hint to the OS as to what the content type is. Eventually I got exposed to Mac and Linux, files with no extensions, etc. And of course I've seen shorter extensions, like .rb and .py. I just noticed that markdown-formatted files can have the extension .markdown, and it made me wonder - how long can that extension be? If I make it .mycrazylongextensiontypewoohoo, will certain operating systems or programs choke on the file? Are extension names generally short just for convenience, or is this based on some limitation, legacy or current?

  I have several RESTful endpoints like such: System.Security.Role.svc System.Security.User.svc etc. This is meant to be a namespace so our RESTful URL's would look like: /rest/{class namespace}/{actions} I have tried a few examples to get the SVC extension removed when my endpoint has multiple periods in it, however, nothing seems to work. I have tested with the WCF REST Contrib package (http://wcfrestcontrib.codeplex.com/), this example (http://www.west-wind.com/weblog/posts/570695.aspx), and another StackOverflow post (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/355165/how-to-remove-thie-svc-extension-in-restful-wcf-service). This works great when my endpoint is something like this: Echo.svc It will properly remove the SVC extension. Any ideas on how to handle endpoints with multiple periods in the endpoint name? EDIT: After some further testing, I found out that it is failing because whenever you do: string path = HttpContext.Current.Request.AppRelativeCurrentExecutionFilePath; If the endpoint contains multiple periods, it strips off everything after the endpoint causing all of the standard IHttpModule's to fail. Example: If I call http://localhost/services/Echo/test, my relative app file path has a returned value of: ~/echo/test However, if I make a call as http://localhost/services/System.Security.User/test, then my relative app file path has a returned value of: ~/system.security.user I am missing the '/test' on the end in that situation.

• What VC++ compiler/linker does when building a C++ project with Managed Extension

  The initial problem is that I tried to rebuild a C++ project with debug symbols and copied it to test machine, The output of the project is external COM server(.exe file). When calling the COM interface function, there's a RPC call failre: COMException(0x800706BE): The remote procedure call failed. According to the COM HRESULT design, if the FACILITY code is 7, it's actually a WIN32 error, and the win32 error code is 0x6BE, which is the above mentioned "remote procedure call failed". All I do is replace the COM server .exe file, the origin file works well. When I checked into the project, I found it's a C++ project with Managed Extension. When I checking the DLL with reflector, it shows there's 2 additional .NET assembly reference. Then I checked the project setting and found nothing about the extra 2 assembly reference. I turned on the show includes option of compiler and verbose library of linker, and try to analyze whether the assembly is indirectly referenced via .h file. I've collect all the .h file and grep all the files with '#using' '#import' and the assembly file itself. There really is a '#using ' in one of the .h file but not-relevant to the referenced assembly. And about the linked .lib library files, only one of the .lib file is a side-product of another managed-extension-enabled C++ project, all others are produced by a pure, traditional C++ project. For the managed-extension-enabled C++ project, I checked the output DLL assembly, it did NOT reference to the 2 assembly. I even try to capture the access of the additional assembly file via sysinternal's filemon and procmon, but the rebuild process does NOT access these file. I'm very confused about the compile and linking process model of a VC++/CLI project, where the additional assembly reference slipped into the final assembly? Thanks in advance for any of your help.
