• How to separate Hyper-V Private network from the External network

  I am setting up a virtual test lab and I configured a domain controller VM running Windows 2008 R2 on my Hyper-V 2008 R2 server. I needed to download and install updates on it so I added an External NIC adapter and got that done. However, systems on my actual real physical domain were pulling IPs from this server and that was a big oopsy on my part so I immediately removed the External NIC adapter until I could find out how to go about keeping the Private and the External separate. If someone from the Server Fault community can help with this since I am pretty new to this, I would be very grateful. Thanks everyone.

• How to stop S.M.A.R.T check running for external hard drive

  I am using Windows 7 and I have enabled my "S.M.A.R.T" check, too. I have bought an external 1 TB USB hard drive. When it is connected with my computer, it delays my machine initial start with about 4-5 minutes. I was very confused at the begging, then disable the "S.M.A.R.T" check and see that the computer runs normally after restart. So, here is what I want to know: Why the check is turn for the external disk? Is there a way to use the "S.M.A.R.T" check only for my main hard drive? Why it takes 4 to 5 minutes more, as my both hard drives - internal/external are 1 TB?

• Home-Router: Access internal server using external ip [migrated]

  If I've got a typical home router -- say a Net Gear -- which has certain ports forwarded to a internal server, is there a way to tweak the router to let me access that internal server using the external IP address from within the same network? Is there a non-enterprise grade router that can handle this type of thing? In case that was strangely worded, let me re-phrase with an example. My external IP is 1.2.3.4. My internal server is 10.4.3.100 Port 1178 is being forwarded from the router to 10.4.3.100. I'd like to be able to be able to hit 10.4.3.100 from an internal ip of 10.4.3.10 by using the external ip of 1.2.3.4. Possible?

  In postfix, I'm using relay_host to send an email to an external address using sendgrid, but I get an error about local ricipient table when sending an email from my PHP code. This is my main.cf in /postfix/ ## -- Sendgrid smtp_sasl_auth_enable = yes smtp_sasl_password_maps = static:username:password smtp_sasl_security_options = noanonymous smtp_tls_security_level = may header_size_limit = 4096000 relayhost = [smtp.sendgrid.net]:587 This is the error message from the log: postfix/smtpd[53598]: [ID 197553 mail.info] NOQUEUE: reject: RCPT from localhost[127.0.0.1]: 550 5.1.1 Recipient address rejected: User unknown in local recipient table; from=<[email protected]> to=<[email protected]> proto=ESMTP helo=<localhost.localdomain> One interesting thing is when I use "sendmail [email protected]" from the command line, the email is delivered successfully using SendGrid. I think it's because this uses postfix/smtp instead of postfix/smtpD the log for this says, postfix/smtp[18670]: [ID 197553 mail.info] AAF7313A7E: to=, relay=smtp.sendgrid.net[50.97.69.148]:587, delay=4.1, delays=3.5/0.02/0.44/0.18, dsn=2.0.0, status=sent (250 Delivery in progress) Thank you

• DKIM for email through Google Apps domain with external outbound relay

  I'd like to enable the new Domain Keys DKIM email authentication feature for a domain hosted in Google Apps. Some of my users use an external SMTP gateway (such that when they send email, it doesn't go through smtp.gmail.com). I have an SPF record configured for the domain, and this allows the external SMTP gateways as valid SMTP hosts. (I realise SPF is different to DKIM) Will enabling DKIM adversely affect the external gateway email? eg. Are the externally sent emails at risk of being marked as spam because they would not have the DKIM signature, or will DKIM only positively benefit emails sent through Google's SMTP server?

• Command line scripts to restore the 4 system databases of MS SQL Server 2008

  Hi there, can someone give me some advice on how to restore the 4 system databases (master, msdb, model, tempdb) of a sql server 2008 please? I've already done some testing myself (on restoring the master database) with the following commad line script as a result: ::set variables set dbname=master set dbdirectory=C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA title Restoring %dbname% database net stop mssqlserver cd C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Binn sqlservr -m sqlcmd -Slocalhost -E -Q "restore database master from disk='c:\master.bak' WITH REPLACE" net start mssqlserver pause After the execution of the 'sqlservr -m' command (used to start the server instance in single-user mode, which is only necessary when restoring the MASTER database), the script stops. So in order to execute the last 2 commands I need to separate the script into 2 smaller scripts, and run them one after the other. Does anyone has an idea on how I can merge them into one single script that runs completely without any interruption? I also want to restore the other 3 system databases using command line scripts like this one. Can someone please advice me how I need to go on? I've already noticed that restoring the temdb is not so easy, but there has to be a way... Looking forward to your advice!

• Use HDD enclosure as portable hard drive?

  Someone here suggested that i should use an external hdd enclosure since my pc doesnt support a 2nd hdd and i want to use my old hdd. I will be permanently plugging that hdd enclosure to my pc and someone said it isnt safe. I'm really concerned since i would be using that drive and i'll probably be always using it since i'd play the music files i have in there. Also, would it be ok if i use that enclosure as a portable external drive?

  I am trying to connect my ASUS VH242H (1920x1020), with my Macbook Pro. The laptop has a 320m nvidia and it should be more than enough to support an external display. I had my old laptop connected, (with a 9600mgt) and it worked fine.I am not mirroring the display I just want an extension ( if possible only the external display diplaying). • How to connect to a remote server and run some code on that particular server?

  I am implementing an automated backup scheme so I created a shell script which first creates SQL Dumps for all MySQL databases, then it retrieves all the websites from the /var/www of a remote server. The latter is working as I am using rsync to get the remote files. However, obviously, the MySQL dumps being retrieved are the ones on the local server which is not what I want. I want to get the SQL Dumps from the remote server as well. I have a tunnel between the local and remote server which I can connect without using any password (I added the public key to the authorized_hosts), so I tried to add the following code to the script: ssh [email protected] Then I tried to retrieve the SQL dumps and then I exit from the remote server. However this does not work as I still have to enter exit manually in the terminal for the SQL dumps to be retrieved from the remote host. I don't know why this is happening. Basically this is what the script is trying to do: //connect to remote server ssh [email protected] //retrieve SQL dumps //code to retrieve... //exit from remote server exit //use rsync to get remote files of /var/www from local server (working) Is there a way to connect to the remote host AND run the script's code ON THAT remote host? • scp vs netatalk, samba, and/or vsftpd with External USB drive

  I set up a ubuntu server machine to share an ext2 formatted external usb drive. When attempting to copy a single 275MB files from said device through netatalk, I get estimated download rates at around 45 min. With samba and ftp (using vsftpd) I get 1+ hours! Using scp to copy the file results in complete download within 5 minutes. Another option, ssh+cp from external device to ~ and then using netatalk to grab it from there results in a total time of arounf 7 minutes. Does anyone have a clue what is misconfigured? Assuming that nothing is, is there any fs/pseudo-fs that would use the internal hdd as an intermediate location/onion-layer for the external hdd (for reads only)? I do a lot of development work, i havent got a second monitor to test it yes but i know there can be problems. I would like to have a monitor connected on my VGA and on my HDMI so two external monitors and notebooks monitor. Would this be viable ?

It would be more convenient to plug the external drive in to a desktop PC, and then do the backup over the network. Is there a way to do this? • Shuttle FB51 mobo does not boot with external USB drive attached [closed]

  I am repurposing an old Alienware desktop as a home media server. The PC is based on the Shuttle FB51 motherboard. The BIOS is a Phoenix Version 6.00 PG, release date 12/16/2002. I have loaded Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on the internal hard drive. I am using a Western Digital WD Elements 1.5 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive for media storage. When the external drive is plugged in and the PC is powered on, it freezes very early in the BIOS self-test, even before it begins the memory test. If I unplug the drive, the self-test proceeds without further problems. I can plug the USB drive back in when the self-test is complete, and Ubuntu will boot and find the external drive normally. I've tried several changes to the BIOS setup without finding a cure for the boot issue. Any assistance gratefully accepted. JGB

• More advanced 'Apple Automator' like software?

  What I'm looking for is a program similar to Automator or A Better Finder Rename but more extensive / advanced. In my situation we have two files with the same name, one is a MOV the other an XML. We want to use some of the metadata within the XML to rename both files. Then we want to re-arrange the contents of the XML file so that it is compatible with another piece of software we use (I think this process is called mapping?) Essentially some software that takes a bunch of variable from existing file and performs file actions to them. I imagine this would be an easy task using apple-script, but I'm wondering if there is a OSX application similar to Automator that can do the above? Questions are: Is there software that can do the above? Could Automator achieve this? What is the technical name of this kind of process? If no such software exists, what would be the best kind of script to use? eg. Make an Apple Script, python script etc.

• iPad connection to external monitor

  Apple have been relatively restrictive in the way in which they have enabled the iPad to be connected to an external display i.e. only certain things like videos and images can be displayed in this way (via a converting lead). Does anyone know of a way to get around this? I.e. display any content on the iPad on an external display - not just the apps/content that Apple has designated? For example, I want to connect my iPad to an external monitor and create documents, viewing them on the monitor not the iPad display? Thanks in advance for any help.

• Exchange and external mail server

  Hi, We have our domain hosted externally with Network Solutions, and our mail server is running from there. We have a branch office in Bahrain and have 3 users who would like to use their email addresses on a local exchange server running at the Bahrain office. The Exchange server is currently only used for internal mail,contacts and calendaring. I've used a third=party program to download the POP3 mail to their exchange accounts. so they can receive mail from outside. The issue is in sending mail using their external addresses. I've setup their exchange accounts to include their external address. But we get an error message stating that the IP is not authorized. I tried putting the local ISP as the smart host, but then we get an error message stating that the Address was rejected. I tried using our own external mail server as the smart host, but then the message "Relaying is denied" comes up. Any suggestions? Thanks Arun

• Seagate 1TB 'EXPANSION' external hard drive, showing as BAD

  Hello! I have bough an external Seagate 1TB drive, which my XP system can see and will write files to, however when I use Partition Magic it describes the whole partition as BAD, and it is shown in yellow. All the options are greyed out. When I use Drive Image XML to try and copy drive to drive (I want a comlplete copy of my C drive including OS), I get an error message saying it can't lock the drive. The external drive is brand new and uses NTFS. Any ideas? Seagate 'support' haven't bothered getting back to me. Incidentally, I have another external drive (320GB), which uses FAT32 and Partition Magic sees that fine. I am doing a full format of the Seagate at the moment, to see if this helps. • What is the bash syntax to create a new directory in the directory above?

The mogrify command will resize images in a directory and put the resized images into a directory on the same directory level, with the same name as the work directory, but with a suffix (_a). The new directory will be moved to another collection later on. Something like this, #!/bin/bash mkdir ../n_a for file in *{.JPG|.jpg}; do mogrify -path ../n_a -resize 1200x1200 -quality 96;done I'm guessing ../ denotes the parent dir when working in a child directory, but I need help here. Edit: "n" needs to be replaced with the syntax for the working directory name. Sorry there was a typo as well third script line, should have read n not x Edit2: This script does exactly what I need and it's silent. #!/bin/bash DEST="../${PWD##*/}_a" mkdir -p $DEST mogrify -path $DEST -resize 1200x1200 -quality 96 *.jpg *.JPG thanks to vgoff for the correct PWD syntax and cesareriva http://www.cesareriva.com/archives/722 for showing me the DEST function. Something else: ${PWD##*/}_a is not caring for spaces in the directory name and the script fails. An empty dir is created in the same dir as the images. Found it out now, it needs quotations on the $DEST too, presumably to help mkdir create the dir with a space in the name, and mogrify to write the files to the right place, like this #!/bin/bash DEST="../${PWD##*/}_a" mkdir -p "$DEST" mogrify -path "$DEST" -resize 1200x1200 -quality 96 *.jpg *.JPG

  Dear friends, Please tell me whether it is possible for someone on the external network to see the network folder shares of an internal LAN network in DHCP (192.168.x.x) through a Comp-A on an external network in DHCP (123.123.x.x) both networks are on different subnets but Comp-A has access to both networks and can see all the shared drives of both the internal and external networks using firewall is not an option because file sharing is required everywhere. care is taken from viruses/trojans... remote desktop etc is disabled on Comp-A Please let me know. • Cannot Access Server from External IP (Router)

  We have an Ubuntu 10.04 LAMP server running on site (Apache is on port 80). It is running fine through the LAN, but I cannot access it using its external IP address through the Netopia 3000 Series modem by which it is connected to the internet. I have tried using what Netopia calls "Pinholes" (Port Forwarding) to make the server accessible, but a telnet to the external address just gives me "connect to address x.x.x.x: Operation timed out." I have also tried enabling "Services" and "IP Passthrough" on the router, but it gives the same result as above. How can I enable the server to be accessed through its external IP address? Because it connects fine locally, it would seem to be a problem with the Netopia router. Update: Booting the server in GUI mode instead of text mode solved the problem instantly. Any ideas why?

• Mounting external usb harddisk (ext4) in virtual box in windows

  I would like to mount my external linux formatted usb harddrive in a virtual machine. The host is windows 7. Unfortunately virtual box doesn't enumerate the external harddrive in the options menu of the virtual machine, even though it shows all other devices connected to the host. Windows can find the harddrive, but obviously just gives me the option to reformat it, because it doesn't support ext4. (ext2fsd or Ext2Read are no options, as I need newer ext4 features) How can I add a filter for my external harddrive so it is recognized by my virtual machine?

Ultimately, I just want to load Sizzle, then call any function that I need to (with any arguments that it needs) once it's done loading. Thanks for any help!

• Rackspace copy script failure message "java.net.SocketTimeoutException: Read timed out"

  I am using Rackspace for Ubuntu cloud server. Everyday a script(I guess the script is from rackspace) executes on the cloud servers which copies the backfile to the Rackspace CloudFiles and sends the mail as if the files are copied and I've scheduled the script on the cloud servers. I've no much knowledge of the script and I guess the script is based on Cruise(as I could see build.xml, some jar files ...). Everyday the files are copied to the Rackspace from cloud servers but sometimes don't know why, the files will be copied to Rackspace sending an error failure message or sometimes the files will not be copied and sends the error failure message like the one below. Error while backing up on Station1 on 03/03/2011 04:50 AM and reason for error is java.net.SocketTimeoutException: Read timed out Anybody using Rackspace?, anybody has any fix for this?

• PHP script timed out, or otherwise killed on Apache under CentOS (shared host)

  When trying to run a PHP script (CentOS, Apache, PHP 5.2), that may take a long time, it is apparently killed after 45 minutes. PHP script is invoked from a web browser, and in certain situations, it will do a lot of work processing a POP3 mailbox and sending emails as part of an automated monitoring system. Running the PHP script from the command line might be a better option, but I want to understand what is going on so far. I ran a test script, and it appeared to finally give an internal server error (500?) after 45 minutes. Where is this limit set and what is killing the script, if that is what is happening? It's running on a shared host on Hostgator.com.
