• Why does 1080p through a VGA cable fit my HDTV but is oversized when through an HDMI cable?

  I have put together a new PC with a XFX GeForce GTX 260 graphics card and have it connected to my HDTV. First, I used an old VGA cable with a DVI to VGA adapter and plugged it in to my HDTV's VGA port. Running at 1920x1080 it fit the screen perfectly. Now, to avoid running another cable across the room, I have connected it with a DVI to HDMI cable to my TV's HDMI port, and the desktop at 1920x1080 is cropped by the edge of the screen. I have "fixed" the cropping by using NVIDIA's "Adjust desktop size and position" tool, which created a screen resolution of 1814x1022 to fit the screen, but this is no longer the TV's native resolution and confuses some software (e.g. WoW). Why does VGA work as expected, but HDMI is scaled up? Can it be avoided?

• SSH tunnel RDP through gateway server outside the network?

  I need to access a PC via RDP that is behind a firewall. There's no way to connect to it directly that I know of. What I'd like to do is SSH from that remote PC to my home Ubuntu server, then connect to the remote PC using my home PC with the Ubuntu server as a gateway. I've tried SSH from remote PC to Ubuntu server, tunneling remote port 3389 to 127.0.0.1:3389, then SSH from home PC to Ubuntu server, tunneling local port 13389 to remote port 3389. At that point I try to RDP into: 127.0.0.1:13389, 127.0.0.2:13389, :3389 - no dice. I suppose I could simply set up an SSH server on my home PC and SSH from remote PC into home PC and then establish the tunnel that way, but I'd rather not go through the hassle of installing and configuring an ssh server on my home PC. I know LogMeIn would work here, but I don't want to go that route for various reasons. Any ideas? Thanks!

  I have two monitors, a PC that uses both of them, and a MAC laptop. The dilemma in my mind is how to keep the two monitor state in the PC active, while still being able to switch one monitor to the laptop's output. Is this even possible? I figure as soon as output is switched, my PC will detect a monitor has been unplugged, and will switch to a one-monitor state. The ideal would be to have a switch that switches from the PC two monitor output state to one where one monitor is being used by the MAC. Thanks for any help, Dane

  When using PDAnet on a PC (Win7 ultimate) to USB tether a Motorola Droid on Verizon 3G the IP address of the PC appears to be public - 64.245.171.115 (64-245-171-115.pools.spcsdns.net) - but connections show as coming from another public IP - 97.14.69.212 (212-sub-97.14.69.myvzw.com). Someone is performing Network Address Translation - either PDAnet or within the Verizon 3G network. Can someone tell me who is doing the NAT? Is it PDAnet or is it at Verizon? Is there any possibility of setting up port forwarding, such that connections to the public IP 97.14.69.212 (212-sub-97.14.69.myvzw.com) are forward to the PC? We are testing a network protocol that requires either a true public IP or forwarding a range of ports from the public Internet to the system on which the software runs (actually Linux hosted by VMware Player or Workstation on a PC running Windows).

  I'm not much of a network and network security expert, but I need to add an existing Windows PC to a network with always on connection. The problem is, I have no idea if the PC is really clean, and, actually, no knowledge to check it. I scanned the PC with Process Explorer to verify if all running processes are signed, ran an AVG scan, but this is where my knowledge ends. IIRC, there can be bad code attached to svchost or something, bad drivers, and so on, but I have no idea how to check all those things. Reformatting the PC is unfeasible as of now. Are there any suggestions on what I could do?

  I have a USB internet connection which I plugged into my laptop. I converted my laptop's Wifi into a Wifi router so that I can attach my PC and cell to this network and enjoy internet, but it doesn't work. I have a Dell Inspiron N5110 i7 Windows 7 64-bit laptop, Dell D865 PC and Nokia C5. My PC and cell are showing that there is a new Wifi connection available, but when I connect to it, it won't load any web page. Reason is my laptop's Wifi is not emitting any internet signals or may be some other issue which i dont know.. laptop's adapter is 802.11b/g/n I don't know why. How can I enjoy Wifi internet on laptop, PC and cell at the same time?

  so I have been learning java from Deitel's learn java 9th edition. I am up to GUI's and a have a pretty good grasp on OOP etc. I want to go straight to the mobile app development scene, I believe I will learn a fair bit there on using API's, and other tools to develop apps. I am not sure weather I should carry on with PC coding (GUI's etc etc) or skip it all and go direct to learning the Android SDK. So, should I carry on, learn about sockets, writing and reading files, GUI's for PC etc or get a book and jump into android? Thanks a lot guys.

My computer satisfied all the minimum system requirements it required. After installing the Card in PCI Express Slot I started the computer. But it now hangs at the POST screen i.e.(the first screen when the PC loads). It hangs at Checking NVRAM. I had checked the graphic card on other PC and its works perfectly. So I think there's no problem in the Graphic card. If I remove my graphic card and run my PC with built in Graphic card, my PC works and doesn't hang. So, what can be the problem?   Hi Is there any (ideally open source) software for Windows that can be used on a PC, to monitor the usage of internet from that PC? It would need to include both browser and non-browser sources (e.g. a service that sync's calendar to gmail). So any software on your PC that uses would need to be configured to point to this local internet monitoring software/proxy. The monitoring software/proxy then would be configured to point to the company proxy server (address, port & credentials). Things that come to mind that might be close but not really focused on solving this might be perhaps: Charles Proxy, Fiddler 2, SQUID? The idea would be it could give you a daily/weekly/monthly report of internet upload/download usage on a per program/process/service basis for the PC it is being run on. thanks

• Any reasonable UPS for a Desktop PC, just to shut it down?

  While I do have a surge protector to protect against overvoltage (hopefully), I have nothing against undervoltage. When a lightning storm hits, I had the lights flickering at some point. The PC continued to run, but it got me thinking of getting a UPS as a way to a) have a clean 120V/60Hz power source and b) have a way to shut down the PC in case something bad happens. I heard not all UPS' protect against power spikes, so I wonder if someone has a recommendation? It does not need to keep the PC on for a long time if the power goes out, it's good enough if it shuts down the PC after 5 minutes or so. There are 2 PCs connected. One is a Core i7-860 with a Radeon 5870 running Windows 7 Ultimate (so quite power hungry. It uses a 600W PSU but I have no measurements of the actual usage), the other one is a Windoes Home Server, running WHS/Windows Server 2003. Any recommendations in the low-price segment?

  I need to try Linux (Ubuntu) and feel hesitant to install Ubuntu on top of a Win 7 machine to dual boot (might need to use Win7 and Ubuntu at the same time). Is creating a Virtual PC on Win7, and then install the latest Ubuntu on that Virtual PC one of the better option? So I think I can create a Virtual PC with an empty virtual hard disk (vhd), say, for 30GB, and then put in the Ubuntu DVD-R or CD-R to install Ubuntu onto that empty hard disk.

And now I wonder what I could do with such a piece of crappy hardware and would be pleased to get a good answer. It's one thing if you code your app that could run on almost any pc (or webbrowser) but another if you got an own hardware platform which you could extend or more generally customize the way you like.   I have ubuntu 11.10 64bit, everything worked fine but after i uninstalled the airtime dj app i can't restart or shutdown my pc !! The only way to reach at the screen showing that system is going to shutdown is via terminal but it stucks and never shuts down ! I can't even restart it ! I can suspend my pc fine but can't shutdown or restart it. Need to keep the power button pressed for a long time to shut it down ! Do i have to look for a shutdown script and find out what is happening ?? I'm very unhappy with this it gives to my nerves.

Working with the PC while I'm actually at work isn't too bad, but when I try to interact with it over the remote desktop, it is VERY slow to respond. Even simple typing can be slow, but screen painting and response time is painfully obvious. Any suggestions to help speed it up?

  I would like to 'shrink-to-fit' an std::vector, to reduce its capacity to its exact size, so that additional memory is freed. The standard trick seems to be the one described here: template< typename T, class Allocator > void shrink_capacity(std::vector<T,Allocator>& v) { std::vector<T,Allocator>(v.begin(),v.end()).swap(v); } The whole point of shrink-to-fit is to save memory, but doesn't this method first create a deep copy and then swaps the instances? So at some point -- when the copy is constructed -- the memory usage is doubled? If that is the case, is there a more memory-friendly method of shrink-to-fit? (In my case the vector is really big and I cannot afford to have both the original plus a copy of it in memory at any time.)
