  • What SDK I should choose on Amazon Web Service to build API on server app?

    I am a newbie on Amazon Web Service. I have a task that setup then build a web service that provide APIs to Mac OS, iOS, Android client. There are some APIs and Database need to be kept in secure. I see that AWS support multiple platform such as Java, .Net, PHP,... It also support many Database Management System. Not yet, there are 2 special SDK for Android and iOS app. So, What should I choose (Java, .Net, PHP,...) to carry out my task? Does AWS support all webservice protocol? Does it support secure webservice? Thanks a lot.

  • Is it possible to choose the Amazon Glacier Vault when backing up from Synology NAS?

    I am using Amazon Glacier Backup on a Synology NAS (rackstation). But the Synology backup software for glacier does not allow me to choose the vault to backup to. This means I can not give my own name to the vault, but also I can not backup to a previously created vault (I also have this problem now after replacing a Synology rackstation). Is there any way to choose to which vault you want your Synology to backup to? Edit: I have now posted this question to the Synology forum also: http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?f=174&t=86557&e=0 If I can solve the problem I'll post the solutions here also.

  • How do I start DB2 on an Amazon EC2 Volume?

    I've got an instance of DB2 installed as part of an IBM WebSphere Portal development AMI on the Amazon EC2 cloud. Its installed a separate, persistent file system from the rest of the AMI. Yesterday, the AMI was terminated, and DB2 went down as part of that. It was not shut down cleanly, just terminated. Today, I am trying to restart the WebSphere portal server, which needs to connect to the DB2 instance. But the DB2 instance is down. So I need to restart my DB2 instance, but how to do that is not immediately obvious. Can someone tell me what I need to run to get it going again? OS is SuSE Linux, DB2 version is 9.1

  • Strange behavior from Firefox and Paypal Plugin

    Ok, so I use the paypal plugin with firefox, which is really nice because you can generate single use credit-cards on the fly. However, recently it's been acting strange. Normally, when you use the plugin, a drop-down window open in firefox. However, at some point (I'm not sure exactly when it happened, because I thought it wasn't working for a while) the drop-down window started appearing in thunderbird. As in, I click on the plugin button in firefox, and the plugin window immediately opens in Thunderbird. If Thunderbird is closed, the plugin does not open at all. I can use it normally this way (everything works except the receipt-saving function). but the whole affair seems a little odd to me. Is there any reason that could cause things to be redirected from one mozilla-application-window to another mozilla-application-window? Everything is up to date: Firefox 3.6.3 Thunderbird 3.0.5 Paypal Plugin 2.2.26.0

  • How do I create an ami for openSUSE in Amazon ec2?

    I need to scale some services from local servers to Amazon ec2. The current production-environment is based on the latest openSUSE. In order to keep things simple, I want to run the instances in ec2 in the same environment. However, I'm unable to find any public SUSE ami's or even howto's on this subject. I've seen a few similar questions in different forums, without any resolutions. So actually, I have two questions. 1) Is this at all doable? 2) If, so, is there any documentation / howto's available somewhere? Jarle

  • Why hasn't anyone made a way for TimeMachine to wirelessly backup to Amazon S3?

    Seriously. I'm looking at you, Apple. If TimeMachine is supposed to be 'simple backup that just works' why is it impossible to backup into my S3 filespace? Why hasn't some 3rd party developer (JungleDrive???) made it so that TimeMachine will be OK with backing up to amazon s3 storage? It just seems like the most convenient, robust answer. I'd gladly pay the $20-25 a month for complete, unlosable backups that I can sync with wirelessly on a proper scheme.

  • Where can I find free and open data?

    Sooner or later, coders will feel the need to have access to "open data" in one of their projects, from knowing a city's zip to a more obscure information such as the axial tilt of Pluto. I know data.un.org which offers access to the UN's extensive array of databases that deal with human development and other socio-economic issues. The other usual suspects are NASA and the USGS for planetary data. There's an article at readwriteweb with more links. infochimps.org seems to stand out. Personally, I need to find historic commodity prices, stock values and other financial data. All these data sets seem to cost money however. Clarification To clarify, I'm interested in all kinds of open data, because sooner or later, I know I will be in a situation where I could need it. I will try to edit this answer and include the suggestions in a structured manners. A link for financial data was hidden in that readwriteweb article, doh! It's called opentick.com. Looks good so far! Update I stumbled over semantic data in another question of mine on here. There is opencyc ('the world's largest and most complete general knowledge base and commonsense reasoning engine'). A project called UMBEL provides a light-weight, distilled version of opencyc. Umbel has semantic data in rdf/owl/skos n3 syntax. The Worldbank also released a very nice API. It offers data from the last 50 years for about 200 countries

  • Theory of computation - Using the pumping lemma for context free languages

    I'm reviewing my notes for my course on theory of computation and I'm having trouble understanding how to complete a certain proof. Here is the question: A = {0^n 1^m 0^n | n>=1, m>=1} Prove that A is not regular. It's pretty obvious that the pumping lemma has to be used for this. So, we have |vy| = 1 |vxy| <= p (p being the pumping length, = 1) uv^ixy^iz exists in A for all i = 0 Trying to think of the correct string to choose seems a bit iffy for this. I was thinking 0^p 1^q 0^p, but I don't know if I can obscurely make a q, and since there is no bound on u, this could make things unruly.. So, how would one go about this?

I currently have the need for some type of "green checkmark image", and I always seem to be looking for print, save, delete types of icons... Anybody have good resources?     I'm working on a Facebook app for book sharing, reviewing, and recommendations. I've scoured the web, searched Google using every search phrase I could think of, but I could not find any tutorials on how to access the Amazon.com API for book information. I signed up for an AWS account, but even the tutorials on their website didn't help me one bit. They're all geared toward using cloud computing for file storage and processing, but that's not what I want. I just want to access their API to search info on books. Kind of like how http://openlibrary.org/ does it, where it's a simple URL call to get information on a book (but their databases aren't nearly as populated as Amazon's). Why is it so damned hard to find the information I need on Amazon's AWS site? If anybody could help, I would greatly appreciate it.

  • Large free block of english non-pronoun text

    As part of teaching myself python I've written a script which allows a user to play hangman. At the moment, the hangman word to be guessed is simply entered manually at the start of the script's code. I want instead for the script to choose randomly from a large list of english words. This I know how to do - my problem is finding that list of words to work from in the first place. Does anyone know of a source on the net for, say, 1000 common english words where they can be downloaded as a block of text or something similar that I can work with? (My initial thought was grabbing a chunk of a novel from project gutenburg [this project is only for my own amusement and won't be available anywhere else so copyright etc doesn't matter hugely to me btw], but anything like that is likely to contain too many names or non-standard words that wouldn't be suitable for hangman. I need text that only has words legal for use in scrabble, basically). It's a slightly odd question for here I suppose, but actually I thought the answer might be of use not just to me but anyone else working on a project for a wordgame or similar that needs a large seed list of words to work from.     Does anyone know of a library out there (preferably in C#) that will take classes and generate XML or flat files suitable for feeds to Amazon Marketplace Web Services? In other words, I'd like to do something like this: var feed = new AmazonProductFeed(); var list = new AmazonProductList(); var product1 = new AmazonProduct(); product1.Name = "Product 1"; list.Add(product1); var product2 = new AmazonProduct(); product2.Name = "Product 2"; list.Add(product2); feed.Products = list; // spits out XML compliant with Amazon's schema Console.Write(feed.ToXml()); It looks like the only code Amazon provides are wrappers for the web service itself and the directory-based transport utility (AMTU).

  • Force.com presents Database.com SQL Azure/Amazon RDS unfazed

    At the DreamForce 2010 event in San Francisco Force.com unveiled their next big thing in the Fat SaaS portfolio "Database.com".  I am still wondering how would they would've shelled out for that domain name. Now why would a already established SaaS player foray into a key building block like Database? Potentially allowing enterprises to build apps that do not utilize the Force.com stack! One key reason is being seen as the Fat SaaS player with evey trick in the SaaS space under his belt. You want CRM come hither, want a custom development PaaS like solution welcome home (VMForce), want all your apps to talk to a cloud DB and minimize latency by having it reside closer to you cloud apps? You've come to the right place sire! Other is potentially killing foray of smaller DB players like Oracle (Not surprisingly, the Database.com offering is a highly customized and scalable Oracle database) from entering the lucrative SaaS db marketplace. The feature set promised looks great out of the box for someone who likes to visualize cool new architectures. The ground realities are certainly going to be a lot different considering the SOAP/REST style access patterns in lieu of the comfortable old shoe of SQL. Microsoft suffered heavily with SDS (SQL Data Services) offering in early 2009 and had to pull the plug on the product only to reintroduce as a simple SQL Server in the cloud, SQL Windows Azure. Though MSFT is playing cool by providing OData semantics to work with SQL Windows Azure satisfying atleast some needs of the Web-Style to a DB. The other features like Social data models including Profiles, Status updates, feeds seem interesting as well. (Although I beleive social is just one of the aspects of large scale collaborative computing). All these features start "Free" for devs its a good news but the good news stops here. The overall pricing model of $ per Users per Transactions / Month is highly disproportionate compared to Amazon RDS (Based on MySQL) or SQL Windows Azure (Based on MSSQL). Roger Jennigs of Oakleaf did an interesting comparo based on 3, 10, 100, 500 users and it turns out that Database.com going by current understanding is way too expensive for the services on offer. The offering may not impact the decision for DotNet shops mulling their cloud stategy or even some Java/MySQL shops thinking about Amazon RDS, however for enterprises having already invested in other force.com offerings this could be a very important piece in the cloud strategy jigsaw. One which would address a key cloud DB issue of "Latency" for them at least it will help having the DB in the neighborhood. The tooling and "SQL like" access provider drivers (Think ODBC/JDBC) will be available later this year. Progress Software has already announced their JDBC driver stack for Database.com. It remains to be seen how effective the overall solutions proves to be in the longer run but for starts its a important decision towards consolidating Force.com's already strong positioning in the SaaS space. As always contrasting views are welcome! :)

    I just found that David Aiken, a windows azure developer and evangelist, wrote a cool article about how to use Memcached in Windows Azure through the new feature Azure Plugin. http://www.davidaiken.com/2011/01/11/windows-azure-memcached-plugin/ I think the best solution for distributed cache in Azure would be the Windows Azure AppFabric Caching but since it’s only in CTP and avaiable in the US data center David’s solution would be the best. Only one thing I’m concerning about, is the stability of windows verion Memcached.
