  • how to start writing a very simple programming language

    Recently, I was going around looking for ideas on what I can build using C this summer and I came across this post: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1257376/interesting-project-to-learn-c Implement a programming language. This doesn't have to be terribly hard - I did the language that must not be named - but it will force you to learn a lot of the important parts of C. If you don't want to write a lexer and/or parser yourself, you can use lex/flex and yacc/bison, but if you plan on that you might want to start with a somewhat smaller project. I was kinda intrigued about the implementing a programming language answer and I'm wondering how do I go about starting this? I've gone through the whole K&R book and I've done some of the exercises as well. I also have a bit of experience in C++ and Java if that matters. Any tips? Thanks!

I learned programming with Java and now I'm developing in Java for more or less 5 years (at the university) and I thinks my programming skills their are really ok/average. I have also small experience in C/C++ and C#. Now I have some spare time and I'd like to learn a new language or deepen the knowledge of Java/C/C++. But how to choose the right language to learn? I'd like to learn a language which will be usefull in the future concerning working in a software development business? I know there is no single answer, but I'm sure you could mention some languages that are more usefull than others.

  • A server-side language to Learn

    I'm a graphic designer, with experience in print design. In fact, I'm working on digital prepress since 4 years ago. I'm doing a course on web design right now, although I have been studying it on my own for a while, online. So, my question is, what kind of server-side language do I need to learn? I'm feel comfortable with HTML, CSS, and Javascript, even with preprocessors like SASS and LESS, but server-side scripting becomes a nightmare to me. So, what kind of language is necessary to learn?   • Language D compared to C++?

    Anyone here with experience of the language D? I was just reading through its presentation at http://www.d-programming-language.org/ and at Wikipedia and it seems like a good (better) alternative to C++. With good/better I mean that it seem simpler yet it has all the good stuff within C/C++. But without some of the difficulties that make C++ more difficult to learn and use in a good and efficient way. So anyone with comments/experience with the language D? Performance?

  • Setting language/culture for reporting services report rendered through C#

    I have written a report renderer in C# that runs and attaches reports to an email. This is all working great, except the date format of the parameters are incorrect when listed in the report title. All the reports have their language set to =User!Language and the parameters are output using the FormatDateTime function to format according to the user's regional settings. I am basically using the rendering method described here on MSDN. This all works great when the reports are run through the browser. However, when I render the report from C# it uses en-US date format. The report server's regional settings are set appropriately to the correct region as are the regional settings of the computer the C# progam is running on.. What property do I need to set in my C# program for the report to be rendered using my appropriate language/culture?

  • Determining the maximum stack depth

    Imagine I have a stack-based toy language that comes with the operations Push, Pop, Jump and If. I have a program and its input is the toy language. For instance I get the sequence Push 1 Push 1 Pop Pop In that case the maximum stack would be 2. A more complicated example would use branches. Push 1 Push true If .success Pop Jump .continue .success: Push 1 Push 1 Pop Pop Pop .continue: In this case the maximum stack would be 3. However it is not possible to get the maximum stack by walking top to bottom as shown in this case since it would result in a stack-underflow error actually. CFGs to the rescue you can build a graph and walk every possible path of the basic blocks you have. However since the number of paths can grow quickly for n vertices you get (n-1)! possible paths. My current approach is to simplify the graph as much as possible and to have less possible paths. This works but I would consider it ugly. Is there a better (read: faster) way to attack this problem? I am fine if the algorithm produces a stack depth that is not optimal. If the correct stack size is m then my only constraint is that the result n is n = m. Is there maybe a greedy algorithm available that would produce a good result here?

I tried searching to know about it in details but almost all searches end up at things like PHPUnit. Could someone please put some light on the theory behind automated tests?   • An approximate algorithm for finding Steiner Forest.

    Hello. Consider a weighted graph G=(V,E,w). We are given a family of subsets of vertices V_i. Those sets of vertices are not necessarily disjoint. A Steiner Forest is a forest that for each subset of vertices V_i connects all of the vertices in this subset with a tree. Example: only one subset V_1 = V. In this case a Steiner forest is a spanning tree of the whole graph. Enough theory. Finding such a forest with minimal weight is difficult (NP-complete). Do you know any quicker approximate algorithm to find such a forest with non-optimal weight?

    Whilst doing exam revision I am having trouble answering the following question from the book, "An Introduction to the Theory of Computation" by Sipser. Unfortunately there's no solution to this question in the book. Explain why the following is not a legitimate Turing machine. M = { The input is a polynomial p over variables x1, ..., xn Try all possible settings of x1, ..., xn to integer values Evaluate p on all of these settings If any of these settings evaluates to 0, accept; otherwise reject. } This is driving me crazy! I suspect it is because the set of integers is infinite? Does this somehow exceed the alphabet's allowable size? Thanks!

    While reading through some lecture notes on preliminary number theory, I came across the solution to water jug problem (with two jugs) which is summed as thus: Using the property of the G.C.D of two numbers that GCD(a,b) is the smallest possible linear combination of a and b, and hence a certain quantity Q is only measurable by the 2 jugs, iff Q is a n*GCD(a,b), since Q=sA + tB, where: n = a positive integer A = capacity of jug A B= capacity of jug B And, then the method to the solution is discussed Another model of the solution is to model the various states as a state-space search problem as often resorted to in Artificial Intelligence. My question is: What other known methods exist which models the solution, and how? Google didn't throw up much.

  • Is it a solvable problem to generate a regular expression that matches some input set?

    I provide some input set which contains known separated number of text blocks. I want to make a program that automatically generate 1 or more regular expressions each of which matches every text block in the input set. I see some relatively easy ways to implement a brute-force search. But I'm not an expert in compilers theory. That's why I'm curious: 1) is this problem solvable? or there are some principle impossibility to make such algorithm? 2) is it possible to achieve polynomial complexity for this algorithm and avoid brute forcing?

  • Normalized Device Coordinates to window coordinates

    I just read some stuff about the theory behind 3d graphics. As I understand it, normalized device coordinates (NDC) are coordinates that describe a point in the interval from -1 to 1 on both the horizontal and vertical axis. On the other hand window coordinates describe a point somewhere between (0,0) and (width,height) of the window. So my formula to convert a point from the NDC coordinate system to the window system would be xwin = width + xndc * 0.5 * width ywin = height + ynfv * 0.5 * height The problem now is that in the OpenGL documentation for glViewport there is an other formula: xwin = ( xndc + 1 ) * width * 0.5 + x ywin = ( yndc + 1 ) * height * 0.5 + y Now I'm wondering what I am getting wrong. Especially I'm wondering what the additional "x" and "y" mean. Hope the question isn't too "not programming related", but I thought somehow it is related to graphics programming.

  • Why does Windows 7 always automatically change the input or keyboard language?

    I am wondering why Windows 7 always automatically changes my input or keyboard language. I've a notebook with an integrated QWERTY keyboard English (United States). Traveling, I use that one but, additionally, I've my own as well as a much better keyboard at home which is a QWERTZ keyboard German (Germany). Thus, being at home, I'd like to use my QWERTZ keyboard. Unfortunately, Windows 7 does not play along at this one. Every time, I start up my notebook, it is usually set to English (United States) but that's not the problem. In case, I'd use my notebook QWERTY keyboard English (United States), that's fine. However, if I start up my notebook and I'd like to use my QWERTZ keyboard German (Germany), I usually press ALT + Left Shift in order to switch from English (United States) to German (Germany) and Windows 7 switches the input language but only for the program that is currently open. If my input language is set to German (Germany) and I, e.g., open NotePad, Windows 7 automatically switches my input language to English (United States). This is very annoying since I've to change the input or keyboard language to German (Germany) every time I open up a new program. Why doesn't Windows 7 stay with one input language if I changed it manually by pressing ALT + Left Shift? Why doesn't the manual change of the input or keyboard language apply for the whole Windows 7? Why does it only affect the currently opened program? Since I've two keyboards with two different layouts, I seriously need to have both of the keyboards languages installed. I tried both of the below settings in order to find a solution for my problem. Currently, I am using the first option, two input languages.   • In what URL segment do you have language? /en/admin/dashboard or /admin/en/dashboard?

    maybe you are thinking that this is another dump question about language in URL, but I hope it is not! I've red many articles on this, but non of them was dealing with "sections of site" (described bellow). I am programming a new application platform in laravel/php and I am still not 100% convinced where to put language slug. There are many places where you can put it - some of them are better some are worse: example.com/en/article en.example.com/article example.com/article?lang=en My personal choice is to put language after the domain - so the first option in above list. But what if you are in some special secion like admin or api? where do you put language then? example.com/en/admin/dashboard example.com/en/api/v1/user/login or example.com/admin/en/dashboard example.com/api/v1/en/user/login (in frontend it is left the same: example.com/en/some-article) what do you preffer? what are cons and pros? One thing is using language in first segments is far more easier to programm than when it have some variants... P.S. whould you recoment using only en, cs or do it in full power with cz-CZ, en-US ? thanks for any thoughts! J.

Speed is critical. The application will primarily receive these inputs (about a few kb each) and will have to address each of them via the database lookup. Only a few kb will be returned.     Do we have multiple language support with Wireshark. We are using Windows Xp SP2 and Ubuntu Linux environment. Actually we have a plugin which is UDP based and we have a requirement to Analyse the Information in Packet List Pane and Packet Details Pane to be viewed in other languages like French, German, Italian etc ... So is it possible with Wireshark version - 1.2.0. For e.g. Can we also have all the Menu Items etc ... all text in Wireshark which is there in English to be seen in French, German and Italian.

  • Choosing a non microsoft language for web development?

    I am resonably experienced with asp.net and would like to learn a new language with a focus on web development. Licensing and hosting costs are why I would like to use something not reliant on microsoft so something based on open source technologies is a plus. I have had a tiny bit of experience with php and did not like it but I guess I could be convinced otherwise. Basically I'd like to know peoples opinion on the the best language for future web development with regards to longivity, resources, frameworks, hosting etc.
