Can anyone help ?

  • How to troubleshoot ethernet port on laptop

    - by Psallas Vassilios
I have a problem with my wired connection. To be more specific, my laptop doesn't seems to recognize that I have plugged in an ethernet cable. I tried to download new drivers for my ethernet card, but I couldn't find any solutions. Maybe because I am new to Linux, so I'm not familiar with running commands in the terminal. OK I have typed the command and here are the results: 00:04.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 191 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter [1039:0191] (rev 02) For the second reply I don't know if the following is what you asked me: ?Memory: 3.9 GiB ?Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo CPU P8800 @ 2.66GHz × 2 ?OS type: 32-bit My Ethernet connection had some problem on Windows too. I have changed recently my internet provider, and since then my ethernet cable is not recognized by the laptop. At that time I was still on Windows. I thought that with Ubuntu the problem would be solved, but unfortunately the problem still persists. If someone can help me to solve my problem I'll be thankful. Here are the results of the three first commands you told me to run: lsmod | grep sis190 sis190 22570 0 sudo modprobe sis190 ifconfig eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:90:f5:90:81:7e UP BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B) lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:185 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:185 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:22672 (22.6 KB) TX bytes:22672 (22.6 KB) wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:25:d3:2c:3a:ae inet addr:192.168.1.72 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 inet6 addr: fe80::225:d3ff:fe2c:3aae/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:260 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:363 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:71992 (71.9 KB) TX bytes:52000 (52.0 KB) and the results of running the last two commands: dmesg | grep -e eth -e sis190 [ 0.816667] sis190: sis190 Gigabit Ethernet driver 1.4 loaded [ 0.816728] sis190 0000:00:04.0: setting latency timer to 64 [ 0.816751] sis190: 0000:00:04.0: Read MAC address from EEPROM [ 0.904032] sis190: 0000:00:04.0: Realtek PHY RTL8201 transceiver at address [ 1.416030] sis190: 0000:00:04.0: Using transceiver at address 1 as default [ 1.448235] sis190 0000:00:04.0: eth0: 0000:00:04.0: SiS 191 PCI Gigabit Ethernet adapter at f8410000 (IRQ: 19), 00:90:f5:90:81:7e [ 1.448238] sis190 0000:00:04.0: eth0: GMII mode. • Using only password to authenticate user (no "username" field)

    - by Guy
I am creating a client access system, to allow manage invoices, make payments, access information about their products and information/functionality alike. Supposedly there are less than 1000 clients. Would there be any security threat to use only password (UUID v4 strings) to authenticate user? My thoughts: There is virtually no probability of collision or success with brute-force attack. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UUID#Random%5FUUID%5Fprobability%5Fof%5Fduplicates User friendly (one click go) It is not intended to be remembered

  • Why is Ubuntu 12.04 taking very long to start and run programs?

    - by Anna
I have a Toshiba laptop with 2.8 gb of ram, 1.87x2 GHz processor, and Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit on it as a partition installed with wubi. It takes 5-10 mins to start up, and opening any program (such as Chromium, Chrome, Skype, Firefox, Thundermail, etc) takes over half a minute. I stopped using Unity because my graphic card couldn't handle it and swapped over to Cinnamon. It's a little better, but everything is still really really slow. Any suggestions/solutions?

  • Touch pad 2 finger scroll not working

    - by user31984
I purchased a new Samsung Series 7 laptop, Model: 700Z5B to be exact. I have everything working great using Ubuntu 11.10, the only issue is that the 2 finger scroll on the track pad does not work. Does anyone have any pointers for what I need to do to configure it. I've looked around on the forums and have not found anything that has worked yet. I don't even see the trackpad options under the mouse and touchpad settings area.

  • switch HDD in laptop

    - by jolly
the internal hard drive that I have right now in my laptop is coming near its death, clicking for life, so I decided to buy a new HDD. However, I don't want to spend two weeks setting up my system to fit me as it does right now, so I thought that I can make just a hard copy of all the contents to the new disk (using dd). My question is: is it going to work? :-) What are the things that need to be changed, except fstab?

  • For Real XO Laptop Impact, We Need Infrastructure

<b>OLPC news:</b> "I was in the Peace Corps in Cape Verde as an ICT volunteer from 2006 to 2008, and while I was there, the One Laptop Per Child project came on my radar and I became pretty enamored of the prospect of bringing some XOs to the country, or at least raising awareness of the idea within the government."

  • Automatically change resolution when not in dock

    - by jwir3
I have Ubuntu 11.04 (yep, I know it's old news) on my Lenovo W520. At home, I have a dock with dual monitors. I have a pretty decent setup - things work almost perfectly (hence the reason I'm reluctant to upgrade... that and I'm not 100% sold on Unity). Anyway, the only annoyance I have is that when I'm on travel, I use the laptop screen. When I un-dock the laptop, I need to manually go into nvidia x-server settings and change the resolution from 'Auto' to 1920x1200, or it will think I have two screens, and my mouse pointer will be able to go way off the left side of the screen. This isn't a big deal, but I need to do it every time I restart the x-server (so if I reboot, or have to kill it, etc...) What would be really nice is if there was a way for it to automatically detect whether or not there is external monitors (which it seems to do already), and switch into the mode I select, depending on which monitors are connected. Is there any way to accomplish this? I've posted my xorg.conf file for reference. # nvidia-settings: X configuration file generated by nvidia-settings # nvidia-settings: version 270.29 (buildd@allspice) Fri Feb 25 14:42:07 UTC 2011 # nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig # nvidia-xconfig: version 275.19 ([email protected]) Tue Jul 12 18:35:38 PDT 2011 #Section "Monitor" # Identifier "Monitor1" # VendorName "Lenovo" # ModelName "ThinkpadLCD" # #HorizSync 28.0 - 33.0 # #VertRefresh 43.0 - 72.0 # #Option "DPMS" #EndSection Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "Layout0" Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0 InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard" InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer" Option "Xinerama" "0" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse0" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "auto" Option "Device" "/dev/psaux" Option "Emulate3Buttons" "no" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" EndSection Section "InputDevice" # generated from default Identifier "Keyboard0" Driver "kbd" EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "Monitor0" VendorName "Unknown" ModelName "DELL U2410" HorizSync 30.0 - 81.0 VertRefresh 56.0 - 76.0 Option "DPMS" EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "Device0" Driver "nvidia" VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation" BoardName "Quadro 1000M" Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1" EndSection Section "Screen" # Removed Option "metamodes" "DFP-0: nvidia-auto-select +0+120, DFP-6: nvidia-auto-select +1920+0" # Removed Option "metamodes" "DFP-0: nvidia-auto-select +0+120, DFP-5: nvidia-auto-select +1920+0" # Removed Option "metamodes" "DFP-0: nvidia-auto-select +1920+419, DFP-5: nvidia-auto-select +3840+0, DFP-6: nvidia-auto-select +0+0" # Removed Option "metamodes" "DFP-5: nvidia-auto-select +0+0, DFP-6: 1920x1200 +1920+0" Identifier "Screen0" Device "Device0" Monitor "Monitor0" DefaultDepth 24 Option "NoLogo" "True" Option "TwinViewXineramaInfoOrder" "DFP-0" Option "TwinView" "1" Option "metamodes" "DFP-5: nvidia-auto-select +1920+0, DFP-6: 1920x1200 +0+0" SubSection "Display" Depth 24 EndSubSection EndSection

I've just installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my new Asus N56V Laptop. I used to option to install it alogside with windows, and dedicated ~90Gb to it, but everytime I boot my computer, it loads Windows straight ahead, I don't really have the option to select between the both OS. I've heard that it is some problem realated with UEFI, or somehing like that, but the problem is that I don't really understand a lot of Linux... Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Live CD works OK. Is it OK to assume a new install will work?

    - by ign
I've got a Toshiba a505 laptop and tried the live CD with great results. However, I haven't found any reports on this PC working 100% OK on Ubuntu 10.10 yet. I do have seen (and tried installing myself) some reports that 10.04 didn't work (without some dirty hacking). In regular circumstances, is it OK to assume that a new install will work if the live CD works? Are there any tools I can run to check compatibility? Thanks!

  • How do I set up one time password authentication?

    - by scraimer
I have a home network which I access remotely quite a bit. But I'm worried about security. While I do have strong passwords, I'm worried that someone will acquire my password and use it to gain access. I heard about "one time passwords" and even got to use them at my university. We'd just press a button on a device (or run an application on a phone) and get a generated password that would work for the next minute or so. How can I set something like that up? Are there systems that are easy to use and set up? Has anyone played around with an SDK of one of these systems? Where can I get a starter kit from? EDIT: I'm running a mixed Linux and Windows network, and I'm vaguely hoping to use this for authenticating on both operating systems. (No, there's no domain controller, but I can set one up using Samba, I suppose.)

  • How much user data should be required to grant a password reset?

    - by Andrew Heath
I'm looking to add password-reset functionality to my site and have been browsing the numerous threads discussing various aspects of that issue here on SO. One thing I haven't really seen clarified is how much information to require from the user for confirmation before sending out the reset email. is email alone enough? email + account username? email + account username + some other identifying value all accounts must input? I don't want my site to seem like an old wrinkly nun with a ruler, but I don't want people to be able to abuse the password reset system willy-nilly. Suggestions?

  • How does the "Remember my password" checkbox work?

    - by Veera
There are numerous login forms with the little check box "Remember my password" so that the next time you visit the website, the browser automatically fills up the password field for you. But I have noticed a behavior in modern browsers, such as Chrome/Firefox, which shows up a notification bar to save the user name/passoword even though that particular web page does not have any "remember password" check box. so my questions are: If I have to put the "remember password" check box in a login form, what do I have to do when the user checks it? I mean, do I have to store the password in browser cookies (or Local Storage)? If so, should the password be encrypted or plain text? The "Save password" notification bar is a browser's functionality or is there any way to invoke it from the web page?

  • Change password in Task Scheduler in script

    - by titanium
I'm changing password every month for all scheduled tasks I created in Task Scheduler. This is because our security policy expires our password every month. Due to increasing number of scheduled tasks I'm creating, it eats up a lot of time in just changing password within Task Scheduler. My question is: Is there a way in script to change password in one run specifying the tasks, DOMAIN\username, and password? I know there's a security risk in putting the password in script. The password in script will be removed after the running it.

  • How can I check a user/password combination on an ActiveDirectory without putting the password in a String?

    - by Jean Hominal
I want to check User/Password combination on a Windows domain. Right now I do it with the following code: bool Login(String username, String password) { var principalContext = new PrincipalContext(ContextType.Domain); principalContext.ValidateCredentials(username, password); } While it works, the thing that bugs me is that I have to put the password in a String in order to use that API; as I am using a SecureString to store the password everywhere else, I would really like to use some way of checking the username / password combination without having to pass the password as a managed System.String. What would be the best way of achieving that?
