  • Is it worthwhile learning about Emacs? [closed]

    Hi there Some time ago, I've heard what a great tool Emacs can be. I've read some papers about it and some watched some video too. I've read that emacs is great not only for developers but for usual users too...so i decided to start learning how to use it and wok with it. The problem is that I'm a MS Windows user and I learn in my spare time PHP and C(I also did some products on those languages, but i still considering myself in learning stage). Another problem is that I learn alone (no friends around to ask/learn from them, programming related stuff). Can you give me some tips about how to use those type of tools(especially those written for gnu/unix) with "poor" GUI but rich features? Do you recommend to use the specific windows written applications only and forget about those which come from GNU?

  • Suggest books/learning path for writing smartphone apps

    I have been writing a lot of HTML, CSS, PHP, MySQL and JavaScript lately working on a website, and I would like to move on to 'proper' OOP with an eye to making smartphone apps. I would like to at least cover iPhone and BlackBerry, which means learning Objective C, Cocoa and Java, before learning the specifics of interacting with the devices themselves, such as native bluetooth/GPS/internet API/methods. I would appreciate pointers to books or resources that will get me from a procedural web developer to object oriented app-maker. Most of the reviews of books on Objective C and Java have been mixed. I am about to start working my way through Beginning Java Objects (APress) which I have borrowed from my brother, so even if it's not a good intro at least it was free!

  • Parameter Tuning for Perceptron Learning Algorithm

    Hi, I'm having sort of an issue trying to figure out how to tune the parameters for my perceptron algorithm so that it performs relatively well on unseen data. I've implemented a verified working perceptron algorithm and I'd like to figure out a method by which I can tune the numbers of iterations and the learning rate of the perceptron. These are the two parameters I'm interested in. I know that the learning rate of the perceptron doesn't affect whether or not the algorithm converges and completes. I'm trying to grasp how to change n. Too fast and it'll swing around a lot, and too low and it'll take longer. As for the number of iterations, I'm not entirely sure how to determine an ideal number. In any case, any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Hello, Chris Coyier of css-tricks.com has written a good article titled Regarding Wheel Invention. In a paragraph he says: On the “reinventing” side, you benefit from complete control and learning from the process. And on the very next line he says: On the other side, you benefit from speed, reliability, and familiarity. Also often at odds are time spent and cost. He is right in both statements I think. I really like his first statement. I do actually sometimes re-invent the wheel to learn more and gain complete control over what I am inventing. I wonder why people are so much against that or rather biased. Isn't there the benefit of learning and getting complete control or probably some other benefits too. I would love to see what you have to say about this.

  • Is Learning the win32 API Worthwhile?

    I was certain that somebody would have specifically asked this question, but from what I can see no-one has (there's been a question about learning win32 but that doesn't cover whether it's worthwhile doing so). I am very interested in gaining a deeper understanding of all the systems I use (I mostly program in C#, at least professionally), so I wondered, very simply - is learning win32 worthwhile, or is it overkill? Am I wasting my time? Is the knowledge I'd gain worth the effort? Similar / related questions on StackOverflow: Does it still make sense to learn low level WinAPI programming? How relevant is Win32 programming to modern professionals?

    Hi everyone, I need to get all available info on 600 URLs from "Alexa Web Information Service", I downloaded the java tool and I'm able to run a single query each time with a single switch/Response Group. I would like to ask how to write a batch file that would automate the process ? the java tool runs from the CMD with the following: C:java UrlInfo (key1) (key2) (URL) (Response Group) UrlInfo - constant key1 - constant key2 -constant URL - variable (I guess I need to use the "(" sign to read from a file) Response Group - variable - (14 total, and I need to run each Response Group on each of the URLs once ) the app returns data in clear text formatted as XML after each query, here is an example: C:java UrlInfo (key1) (key2) www.url.com Rank Response: (?xml version="1.0"?)     I'm looking for an example on how to setup the eToken PRO Java device to work with Mozilla Thunderbird and with other Linux tool such as PAM logon. I installed distributed pkiclient-5.00.28-0.i386.RPM from the official product page eToken Pro but that tool only handles importing/exporting certificates on the device. I read a glance an old HOWTO from eToken on Linux, but I couldn't install pkcs11-lib for this device as recommended for Thunderbird use this crypto device.     Hello. I have a my own custom tool for Visual Studio 2008 SP1. It consists of 5 assemblies: 3 assemblies with code that used heavily in my other projects, 1 assembly-wrapper above VS2008 SDK and assembly with the tool. If I'd debug my tool from visual studio, using "Run external program" option with command line "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe" and arguments "/ranu /rootsuffix Exp" all work perfectly. After that I trying to deploy it to my working VS copy, not to experimental hive doing: gacutil /i Asm1.dll for all my assemblies and doing RegAsm Asm1.dll only for assembly with custom tool. Neither of utils prints any error, all work as planned, even registry keys appeared. But my tool don't work even after PC restart. What did I do wrong?   • Best book for learning linux shell scripting?

    I normally works on Windows machines but on some occasions I do switch to development on linux. And my most recent project will be written entirely on a certain linix platforms (not the standard Apache/MySQL/PHP setup). So I thought it would pay to learn to write some linux automation script now. I can get around the system, start/stop services, compile/install stuffs fine. Those are probably basic drills for a programmer. But if, for example, I wanted to deploy a certain application automatically to a newly minted linux machine every month I'd love to know how to do it. So if I wanted to learn serious linux shell scripting, what book should I be reading? Thanks

    Hi, I am trying to get started with Linux. There are number of books (many of which are just man pages), some of them provide good overview so I can dig deeper online then. What I would like is to find number of screencasts that would cover basics of Linux commands, server administration, commonly performed tasks etc (no GUI, only terminal). I want to watch the screencasts to "get it quicker" and then use a book or online resources to "dig it deeper". Any recommendations? Thanks, Dmitriy.
