• Will An External Audio Interface Reduce CPU Load?

  I am considering buying a very-low-latency audio interface like this one. One question is if it will reduce CPU load (I'm at about 60%+ and my Macbook has 2.4ghz and 4gigs ram) during intensive audio processing. If the answer is "yes," how will it compare to a different, cheaper firewire audio interface? My thought is that offloading the processing is always the same gain, regardless.

• How do I limit the CPU share of TrustedInstaller.exe on a Vista system

  I'm trying to fix a few low end single core desktops running Vista. In normal use they're fast enough not to be a problem. The issue is that because these machines are only on when being used, primarily for school work, windowsupdate begins installing patches it launches TrustedInstaller which in turn hogs 100% of the CPU and renders the machines all but unusable for however long it takes to patch them.

  We have 6 windows workstations, spread out over a fairly large area. Need to share a DSL connection (upgrading to 100/100 mbit fiber in a few months) with these machines over a 1gbit network. Also need Wifi to be available for laptop use. Plan to add 2 rackmount servers for internal use as well. Can someone suggest a decent (preferably low cost) setup that will let me achieve the stuff mentioned above.

  Hi, If I am not mistaken, SQL server cannot be automatically updated via the regular windows backup routine. Instead, there are cummulative updates that need to be installed by hand. I assume this is done for security and stability reasons. Is this correct? If so, how can I keep track of new updates without regularly reading SQL server related blogs? Is there any low-volume newsletter I can subscribe (ideally only announcing critical updates)?

  once in a while, the screen brightness stops responding to any reason, and stays on full brightness.. for those of you that have HP Envy, you know what this means... battery suicide. the FN+* controls don't work. i also tried going in to power settings and adjusting all modes brightness to low wend of spectrum, after saving, it has no effect.. i suppose i could try rebooting as i always just put my laptop to sleep :/ anyone came across this ?

• What is a reasonable range for signal strength when next to my router?

  I know that these things depend largely on specific hardware but I don't even know if I am in the neighborhood. What would a reasonable range of signal strength be when my device is less than 5 feet from my router? House3 is my main router at 61% strength and that seems very low! Repeater is my... repeater which is 50' away in the next room. I'm not terribly concerned with the Repeater until I get my main router settled.

The users are end-users, on the low end of computer literate, non developers. We have around 5 support people and 50 or so end users.   Hi, sometimes I feel my server not responding as smoothly as I would expect (i have a Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 2.80GHz Quad Core), given that for example, the 'top' commands reports a low load < 0.5, CPU are almost completely idle ... I maybe have internet connectivity issues, so I don't really know if it's me or if it's the server itself. Is there anykind of benchmarking script (or something analogous) I could run and see the actual performance of the server ?

  I want to use my bash shell to see the attributes that are shown when you right click on an Application and click Get Info. The specific attributes that I want to know whether or not they are checked is Open in Low Resolution, Prevent App Nap, and Locked. I looked in the Info.plist file but only generic information about the file was contained here, not which attributes were checked. Is this information contained in the Applications binary? Where is it?

But after the year 2014, health insurance companies will not be able to turn customers away for preexisting conditions. • Mac OS X web server memory depletion issues

Why is available memory dropping to ~20MB after a while, bringing the whole server down? I see httpd processes climbing more and more, and the only thing I can do is to restart the server and everything will work fine again. How does, for example, four 320x240 cameras fare against a single 640x480 camera? I'm not well versed in the architecture of the USB interface, what are the performance caveats?
