• Strengthening code with possibly useless exception handling

- by rdurand
Is it a good practice to implement useless exception handling, just in case another part of the code is not coded correctly? Basic example A simple one, so I don't loose everybody :). Let's say I'm writing an app that will display a person's information (name, address, etc.), the data being extracted from a database. Let's say I'm the one coding the UI part, and someone else is writing the DB query code. Now imagine that the specifications of your app say that if the person's information is incomplete (let's say, the name is missing in the database), the person coding the query should handle this by returning "NA" for the missing field. What if the query is poorly coded and doesn't handle this case? What if the guy who wrote the query handles you an incomplete result, and when you try to display the informations, everything crashes, because your code isn't prepared to display empty stuff? This example is very basic. I believe most of you will say "it's not your problem, you're not responsible for this crash". But, it's still your part of the code which is crashing. Another example Let's say now I'm the one writing the query. The specifications don't say the same as above, but that the guy writing the "insert" query should make sure all the fields are complete when adding a person to the database to avoid inserting incomplete information. Should I protect my "select" query to make sure I give the UI guy complete informations? The questions What if the specifications don't explicitly say "this guy is the one in charge of handling this situation"? What if a third person implements another query (similar to the first one, but on another DB) and uses your UI code to display it, but doesn't handle this case in his code? Should I do what's necessary to prevent a possible crash, even if I'm not the one supposed to handle the bad case? I'm not looking for an answer like "(s)he's the one responsible for the crash", as I'm not solving a conflict here, I'd like to know, should I protect my code against situations it's not my responsibility to handle? Here, a simple "if empty do something" would suffice. In general, this question tackles redundant exception handling. I'm asking it because when I work alone on a project, I may code 2-3 times a similar exception handling in successive functions, "just in case" I did something wrong and let a bad case come through.

• Unindex google code svn repository content from google index

- by matcheek
I developed a small web site and saved the code to google code repository. Everything has been running smoothly for a while until results from google code svn repository started showing up before the results from the actual website. Is there any way I could stop google from indexing google code repository content or at least make its rank lower than the web site? I am not talking sophisticated seo techniques but rather some simple settings if there are any.

• 5 ways to stop code thrashing…

- by MarkPearl
A few days ago I was programming on a personal project and hit a roadblock. I was applying the MVVM pattern and for some reason my view model was not updating the view when the state changed??? I had applied this pattern many times before and had never had this problem. It just didn’t make sense. So what did I do… I did what anyone would have done in my situation and looked to pass the blame to someone or something else. I tried to blame one of the inherited base classes, but it looked fine, then to Visual Studio, but it seemed to be fine and eventually to any random segment of code I came across. My elementary problem had now mushroomed into one that had lost any logical basis and I was in thrashing mode! So what to do when you begin to thrash? 1) Do a general code cleanup – Now there is a difference between cleaning code and changing code . When you thrash you change code and you want to avoid this. What you really want to do is things like rename variables to have better meaning and go over your comments. 2) Do a proof of concept – if cleaning code doesn’t help. The you want to isolate the problem and identify the key concepts. When you isolate code you ideally want it to be in a totally separate project with as little complexity as possible. Make the building blocks and try and replicate the functionality that you are getting in your current application. 3) Phone a friend – I have found speaking to someone else about the problem generally helps me solve any thrashing issues I am having. Usually they don’t even have to say anything to solve the problem, just you talking them through the problem helps you get clarity of mind. 4) Let the dust settle – Sometimes time is the best solution. I have had a few problems that no matter who I discussed them with and no matter how much code cleaning I had done I just couldn’t seem to fix it. My brain just seemed to be going in circles. A good nights rest has always helped and often just the break away from the problem has helped me find a solution. 5) Stack overflow it – So similar to phone a friend. I am really surprised to see what a melting pot stack overflow has been and what a help it has been in solving technology specific problems. Just be considerate to those using the site and explain clearly exactly what problem you are having and the technologies you are using or else you will probably not get any useful help…

• How important is to be able to write code like you would write prose

- by benhowdle89
Recently I heard of a company that, for interviews, asks potential employees to stand up and write out code on a whiteboard. Apparently that freaked alot of interviewees out. This got me thinking and even though I consider myself a reasonable programmer, I would be hard pressed to write lengthy code out without referring to previous code I had written or doing a quick Google search. How many programmers could safely say "Yes I could write all my code out just like I was writing an email"?

• How one could use a live editor

- by Sathvik
I was thinking about a live editing environment where code / a source file is synchronized so that, changes made by one user would be carried across to all others editing the file. Something like Google Wave, but for code. Could this kind of an environment be better for the code, as changes are shared instantly? (with revision-control, of course) Has anyone tried (or has had a need for) using a shared environment for code?

• TSQL Shred XML - Working with namespaces (newbie @ shredding XML)

- by drachenstern
Here's a link to my previous question on this same block of code with a working shred example Ok, I'm a C# ASP.NET dev following orders: The orders are to take a given dataset, shred the XML and return columns. I've argued that it's easier to do the shredding on the ASP.NET side where we already have access to things like deserializers, etc, and the entire complex of known types, but no, the boss says "shred it on the server, return a dataset, bind the dataset to the columns of the gridview" so for now, I'm doing what I was told. This is all to head off the folks who will come along and say "bad requirements". Task at hand: Current code that doesn't work: And if we modify the previous post to include namespaces on the XML elements, we lose the functionality that the previous post has... DECLARE @table1 AS TABLE ( ProductID VARCHAR(10) , Name VARCHAR(20) , Color VARCHAR(20) , UserEntered VARCHAR(20) , XmlField XML ) INSERT INTO @table1 SELECT '12345','ball','red','john','<sizes xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"><size xmlns="http://example.com/ns" name="medium"><price>10</price></size><size xmlns="http://example.com/ns" name="large"><price>20</price></size></sizes>' INSERT INTO @table1 SELECT '12346','ball','blue','adam','<sizes xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"><size xmlns="http://example.com/ns" name="medium"><price>12</price></size><size xmlns="http://example.com/ns" name="large"><price>25</price></size></sizes>' INSERT INTO @table1 SELECT '12347','ring','red','john','<sizes xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"><size xmlns="http://example.com/ns" name="medium"><price>5</price></size><size xmlns="http://example.com/ns" name="large"><price>8</price></size></sizes>' INSERT INTO @table1 SELECT '12348','ring','blue','adam','<sizes xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"><size xmlns="http://example.com/ns" name="medium"><price>8</price></size><size xmlns="http://example.com/ns" name="large"><price>10</price></size></sizes>' INSERT INTO @table1 SELECT '23456','auto','black','ann','<auto xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"><type xmlns="http://example.com/ns">car</type><wheels xmlns="http://example.com/ns">4</wheels><doors xmlns="http://example.com/ns">4</doors><cylinders xmlns="http://example.com/ns">3</cylinders></auto>' INSERT INTO @table1 SELECT '23457','auto','black','ann','<auto xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"><type xmlns="http://example.com/ns">truck</type><wheels xmlns="http://example.com/ns">4</wheels><doors xmlns="http://example.com/ns">2</doors><cylinders xmlns="http://example.com/ns">8</cylinders></auto><auto xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"><type xmlns="http://example.com/ns">car</type><wheels xmlns="http://example.com/ns">4</wheels><doors xmlns="http://example.com/ns">4</doors><cylinders xmlns="http://example.com/ns">6</cylinders></auto>' DECLARE @x XML -- I think I'm supposed to use WITH XMLNAMESPACES(...) here but I don't know how SELECT @x = ( SELECT ProductID , Name , Color , UserEntered , XmlField.query(' for $vehicle in //auto return <auto type = "{$vehicle/type}" wheels = "{$vehicle/wheels}" doors = "{$vehicle/doors}" cylinders = "{$vehicle/cylinders}" />') FROM @table1 table1 WHERE Name = 'auto' FOR XML AUTO ) SELECT @x SELECT ProductID = T.Item.value('../@ProductID', 'varchar(10)') , Name = T.Item.value('../@Name', 'varchar(20)') , Color = T.Item.value('../@Color', 'varchar(20)') , UserEntered = T.Item.value('../@UserEntered', 'varchar(20)') , VType = T.Item.value('@type' , 'varchar(10)') , Wheels = T.Item.value('@wheels', 'varchar(2)') , Doors = T.Item.value('@doors', 'varchar(2)') , Cylinders = T.Item.value('@cylinders', 'varchar(2)') FROM @x.nodes('//table1/auto') AS T(Item) If my previous post shows there's a much better way to do this, then I really need to revise this question as well, but on the off chance this coding-style is good, I can probably go ahead with this as-is... Any takers?

• TSQL Shred XML - Is this right or is there a better way (newbie @ shredding XML)

- by drachenstern
Ok, I'm a C# ASP.NET dev following orders: The orders are to take a given dataset, shred the XML and return columns. Task at hand: Here's my code that works and does what I want it to: DECLARE @table1 AS TABLE ( ProductID VARCHAR(10) , Name VARCHAR(20) , Color VARCHAR(20) , UserEntered VARCHAR(20) , XmlField XML ) INSERT INTO @table1 SELECT '12345','ball','red','john','<sizes><size name="medium"><price>10</price></size><size name="large"><price>20</price></size></sizes>' INSERT INTO @table1 SELECT '12346','ball','blue','adam','<sizes><size name="medium"><price>12</price></size><size name="large"><price>25</price></size></sizes>' INSERT INTO @table1 SELECT '12347','ring','red','john','<sizes><size name="medium"><price>5</price></size><size name="large"><price>8</price></size></sizes>' INSERT INTO @table1 SELECT '12348','ring','blue','adam','<sizes><size name="medium"><price>8</price></size><size name="large"><price>10</price></size></sizes>' INSERT INTO @table1 SELECT '23456','auto','black','ann','<auto><type>car</type><wheels>4</wheels><doors>4</doors><cylinders>3</cylinders></auto>' INSERT INTO @table1 SELECT '23457','auto','black','ann','<auto><type>truck</type><wheels>4</wheels><doors>2</doors><cylinders>8</cylinders></auto><auto><type>car</type><wheels>4</wheels><doors>4</doors><cylinders>6</cylinders></auto>' DECLARE @x XML SELECT @x = ( SELECT ProductID , Name , Color , UserEntered , XmlField.query(' for $vehicle in //auto return <auto type = "{$vehicle/type}" wheels = "{$vehicle/wheels}" doors = "{$vehicle/doors}" cylinders = "{$vehicle/cylinders}" />') FROM @table1 table1 WHERE Name = 'auto' FOR XML AUTO ) SELECT @x SELECT ProductID = T.Item.value('../@ProductID', 'varchar(10)') , Name = T.Item.value('../@Name', 'varchar(20)') , Color = T.Item.value('../@Color', 'varchar(20)') , UserEntered = T.Item.value('../@UserEntered', 'varchar(20)') , VType = T.Item.value('@type' , 'varchar(10)') , Wheels = T.Item.value('@wheels', 'varchar(2)') , Doors = T.Item.value('@doors', 'varchar(2)') , Cylinders = T.Item.value('@cylinders', 'varchar(2)') FROM @x.nodes('//table1/auto') AS T(Item) SELECT @x = ( SELECT ProductID , Name , Color , UserEntered , XmlField.query(' for $object in //sizes/size return <size name = "{$object/@name}" price = "{$object/price}" />') FROM @table1 table1 WHERE Name IN ('ring', 'ball') FOR XML AUTO ) SELECT @x SELECT ProductID = T.Item.value('../@ProductID', 'varchar(10)') , Name = T.Item.value('../@Name', 'varchar(20)') , Color = T.Item.value('../@Color', 'varchar(20)') , UserEntered = T.Item.value('../@UserEntered', 'varchar(20)') , SubName = T.Item.value('@name' , 'varchar(10)') , Price = T.Item.value('@price', 'varchar(2)') FROM @x.nodes('//table1/size') AS T(Item) So for now, I'm trying to figure out if there's a better way to write the code than what I'm doing now... • Help a Python newbie with a Django model inheritance problem

- by Joshmaker
I'm working on my first real Django project after years of PHP programming, and I am running into a problem with my models. First, I noticed that I was copying and pasting code between the models, and being a diligent OO programmer I decided to make a parent class that the other models could inherit from: class Common(model.Model): self.name = models.CharField(max_length=255) date_created = models.DateTimeField(auto_now_add=True) date_modified = models.DateTimeField(auto_now=True) def __unicode__(self): return self.name class Meta: abstract=True So far so good. Now all my other models extend "Common" and have names and dates like I want. However, I have a class for "Categories" were the name has to be unique. I assume there should be a relatively simple way for me to access the name attribute from Common and make it unique. However, the different methods I have tried to use have all failed. For example: class Category(Common): def __init__(self, *args, **kwargs): self.name.unique=True Spits up the error "Caught an exception while rendering: 'Category' object has no attribute 'name' Can someone point me in the right direction?

• Are there solutions for streamlining the update of legacy code in multiple places?

- by ccomet
I'm working in some old code which was originally designed for handling two different kinds of files. I was recently tasked with adding a new kind of file to this code. Most of my problems were solved by filling out an extensive XML file with a new entry that handled everything from what lists were named to how the file is written in plural lower case. But this ended up being insufficient, as there were maybe 50 different places in 24 different code files where I had to update hardcoded switch-statements that only branched for the original two file types. Unfortunately there is no consistency in this; there are methods which operate half from the XML file, and half off of hardcode. Some of the files which look like they would operate off of the XML file don't, and some that I would expect that I'd need to update the hardcode don't need it. So the only way to find the majority of these is to run through testing the whole system when only part of it is operational, finding that one step to fix (when I'm lucky that error logging actually tells me what is going on), and then running the whole thing again. This wastes time testing the parts of the code which are already confirmed to work, time better spent testing the new parts I have to add on top of it all. It's a hassle and a half, and to my luck I can expect that I will have to add yet another new kind of file in the near future. Are there any solutions out there which can aid in this kind of endeavour? Something which I can input some parameters of current features, document what points in a whole code project actually need to be updated, and run something nice the next time I need to add a new feature to the code. It needn't even be fully automated, something that'll help me navigate straight to the specific points in everything and maybe even record what kind of parameters need to be loaded. Doubt it matters specifically, but the code is comprised of ASP.NET pages, some ASP.NET controls, hundreds of C# code files, and a handful of additional XML files. It's all currently in a couple big Visual Studio 2008 projects.

• Newbie question on MvcContrib TestHelpers

- by Simon Lomax
Hi, I'm just starting to use the TestHelpers in MvcContrib. I want to try and test an action method on my controller that itself tests if IsAjaxRequest() is true. I've used the same code that is shown in the TestHelper samples to set up the TestControllerBuilder _controller = new StarsController(); _builder = new TestControllerBuilder(); _builder.InitializeController(_controller); So that _controller has all the faked/mocked HttpContext inside it, which is really great. But what do I do now to force IsAjaxRequest() on the internally faked Request object to return true?

• Newbie question about file formatting in Python

- by user568041
I'm writing a simple program in Python 2.7 using pycURL library to submit file contents to pastebin. Here's the code of the program: #!/usr/bin/env python2 import pycurl, os def send(file): print "Sending file to pastebin...." curl = pycurl.Curl() curl.setopt(pycurl.URL, "http://pastebin.com/api_public.php") curl.setopt(pycurl.POST, True) curl.setopt(pycurl.POSTFIELDS, "paste_code=%s" % file) curl.setopt(pycurl.NOPROGRESS, True) curl.perform() def main(): content = raw_input("Provide the FULL path to the file: ") open = file(content, 'r') send(open.readlines()) return 0 main() The output pastebin looks like standard Python list: ['string\n', 'line of text\n', ...] etc. Is there any way I could format it so it looks better and it's actually human-readable? Also, I would be very happy if someone could tell me how to use multiple data inputs in POSTFIELDS. Pastebin API uses paste_code as its main data input, but it can use optional things like paste_name that sets the name of the upload or paste_private that sets it private.

• Java Enum Newbie Question

- by ikurtz
i have a situation where i need the Checker enum below used in multiple classes: package Sartre.Connect4; public enum Checker { EMPTY, RED, YELLOW } so i put the Checker in a Checker.java file and then from the classes that need it i simply do the following: example: public Cell(){ currentCell = Checker.EMPTY; } example: public Cell(Checker checker){ currentCell = checker; } and the code compiles fine and runs fine also. so what is my question? well being new to Java i am just wondering if the way i use Checker without encapsulating it in a class is a sound implementation? it may be because of The enum declaration defines a class (called an enum type). as noted in Java docs enum tutorial page. thank you for your insight into this matter.

• eliminating duplicate Enum code

- by Don
Hi, I have a large number of Enums that implement this interface: /** * Interface for an enumeration, each element of which can be uniquely identified by it's code */ public interface CodableEnum { /** * Get the element with a particular code * @param code * @return */ public CodableEnum getByCode(String code); /** * Get the code that identifies an element of the enum * @return */ public String getCode(); } A typical example is: public enum IMType implements CodableEnum { MSN_MESSENGER("msn_messenger"), GOOGLE_TALK("google_talk"), SKYPE("skype"), YAHOO_MESSENGER("yahoo_messenger"); private final String code; IMType (String code) { this.code = code; } public String getCode() { return code; } public IMType getByCode(String code) { for (IMType e : IMType.values()) { if (e.getCode().equalsIgnoreCase(code)) { return e; } } } } As you can imagine these methods are virtually identical in all implementations of CodableEnum. I would like to eliminate this duplication, but frankly don't know how. I tried using a class such as the following: public abstract class DefaultCodableEnum implements CodableEnum { private final String code; DefaultCodableEnum(String code) { this.code = code; } public String getCode() { return this.code; } public abstract CodableEnum getByCode(String code); } But this turns out to be fairly useless because: An enum cannot extend a class Elements of an enum (SKYPE, GOOGLE_TALK, etc.) cannot extend a class I cannot provide a default implementation of getByCode(), because DefaultCodableEnum is not itself an Enum. I tried changing DefaultCodableEnum to extend java.lang.Enum, but this doesn't appear to be allowed. Any suggestions that do not rely on reflection? Thanks, Don

• I thought everyone did it like this – Training Session Code Management

- by Fatherjack
One of an occasional series of blogs about things that I do that perhaps others don’t. From very early on in my dealings with SQL Server Management Studio I started using Solutions and Projects. This means that I started using them when writing sessions and it wasn’t until speaking with someone at PASS Summit 2013 that I found out that this was a process that was unheard of by some people. So, here we go, a run through how I create and manage code and other documents that I use in presentations. For people unsure what solutions and projects are; • Solution – a container for one or more projects. • Project – a container for files, .sql files are grouped as Queries, all other files are stored as Misc. How do I start? Open Management Studio as normal, and then click File | New and select Project This will bring up the New Project dialog box and you can select/add details as necessary in the places indicated. If this is the first project you are creating then be sure to select the Create directory for solution check box (4). If know in advance that you are going to have more than one project in the solution then you may want to edit the Solution name (3) as by default it will take the name of the project that you enter at (2). This will lead you to the following folder structure (depending on the location that you chose in 3) above. In SSMS you need to turn on the Solution Explorer, either via the View menu or pressing Ctrl + Alt + L This will bring up a dockable window that will let you quickly access the files that you choose to include in the Solution. Can we get to work and write some code yet please? Yes, we can. As with many Microsoft products there are several ways to go about this, let’s look at the easiest way when creating new code. When writing a presentation I usually start from the position we are currently in – a brand new solution and project with no code. Later on we will look at incorporating existing code files into the Project where we need it. Right-click on the Project name and choose Add New Query As soon as you click this you will be prompted to select the sql server that you want to connect to and once you have done that you will have your new query open in the text editor and the Solution Explorer will now look like this, showing your server connection and your new query. And the Project folder will look like this Now once you have written your code don’t press save, choose Save As and give the code a better name than QueryX.sql. SSMS will interpret this as a request to rename Query1 and your Project and the Project folder will show that SQLQuery1.sql no longer exists but there is now a file named as you requested. If you happen to click save in error then right-click the query in the project and choose rename. You can then alter the name as you like, even when open in the SSMS text editor, and the file will be renamed. When creating a set of scripts for a presentation I name files with a numeric prefix so that when they are sorted by name they are in the order that I need to use them during the session. I love this idea but I’ve got loads of existing scripts I want to put in Projects Excellent, adding existing files to a project is easy, let’s consider that you have query files in your My Documents folder and you want to bring them into the Project we have just created. Right-click on the Project and choose Add | Existing Item Navigate to the location of your chosen file and select it. The file will open in SSMS text editor and the Project will be updated to show that the selected query is now part of your project. If you look in Windows Explorer you will see that the query file has been copied into the Project folder, the original file still remains in your My Documents (or wherever it existed). I’ll leave it as an exercise for the reader to explore creating further Projects within a solution but will happily answer questions if you get into difficulties. What other advantages do I get from this? Well, as all your code is neatly in one Solution folder and the folder contains only files that are pertinent to the session you are presenting then it makes it very easy to share this code, simply copy the whole folder onto a USB stick, Blog, FTP location, wherever you choose and it’s all there in one self-contained parcel. You don’t have to limit yourself to .sql query files, you can add any sort of document via the Add Existing Item method, just try it out. Right-click on the protect and choose Add | Existing Item Change the file type filter. You can multi select items here using Ctrl as you click each item you want. When you are done, click the Add button and the items will be brought into your project. Again, using this process means the files are copied into the project folder, leaving you original files untouched in their original location. Once they are here you can double click them in the SSMS Solution Explorer to open them, for files with a specific file type then the appropriate application will be launched – ie Word, Excel etc. However, if the files are something that the SSMS Text editor can display then they will open in a tab in SSMS. Try it out with a text file or even a PS1 file … This sounds excellent but what do I need to watch out for? One big thing to consider when working like this is the version of SSMS that you are using. There is something fundamentally different between the different versions in the way that the project (.ssmssqlproj) and solution (.sqlsuo and .ssmssln) files are formatted. If you create a solution in an older version of SSMS and then open it in a newer version you will be given the option to upgrade it. Once you do this upgrade then the older version of SSMS will not be able to open the solution any more. Now this ranks as more of an annoyance than disaster as the files within the projects are not affected in any way, you would just have to delete the files mentioned and recreate the solution in the older version again. Summary So, here we have seen how using SSMS Projects and Solutions can help keep related code files (and other document types) together in a neat structure so that they can be quickly navigated during a presentation and it also makes it incredibly simple to distribute your code and share it with others. I hope this is of use to you and helps you bring more order into your sql files, whether you are a person that does technical presentations or not, having your code grouped and managed can make for a lot of advantages as your code library expands.

• RC of Entity Framework 4.1 (which includes EF Code First)

- by ScottGu
Last week the data team shipped the Release Candidate of Entity Framework 4.1. You can learn more about it and download it here. EF 4.1 includes the new “EF Code First” option that I’ve blogged about several times in the past. EF Code First provides a really elegant and clean way to work with data, and enables you to do so without requiring a designer or XML mapping file. Below are links to some tutorials I’ve written in the past about it: Code First Development with Entity Framework 4.x EF Code First: Custom Database Schema Mapping Using EF Code First with an Existing Database The above tutorials were written against the CTP4 release of EF Code First (and so some APIs might be a little different) – but the concepts and scenarios outlined in them are the same as with the RC. Go Live License Last week’s EF 4.1 RC ships with a “go live” license that enables you to use it in production environments. The final release of EF 4.1 will ship within the next 4 weeks and will be 100% API compatible with the RC release. Improvements with the RC The RC includes several improvements and enhancements. The EF team has a good blog post summarizing the RC changes. Scott Hanselman also has a nice video interview with the data team that talks more about the release. One of my favorite improvements introduced with last week’s RC is its support for medium trust security. This enables you to use EF 4.1 (and code-first) within low-cost ASP.NET shared hosting web environments – without requiring a hoster to install anything to use it. EF 4.1 also now supports validation with not only code-first scenarios, but also model-first and database-first workflows. Upgrading from previous releases The RC does include a few API tweaks and changes from the prior CTP builds. Read the release notes that come with the release to get a more detailed listing of the changes. John Papa also has an excellent Upgrading to EF 4.1 RC blog post that describes the steps he took when upgrading a large project he wrote with the previous CTP5 release. The work to upgrade is pretty straight forward and easy – use his write-up as a guide on how to quickly update projects of your own. NuGet Package Rename One of the changes that the data team made between the CTP5 and RC releases was to rename the NuGet package name from “EFCodeFirst” to “EntityFramework”. They decided to make this change since the EF 4.1 release now includes several additions above and beyond just code first. If you already have installed the “EFCodeFirst” NuGet package, you’ll want to uninstall it and then install the new “EntityFramework” NuGet package. John Papa’s blog post details the exact steps on how to do this (it only takes ~20 seconds to do this). More EF Tutorials Julie Lerman has created some nice whitepapers and tutorials for MSDN that show using the new EF4 and EF 4.1 feature set. Click here to find links to read and watch them. Summary I’m really excited about the EF 4.1 release that will be shipping next month. It significantly improves the Entity Framework, and makes it even easier and cleaner to work with data inside of .NET. You can take advantage of it within all ASP.NET projects (including both Web Forms and MVC), within client projects using Windows Forms and WPF, and within other project types like WCF, Console and Services. You can use NuGet to easily install it within all of them.
