  Microsoft Silverlight 4 is in beta. It supports PCM audio output. It would be madness to stream PCM over internet (for ex in P2P chart webApp) so we need Pure C# open source PCM to Ogg convertor. No unmanaged code, nothing going out of .net sandbox. So does any one know such Pure C# open source PCM to Ogg convertor? What do I need: Open Source Libs for encoding. Tutorials and blog articles on How to do it, about etc. BTW: why Pure C#? - because Silverlight 4 does not support unmanaged or just not C# DLL's. BTW2: this question is similar to this one but it is different because Ogg is Open Source, free while mp3 will not be free until 2010

  I'm getting ready to start an open-source project that will target .NET/Mono. For those who have started their own open source venture... Do you let the fact that a project is going to be open-source weigh on the decision of what language to use? For example. Most .NET open-source projects are written in C#. However, if you were more comfortable with VB.NET, Boo, Nemerle, etc... would you use it? What other considerations are there? Maybe you have written such a tutorial, example of open source libraries, and your final product is great for a beginner to understand it.   Whenever I SSH somewhere I get something like this in the logs: sshd[16734]: reverse mapping checking getaddrinfo for 1.2.3.4.crummyisp.net [1.2.3.4] failed - POSSIBLE BREAK-IN ATTEMPT! And it is right: if I do host 1.2.3.4 it returns 1.2.3.4.crummyisp.net, but if I do host 1.2.3.4.crummyisp.net it is not found. I have two questions: What security threat is there? How could anyone fake a one-way DNS in some threatening way? Do I have any recourse for fixing this? I'll send my ISP a bug report, but who knows where that'll go.

• Small projects using the cathedral model: does open-source lower security?

  We know of Linus' law: With enough eyeballs all bugs are shallow In general, people seem to say that open-source software is more secure because of that very thing, but... There are many small OSS projects with just 1 or 2 developers (the cathedral model, as described by ESR). For these projects, does releasing the source-code actually lower the security? For projects like the Linux kernel there are thousands of developers and security vulnerabilities are quite likely going to be found, but when just some few people look through the source code, while allowing crackers (black hat hackers) to see the source as well, is the security lowered instead of increased? I know that the security advantage closed-source software has over OSS is security through obscurity, which isn't good (at all), but it could help to some degree, at least by giving those few devs some more time (security through obscurity doesn't help with the if but with the when). EDIT: The question isn't whether OSS is more secure than non-OSS software but if the advantages for crackers are greater than the advantages for the developers who want to prevent security vulnerabilities from being exploited.

  Reference The post that started it all In order to clear up the original question I asked in a provocative manner, I have posed this question. If you learn an algorithm from an open source project, is it OK to use that algorithm in a separate closed sourced project? And if not, does that imply that you cannot use that knowledge ever again? If you can use it, what circumstance could that be? Just to clarify, I am not trying to evade a licence, otherwise I would not have asked the question in the first place. I believe this presents a difficult question and it is interesting to know where the debate can end up.

I have done the following steps: In apache2/apache2.conf file ,HostnameLookups is set as OFF Tcpdump session confirmed thatApache was doing double reverse lookups even though the HostnameLookupsdirective was clearly turned off. No hostnames insites-available. The problem still remains. • Caching DNS server (bind9.2) CPU usage is so so so high.

  Hi, I have a caching-only dns server which get ~3k queries per second. Here is specs: Xeon dual-core 2,8GHz 4GB of RAM Centos 5x (kernel 2.6.18-164.15.1.el5PAE) bind 9.4.2 rndc status: recursive clients: 666/4900/5000 About 300 new queries (not in cache) per second. Bind always uses 100% on one core on single-thread config. After I recompiled it to multi-thread, it uses nearly 200% on two core :( No iowait, only sys and user. I searched around but didn't see any info about how bind use CPU. Why does it become bottleneck? One more thing, here is RAM usage: cat /proc/meminfo MemTotal: 4147876 kB MemFree: 1863972 kB Buffers: 143632 kB Cached: 372792 kB SwapCached: 0 kB Active: 1916804 kB Inactive: 276056 kB I've set max-cache-size to 0 to make sure bind can use as much RAM as it want, but it always stop at ~2GB. Since every second we got not cached queries so theoretically RAM must be exhausted but it wasn't. Do you have any idea? TIA, -Gk

It started out as a little app then after some releases, it got more and more popular and it started consuming more time and responsibility from me. So I have enabled the donation option in SourceForge. I'm passionate to continue developing it for free but if (ever) any money comes in, how should I split it with my team? Should I split the amount equally among the number of team members? (50-50 as it is two-member team now) Number of classes, commits or any other valuable submissions by team members? Any other idea?   First of all I apologize for my poor understanding of network and I hope I used the correct terminology for everything: I have bought a domain name with 1&1 to create an online shop, using kingeshop. I followed the steps explains here to point the domain name to kingeshop IP address and everything is working fine. Now I would also like to use my domain name to create an email account. But 1&1 seems to say they're not responsible for this now the DNS is transfered to kingeshop's. What I'm wondering is who is really "in charge" of my domain name now? 1&1 also lets me configure the MX-record but I don't have a clue what I can do with this. Could I just use an existing gmail address somehow? Thanks a lot for any help or clarity you can bring me on that matter!

  have a server 2003 domain controller i have installed active directory integrated dns under the forward lookup zone for domain_name.local i see an APIPA ip address that is set for (same as parent folder) with ip number 169.x.x.x looks like (same as parent folder) Host A 169.x.x.x (apipa subnet range) problem is, from other forums that i have read, that this is due to dual nics and one on that is not getting a dynamic or static ip address BUT... I only have one nic in this server? where could this be coming from and could it mess up other settings or not allowing the DC to be contacted? i am just wondering what symptoms could arise due to the record being there. any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Let's say you have an open source music player, along comes someone, copies it, adds features, modifies the interface, etc and sells it. Nobody would find out. So how does it work? Related: I'm working in some projects myself to make me more employable, so employers can take a look at my code but with some of them I don't feel like uploading them to an online repository, ie sourceforge, and make them visible for the general public.

  Hi, I was wondering if I buy a wireless access point/router that also acts as a DNS nameserver for DHCP clients. I can see the hostnames of my home devices in the DHCP clients table of the router I have, it doesn't seem like a great leap of the imagination to have a local nameserver on there, something like hostname.home that automatically publishes those entries to a local zone. But - I can't find one that does that. Is there a reason why this shouldn't/can't be done? Or is my Google-Fu just weak? Cheers,

  I have turned on dns query logs, and when running "tail -f /var/log/syslog" I see that I get hundreds of identical requests from a single ip address: Apr 7 12:36:13 server17 named[26294]: client 121.12.173.191#10856: query: mydomain.de IN ANY + Apr 7 12:36:13 server17 named[26294]: client 121.12.173.191#44334: query: mydomain.de IN ANY + Apr 7 12:36:13 server17 named[26294]: client 121.12.173.191#15268: query: mydomain.de IN ANY + Apr 7 12:36:13 server17 named[26294]: client 121.12.173.191#59597: query: mydomain.de IN ANY + The frequency is about 5 - 10 requests per second, going on for about a minute. After that the same effect repeats from a different IP address. I have now logged about 10000 requests from about 25 ip addresses within just a couple of hours, all of them come from China according to "whois [ipaddr]". What is going on here? Is my name server under attack? Can I do something about this?

• Best practices for including open source code from other public projects?

  If I use an existing open source project that is hosted for example on github within one of my projects, should I check in the code from the other project into my public repo or not? I have mixed feelings about this, #1 I want to give proper credit and attribution to the original developer, and if appropriate I will contribute back any changes I need to make. However given that I have developed / tested against a specific revision of the other projects code, that is the version that I want to distribute to users of my project. Here is the specific use case to illustrate my point. I am looking for a more generalized answer than this specific case. I am developing simple framework using rabbitmq and python for outbound messages that will allow for sending sms, twitter, email, and is extensible to support additional messaging buses as well. There is a project on github that will make the creation and sending of SMS messages developed by another person. When I create my own repo how do I account for the code that I am including from the other project?

• Is it possible for DNS to direct traffic to different ports?

  Right now I have a DNS CNAME record that makes ftp.angryoctopus.net an alias for the actual FTP URL domain, which is angryoctopus.net:65021 The goal is that a client should be able to type ftp://ftp.angryoctopus.net/ in their browser's address bar, and be directed to Angry Octopus's FTP site on my server - which is hosted at port 65021. Of course the hostname won't resolve. Is it possible to accomplish this type of alias somehow, or am I just beating a dead horse? This reminds me of DynDNS, which I used a few years ago for something-or-other. How does DynDNS spoof ports like that, and can I immitate it to make this work?
