I've never done any scripting on Windows but now I need to write a batch file that downloads a file off the internet (amongst other things). If it was linux I would use wget.
Is there a builtin executable that will download a file to a given directory? This needs to run on XP.
I'm running a small home server that stores my documents. The disks in this server are in a RAID 1 configuration (using Linux md) and it's also periodically being backup up to an external hard drive to make sure I don't lose them. However, I'm always accessing the files from other computers on the home network using an SMB share, and this results in a considerable speed penalty (especially when connected over WLAN). This is quite annoying when editing large files, such as digital camera RAWs, for example.
I've been looking for a solution to this problem. It would have to offer some kind of local caching to speed up the file access. The client would preferably not keep a copy of all data on the server, as it consists of a very large collection of photographs, most of which I will not access frequently. Instead, it should only cache the accessed files and sync the changes back in the background. Ideally, it would also do some smart read-ahead (cache the files that are in the same directory as the currently opened file, for examples), but I suppose that's asking a bit much. Synchronization should be automatic (on file change). Conflicting file changes (at the same time on different clients) are unlikely to happen in my use case, but I would prefer if they are handled properly (notification to the user).
I've come across the following options, so far:
something similar to Dropbox. iFolder seems to be the only thing that comes close, but its reputation (stability) and requirements put me off.
A distributed file system such as OpenAFS. I'm not sure this will speed up file access. It is probably overkill for what I need.
Maybe NFS or even Samba offer these possibilities. I read a bit about Windows' Offline Files, but its operation seems limited (at least on Windows XP).
As this is just for personal use, I'm not willing to spend a lot of money. A free solution would be preferred. Also, the server needs to run on Linux, and I need a client for at least Windows.
Hi,
In my MacOS 10.5, it has set all my *.patch files to open with 'Notepad in Windows Via parallel'.
I have tried to change it by
1. click 'OpenWith..'
2. select 'TextEdit'
3. check the 'Always Open With' box
But still when I get new *.patch file, it will set to open 'Nodepad in Windows' by default.
Can you please tell me how can I change that for good?
Thank you.
i basically want to run:
C:\>xcopy [0-9]{13}\.(gif|jpg|png) s:\TargetFolder /s
i know xcopy doesn't support regular-express filename searches.
i can't find out how to find out if PowerShell has a Cmdlet to copy files; and if it does, how to find out if it supports regular expression filename matching.
Can anyone think of a way to perform a recursive file copy/move with regex filename matching?
I often need to edit CSV files that will later be imported into databases. I need to reorder columns, change values, delete lines, etc. I use NeoOffice for this now - it's basically Open Office with some Mac UI stuff tweaked.
Often, though NeoOffice tries to be "helpful" and reformats fields it thinks are dates, rounds numbers to some number of decimals, etc. This breaks the file import and/or changes important data values. How can I prevent this from happening? I need to edit the fields exactly as they would appear in a text editor, with absolutely no changes to the data in the fields.
I need free duplicate file finder/remover app, with ability to
find duplicate files/folders by name and/or by size and to remove one of duplicates.
Can you please recommend any? and why?
Thanks
EDIT:
Changed to CW. Please add more apps to list if you know any.
This is probably trivial, but I'm quite new to Linux and I was unable to find any info online.
In a folder, I can execute the command find . -regex '.*py' and get the following result:
./.#netMHC3.2.py
Is this a file in the current directory? What can I do to display its contents?
Thank you
In Windows 7 you can pin a document to a program in the taskbar. I pinned an .xls document to Calc, but when I click on the shortcut I get the following error:
soffice.bin - System Error
The program can't start because sal3.dll is missing from your computer.
Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.
I got the same error when I pinned a .txt file to Writer.
I tried repairing Open Office, as suggested by the error, but that didn't fix the problem.
Any ideas? Is sal3.dll part of something that isn't installed by default?
My backupexec is setup to integrate with exchange, to backup the information store, versus just backing up the data file path.
My exchange mdbdata folder is 17 gigs. But my backup exec is backing up 40 gigs worth of data. I have gone through it a million times, and it's strictly backing up exchange information store.
I deleted all my backups and started over, to clear the incremental backup old data.
Where is all this extra data coming from?
I'm have trouble transfering files again from my work PC, which is a linux machine to my home windows PC.
My work has changed it so I now need to SSH twice before I can access my PC.
So I need to:
ssh [email protected]
password: xxxxx
I then need to do it again.
ssh computer_name
password: xxxxx
I've tried accessing directly via my computers IP but to of no avail.
Is there a way I can use pscp or file zilla to ssh twice so I can transfer files?

I am using Windows 7 and my application server is Windows Xp.
When I copy files from my local to server,it takes long time.
Is there any solution for solving this ?
When I copy files from Xp to Xp, it is fast.
I found a soln in .net

I tried it ,but no change
Hi Guys,
I'm having an issue where after the server has been up for a period of time (~week/few days) the server will start reading corrupt data. For instance when I run a sha1sum of a file after a fresh boot it remains the same. However after a while I will start to get segfaults and from then on whenever I read this file I get a different sha1sum.
I've checked S.M.A.R.T with long tests and I've run an extended memtest86+(12 passes)

I could really use some help on this, do you have any idea what could cause this? It's really frustrating me as it seems to trigger entirely randomly and will not go away until I reboot. I'm also use KVM for virtualization as well as MD for software RAID on this server and the processor is a Phenom II X4 965. I don't believe it's the software raid however as this affects files also hosted on non-raid partitions so I don't know.
I'm using MS Paint on WinXP at work, for capturing simple screenshots.
Problem: MS Paint always wants to save in BMP format.
How can I set PNG to be Paint's default file-saving format?
Note: Suggestions about other software are irrelevant. I know there are many other software tools available. But I'm asking specifically about MS Paint.
I have an Excel spreadsheet file that has 5 or so columns and hundreds of lines. I need to convert this (export these data) to an XML file. I'm interested in three of the columns and they correspond to these XML tags, where info1 can be followed by info2, info3, etc...
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
<list>
<info1>
<id>111</id>
<value>222</value>
<des>333</des>
</info1>
</list>
If possible, I would like to avoid building this XML manually. It wouldn't be too much trouble to rearrange the Excel file such that the three columns I'm interested in were in their own file. But then I would need to export those data into an XML file of the above format. Any ideas?
Hi there,
I am trying to achieve something that you might typically use a hosts file for, but that isn't suitable here.
I want a Windows PC to refer to a local file (I can serve it from a web server at localhost if needed) when it attempts to fetch a certain remote file via HTTP. However, I need other files from that particular remote web server to be fetched as usual.
Any help appreciated.
I am having problems with my internet connection. At the moment I am on a mac and connected through a netgear wireless router. The internet connection either won't open a webpage at all or if it does it takes ages. However if I turn my VPN on the pages open at a normal speed. Also skype functions OK and I seem to be able to download files ok. I have tried connecting with a wire between the router and the computer and it makes no difference.
In 2008 server the File resource manager can be set up to alert users when they go over their quota etc. This is all configured however the email notifications are not working.
They have been configured but the event log shows that the user does not have permission to send to the exchange server.
There isnt an option to chosse who to send the email from.
Is there a way to get this to work?
Thanks
Im trying to recursively get an html page to get everything that's there and save it to my directory. Lwp-rget from perl allows me to do this but I'm having the problem that its getting all the files and changing them from .rpm, .xml, .html, etc to .bin. I've been trying to maybe use the --keepext=application/xml or any type but it continues to save the file as .bin. Any way I can stop that auto formatting? Thanks.
Does anyone know if this utility still exists in Windows 7 and if so where I can find it? In Windows 95 there was a utility that would show an executable content including dependencies and the functions. It was similar to a file preview, it would just a brief overview of native applications without opening them.
I work in a big corporation, and the disk space my team gets in the corporate file server is so low, I am considering turning my work PC into a file server.
I ask this community for links to tutorials, software suggestions, and advice in general about how to set it up.
My machine is an Intel Core2Duo E7500 @ 3GHz, 3 GB of RAM, Running Windows XP Service Pack 3. Upgrading, formatting or installing another OS is out of the question. But I do have Administrator priviledges on the PC, and I can install programs (at least for now).
A lot of security software I don't even know about is and must remain installed. But I only need communication whithin the corporate network, which is not restricted.
People have usernames (logins) on the corporate network, and I need to use them to restrict access. Simply put, I have a list of logins of team members, and only people in the list should access the files.
I have about 150 GB of free disk space. I'm thinking of allocating 100 GB to the team's shared files.
I plan monthly backups on machines of co-workers, same configuration. But automation of backups is a nice, unnecessary feature: it's totally acceptable for me to manually copy the contents to a different machine once a month.
Uptime is important, as everyone would use these files in their daily work.
I have experience as a python and C programmer, but no experience whatsoever as a sysadmin, and almost nothing of my programming experience is network programming. I'm a complete beginner in this.
Thanks in advance for any help.
EDIT
I honestly appreciate all the warnings, I really do, but what I plan to make available is mostly stuff that now is solely on DVDs just for space reasons.
It's 'daily work' to read them, but 'daily work write' files will remain on the corporate server.
As for the importance of uptime, I think I overstated it: a few outages are OK, it's already an improvement over getting the DVDs.
As for policy, my manager is kind of on my side, I will confirm that before making my move.
As for getting more space through the proper channels, well, that was Plan A, and it's still on the table... But I don't have much hope. I'm not as "core businees" as I'd like.
What is the ending 'r' for and the leading 'd' for in file permissions on Linux?
Example:
drwxr-xr-x
I know about the user, group, others part, and I know w=write, r=read, x=execute.
But I don't know about the leading 'd' and the trailing 'r'.
Care to explain?
Thanks
