• What good free forum engines are out there? [closed]

  I'm looking for a forum engine for my website, which will look modern, easy to use and follow lengthy discussions. Most of the times people hear "forum" they imagine unresponsive phpBB with terrible color scheme and unnecessarily huge user info sections (avatar, signature) about 600px high each, which make it impossible to see more than 5 posts on a really big screen. I'd like it to be the other way around with my future forum. Features I'd like to see: Clean, transparent section/thread selection, Must not have "message posted, you will be redirected to wherever" screens, 1-click message posting (captchas are ok, but not the ones that erase the whole post when you mistype), Tree hierarchy for comments to posts

  When posed with a problem, particularly when it is complicated in nature, I try to take some time to think about the approach I am going to take to solve the problem. Despite this, what often happens is, as I am programming the solution, I start to think of details of the problem that I missed, and I adjust the code accordingly. What results is a mess of code that needs to be refactored. I want to "refactor as I go," but while it sounds easy enough to do, I have a really hard time doing it. When the detail that I missed is small, it is tempting to make a small update to my design, rather than erase what I've already written and write it the way it is supposed to be. It sounds like a question with an obvious answer, but are there any techniques to use to better "refactor as you go"? I know that this is a good principle, but I fail with it time and time again.

• GRUB not showing /dev/sda2 is Windows 7 Loader

  A few days ago I accidentally deleted Ubuntu partition using GParted. I thought Windows 7 would start normally, but I got a "grub-rescue" screen instead. Then, I recreated a partition for Ubuntu (/dev/sda6) and reinstalled it. Ubuntu starts properly now; but GRUB shows me /dev/sda2 is Windows Recovery System (WRS), what is false, since /dev/sda1 is WRS and /dev/sda2 is Windows 7 Loader. I booted using Windows 7 disk and tried to correct this problem automatically and by bootrec.exe /fixboot and /fixmbr, and nothing is able to fix my problem. Yet, Windows (disk) says there is no OS in my computer. What should I do? Will I have to erase my hard disk to get Windows 7 back?

• Google is still crawling and indexing my old, dummy, test pages which now are 404 not found

  I have set up my site with sample pages and data (lorem ipsum, etc..) and Google has crawled these pages. I deleted all these pages and actually added real content but in webmaster tools, i still get a lot of 404 errors Google trying to crawl these pages. I have set them to "mark as resolved" but some pages still come back as 404. Furthermore, I have a lot of these sample pages still listed when i do a search of my site on Google. How to remove them. I think these irrelevant pages are hurting my rating. I actually wanted to erase all these pages and start getting my site being being indexed as a new one but I read it's not possible? (I have submitted a sitemap and used "Fetch as Google.")

• USB disk not recognized after detaching from DVD player. What to do?

  I had one Transcend 4GB USB stick formatted to NTFS and was working fine. Today I inserted this disk into a DVD player, and it was saying, "loading". After a long time, noting happened, and it seemed that the stick (NTFS) is not recognized by it. I took out the stick and tried to reformat to FAT32. But the stick is not being recognized in my machine (Ubuntu 12.04). I tried the advices from USB drive not recognized after Erase Disk, without any success. When I tried Disk Utility, the stick is indicated as a generic device. See image, Formatting this device fails, saying, No medium found. Again see image, gparted does not even list this device. The same thing happens for fdisk. It is not listed there. Have I totally lost this stick? What should I do?

• Installer doesn't recognise windows 7 install

  I will start off saying I searched a bit for this problem with little success. You see, I am an utmost noob when it comes to Ubuntu and Linux based OS (hence why I want to install it and discover it) and the thread I found were too specific for me to do anything with. Therefore, if you find a thread that is noob-friendly and answers my question, please link it below or please try to answer as simply as possible :) The problem: I want to install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 bit alongside Windows 7 on my main hard drive (to get the choice which one to start when booting). Pop the CD in, reboot and get to the installer screen. I know I'm supposed to have 3 options, but I'm only given the option to erase my hard drive or "do something else". Therefore, my question is: how do I make Ubuntu recognise Windows 7, so it may install alongside it?

• How to display consistent background image

  Drawing a large background is relatively slow in PyGame. In order to avoid drawing BG every frame, you could draw it once, then do nothing. However, if something is overdrawn onto the surface and keeps moving, you will need to redraw the background in order to "erase" the color pixels left by moving object; otherwise, you will have "traces" of the moving object. I have a moving object in my PyGame. However, I do not want to "clear the color buffer" by redrawing the background image. Redrawing the background image every frame is slow. My solution : I will "clear" only required portions (where the "traces" of moving object are left) of the "buffer" by redrawing portions of background. Is there any other better way to have a consistent background?

• Checking collision of bullets and Asteroids

  I'm trying to detect collision between two list of bullets and asteroids. The code works fine, but when the bullet intersects with an asteroid, and that bullet passes through another asteroid, the code gives an assertion, and it says about it can't increment the iterator. • How safe is ubuntu?

  Last week I started desktop sharing using krfb. Since I continue last session, this program keep on starting again. Two days ago I noticed messages poping up saying something like "rejecting uninvited connection from (some ip)", but today I figured it might be because of this and I was right. The krfb was running in the background. Hence the question. How safe is ubuntu? Should I expect someone to connect to my computer and erase everything I got on disk? EDIT To extend my question : how safe it is comparing to other OSs (windows, mac,...)? How safe it is comparing to other distros?

  I have an older laptop with a ADA hard disk I can't really buy a new one so I want to erase Windows Vista on my computer and only have Ubuntu so that I can have more space. How do I make it go directly to my blank CD? My Windows Vista is messed up and I can't even get into it. I want to download the new version of Ubuntu while in Ubuntu. I downloaded it but it didn't go directly to the blank CD. I tried to copy all of Ubuntu onto the CD once it was downloaded but it says there was an error while copying. What should I do?

  I have an HP Pavilion Sleekbook that came with windows 8 pre-installed. I had trouble dual booting after installing ubuntu, so I disabled safeboot on bios and proceeded to try boot-repair, nothing happened. No dual boot yet. So I tried to reinstall ubuntu, but without the manual partitioning. So I chose to erase ubuntu 13 and reinstall it. Instead it deleted all my HP recovery partitions and windows as well. Here is the log of boot-repair. http://paste.ubuntu.com/6354919/ Gparted and fdisk only show one partition: /dev/sda1 I am wondering if you could suggest any way of recovering my windows partition and have a working windows 8 again? • Ubuntu 12.04 installer does not recognize Windows 7

  I recently purchased an ASUS N56VZ-ES71 laptop which came with Windows 7 Home Premium installed on it. I wish to dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 on it. I shrank the hard drive partitions to leave about 150 GB unallocated for Ubuntu 12.04. When I boot the Live CD of Ubuntu and attempt to install, the installer does not recognize any other operating systems. Through reading a few questions, I have found that this is due to a GPT partitioning table that Windows uses. I ran boot-repair as per other threads' suggestions. This was my output: http://paste.ubuntu.com/1176988/ I suppose my question is: how do I proceed in order to get the installer to recognize Windows, so that I don't have to erase the current partition table and can get a safe install?   I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 new clean install , not a VM, that I have added to a Windows Server 2003 based domain using my account which has domain admin rights. The domain functional level is 2003. I performed a clean install of SQL Server 2008 R2 using my account which has domain admin rights. The installation completed without any errors. I logged into SSMS locally and attempted to add another domain account by clicking Search, Advanced and finding the user in the domain. When I return to the "Dialog - New" window and click OK I receive the following error: Create failed for Login 'Domain\User'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo) An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo) Windows NT user or group 'Domain\User' not found. Check the name again. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 15401) I have verified that the firewall is off, tried adding a different domain user, tried using SA to add a user, installed the hotfix for KB 976494 and verified that the Local Security Policy for Domain Member: Digitally encrypt or sign secure channel Domain Member: Digitally encrypt secure channel Domain Member: Digitally sign secure channel are disabled none of which have made a difference. I can RDP to a Server 2003 server running SQL 2008 and add the same domain user without issue. Also if I try to connect with SSMS to the sql server from another system on the domain using my account I get the following error: Login failed. The login is from an untrusted domain and cannot be used with Windows authentication. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18452) and on the database server I see the following in the security event log: An account failed to log on.   I want to run my own root server (directly accessible from the web without a hardware firewall) with debian lenny, apache2, php5, mysql, postfix MTA, sftp (based on ssh) and maybe dns server. What measures/software would you recomend, and why, to secure this server down and minimalize the attack vector? Webapplications aside ... This is what I have so far: iptables (for gen. packet filtering) fail2ban (brute force attack defense) ssh (chang default, port disable root access) modsecurity - is really clumsy and a pain (any alternative here?) ?Sudo why should I use it? what is the advantage to normal user handling thinking about greensql for mysql www.greensql.net is tripwire worth looking at? snort? • Spring Security - is Role and ACL security overkill?

  I have a 3 tier application that requires security authorizations be placed on various domain objects. Whether I use Spring's ACL implementation or roll my own, it seems to me that ACL based security can only be used to authorize (service) methods and cannot be used to authorize URL or web service invocations. I think this because how could a web service call check the ACL before it has hydrated the XML payload? Also, all the examples for web access security in the Spring documentation are securing URL's based on Role. Is it typical to use Spring's roles to secure web presentation and web service calls, while at the same time using ACL's to secure the business methods? Is this overkill?
