• Database schema publishing with SQL Server 2005/2008

  Hi everybody, I've a question for you. We have built a software that has a single database for each customer. These databases are managed by SQL Server 2008. Now the problem is that when we build our software we, sometimes, need to change something on the schema (like adding table, modifying existing ones etc) and migrate these updates on all the customers' databases. Now this task is accomplished by hand: we generate update scripts and then, using T-SQL, we update each database. This is ok for a small set of customer, but we are now becoming bigger and bigger and we really don't know how to face it. We found Wizardby and it seems interesting, but quite difficult for us to learn in this exact moment. Do you have any other trick? Thanks a lot, Marco

• Multiple ASP.Net Controls On One Page

  We have created a User Control for ASP.Net. At any one time, a user's profile page could contain between one and infinity of these controls. The Control.ascx file contains quite a bit of javascript. When the control is rendered by .Net to HTML, you notice that it prints the javascript for each control. This was expected. I'd like to reduce the amount of HTML output by the server to increase page load times. Normally, you could just move the javascript to an external file and then you only need one extra HTTP request which will serve for all controls. But what about instances in the javascript where we have something like document.getElementById('<%= txtTextBox.ClientID %'); How would the javascript know which user control work with? Has anyone done something like this, or is the solution staring me in the face?

• UI fonts and languages

  I am developing a multilingual web application that has a nice looking UI. I thought using CSS 3's font-face property to make it even nicer UI, but I'm not really sure if that's a good idea. According to some people I have talked to, different languages need different fonts. This means that there is no single font that can display characters of all languages, because the same character may look different across languages. For example, according to Wikipedia, the Unicode code point U+4EE4 looks different in Korean and Japanese languages. So my question is, would it make most sense to contain the fonts within the language packs -- or within the themes of my UI?

• iPhone + selecting a portion of UIImage using some rectangular frame and than cropping it

  Hello, I have requirement of selecting a portion of UIImage displayed on iPhone screen (for e.g. selecting the face from the image of some human being) using some rectangular type of frame. It means a rectangular type of frame can be moved across the image to place it at portion that we want. After placing it, I need to resize the frame in order to have that portion completely fit in the frame. Finally, the UIImage should be cropped so that I have a UIImage only displaying the portion that I selected using the frame. Please help me. Regards, Pratik

• When is it appropriate to do interaction based testing as opposed to state based testing?

  Hi, When I use Easymock(or a similar mocking framework) to implement my unit tests, I'm forced to do interaction-based testing (as I don't get to assert on the state of my dependencies. Or am I mistaken?). On the other hand if I use a hand written stub (instead of using easymock) I can implement state based testing. I'm quite unclear if I want to go with interaction based testing or state based testing. I'm biased and I want to use Easymock, but I'm not sure if there would be any side-effects that I may have to face in the future. Can anyone please throw some light on this? Thanks in advance!

• Antialiased fonts in emacs 23.2 on Windows

  I'm having trouble getting antialiased fonts to work correct in emacs 23.2, to the extent that it appears that it doesn't actually support antialised fonts. If I do the following in emacs 23.1: (set-face-font 'default "DejaVu Sans Mono-9.0:antialias=subpixel") (describe-font nil) Then this reports the full name as "DejaVu Sans Mono-9.0:antialias=subpixel", and the font looks nice and smooth. However, doing the same thing in emacs 23.2 gives the full name as "DejaVu Sans Mono-9.0" and the font looks nasty and chunky. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

• Texture repeats even with GL_CLAMP_TO_EDGE set

  Hi, i'm trying to put a translucing texture on a face which uses points 1 to 4 (don't mind the numbers) on the following screenshot Sadly as you can see the texture repeats herself in both dimensions, I tried to switch the TEXTURE_WRAP_S from REPEAT to CLAMP_to_EDGE but it doesn't change anything.   I have to detect heads of people in crowd in real time.For that I detected edge from video using matlab but from edge detected video , how to identify heads that i am unable to do. I used edge detection of video because it is easy to find circle from edged video and detection of head would be easy can anyone help me or suggest me any method for head- detection in real time. I have used VGG head detector and viola jones algorithm but it is only detecting face for small size video not detecting heads for large crowd. Suggestions?

• How to programmatically blur an area in a movie (in python) ?

  I have a movie, and I want to produce a new movie out of it with an area blurred (e.g. an object, a writing or a face). The area is moving, so I must have fine control of the current frame and move the position of the blur area accordingly. Blur is an option, but also a dark mask is fine too. Now, I have a question open at superuser on which software to use, but since I suspect I will have to buy adobe premiere to do something like this, and I don't want to shell out a kidney for something I have to do once, I am thinking about coding it myself in python. What are the best libraries available for this task ?

• Is there a way to load an icon from a memory file handler?

  I am writing wxWidgets application where I am importing the .ICO file as a header. I am attempting to use a wxMemoryFSHandler to make this icon (and others as well) accessible as files. I am using the following code to do this: wxFileSystem::AddHandler(new wxMemoryFSHandler); wxMemoryFSHandler::AddFileWithMimeType( "app_inactive.ico", CsiWebAdmin_ico, sizeof(CsiWebAdmin_ico), "image/vnd.microsoft.icon"); Unfortunately, if I try to load an icon from this "file" as shown below, it does not work. As I stepped through the MSW source (wx 2.8.10), I can see that the loader never attempted to resolve the virtual file name. wxIcon icon("memory:app_inactive.ico"); I have also tried the following: wxIcon icon(wxIconLocation("memory:app_inactive.ico")); and have encountered the same results. I realise that I can use resources to load these files but I would still face the same dilemma when the time came to port my application to GTK. Is there something obvious that I am missing?

• Working effectively unit tests / Anyone tried the in-assembly approach?

  I'm trying to re-introduce unit testing into my team as our current coverage is very poor. Our system is quite large 40+ projects/assemblies. We current use a project named [SystemName].Test.csproj were all the test code is dumped and organised to represent the namespaces using folders. This approach is not very scalable and makes it difficult to find tests. I've been thinking about added a Tests folder to each project, this would put the unit tests "in the developers face" and make them easy to find. The downside is the Production release code would contain references to nunit, nmocks as well as the test code and test data.... Has anyone tried this approach? How is everyone else working with unit tests on large projects? Having a Tests project per "real" project/assembly would introduce too many new projs. Thanks in advance

• Problem with Authentication in sharepoint using active directory

  I am currently using windows server 2008 machine. I have active directory and sharepoint setup on the machine. I have a user 'A' in the active directory and i have given the user read permissions to my site. The problem i now face is that, if i log in as user 'A' the site simply shows "error:access denied". This problem goes away if i put 'A' as a site collection administrator, however that is not what i want. I just want 'A' to be a visitor that can browse the site. I also tried granting 'read' permission to my site for 'A' but that still gives me the access denied message. Thank you for your time.

  I know I'll get into all kinds of trouble for bringing this up on SO, but considering that nearly all of us programmers depend on the Internet to get our jobs done, I really think it's worth looking into today's failure of our right to use the Internet by way of Lobbying ISPs. Although something tells me there will be retribution for the actions of the ISPs/tel cos/cable and their lobbyist since, lets face it...ISPs/Telcos didn't invent the Internet. I'm not going to be the one to do it, but um I think somebody already has...as everybody I talked to was having Internet connection problems today at work. Just thought this might be relevant to all of our jobs...in the U.S.A. at least. If you work at an Big evil ISPs, by all means...try and close this question. • OpenGL Performance Questions

  This subject, as with any optimisation problem, gets hit on a lot, but I just couldn't find what I (think) I want. A lot of tutorials, and even SO questions have similar tips; generally covering: Use GL face culling (the OpenGL function, not the scene logic) Only send 1 matrix to the GPU (projectionModelView combination), therefore decreasing the MVP calculations from per vertex to once per model (as it should be). Use interleaved Vertices Minimize as many GL calls as possible, batch where appropriate And possibly a few/many others. I am (for curiosity reasons) rendering 28 million triangles in my application using several vertex buffers. I have tried all the above techniques (to the best of my knowledge), and received almost no performance change. Whilst I am receiving around 40FPS in my implementation, which is by no means problematic, I am still curious as to where these optimisation 'tips' actually come into use? My CPU is idling around 20-50% during rendering, therefore I assume I am GPU bound for increasing performance. Note: I am looking into gDEBugger at the moment Cross posted at Game Development

Therefore, how do I make use of digests when I need to request source-sans-pro.woff? Please note that I place the fonts in assets/fonts directory, not the public/ directory. I don't see a difference between images and fonts, so I want to keep them under the same directory - app/assets.

• How to convert .NET WPF application to Windows Forms?

  Hello, We have created a beautifully designed .NET WPF desktop application. We are installing the application with InnoSetup , and if .NET 3.5 is not present, it automatically installs it. However, the package to download .NET 3.5 is huge and we found out that about 30% of users do not finish instalation due to this. The obvious solution is to recode everything into .NET 1.1 with Windows Forms but its a major development which would take few weeks. Also, we would then face dilemma if to support both versions (and use innosetup to choose the right one) or just ditch WPF all together. Is there any easy way how to convert WPF to Windows Forms? Or do we have any alternative options to consider? Thank you!

• Are there some good and modern alternatives to Javadoc?

  Let's face it: You don't need to be a designer to see that default Javadoc looks ugly. There are some resources on the web which offer re-styled Javadoc. But the default behaviour represents the product and should be as reasonably good-looking. Another problem is the fact that the usability of Javadoc is not up-to-date compared to other similar resources. Especially huge projects are hard to navigate using Firefox's quick search. Practical question: Are there any standalone (desktop) applications which are able to browse existing Javadoc in a more usable way than a browser would? I'm thinking about something like Mono's documentation browser. Theoretical question: Does anyone know, if there some plans to evolve Javadoc, in a somehow-standardized way? • Problem with Maven in Spring roo

  I was trying to run the Wedding RSVP sample given with Spring Roo 1.0.0.RC3. I am running on Maven 2.2.1 and JDK 1.5.0_19, Java and M2 Home are properly set. Unfortunately none of the commands that involve Maven calls (example: "Perform test" or 'Perform eclipse") work and there is no error either. The cursor immediately returns on the roo command line. I also tried the steps at http://blog.springsource.com/2009/05/27/roo-part-2 but same problem. Did anybody face this issue?

• Has Google introduced a system that allows multiple "keyword-only" domains per site?

  I've been told by a client that "a friend" told them that as of January 2010, Google allows multiple domain names that have keywords in them to be associated with a single site. To be honest this sounds rather April-foolish but I'm not sure when his "friend" told him so for the time being I have to take it at face value. I've heard nothing of this and have searched for such a thing this morning, to find nothing but warnings against this practice. Said client seems keen on buying up lots of domains today, so before he insists upon it I just want to be absolutely sure - has Google silently introduced such an allowance, or is there something else they introduced earlier this year that he could be getting confused with? I have a Listener in my system, which suppose to get a UDP trigger times to times from an outside server, ive done this listener as a service. how could i prevent it being shut off by the user? (SDK 1.5), i`am working for a company which create cell phones, and we spread the device with this Listener. as soon as the listener goes off our systems will be terminated any idea for this scenario? *i`am already aware to the face, that the system could also take it off, but this case will be easier to handle and avoid. thanks, ray.

• What tool can I use to extract resources from a VB6 application?

  One of my clients has an application that was written for them using VB6. They no longer have the original resources that were given to the developer. The developer has disappeared off the face of the earth. My challenge is to extract the resources from the executable and rebuild the application, adding new material to it. I've tried using Resource Hacker, but that only finds the icon. The exe is over 26MB, I can't see that the only resource embedded is the icon. Is there a way to extract this resource?

• What is the flag to show the nesting of views in a Mac app?

  I have just spet the last few hours trying to find the flag to use in Terminal to launch an app with the colored outlines around the various view elements to show how they are nested. I know that Matt Gemmell covered it during the Cocoa Face Off session of NSConference 2009 (at about the 13minute mark in the video). Unfortunately I can't actually read what he types and he doesn't speak the exact command. I know it has to be in the Apple docs somewhere but the search system is currently not being of any use. It looks like her just adds -showAllViews YES to the end of the command to open TextEdit but that command has no effect in 10.6.6. I have also tried every other capitalization I can think of as well as using view instead of views. Every command opens TextEdit just fine but doesn't show the colored outlines.
