• Silverlight 3 Offline Mode

  Has anyone found that the userbase is more reluctant to install Silverlight 3 Apps in offline mode because they have no control over "where" the app is installed to? I've had a few issues of a similar nature in the past, with 'power users' getting upset that they can't specify install directories. Are there any workarounds? Any way to get the Silverlight offline installs to prompt for specific install locations and the like? The specific reason given is that users want to install apps to remote storage, like a USB stick or something.

• Using LIKE operator in LINQ to Entity

  Hi, everybody! Currently in our project we are using Entity Framework and LINQ. We want to create a search feature where the Client fills different filters but he isn't forced to. To do this "dynamic" query in LINQ, we thought about using the Like operator, searching either for the field, or "%" to get everything if the user didn't fill that field. The joke's on us when we discovered it didn't support Like. After some searching, we read several answers where it's sugested to use StartsWith, but it's useless for us. Is the only solution using something like: ObjectQuery<Contact> contacts = db.Contacts; if (pattern != "") { contacts = contacts.Where(“it.Name LIKE @pattern”); contacts.Parameters.Add(new ObjectParameter(“pattern”, pattern); } However, we'd like to stick with linq only. • What version of the .NET framework ahould I target?

  I'm a desktop C# developer (that is not ASP) and am wondering about version targeting for small personal projects. These are, of course, trying to reach as wide an audience as possible, and so I've been targeting .NET 3.0 (which is the latest version on a Windows Vista system without any service packs) and 2.0 (which is simply the most compatible version compatible with VS2008). Unfortunately, this precludes me from learning any technologies such as LINQ introduced post 3.0, and, with an upcoming switch to VS2010, I'm wondering if I should target the new 4.0 platform at the expense of uses without the latest and greatest, or should I just stick to trying to reach as wide a userbase as possible?

  Although it’s probably meant to be experienced on the web, I’d love to read a great print version of Why’s Poignant Guide to Ruby. It’s liberally licensed, so I can run off a copy for myself. But I think a work like that deserves more. Full colour illustrations. Main text on the left-hand page, sidebars on the right. (Stick in a few cartoons, or a slice of onion, when there aren’t any sidebars.) A built-in MP3 player and headphones for the soundtrack, but made completely out of telephone wires. Whilst that might be wishing for too much, have you (ever) seen any decent print versions of the book available?

• Brute force characters into a textbox in c#

  Hey everyone, I am VERY new to programming and the only language I know is C# So I will have to stick with that... I want to make a program that "test passwords" to see how long they would take to break with a basic brute force attack. So what I did was make 2 text boxes. (textbox1 and textbox2) and wrote the program so if the text boxes had the input, a "correct password" label would appear, but i want to write the program so that textbox2 will run a brute force algorithm in it, and when it comes across the correct password, it will stop. I REALLY need help, and if you could just post my attached code with the correct additives in it that would be great. The program so far is extremely simple, but I am very new to this, so.   I'm starting a new project based on ASP.NET and Windows server. The application is planned to be pretty big and serve large amount of clients pulling and updating high freq. changing data. I have previously created projects with Linq-To-Sql or with Ado.Net. My plan for this project is to use VS2010 and the new EF4 framework. It would be great to hear other programmers options about development with Entity Framework Pros and cons from previous experience? Do you think EF4 is ready for production? Should i take the risk or just stick with plain old good ADO.NET?

• Eclipse: Synchronizing project on Thumbdrive with PC

  I have a thumb drive (memory stick, flash drive, etc.) on which I use for my projects when I am away from my home PC. Currently I am accessing my Eclipse project directly from my thumb drive when connected to my PC. I would like to copy my files to the PC, develop on the PC, then "synchronize" with the thumb drive (update files on the thumb drive). I also need the reverse process too: synchronize thumb drive files with files on PC. I have looked at the FileSync plugin, but it specifically says it is one-way. How can I synchronize my Eclipse project both directions (PC to thumb drive and thumb drive to PC) on demand (I don't need this done automagically)?

• Relative paths in C#

  I need some help with paths please! Basically I have a project with the following folder structure: Project (root directory which contains the .sln file etc.) Project/MyProj (contains the code) Project/MyProjTest (the test folder) Project/TestResults Now with this Project I need to have a common folder where I can stick a bunch of files for use with the Application without having to copy the files to multiple locations etc. What is the best way to do this? Ideally I would like to have the folder as Project/ResourcesFolder, so that both the Code folder and Test folder can access it. Now if this is the case how do I call this folder from within C#? I've tried Application.StartupPath, Environment.GetCurrentDirectory but they both just return the CURRENT folder which is not what I want. Thanks in advance.

• Update {node_counter} table programatically in drupal

  I currently use the statistics module (core) on my Drupal 6 install. This increments a count in the {node_counter} table every time the node is viewed, and this works. My question is - can I programmatically increment this counter as well? I am looking to achieve this when users interact with content created from views (say click a lightbox), so being able to update the table with AJAX would be ideal. I have done a quick search on d.o and there doesn't appear to be any modules that stick out straight away. Does anyone have any experience with this?

• Middleware for MongoDB or CouchDB with jQuery Ajax/JSON frontend

  I've been using the following web development stack for a few years: java/spring/hibernate/mysql/jetty/wicket/jquery For certain requirements, I'm considering switching to a NoSQL datastore with an AJAX frontend. I would probably build the frontend with jQuery and communicate with the web application middleware using JSON. I'm leaning toward MongoDB because of more dynamic query capabilities, but am still considering CouchDB. I'm not sure what to use in the middle. Probably something RESTful? My preference is to stick with Java (or maybe Scala or Groovy) since I'm using tools like Drools for rules and Shiro for security. But then again, I want to pick something that is quick an easy to work with, so I'm open to other solutions. If you are building ajax/json/nosql solutions, I'd like to hear details about what tools you are using and any pros/cons you've found to using them. Thanks!

• latex tabular vertical alignment to top?

  I'm trying to create a simple tabular with two cells of text and two images below them like so: \begin{tabular}[h]{ c | c} \emph{Normal} & \emph{Cone} \\ \includegraphics[width=0.39\textwidth]{images/pipe1} & \includegraphics[width=0.61\textwidth]{images/pipe2} \end{tabular} The first image is shorter than the second and I want it to be aligned at the top of the cell but for some reason it gets aligned to the bottom of the cell instead. I've tried using the array package and do this: \begin{tabular}[h]{ p{0.39\textwidth} | p{0.61\textwidth} } \emph{Normal} & \emph{Cone} \\ \includegraphics[width=0.39\textwidth]{images/pipe1} & \includegraphics[width=0.61\textwidth]{images/pipe2} \end{tabular} But this doesn't change anything. The first image is still aligned to the bottom. Why is that? Could there be something else going on which forces the alignment to stick to the bottom?

  'I've interned at a company that does a lot of mainframe work. Most of my mainframe experience has been using Java and Unix System Services. I've had some experience with the ISPF interface and C but none with assembler. I’m graduating shortly and will be taking an independent study my last semester. I’d like to stick with the mainframe and was wondering what resources could teach me mainframe assembler? Note I don’t have experience writing assembler for any platform but do understand binary, hex, and have a theoretical understanding of registers.

  Hi, I've just started to learn PHP OOP, previously I have been doing PHP in a procedural manner. I was reading this article and I've got a couple of quick questions, How is the constructor for value objects commonly defined? As one that takes in all "data members" as parameters or stick to the default constructor and use mutator / accessor methods to set / get data members? • OpenID Authentication 2.0 in Joomla 1.0.x

  Is there any easy way to bring OpenID authentication into a Joomla 1.0.x website? I am particularly interested in Google authentication (so I'll want OAuth &/or OpenID Attribute Exchange as well later), but for now just authentication will work. I know Joomla 1.5.x supports OpenID natively but I have to stick with 1.0.x for now. Any ideas? There are some traces of com_openid component on the net but I cannot find anything to look at.. EDIT I managed to find a J-OpenID component, gonna give it a try.

  I need to do a cross-domain request in a chrome extension. I know I can it via message passing but I'd rather stick to just jQuery idioms (so my javascript can also work as a <script src="">). I do the normal: $.getJSON("http://api.flickr.com/services/feeds/photos_public.gne?tags=cat&tagmode=any&format=json&jsoncallback=?", callback(function(data) { alert(data); }); but in the error console I see: Uncaught ReferenceError: jsonp1271044791817 is not defined Is jQuery not inserting the callback function correctly into the document? What can I do to make this work?

• Embedding PDF documents into websites

  I need to embed some PDF documents into a website. The last time I did this, I used a jQuery lightbox to popup an iFrame with the PDF document as the URL. The client's PDF viewer would then take care of the rest. Apparently though, that was a bit buggy on some other peoples browsers. I guess it was due to the large PDF file sizes and the effort it took for their computers to fire up Adobe. So I'm after ideas on how to go about this. How do you guys embed your PDF's into websites? Or do you just stick to adding a download link?

  Hello. I have oriented graph. Graph can be strongly connected. Every vertix can have a set of anything, for example letters. The set is user editable. Every vertix makes intersection of sets in previous vertices (only one step back). But now, there is problem: When I update set of one vertex, the change should expand to all vertices and uptate their intersection of sets of previous vertices. How to do every vertex have correct intersection after update of any vertex? Restriction: algorithm must avoid to stick in infinity. Any idea how to solve it?

  Hi all, I've been implementing my own version of a red-black tree, mostly basing my algorithms from Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red-black_tree). Its fairly concise for the most part, but there's one part that I would like clarification on. When erasing a node from the tree that has 2 non-leaf (non-NULL) children, it says to move either side's children into the deletable node, and remove that child. I'm a little confused as to which side to remove from, based on that. Do I pick the side randomly, do I alternate betweek sides, or do I stick to the same side for every future deletion?

  I have a many-to-many relationship between two tables, let's say Friends and Foods. If a friend likes a food I stick a row into the FriendsFoods table, like this: ID Friend Food 1 'Tom' 'Pizza' FriendsFoods has a Primary Key 'ID', and two non-null foreign keys 'Friend' and 'Food' to the 'Friends' and 'Foods' tables, respectively. Now suppose I have a Friend tom .NET object corresponding to 'Tom', and Tom no longer likes pizza (what is wrong with him?) FriendsFoods ff = tom.FriendsFoods.Where(x => x.Food.Name == 'Pizza').Single(); tom.FriendsFoods.Remove(ff); pizza.FriendsFoods.Remove(ff); If I try to SubmitChanges() on the DataContext, I get an exception because it attempts to insert a null into the Friend and Food columns in the FriendsFoods table. I'm sure I can put together some kind of convoluted logic to track changes to the FriendsFoods table, intercept SubmitChanges() calls, etc to try and get this to work the way I want, but is there a nice, clean way to remove a Many-To-Many relationship with LINQ-To-SQL?

  I'm making some tedious calls to a bunch of functions, but the parameters will be determined at runtime. I wrote a simple function to keep my code DRY but giving it a name is unnecessary. I don't use this function anywhere else. I'm trying to do it the way I would in Scheme, but I get a void-function error: (let ((do-work (lambda (x y z) (do-x x) (do-y y) ;; etc ))) (cond (test-1 (do-work 'a 'b 'c)) (test-2 (do-work 'i 'j 'k)))) I could stick it all into an apply (e.g., (apply (lambda ...) (cond ...))) but that isn't very readable. Is there a better way?

  Hi everyone, I'm trying to use the Visual Studio 2010 Express editions to set up an ASP.NET MVC 2 Web Application using SqlExpress + Entity Framework as the data access. I have both the "C# Edition" and "Web Developer Edition" installed. If I try to add a data source using the "C# edition", I'm missing the "Microsoft SQL Server" data source type. but Visual Studio 2008 Professional has it. as noted by another StackOverflow question, the "Web Developer Edition" has this. However, the Web Developer Edition doesn't support the Entity Framework items: . I'd want to stick with only the Express Editions. Is my use case one that Microsoft forgot about? What can I do here to use SqlExpress + MVC 2 + Entity Framework? Thanks! -Mike

• NO-SQL reliable for small bussines app?

  I'm deciding between go for a NON-SQL engine or a regular SQL one for a document managment system for small bussines. I have experience with firebird/sql server and found a good track of reliability (specially with firebird). This market is full of crappy "servers" (clon-made PC, the mayority), cheap harddisk, rarely use of RAID or anything like that, some are in locations where a power-off is normal, some not have a UPS, etc... (I will include off-site auto-backup to external servers, but that no change the internal setup). (I know about end-user education about such proper setups, but is stupid depend on that, so stick to te point) From the desing point of view, a schema-less database is the way to go for my system, but, I worry if any of the actual solutions (MongoDb, Tokyo Cabinet, etc) are like firebird and survice crash, malfunctions & abuse so data corruption is very rare. The plan is store the office documents there & provide a central repository.

• passing user from UITableView to UIWebView based on selection

  Hello, I'm trying to pass the user on to the interface based on their cell selection in the UITableView, ie, if the user selects cell 1, they are taken to view model 2, containing UIWebView. UIWebView then displays local file, cell1.html. Currently, I've manage to get placeholder using: selectedCellText.text = selectedCell; to display the name of the cell selected. How do I get it to directly pass to the UIWebView, stick UIWebView in the interface and link it using: UIWebView *myWebView = [[UIWebView alloc] initWithFrame:frame]; NSBundle *mainBundle = [NSBundle mainBundle]; NSString *stringUrl = [mainBundle pathForResource:@"selectedCell" ofType:@"html"]; NSURL *baseUrl = [NSURL fileURLWithPath:stringUrl]; NSURLRequest *urlRequest = [NSURLRequest requestWithURL:baseUrl]; [myWebView loadRequest:urlRequest]; My other issue is that some of the cell names have spaces in them, and for simplicity, I'd like to ensure that there are no spaces (actually, will it even work with spaces in the name, I assume with %20 ? • How do i write a sql query with user input and wildcards

  Usually i write my where statements as WHERE key=@0 then add a param. Now i would like the user to specific a few letters such as 'oat' and would like to stick wildcards around it %oat% which matches 'coating'. So how do i write the query so wildcards are around the user input (the 'seachword'). Now lets take it a step further. I would not like the user to write % so he cannot do blah%ing. Perhaps % is part of the sentence (or it could be flat out illegal but i prefer it be part of the sentence). How do i put my wildcards around a word or sentence and disallow the user from putting the wildcard between his words? (and preferably make % part of the sentence) C# ado.net sql/sqlite

• LINQ to SQL vs Entity Framework for an app with a future SQL Azure version

  I've got a vertical market Dot Net Framework 1.1 C#/WinForms/SQL Server 2000 application. Currently it uses ADO.Net and Microsoft's SQLHelper for CRUD operations. I've successfully converted it to Dot Net Framework 4 C#/WinForms/ SQL Server 2008. What I'd like to do is also offer my customers the ability to use SQL Azure as a backend storage for their data instead of local/LAN SQL Server. If I know SQL Azure is in my application's future, should I: A. Switch to LINQ to SQL B. Swith to Entity Framework C. Stick with ADO.Net and SQLHelper Thanks !
