• A Couple Android Soft Keyboard Questions

  This is kind of a repost, and I apologize for any broken rules, but I have a couple of questions about the soft keyboard on Android phones: 1) I have an Android app with a couple different views (that the user switches between). How can I determine which is the current view?? I need to get the current view to execute the code that hides the virtual keyboard. 2) How can I check whether the virtual keyboard is currently being displayed (so I can filter the actions of my various hard keys)?? • Manually changing keyboard orientation for a view that's on top of a camera view

  I'm basically trying to reproduce the core functionality of the "At Once" app. I have a camera view and another view with a text view on it. I add both views to the window. All is well so far. [window addSubview:imagePicker.view]; [window addSubview:textViewController.view]; I understand that the UIImagePickerController does not support autorotation, so I handle it manually by watching UIDeviceOrientationDidChangeNotifications and applying the necessary transforms to the textViewController.view. Now, the problem here is the keyboard. If I do nothing, it just stays in portrait mode. I can get it to rotate by adding the following code to the notification handler. [[UIApplication sharedApplication] setStatusBarOrientation:interfaceOrientation]; [textView resignFirstResponder]; [textView becomeFirstResponder]; However, the following simple test produces weird behavior. Start the app in portrait mode. Rotate the device 90 degrees clockwise. Rotate the device 90 degrees counterclockwise (back to the initial position). Rotate the device 90 degrees clockwise. After step 4, instead of the landscape-mode keyboard, the portrait-style keyboard is shown, skewed to fit in the landscape keyboard frame. Perhaps my approach is wrong from the start. I was wondering if anyone has been able to reliably make the keyboard change its orientation in response to setStatusBarOrientation.

• keep keyboard open when deleting/inserting UITableView's cell (iphone)

  I have a login form using a UITableView. One of the cells has a UISwitch which when on will delete the row above it and when off reinsert it. But the first cell automatically has the keyboard up when the cell is created (basically when the view loads) (by using [cell becomeFirstResponder];) Inserting/deleting any of the cells means that the keyboard animates out and then animates back in. I'd like to remove this so the keyboard stays up while rows are deleted/inserted.

  I encounter the a problem: I have a view controller like this. TO make tool bar up when the keyboard appear, I move the self.view to up. [self.view setFrame:CGRectMake(self.view.frame.origin.x, self.view.frame.origin.y + keyboardFrame.size.height * (up ? -1 : 1), self.view.frame.size.width, self.view.frame.size.height)]; Now I want to click the left button in the tool bar, and appear the view that frame is same as the this keyboard. But where can I add this view? if add the subview to the self.view, it will move up with the self.view on the top of the keyboard, not cover. I'm a beginner about IOS, I have no idea about it, and have searched, but got nothing about this. another question, IF when the toolbar at the bottom, I aslo want to click the left button on it to show the view(the animation and frame both are the same as the keyboard), how can I do ? • simple image animation with the keyboard

  Hi the app I am currently working on requires a simple animation to be performed, which I am able to do but timing is an issue. The app uses the slightly opaque keyboard and I have set up a black background to make it more visually pleasing . The app is a utility app and as the user clicks on a settings button the app will flip which looks great. However there is a problem at the moment in that while the app is flipping the keyboard also closes which itself looks great also, however the background remains. I was wondering if there was a way of animating the background image to follow the keyboard's animation pattern and speed? If I set up a discrete animation time the chances are there will be some sort of overlap and either the image will show too long or the keyboard will show too long. Any suggestions? Another option is to make the keyboard show constantly if anyone knows how to do that? i would rather animate it though as it is quite a simple app and so I would like to make it as aesthetically pleasing as possible. /Conor

• Keyboard not dismissed

  I am developing a messaging application that have SMS.app-like UI. Conversation screen has text input field at the bottom which is moved up with keyboard. Tapping on conversation area dismisses keyboard by calling resignFirstResponder method on UITextView that we use. This usually works fine, but users report a weird bug which I can't reproduce and fix. People say that sometimes onscreen keyboard doesn't go away when they tap on conversation area, though text input field loses input focus. Once the view enters that abnormal state users are able to type with keyboard, but text that is being entered is not visible anywhere. This bug happens in one of conversation views and since then no one text input field in other views doesn't work as expected. The only way to stop this weird behavior is killing application from multitasking bar. Even more weird thing is that keyboard stays visible while navigating between view controllers in UINavigationController. I noticed two things: - if tap on ' Anyone else experiencing same problems. Any ideas on what may cause this bug?

• Disable iOS keyboard (don't show it at all) in phonegap

  If I were writing a native app I would try the solution given here which says: Try to implement the following method in text view's delegate: - (BOOL)textViewShouldBeginEditing:(UITextView *)textView{ return NO; } Unfortunately I need to use phonegap, so I don't have a text view to manipulate. It would be great if I could permanently suppress the keyboard in this app. We've got some custom on screen keyboard that people are supposed to use instead. So, any idea how to disable the popup keyboard completely?

• Boot From a USB Drive Even if your BIOS Won’t Let You

  You’ve always got a trusty bootable USB flash drive with you to solve computer problems, but what if a PC’s BIOS won’t let you boot from USB? We’ll show you how to make a CD or floppy disk that will let you boot from your USB drive. This boot menu, like many created before USB drives became cheap and commonplace, does not include an option to boot from a USB drive. A piece of freeware called PLoP Boot Manager solves this problem, offering an image that can burned to a CD or put on a floppy disk, and enables you to boot to a variety of devices, including USB drives. Put PLoP on a CD PLoP comes as a zip file, which includes a variety of files. To put PLoP on a CD, you will need either plpbt.iso or plpbtnoemul.iso from that zip file. Either disc image should work on most computers, though if in doubt plpbtnoemul.iso should work “everywhere,” according to the readme included with PLoP Boot Manager. Burn plpbtnoemul.iso or plpbt.iso to a CD and then skip to the “booting PLoP Boot Manager” section. Put PLoP on a Floppy Disk If your computer is old enough to still have a floppy drive, then you will need to put the contents of the plpbt.img image file found in PLoP’s zip file on a floppy disk. To do this, we’ll use a freeware utility called RawWrite for Windows. We aren’t fortunate enough to have a floppy drive installed, but if you do it should be listed in the Floppy drive drop-down box. Select your floppy drive, then click on the “…” button and browse to plpbt.img. Press the Write button to write PLoP boot manager to your floppy disk. Booting PLoP Boot Manager To boot PLoP, you will need to have your CD or floppy drive boot with higher precedence than your hard drive. In many cases, especially with floppy disks, this is done by default. If the CD or floppy drive is not set to boot first, then you will need to access your BIOS’s boot menu, or the setup menu. The exact steps to do this vary depending on your BIOS – to get a detailed description of the process, search for your motherboard’s manual (or your laptop’s manual if you’re working with a laptop). In general, however, as the computer boots up, some important keyboard strokes are noted somewhere prominent on the screen. In our case, they are at the bottom of the screen. Press Escape to bring up the Boot Menu. Previously, we burned a CD with PLoP Boot Manager on it, so we will select the CD-ROM Drive option and hit Enter. If your BIOS does not have a Boot Menu, then you will need to access the Setup menu and change the boot order to give the floppy disk or CD-ROM Drive higher precedence than the hard drive. Usually this setting is found in the “Boot” or “Advanced” section of the Setup menu. If done correctly, PLoP Boot Manager will load up, giving a number of boot options. Highlight USB and press Enter. PLoP begins loading from the USB drive. Despite our BIOS not having the option, we’re now booting using the USB drive, which in our case holds an Ubuntu Live CD! This is a pretty geeky way to get your PC to boot from a USB…provided your computer still has a floppy drive. Of course if your BIOS won’t boot from a USB it probably has one…or you really need to update it. • Apps crashing with EXC_BAD_ACCESS when changing to a custom keyboard layout

  I have a custom layout installed (svdvorak_mac6.keylayout). After a reboot another keyboard layout was selected, so I selected my usual one instead. This lead to a lot of apps suddenly starting to crash (Chrome, Skype, Adium etc). I can change to any other built in layout for OS X, but as soon as I choose one custom installed one (either form ~/Library/Keyboard Layouts/ or from /Library/Keyboard Layouts/) the apps crash. The only thing I can remember that I did before the reboot was to install Google's video chat plugin for the browser. • Keyboard shortcuts are not working when unity plugin in ccsm is disabled?

  I am using ubuntu 11.10 with unity 2d , I dont like the unity launcher and use Docky . So , i have created a new seeion and using some tweaking and playing around i have been successful to get rid of the unity launcher and make a perfect interface that i like , but there are two problems .. Keyboard shortcuts not working I had to disable the ubuntu unity plugin in ccsm to get rid of the unity laucher..when it is enabled , i can use the keyboard shortcuts such as alt+tab etc .. But when i disable it , I am unable to use some shortcuts , I can still use some shortcuts like alt+F4 ect. When I maximise a window , it used to show two window (close , maximise , minimize )buttons and title bars So , i set the window decoration in ccsm to !maxvert from any , and it is working fine for most of the time until i try to snsp the window to a side then the title bar just disappears , leaving space between the panel and the window , I cant close this window until i use the alt+mouse to drag it out , because no buttons would be displayed ..

• Ubuntu 11.04 and 10.04 hang with black screen while installing from USB disk

  I've been trying to install Ubuntu 11.04 from a USB flash stick and each time I try to boot from the USB key one of two things happen: A) The screen that asks you what you would like to do (e.g. run Ubuntu from the USB key or install it) shows up and the countdown to the default option starts to count down but as soon as I either touch the keyboard (sometimes I press enter or the arrow keys to select an option) or the countdown gets to zero the screen just locks up and nothing happens no matter how long I wait. B) When I boot from the USB key the screen will flicker for a second and then go black with a flashing white underscore at the top left corner of the screen. Again it doesn't matter how long I wait, nothing happens and pressing keys doesn't do a thing. The very first time I tried to install it I got a terminal-like screen that said something about a directory called 'casper' having an error of some sort. I have tried installing from USB using both 11.04 and 10.10. I'm about to try 10.04. I have read tons of forum posts about this but so far I haven't seen anything in the solutions that apply to me. My intention is to dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu. I must keep Windows as I am required to use Visual Studio for one of my college courses. Right now I'm using Wubi but I really want a full install. I can't use LVPM because it doesn't work with the version of Wubi I used. So now I'm thinking my best bet is to try to get a clean install working. I'd also convert Wubi to a full install too but there's no solution as far as I've read. So could someone tell me a reason why this is happening or if there's something I can do to get around the problem? I'm using a Gateway LT2802u netbook with and Intel Atom N455 processor, 1GB RAM, Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150 graphics card, and a 250GB HDD. I don't have anything on my current Wubi install that I can't replace so keep in mind when answering that I don't care if I lose my current settings and files from Wubi. Thanks everyone! UPDATE I just answered my own question so in case anyone else is having this same problem using similar hardware, do the following: When I first tried installing 11.04 I used the recommended universal installer tool to create the USB live/installation disk. That caused the original problem. Note that I had already downloaded the 11.04 ISO and did not use the included downloader from the USB creator. After that failed I used the same USB creator but had it download 10.10 for me. It also failed with the same issue. I repeated this process with unetbootin as well for both versions. Finally, I downloaded the Ubuntu 10.04 ISO and used the recommended USB creator once again. There was an error while creating the USB live install so I reformatted the USB key as FAT32 and tried again. It created the USB key. I then booted from the USB flash drive and selected "Install Ubuntu" (exact wording was different). It worked! It took me through the process that you see shown in pictures on the Ubuntu website. I let it create the appropriate partitions for me and it simply worked. I did get a few errors while the system tried to restart after it installed. It hung on a terminal-like screen but I pressed ENTER and it restarted. I booted into Windows 7, it checked the disks as it sensed that I messed with a partition, then it booted into Windows normally. Now I'm going to uninstall Wubi and update my new full install of Ubuntu! I'm excited to get the benefits of a full install now. So in the end, hopefully someone can learn from what I did.

• Best wireless mouse/keyboard for conference room computer?

  What would be the best wireless mouse and keyboard for a conference room computer that is used by multiple employees throughout the day? We have one in there right now that is really cheap that doesn't work half the time. This is due to the fact that the batteries run down when left on... and it seems to have problems losing its pairing with the computer dongle. Any ideas on something that won't have battery problems, is very reliable and somewhat tough? Price isn't too much of an issue, but I'd still prefer to get something for less than $100 just in case someone walks away with it.

• microsoft ergo keyboard 4000 zoom feature

  This may be an odd question, I apologize. I just got the Microsoft ergo keyboard 4000 and was curious about how the zoom feature was to work. I'm using Windows 7 and in Word, IE, or when viewing an image the zoom doesn't seem to do anything. Device manager says that the drivers are updated. Is there a special key combination that is used to make it work. Not sure what I'm missing with this. Thanks.

• Keyboard doesn't let me press certain keys at the same time

  I'm not sure how to word the problem other than I can't use certain keys at the same time. For example, when playing games that require you to use the arrow keys to move and jump/duck I am unable to move to the left and jump (left arrow + up arrow) at the same time. As a result, I don't play many games when I get to a point where the jumps and what not are too far. This happens with other keys as well. In FPS I am unable to hold W to move forward and hit 2 to select my secondary weapon. Some information that might help you: I am using Windows 7 64-bit I am using a Micro Innovations KB565BL keyboard How can I fix this?

• Das keyboard boot camp

  So I recently started using a Das keyboard ultimate with my mac and after installing the key re-mapping, it basically works ok. I have a couple of issues with the set up involving boot camp. When I start up the computer, which key maps to option in order to let me pick which operating system to boot into? I think the bios is detecting the keys along the bottom as alt or something like that and I am not sure what to do here. In windows 7, the " and @ keys are switched. How do I get windows to remap this back to the US english settings? Thanks for any help you can provide.

• Keyboard layout for mathematical/Greek symbols

  I've been wondering about this for a long time but never thought to ask: I do a lot of scientific work so there are many times it would be really handy to be able to type mathematical symbols or Greek letters which, for the most part, aren't part of the ASCII character set. Like "8 µ ? s t ? ? … v ? = = ±" and so on. Is there a keyboard layout (for Linux) that maps simple key combinations to these kinds of characters? (Assuming all the encoding and font issues are worked out properly) I know I could create one myself but it'd be a lot easier if someone's already done the work, or at least if there's a partial solution I could modify.

  Just got a new Mac Pro at work and as I can't stand the ZX Spectrum-esque 'dead flies' feel of the new Apple keyboards, I brought my trusty IBM SpaceSaver II to the office (with a USB/PS2 adapter) All seems generally to work ok - even the Trackpoint 'nipple' but periodically the modifier keys, notably the Ctrl and Windows keys seem to go into 'sticky' mode so that typing an 'S' brings up the save dialog, 'O' = open dialog etc. etc. Its generally fixed by switching windows and then returning back to the offending one, but this is really beginning to cheese me off. Can anyone suggest a fix?

• Using curly braces with a standard pc keyboard on a mac laptop

  I have a standard PC keyboard connection to my Mac laptop. All keys work fine but the special characters that need "Alt-Gr" as accelerator keys would not work. I have a Swiss layout where the curly braces are such special keys. However I need them all the time and having to get used to a different layout is too painful (I'd rather get used to a US Layout once and for all). Does anyone have an idea how to switch this? Note: I have managed to switch the option and the command key, so that's not my problem.

(as Lyrositor suggested) EDIT2: the closest answer , as Jo-erland, suggested is to set a hotkey to bring up the gnome-volume-control, and then to use left and right arrows to change volume also beyond the 100% mark. any other suggestions, to make this 1 step only? is it possible to set a hotkey to do a sequence of commands ?

• Solaris x86: Non working keys on keyboard (<, >, #, |)

  Hello everyone, I have a new installation of Solaris 10 10/09 on x86 hardware. The attached keyboard has a normal German layout. The system is configured accordingly by 'kbd -s'. The generic keys (letter, number, umlaut) work fine. Unfortunately some keys like <, , | or # do not. They produce no output on the text console at all. I tried PS/2 and USB keyboards. I cannot test it under X11 as it is currently not working. Thanks.

  I can ALT+TAB to Chrome, then CTRL+T to a new tab, then type my request and hit ENTER, but then when I want to look into the first search result I need to take my hand off the keyboard to click it?? Surely someone can recommend a plugin which enables me to just press 1 to go to the first search result, 2 for the second, etc. Or something like that? EDIT: This Greasemonkey script offers precisely what I want, and appears to install perfectly well on Chrome - but doesn't work at all :( Also, I'm using Google Chrome 4.0.249.43 on 64 bit Ubuntu 9.10.

  At the moment I'm using context menus a lot to access commands in Firefox, but I would like to replace this repetitive clicking and searching with keyboard shortcuts for the common tasks that I perform. How to assign keys to add-on functionality? E.g. I use Close Other Tabs from Tab Mix Plus a lot - but I could not find any add-on that allows me to create a key combination for it e.g. Ctrl Alt Shift F4? • Differences between Cherry mechanical keyboard switches?

  I want a comfortable, responsive mechanical switch keyboard. My only concern about mechanical switch keyboards is the noise. Boards based off of the Cherry MX Blue seem to be the loudest, but apparently offer increased tactility. I don't mind a clicky noise (I would actually prefer a bit of noise), I just don't want anything overpowering. What are the different types of Cherry mechanical switches are out there, and what separates one from the other? Also, where would I be able to test one out?

• Keyboard Slow on a high power machine.

  I am having a terrible time with my high powered machine. The keyboard is not displaying the keys as quickly as I type. Sometimes I have to wait up to a minute for the key to display. When I type ahead it sometimes loses characters. I am not sure where to start looking for this problem. It started about a month ago and I still have not figured out why. It does not always do it. But acts up about 2-3 minutes out of ever hour of use or thereabout. How can I look to isolate and find the problem, and solve it?
