  • Which Programming Languages Support the Following Features?

    My personal programming background is mainly in Java, with a little bit of Ruby, a tiny bit of Scheme, and most recently, due to some iOS development, Objective-C. In my move from Java to Objective-C I've really come to love some features that Objective-C has that Java doesn't. These include support for both static and dynamic typing, functional programming, and closures, which I'm trying to leverage in my code more often. Unfortunately there are trade-offs, including lack of support for generics and (on iOS at least) no garbage collection. These contrasts have lead me to start a search for some of the programming languages that support the following features: Object Oriented Functional Programming Support Closures Generics Support for both Static and Dynamic Typing Module Management to avoid classpath/dll hell Garbage Collection Available Decent IDE Support Admittedly some of these features(IDE support, Module Management) may not be specific to the language itself, but obviously influence the ease of development in the language.   • Why is using C++ libraries is so complicated?

    First of all, I want to note I love C++ and I'm one of those people who thinks it is easier to code in C++ than Java. Except for one tiny thing: libraries. In Java you can simply add some jar to the build path and you're done. In C++ you usually have to set multiple paths for the header files and the library itself. In some cases, you even have to use special build flags. I have mainly used Visual Studio, Code Blocks and no IDE at all. All 3 options do not differ much when talking about using external libraries. I wonder why was there made no simpler alternative for this? Like having a special .zip file that has everything you need in one place so the IDE can do all the work for you setting up the build flags. Is there any technical barrier for this?

    I'm just starting out with a Code-Quality-plugin development for my organization based on the recently released .NET Compiler Platform APIs (Roslyn APIs). I would like to know what are the most relevant possible ways that it could be used by the developer community apart from the usual IDE experience as answered in other questions. I was wondering the implications of opening up a compiler to general public and never came across anything "breakthrough", that could possibly add up to the value of IDE experiences. Is there any performance bottleneck for its implementation since the compiler itself is managed code?

  • In 10.10, USB 3.0 PCI Express card recognized by lspci but not lsusb or dmesg. How to fix?

    Asus N PC, runs 10.10 x86_64 The Asus N comes with 4 usb 2.0 ports, each labelled 2.0 on the case. Attempting to add two usb 3.0 ports to be provided by a generic usb 3.0 pci express card installed in the pci expres slot. The new card says usb 3.0 and has the blue ports. The card is installed into the laptop unpowered, then the laptop is powered on and boots normally.   • How do I get movies to work in my dual CD/DVD computer?

    I have an older Dell Optiplex GX620. It has an IDE CD drive and an IDE DVD drive. I cannot seem to get Ubuntu 14.04 to allow movies to play. I've tried installing libdvdcss2 as well as the libdvdread4. VLC was installed last, but each time I attempt to play a movie, the player flashed briefly, then goes back to the initial screen like I didn't even have a DVD in the drive. I'm fairly new to the linux world, so any/all suggestions would be helpful.

    Oracle Product Manager for Java ME SDK, Sungmoon Cho, presented a session, "Developing Java Mobile and Embedded Applications with Java ME SDK 3.2,” wherein he covered the basic new features of the Java ME Platform SDK 3.2, a state-of-the-art toolbox for developing mobile and embedded applications. The session began with a summary of the four main components of Java ME SDK. A device emulator allows developers to quickly run and test applications before commercialization. It supports CLDC/MIDP CLDC/IMP.NG and CLC/AGUI. A development environment assists writing, running debugging and deploying and enables on-device debugging. Samples provide developers with useful codes and frameworks. IDE Plugins – NetBeans and Eclipse – equip developers with CPU Profiler, Memory Monitor, Network Monitor, and Device Selector. This means that manual integration is no longer necessary. Cho then talked about the Java ME SDK’s on-device tooling architecture: * Java ME SDK provides an architecture ideal for on-device-debugging.* Device Manager plays the central role by managing different devices whether it is the emulator or a device that Oracle provides or recommends or a third party device as long as the devices have a Java Runtime that supports the protocol that is designated.* The Emulator provides an accurate emulation, since it uses the same code base used in Oracle’s Java ME runtime.* The Universal Emulator Interface (UEI) makes it easy for IDEs to detect the platform.He then focused on the Java ME SDK release highlights, which include: * Implementation and support for the new Oracle® Java Wireless Client 3.2 runtime and the Oracle® Java ME Embedded runtime.   • Running an Application on a Different Domain

    Were I am contracting at right now has a new development domain.  Because of IT security rules it is fairly isolated from the domain my computer normally logs into (for e-mail and such).  I do use a VM to log directly into the domain but one of my co-workers found this command to run things on your box but in the other domain.  Pretty cool. For example this runs SQL Server Management Tool for SQL Server 2008: runas /netonly /user:{domain}\{username} "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Binn\VSShell\Common7\IDE\ssms.exe" And this runs visual studios: runas /netonly /user:{domain}\{username} "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe" It does not solve the problem I wanted to solve which would be to be able to assign Users/Groups in Team Explorer.  It instead still uses the domain I am logged into's groups.

  • NetBeans does not install properly

    I'm trying to install NetBeans IDE on my Ubuntu 12.04. However no matter how many time i install/resintall it (from Software Center), it still gives this strange problem: After I complete the installation and try to launch it, Netbeans first displays the initialization window. After it completes, the window disappears and nothing happens. Then after a while Netbeans seemingly restarts and then again shows the initialization window. This goes on in an infinitesimal cycle and I'm ultimately forced to restart my computer and uninstall NetBeans. Why could this be happening? I really need NetBeans as it is a very good IDE.

  • NetBeans 7.0.1 now in RC

    What would a GlassFish release be without a NetBeans version to go with it? The NetBeans team has released the NetBeans IDE 7.0.1 RC 1 which will bring full compatibility with JDK 7 as well as GlassFish 3.1.1 support (this particular RC ships with the soft code freeze build of GlassFish 3.1.1). This 7.0.1 RC 1release also includes numerous bugfixes and performance improvements across all areas and is available from the usual download page and the final version of NetBeans IDE 7.0.1 is expected in late July (once JDK 7 has shipped would be an educated guess). Note that if you're an existing NetBeans 7.0 user you'll be offered with updates to your existing install via the Update Center once 7.0.1 final ships.

  • DVD-ROM: Pioneer DVD-115GA not being detected.

    Specs to put things in context: AMD Athlon XP 2400+ @ 2.00 GHz / 2 x 512 MB PC-3200 DDR RAM / 160 GB IDE HDD / 128 MB GeForce 6200 AGP / FIC AM37 / Windows XP Pro SP3 So this computer is actually an upgraded EMachines T2482. I found a used DVD-ROM for cheap... the Pioneer DVD-115GA. I originally had a plain DVD Reader (Lite-On XJ-HD166S) which was quite useless. So I basically did a simple swap of the drive and powered up the computer. The drive could open and close, and I put in a DVD and it was spinning, but no detection. Going into the BIOS, the drive was not detected. (The IDE cable connecting the DVD-ROM is connected to the CD-ROM below it and then attached to the secondary IDE port on the motherboard.) So I started all the way up and tried to scan for hardware changes in Computer Management. Still, nothing. I have the software downloaded from the Pioneer site, and that couldn't detect anything. So what else can I try to hopefully get my DVD-ROM recognized by the BIOS? Thanks in advance!

  • Hard drives (SATA/ATA) corrupting

    Hello All, 2 years ago I bought relatives a new computer for christmas and installed Ubuntu on it. Ever since then it has been experiencing problems with the hard drives. The hard drive supplied with the machine was a SATA drive. When it appeared it was having problems (files and folders with invalid encoding started appearing) I replaced the SATA drive with the drive of their previous computer. I replaced it (The replacement) later on, the drive being rather old and thus becoming more prone to the risk of failure. The replacement drive is a IDE drive but the same problems started to appear (files and folders showing up in nautilus with invalid encoding). I fear the files and folders that are showing are existing FS entries, starting to corrupt. As it's happening to both the IDE and SATA drive it's unlikely to be the drives themselves or the IDE/SATA controller, I believe. Any ideas as to what could be causing the (assumed) corruption? EDIT: You're right about the paragraphs. They were there in edit mode but I'm still getting to grips with the whitespace format codes. The system is a "Primo Pro" AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 920 2.80GHz SILENT DDR2, ordered from overclockers.co.uk and nothing has been added to it except for the replacement of the SATA drive with an AMD drive. It would seem unlikely for a barebones system to be underpowered.

    I have a one year old Mac Book Pro that I am trying to get RHEL 5.4 installed on via bootcamp. No matter what I do I can't get the installer to boot. I have tried multiple DVD's and even verified the install works on a new Mac Book Pro. Most of the time the installer simply locks up. I usually use Linux text with all-generic-ide on the boot line. I removed the ide parameter and I just used linux text. The results I get are that a bunch of kernel messages appear then the background turns blue and a thin text box pops up saying its loading ata..... something it disappears too fast for me to read. Then the machine freezes. I pressed the alt function keys to see if I could look at the system log, here is what it says: Alt-f3 says "trying to mount CD device hda" Alt-f4 says status error: hda: lastFailedSense Hda: Failed opcode was: unknown Hda: Lost interrupt Hda: Drive not ready for command Ide-cd: command 0x3 timed out Above this junk it looks like it found the partition because it knew it was 20 GB and listed as /dev/sda3. I think it has something to do with the CD drive, is that possible? Thanks again for the support.   • Minimum specs needed to run 1080p HD movies?

    Hi all, I was wondering how low you could go with hardware that would still be able to smoothly run HD movies. My current plan is around $215 CAD w/o a hard drive: Intel Pentium 4 @ 3.2 GHz - 1GB DDR/SDRAM - 512MB X1600 Pro AGP - 350W PSU - ECS P4VXASD2+ - Bluray/DVD-RW drive. As for the hard drive, could I just get a 7200RPM IDE HDD? Also, I'm planning on installing XP Pro SP3, unless Ubuntu somehow has an advantage. I'm not wanting this to be a media center only computer... just want it to be a normal computer with just enough oomph to play HD movies. Thanks in advance. EDIT1: Forgot to mention that the Bluray/DVD-RW drive is SATA, but I was planning on getting an SATA-IDE adapter or a PCI card with SATA. EDIT2: Oh yes... if I get a PCI card with SATA, would you then recommend I use an SATA hard drive as well? That would leave all the IDE ports on the motherboard unused... is that a good idea?

  • Windows 7 Install: No drives were found

    I was building a computer for my wife with an older SATA hard drive that I had lying around, and when attempting to do a new install of Windows 7 on it, the installer says: "No drives were found. Click Load Driver to provide a mass storage driver for installation." I ran the diskpart command: list volume, and it showed up as "Raw". So, I formatted it to NTFS and then it showed up as a healthy drive in diskpart. I also ran check disk on it with no errors. Windows 7 installer STILL can't find the drive. As far as BIOS settings, I have tried "Native IDE", AHCI, and Both AHCI/IDE mode (SATA slots 0-2 AHCI, 3-4 IDE). I tried all combinations... still "no drives were found". At this point, I'm just scratching my head. Using the installation dos window, I can see and talk to the drive just fine, but the installer just doesn't see it at all. I've even written folders and files to the drive, and it still "can't be seen". Any help would be great. Items of interest: Motherboard model: Gigabyte GA-A75M-UD2H - BIOS Version F5 (latest) Hard drive model: 80GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 ST380817AS (no other drives) Installing Windows 7 using a FAT32 formatted USB Drive, which I've used for other installs

  • Installing Visual Studio Express on Windows 8.1

    I've been trying to install the latest version of Microsoft Visual Studio Express from their website to toy around with the IDE and C# development in general. I have a relatively fresh and completely vanilla installation of Windows 8.1 Professional x64 for this purpose. I come from a Linux background, where installing software (especially software distributed by the maintainer of the OS) is usually done with package managers. First, I tried to look for Visual Studio in the Windows 8 Store. There was one entry, but it did not have an installation button. Instead, it redirected me to their website. From all the products listed under the "Download" section on their website, I decided Visual Studio 2013 Express for Windows Desktop was the best for me. I selected it and clicked on "Install now". An installer program downloaded, and I'm assuming that the installer downloaded the necessary files as it was running. When it was done, it asked for a reboot, to which I obliged. However, I can't seem to find the IDE installed anywhere? It doesn't show up anywhere in the Start menu interface. I can't find any executables that look like they might be the IDE in its installation folder. Running the installer again and selecting "Repair" does download some files, but after its requested reboot, nothing has changed. The only thing that I can find is an advertisement link to "Try other Visual Studio 2013 Products" in my start menu. I suppose my question is what I have to do to run Visual Studio 2013 Express on Windows 8.1? Am I not looking in the right places? Am I doing the installation process wrong? Thanks in advance
