• How should I start with Lisp?

  I've been programming for years now, working my way through various iterations of Blub (BASIC, Assembler, C, C++, Visual Basic, Java, Ruby in no particular order of "Blub-ness") and I'd like to learn Lisp. However, I have a lot of intertia what with limited time (family, full time job etc) and a comfortable happiness with my current Blub (Java). So my question is this, given that I'm someone who would really like to learn Lisp, what would be the initial steps to get a good result that demonstrates the superiority of Lisp in web development? Maybe I'm missing the point, but that's how I would initially see the application of my Lisp knowledge. I'm thinking "use dialect A, use IDE B, follow instructions on page C, question your sanity after monads using counsellor D". I'd just like to know what people here consider to be an optimal set of values for A, B, C and perhaps D. Also some discussion on the relative merit of learning such a powerful language as opposed to, say, becoming a Rails expert. Just to add some more detail, I'll be developing on MacOS (or a Linux VM) - no Windows based approaches will be necessary, thanks. Notes for those just browsing by I'm going to keep this question open for a while so that I can offer feedback on the suggestions after I've been able to explore them. • Oracle 64-bit assembly throws BadImageFormatException when running unit tests

  We recently upgraded to the 64-bit Oracle client. Since then, Visual Studio 2010 unit tests that hit the database (I know, unit tests shouldn't hit the database--they're not perfect) all fail with this error message:Test method MyProject.Test.SomeTest threw exception: System.Reflection.TargetInvocationException: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. ---> System.BadImageFormatException: Could not load file or assembly 'Oracle.DataAccess, Version=4.112.3.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=89b483f429c47342' or one of its dependencies. An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format.I resolved this by changing the test settings to run tests in 64-bit. From the Test menu, go to Edit Test Settings, and pick your settings file. Go to Hosts, and change the "Run tests in 32 bit or 64 bit process" dropdown to "Run tests in 64 bit process on 64 bit machine". Now your tests should run.This fix makes me a little nervous. Visual Studio 2010 and earlier seem to change that file for no apparent reason, add more settings files, etc. If you're not paying attention, you could have TestSettings1.testsettings through TestSettings99.testsettings sitting there and never notice the difference. So it's worth making a note of how to change it in case you have to redo it, and being vigilant about files VS tries to add.I'm not entirely clear on why this was even a problem. Isn't that the point of an MSIL assembly, that it's not specific to the hardware it runs on? An IL disassembler can open the Oracle.DataAccess.dll in question, and in its Runtime property, I see the value "v4.0.30319 / x64". So I guess the assembly was specifically build to target 64-bit platforms only, possibly due to a 64-bit-specific difference in the external Oracle client upon which it depends. Most other assemblies, especially in the .NET Framework, list "msil", and a couple list "x86". So I guess this is another entry in the long list of ways Oracle refuses to play nice with Windows and .NET.If this doesn't solve your problem, you can read others' research into this error, and where to change the same test setting in Visual Studio 2012.

• Formatting HTML lists using CSS

  I'm trying to recreate list in HTML which has clauses and subclauses like this: 1. Main Clause (a) Sub clause (b) Sub clause 2. Another main clause (a) Sub clause The problems I'm running into are: If I use the existing HTML elements (ol and li) there doesn't seem to be a list style for (a) - I can have a. b. c. or A. B. C. but not (a) (b) (c). If I don't use the existing HTML elements and start using span tags, then if a subclause runs beyond the end of the line it appears underneath the clause number, rather than being indented. Like so: (a) Very long subclause which goes over one line when what I really want is the behaviour from lists, which is: (a) Very long subclause which goes over one line Is there any way to get round these two problems at the same time? I'd prefer to use semantic HTML and CSS for styling, but having the clauses spaced correctly is more important than doing things 'the right way'. I may need subsubclauses at some point (i.e. (i), (ii) etc.), so I can't assume that (a) will be the maximum clause depth.

• Wordpress site on EC2 instance suddenly superslow

  Set up a wordpress page the other day following this guide. The site was up and running, loading quickly and all was well, until today. Suddenly, loading the site takes forever and doesn't even work properly, the page shows up in an incomplete fashion. I tried rebooting the instance but that didn't help. The only actions I've taken on the server is to create an elastic IP, and to point a domainname to that IP. But I don't see how that could've slowed down the page. Any thoughts on what could have caused this and on a solution to the problem?

Let me know which one of the following is your favorite article from memory lane. 2007 Two Connections Related Global Variables Explained – @@CONNECTIONS and @@MAX_CONNECTIONS @@CONNECTIONS Returns the number of attempted connections, either successful or unsuccessful since SQL Server was last started. @@MAX_CONNECTIONS Returns the maximum number of simultaneous user connections allowed on an instance of SQL Server. The number returned is not necessarily the number currently configured. Query Editor – Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio This post may be very simple for most of the users of SQL Server 2005. Earlier this year, I have received one question many times – Where is Query Analyzer in SQL Server 2005? I wrote small post about it and pointed many users to that post – SQL SERVER – 2005 Query Analyzer – Microsoft SQL SERVER Management Studio. Recently I have been receiving similar question. OUTPUT Clause Example and Explanation with INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE SQL Server 2005 has a new OUTPUT clause, which is quite useful. OUTPUT clause has access to insert and deleted tables (virtual tables) just like triggers. OUTPUT clause can be used to return values to client clause. OUTPUT clause can be used with INSERT, UPDATE, or DELETE to identify the actual rows affected by these statements. OUTPUT clause can generate a table variable, a permanent table, or temporary table. Even though, @@Identity will still work with SQL Server 2005, however I find the OUTPUT clause very easy and powerful to use. Let us understand the OUTPUT clause using an example. Find Name of The SQL Server Instance Based on database server stored procedures has to run different logic. We came up with two different solutions. 1) When database schema is very much changed, we wrote completely new stored procedure and deprecated older version once it was not needed. 2) When logic depended on Server Name we used global variable @@SERVERNAME. It was very convenient while writing migrating script which depended on the server name for the same database. Explanation of TRY…CATCH and ERROR Handling With RAISEERROR Function One of the developers at my company thought that we can not use the RAISEERROR function in new feature of SQL Server 2005 TRY… CATCH. When asked for an explanation he suggested SQL SERVER – 2005 Explanation of TRY… CATCH and ERROR Handling article as excuse suggesting that I did not give example of RAISEERROR with TRY…CATCH. We all thought it was funny. Just to keep records straight, TRY… CATCH can sure use RAISEERROR function. Different Types of Cache Objects Serveral kinds of objects can be stored in the procedure cache: Compiled Plans: When the query optimizer finishes compiling a query plan, the principal output is compiled plan. Execution contexts: While executing a compiled plan, SQL Server has to keep track of information about the state of execution. Cursors: Cursors track the execution state of server-side cursors, including the cursor’s current location within a resultset. Algebrizer trees: The Algebrizer’s job is to produce an algebrizer tree, which represents the logic structure of a query. Open SSMS From Command Prompt – sqlwb.exe Example This article is written by request and suggestion of Sr. Web Developer at my organization. Due to the nature of this article most of the content is referred from Book On-Line. sqlwbcommand prompt utility which opens SQL Server Management Studio. Squib command does not run queries from the command prompt. sqlcmd utility runs queries from command prompt, read for more information. 2008 Puzzle – Solution – Computed Columns Datatype Explanation Just a day before I wrote article SQL SERVER – Puzzle – Computed Columns Datatype Explanation which was inspired by SQL Server MVP Jacob Sebastian. I suggest that before continuing this article read the original puzzle question SQL SERVER – Puzzle – Computed Columns Datatype Explanation.The question was if the computed column was of datatype TINYINT how to create a Computed Column of datatype INT? 2008 – Find If Index is Being Used in Database It is very often I get a query that how to find if any index is being used in the database or not. If any database has many indexes and not all indexes are used it can adversely affect performance. If the number of indices are higher it reduces the INSERT / UPDATE / DELETE operation but increase the SELECT operation. It is recommended to drop any unused indexes from table to improve the performance. 2009 Interesting Observation – Execution Plan and Results of Aggregate Concatenation Queries If you want to see what’s going on here, I think you need to shift your point of view from an implementation-centric view to an ANSI point of view. ANSI does not guarantee processing the order. Figure 2 is interesting, but it will be potentially misleading if you don’t understand the ANSI rule-set SQL Server operates under in most cases. Implementation thinking can certainly be useful at times when you really need that multi-million row query to finish before the backup fire off, but in this case, it’s counterproductive to understanding what is going on. SQL Server Management Studio and Client Statistics Client Statistics are very important. Many a times, people relate queries execution plan to query cost. This is not a good comparison. Both parameters are different, and they are not always related. It is possible that the query cost of any statement is less, but the amount of the data returned is considerably larger, which is causing any query to run slow. How do we know if any query is retrieving a large amount data or very little data? 2010 I encourage all of you to go through complete series and write your own on the subject. I always remembered the syntax and ha d actually written it down before, but somehow it was not coming to mind quickly this time. I searched online and I ended up on my own article written last year SQL SERVER – Get Last Running Query Based on SPID. I felt that I am getting old because I forgot this really simple syntax. Find Total Number of Transaction on Interval In one of my recent Performance Tuning assignments I was asked how do someone know how many transactions are happening on a server during certain interval. I had a handy script for the same. Following script displays transactions happened on the server at the interval of one minute. You can change the WAITFOR DELAY to any other interval and it should work. 2011 Here are two DMV’s which are newly introduced in SQL Server 2012 and provides vital information about SQL Server. Quick Note about JOIN – Common Questions and Simple Answers In this blog post we are going to talk about join and lots of things related to the JOIN. • HIGH CPU usage by PHP on a VPS Magento Server

  My server running magento is 4gb ram and 4 core cpu. But still i am struggling with the high CPU usage. I only have 10 visitors at any given point of time. I am not sure if the PHP has to take this high % CPU usage. • Recover Windows 7 from Linux Ubuntu?

  I have two partitions and have Linux Ubuntu running on one partition and Windows 7 running on the other. Now when I try to boot from Windows 7, I get an error saying the /system32/winload.exe file is corrupted or deleted. Now I have Windows 7 files on my system but do not have the DVD, I have made USB bootable with Windows 7, but when I boot it with the USB stick, a blue screen is coming on with weird errors messages. Now I am trying to restore my Windows instance to a restore point where it can work normally. How can I do that in my situation?

• dpkg E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error

  I decided to shift around my partitions on my hard drive for a fresh install of Kubuntu. I booted my Ubuntu 10.10 live disc, shifted everything around and attempted to install grub and it didn't work, so I burnt an Ubuntu 12.04 disc and installed it. I got the computer working and wanted to install some packages, but didn't have an internet connection at the time. So (I know this was stupid) I got some debs from previous versions of Ubuntu, as I needed my music, and the other install took a long of time to boot. Once I got my internet connection back, everything worked ok, for a little while. Then I stumbled upon this problem after removing ten broken packages using synaptic: drhax@Spamotard:~$ sudo apt-get install -f Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done The following packages will be REMOVED: libgtk2.0-cil 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 417 not upgraded. 1 not fully installed or removed. • Slapd service won't start, unable to open pid file

  I'm trying to set up a test LDAP-server for some developers but I'm running into some trouble. service slapd start errors so I run /usr/sbin/slapd -d 1 and this gives me the following error at the end: unable to open pid file "/var/run/ldap/slapd.pid": 13 (Permission denied) slapd destroy: freeing system resources. slapd stopped. The rights for /var/run/ldap are as follows: root@pec:/var/run/ldap# ls -ld drwxr-xr-x 2 openldap openldap 60 2012-07-04 20:45 So I don't get why there is still a permission denied. • vsftpd: chroot_local_user causes GNU/TLS-error

  Distro: Ubuntu 12.04.2 Server 32-bit Server client: vsftpd 2.3.5 (from default "main" repository) Problem: Since upgrading from Ubuntu 10.04 to Ubuntu 12.04 (nothing changed on client-side), vsftp has refused to make chroot-jails with the "chroot_local_user" directive on FTP(e/i)S-connections. Try to connect with an FTP user client and upload some files. With my setup, the above listed config works well at this point. Edit /etc/vsftpd.conf and set chroot_local_user= to YES. Make sure that chroot_list_enable= and/or chroot_list_file= are not set. Comment them out if they are. Save and exit. Run sudo restart vsftpd (or sudo service vsftpd restart if you like) in a terminal. Try to connect with an FTP user client. You should see a message more or less like this: GnuTLS error -15: An unexpected TLS packet was received. This is an issue for me, as I do not want FTP-sessions to be able to list files outside the user's home folder. I have checked with several client-side apps, and I get the same results with every one of them. Filezilla is not so good regarding cipher methods nowadays, but as I am able to make an FTP(e)s-connection over TLS (as long as chroot'ing is disabled and ssl_ciphers is set to HIGH) I have a feeling ciphers are not the issue this time, and that I won't find the answer by tweaking configs on the client side. My vsftpd.log stays empty, even though debug_ssl and log_ftp_protocol are enabled, so no info there either.

• Is MS Forefront Add-in for Exchange server detecting HTML/Redirector.C incorrectly?

  Users of a website hosted by our organization occasionally send complaints that our registration confirmation emails are infected with HTML/Redirector.C. They are always using an MS Exchange Server with the MS Forefront for Exchange AV add-in. The thing is, I don't think the detection is legitimate. I think the issue is that the link in the email we send causes a redirect. I should point out that this is done for a legitimate purpose. :) Has anybody run into this before? Naturally, Microsoft provides absolutely no good information on this one: http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Threat/Encyclopedia/Entry.aspx?Name=Trojan%3aHTML%2fRedirector.C&ThreatID=-2147358338 I can't find any other explanation of HTML/Redirector.C on the Internet either. If anyone knows of a real description for this virus that would be greatly appreciated as well.

• DrayTek Vigor 2920(n): VPN with VLAN restrictions?

  Hi, I'm currently installing a DrayTek Vigor 2920n router in a new office. This router is to be used for 2 seperate companies. For one of these companies, the router has a LAN-2-LAN (VPN) connection to a datacenter configured. The other company should not be able to access this other (VPN-)network. I'm aware of the capability of this router to have VLAN's, but I cannot figure out how to configure the VPN-connection to only be accessible for VLAN0 and not for VLAN1. I know I can also add another router to physically split both networks, but we bought the DrayTek with the idea that it could easily have the VPN-connection available for VLAN0 and not for VLAN1. VLAN1 can easily be in another subnet, that's fine, although, I don't know how to configure that on this DrayTek. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance, Dirk

• Backing up SQL Azure

  That's it!!! After many days and nights... and an amazing set of challenges, I just released the Enzo Backup for SQL Azure BETA product (http://www.bluesyntax.net). Clearly, that was one of the most challenging projects I have done so far. Why??? Because to create a highly redundant system, expecting failures at all times for an operation that could take anywhere from a couple of minutes to a couple of hours, and still making sure that the operation completes at some point was remarkably challenging. Some routines have more error trapping that actual code... Here are a few things I had to take into account: Exponential Backoff (explained in another post) Dual dynamic determination of number of rows to backup  Dynamic reduction of batch rows used to restore the data Implementation of a flexible BULK Insert API that the tool could use Implementation of a custom Storage REST API to handle automatic retries Automatic data chunking based on blob sizes Compression of data Implementation of the Task Parallel Library at multiple levels including deserialization of Azure Table rows and backup/restore operations Full or Partial Restore operations Implementation of a Ghost class to serialize/deserialize data tables And that's just a partial list... I will explain what some of those mean in future blob posts. A lot of the complexities had to do with implementing a form of retry logic, depending on the resource and the operation.

• How to remove a partition on a USB drive?

  I got a free promotional USB stick that I want to format for my own purposes. When I inserted it, it automatically opened a browser and launched a web site. I have since disabled autoplay on this computer so that nothing launches when the stick is inserted. But it still shows up as two separate drives, and one of them is a "CD Drive" that I can't format. How can a USB stick contain a "CD Drive?" And more to the point, how can I remove this partition using Windows XP or Ubuntu? Update I previously asked for an XP solution, but finding none, I have tried Ubuntu, also without success. Gparted doesn't see the "CD" portion as a device at all, and from bash, any chmod changes I try tell me that the file system is read-only. Any ideas?

• Feed Reader's - Looking for some suggestions

  I am doing my best to make it a point to keep an eye on some blogs of people in my industry, and am looking for a good feed reader. I use chrome. I live in chrome, and if I am not in Chrome, I am using xterm. Yet, I do get my tweets in Pidgin and do all my talking discussion from that. Maybe it makes sense to integrate something in that? I see web feed readers as a bit too distant to make good use of it (eg, have to open a page, and less 'in your face'). Although, I am a big fan of google stuff and use google apps and google voice and google cals and google docs, etc.. So how is feedburner? I like to preserver time. It'd be interesting if I could read my feeds offline on my laptop or ChromeOS CR-48 with offline websites? Well, would love to hear what you guys are doing and suggest.

• DHCP request error. Send_packet now permitted, How to debug, What does it mean

  Hello I recently installed CSF firewall and have made live a new server which is accepting around 600req/second. Its basically a reverse proxy and I found in pingdom and munin that for a particular time, the response times of the server increased by 3 folds. I looked into logs and exactly at that point, I found loads of entries like this: Feb 27 15:22:09 li235-57 dhclient: DHCPREQUEST of <My IP address> on eth0 to 207.192.68.72 port 67 Feb 27 15:22:09 li235-57 dhclient: send_packet: Operation not permitted Can you help me understand what went wrong and what exactly happened. Is there any settings I should change in CSF or any pointer to debug this further Thanks

• Change programfiles variable on windows

  I have built a computer for a user that asked me for "speed": an SSD was the obvious solution because what he means by speed is "fast boot time". This solved the problem, however the user is not smart enough to remember that he must install programs on D rather than C (c is the ssd, D is an raid 1 hdd). The only solution that comes in my mind is changing programfiles variable such that will point to D rather than C by default. Otherwise, other solutions are ok but I really can't find anything else at the moment. Does anyone have recommendations for how to accomplish changing the default installation directory in Windows?

• Should MVVM ViewModel inject an HTML template for default view?

  I'm working on web application design that includes Knockout.js and have an overall MVVM question: Does it make sense for the ViewModel to automatically inject a default HTML template (pulled from separate file)? More detail: suppose I have a site like this... header... widget 1 widget 2 widget 3 footer ...and widgets 1/2/3 are going to be Knockout.js ViewModels determined at runtime from an overall list of available widgets, each with associated HTML template file. I understand that in MVVM you want the view (HTML template in this case) to be separate from the ViewModel (Javascript file in this case) so that people can edit it separately and possibly provide multiple templates for different "skins". However, it seems like it would also make sense for the ViewModel to point to a default html template that gets automatically used unless the controlling code provides a different one. Am I looking at this correctly? As an example, see this answer on StackOverflow where he recommends injecting the HTML and then the ViewModel. Seems like a one-liner would make more sense in that case, with the possibility of overriding a default template value.

• Visual Studio 2010 Productivity Tips and Tricks-Part 2: Key Shortcuts

  Ask anyone that knows me, and they will confirm that I hate the mouse.  This isn’t because I deny affection to objects that don’t look like their mammalian-named self, but rather for a much more simple and not-insane reason: I have terrible eyesight.  Introduction Thanks to a degenerative eye disease known as Choroideremia, I have learned to rely more on the keyboard which I can feel digital/static positions of keys relative to my fingers, than the much more analog/random position of the mouse.  Now, I would like to share some of the keyboard shortcuts with you now, as I believe that they not only increase my productivity, but yours as well once you know them (if you don’t already of course)...  I share one of my biggest tips for productivity in the conclusion at the end. Visual Studio Key Shortcuts Global Editor Shortcuts These are shortcuts that are available from almost any application running in Windows, however are many times forgotten. Shortcut Action Visual Studio 2010 Functionality Ctrl + X Cut This shortcut works without a selection. If nothing is selected, the entire line that the caret is on is cut from the editor. Ctrl + C Copy This shortcut works without a selection. If nothing is selected, the entire line that the caret is on is copied from the editor. Ctrl + V Paste If you copied an entire line by the method above, the data is pasted in the line above the current caret line. Ctrl + Shift + V Next Clipboard Element Cut/Copy multiple things, and then hit this combo repeatedly to switch to the next clipboard item when pasting. Ctrl + Backspace Delete Previous Will delete the previous word from the editor directly before the caret. If anything is selected, will just delete that. Ctrl + Del Delete Next Word Will delete the next word/space from the editor directly after the caret. If anything is selected, will just delete that. Shift + Del Delete Focused Line Will delete the line from the editor that the caret is on. If something is selected, will just delete that. Ctrl + ? or Ctrl + ? Left/Right by Word This will move the caret left or right by word or special character boundary. Holding Shift will also select the word. Ctrl + F Quick Find Either the Quick Find panel, or the search bar if you have the Productivity Power Tools installed. Ctrl + Shift + F Find in Solution Opens up the 'Find in Files' window, allowing you to search your solution, as well as using regex for pattern matching. F2 Rename File... While not debugging, selecting a file in the solution explorer\navigator and pressing F2 allows you to rename the selected file. Global Application Shortcuts These are shortcuts that are available from almost any application running in Windows, however are many times forgotten... Again... Shortcut Action Visual Studio 2010 Functionality Ctrl + N New File dialog Opens up the 'New File' dialog to add a new file to the current directory in the Solution\Project. Ctrl + O Open File dialog Opens up the 'Open File' dialog to open a file in the editor, not necessarily in the solution. Ctrl + S Save File dialog Saves the currently focused editor tab back to your HDD/SSD. Ctrl + Shift + S Save All... Quickly save all open/edited documents back to your disk. Ctrl + Tab Switch Panel\Tab Tapping this combo switches between tabs quickly. Holding down Ctrl when hitting tab will bring up a chooser window. Building Shortcuts These are shortcuts that are focused on building and running a solution. These are not usable when the IDE is in Debug mode, as the shortcut changes by context. Shortcut Action Visual Studio 2010 Functionality Ctrl + Shift + B Build Solution Starts a build process on the solution according to the current build configuration manager settings. Ctrl + Break Cancel a Building Solution Will cancel a build operation currently in progress. Good for long running builds when you think of one last change. F5 Start Debugging Will build the solution if needed and launch debugging according to the current configuration manager settings. Ctrl + F5 Start Without Debugger Will build the solution if needed and launch the startup project without attaching a debugger. Debugging Shortcuts These are shortcuts that are used when debugging a solution. Shortcut Action Visual Studio 2010 Functionality F5 Continue Execution Continues execution of code until the next breakpoint. Ctrl + Alt + Break Pause Execution Pauses the program execution. Shift + F5 Stop Debugging Stops the current debugging session. NOTE: Web apps will still continue processing after stopping the debugger. Keep this in mind if working on code such as credit card processing. Ctrl + Shift + F5 Restart Debugging Stops the current debugging session and restarts the debugging session from the beginning. F9 Place Breakpoint Toggles/Places a breakpoint in the editor on the current line. Set a breakpoint in condensed code by highlighting the statement first. F10 Step Over Statement When debugging, executes all code in methods/properties on the current line until the next line. F11 Step Into Statement When debugging, steps into a method call so you can walk through the code executed there (if available). Ctrl + Alt + I Immediate Window Open the Immediate Window to execute commands when execution is paused. Navigation Shortcuts These are shortcuts that are used for navigating in the IDE or editor panel. Shortcut Action Visual Studio 2010 Functionality F4 Properties Panel Opens the properties panel for the selected item in the editor/designer/solution navigator (context driven). F12 Go to Definition Press F12 with the caret on a member to navigate to its declaration. With the Productivity tools, Ctrl + Click works too. Ctrl + K Ctrl + T View Call Hierarchy View the call hierarchy of the member the caret is on. Great for going through n-tier solutions and interface implementations! Ctrl + Alt + B Breakpoint Window View the breakpoint window to manage breakpoints and their advanced options. Allows easy toggling of breakpoints. Ctrl + Alt + L Solution Navigator Open the solution explorer panel. Ctrl + Alt + O Output Window View the output window to see build\general output from Visual Studio. Ctrl + Alt + Enter Live Web Preview Only available with the Web Essential plugin. Launches the auto-updating Preview panel. Testing Shortcuts These are shortcuts that are used for running tests in the IDE. Please note, Visual Studio 2010 is all about context. If your caret is within a test method when you use one of these combinations, the combination will apply to that test. If your caret is within a test class, it will apply to that class. If the caret is outside of a test class, it will apply to all tests. Shortcut Action Visual Studio 2010 Functionality Ctrl + R T Run Test(s) Run all tests in the current context without a debugger attached. Breakpoints will not be stopped on. Ctrl + R Ctrl + T Run Test(s) (Debug) Run all tests in the current context with a debugger attached. This allows you to use breakpoints. Substitute A for T from the preceding combos to run/debug ALL tests in the current context. Substitute Y for T from the preceding combos to run/debug ALL impacted/covering tests for a method in the current context. Advanced Editor Shortcuts These are shortcuts that are used for more advanced editing in the editor window. Shortcut Action Visual Studio 2010 Functionality Shift + Alt + ? Shift + Alt + ? Multiline caret up/down Use this combo to edit multiple lines at once. Not too many uses for it, but once in a blue moon one comes along. Ctrl + Alt + Enter Insert Line Above Inserts a blank line above the line the caret is currently on. No need to be at end or start of line, so no cutting off words/code. Ctrl + K Ctrl + C Comment Selection Comments the current selection out of compilation. Ctrl + K Ctrl + U Uncomment Selection Uncomments the current selection into compilation. Ctrl + K Ctrl + D Format Document Automatically formats the document into a structured layout. Lines up nodes or code into columns intelligently. Alt + ? Alt + ? Code line up/down *Use this combo to move a line of code up or down quickly. Great for small rearrangements of code. *Requires the Productivity Power pack from Microsoft. Conclusion This list is by no means meant to be exhaustive, but these are the shortcuts I use regularly every hour/minute of the day. There are still 100s more in Visual Studio that you can discover through the configuration window, or by tooltips. Something that I started doing months ago seems to have interest in my office.. In my last post, I talked about how I hated a cluttered UI. One of the ways that I aimed to resolve that was by systematically cleaning up the toolbars week by week. First day, I removed ALL icons that I already knew shortcuts to, or would never use them (Undo in a toolbar?!). Then, every week from that point on, I make it a point to remove an icon/two from the toolbar and make an effort to remember its key combination. I gain extra space in the toolbar area, AND become more productive at the same time! I hope that you found this article interesting or at least somewhat informative.. Maybe a shortcut or two you didn't know. I know some of them seem trivial, but I often see people going to the edit menu for Copy/Paste... Thought a refresher might be helpful!
