  • Need help with many-to-many relationships....

    I have a student and faculty table. The primary key for student is studendID (SID) and faculty's primary key is facultyID, naturally. Student has an advisor column and a requested advisor column, which are foreign key to faculty. That's simple enough, right? However, now I have to throw in dates. I want to be able to view who their advisor was for a certain quarter (such as 2009 Winter) and who they had requested. The result will be a table like this: Year | Term | SID | Current | Requested ------------------------------------------------ 2009 | Winter | 860123456 | 1 | NULL 2009 | Winter | 860445566 | 3 | NULL 2009 | Winter | 860369147 | 5 | 1 And then if I feel like it, I could also go ahead and view a different year and a different term. I am not sure how these new table(s) will look like. Will there be a year table with three columns that are Fall, Spring and Winter? And what will the Fall, Spring, Winter table have? I am new to the art of tables, so this is baffling me... Also, I feel I should clarify how the site works so far now. Admin can approve student requests, and what happens is that the student's current advisor gets overwritten with their request. However, I think I should not do that anymore, right?

  • Object equality in context of hibernate / webapp

    How do you handle object equality for java objects managed by hibernate? In the 'hibernate in action' book they say that one should favor business keys over surrogate keys. Most of the time, i do not have a business key. Think of addresses mapped to a person. The addresses are keeped in a Set and displayed in a Wicket RefreshingView (with a ReuseIfEquals strategy). I could either use the surrogate id or use all fields in the equals() and hashCode() functions. The problem is that those fields change during the lifetime ob the object. Either because the user entered some data or the id changes due to JPA merge() being called inside the OSIV (Open Session in View) filter. My understanding of the equals() and hashCode() contract is that those should not change during the lifetime of an object. What i have tried so far: equals() based on hashCode() which uses the database id (or super.hashCode() if id is null). Problem: new addresses start with an null id but get an id when attached to a person and this person gets merged() (re-attached) in the osiv-filter. lazy compute the hashcode when hashCode() is first called and make that hashcode @Transitional. Does not work, as merge() returns a new object and the hashcode does not get copied over. What i would need is an ID that gets assigned during object creation I think. What would be my options here? I don't want to introduce some additional persistent property. Is there a way to explicitly tell JPA to assign an ID to an object? Regards

    I am a new to db4o. I have a big problem with persistance of a graph of objects. I am trying to migrate from old persistance component to new, using db4o. I tryied modifying it to $var = JApplication::getInstance($id, $config, $prefix); and returnig it but it doesn't work.   • A C# Refactoring Question...

    I came accross the following code today and I didn't like it. It's fairly obvious what it's doing but I'll add a little explanation here anyway: Basically it reads all the settings for an app from the DB and the iterates through all of them looking for the DB Version and the APP Version then sets some variables to the values in the DB (to be used later). I looked at it and thought it was a bit ugly - I don't like switch statements and I hate things that carry on iterating through a list once they're finished. So I decided to refactor it. My question to all of you is how would you refactor it? Or do you think it even needs refactoring at all?     I'm having a problem with optional function parameter in C++ What I'm trying to do is to write function with optional parameter which is passed by reference, so that I can use it in two ways (1) and (2), but on (2) I don't really care what is the value of mFoobar. To determine when the current record was to provide values (next and previous) or the value would be blank (new button) pass a boolean argument into the method. If data from the current record was to be used as fill values, pass true for both previous and next button code after moving the record pointer. If the new button was pressed and want to fill with blank values, pass false to the method. Inside the method, use a conditional expression to evaluate the boolean variable. If true, The appropriate get----() resultset method is used to fill the JTextFields. If false, fill them with "". The .setText() method of the JTextField is used to fill each JTextField. Make sure the fillTextFields method throws the appropriate exception. I understand and have the previous and next button methods passing true, while the new button method is passing false, but I don't quite understand how to set up the fillTextFields() method correctly or how to "throw the appropriate exception"... Any help would really be appreciated, thank you!

Unfortunately my Request.Browser.Platform, along with a few other things is returning "Unknown" on both my iPad Mac OSX (Snow Leopard) and on Windows7 Does anyone know of a good advanced .browser file out there that does the same thing for non mobile devices as the MDBF does for mobile devices?

Is there anyway to do a dynamic cast of a generic interface. I have tried adding a non generic interface but the system is looses objects in the Loc container. Thanks Phil

However, I am not sure if I should check if the collections contain the same elements before I start copying, or if I should just copy regardless. Why is that? I'm wanting it to be nested inside the first branch under a name like, "types". I think my question has more to do with Php array manipulation, but I'm not the best with that. I initialize the JumpLists every time the app starts and I AddRecent() to the JumpList every time I open a project in the app. Something is missing becuase the JumpLists are simply not showing up when you right click the app's icon in the Taskbar. I got one file to show up once but that's it! Initialization: private void InitializeJumpLists() { if (TaskbarManager.IsPlatformSupported) { JumpList recentJumpList = null; JumpList frequentJumpList = null; TaskbarManager.Instance.ApplicationId = Application.ProductName; recentJumpList = JumpList.CreateJumpList(); recentJumpList.KnownCategoryToDisplay = JumpListKnownCategoryType.Recent; recentJumpList.Refresh(); frequentJumpList = JumpList.CreateJumpList(); frequentJumpList.KnownCategoryToDisplay = JumpListKnownCategoryType.Frequent; frequentJumpList.Refresh(); } } Opening the Project: private void OpenProject(string path, bool isFromRecentFilesList) { DialogResult result = ConfirmProjectClosing(); if (result == DialogResult.Yes) Save(); else if (result == DialogResult.Cancel) return; using (new Wait()) { //Code here opens the project, etc. //Try to add the file to the Jump List. if (TaskbarManager.IsPlatformSupported) JumpList.AddToRecent(path); //Code here finished up. } } What am I missing?
