  • Killing a program if it displays a dialog box (devenv.com running under CruiseControl.net)

    I have CruiseControl.net running Visual Studio (2005/2008 - using devenv.com) as we need to build deployment projects (.vdproj). At times, for various reasons devenv decides that even though it was run from the command line, using the devenv.com varient, it still wants to put up a dialog box. Now, as it's running under CruiseControl.net on a remote server this is never seen and the only syptom of this is that the build eventually times out. When the build is still in progress a look at the tasks shows devenv running but not consuming any processor power. Is there a handy utility through which could run devenv.com which basically watches the program it starts up and basically kills it if it dares to display a dialog box of any kind?

    I have a VPS and I want to make mysql DB accept connection externally (from my PC for instance). I have Debian Linux installed on the server. I checked some tutorials online and they said to comment out: bind-address = 127.0.0.1 But this didn't seem to help! is there anything specific for VPSs? or Am I missing something else? The command that runs mysql is: /usr/sbin/mysqld --basedir=/usr --datadir=/var/lib/mysql --user=mysql --pid-file=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid --skip-external-locking --port=3306 --socket=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock

  • Adding NavigationControl to a TabBar Application containing UITableViews

    Hi, I'm new to iPhone dev and wanted to get advice on the general design pattern / guide for putting a certain kind of app together. I'm trying to build a TabBar type application. One of the tabs needs to display a TableView and selecting a cell from within the table view will do something else - maybe show another table view or a web page. I need a Navigation Bar to be able to take me back from the table view/web page. The approach I've taken so far is to: Create an app based around UITabBarController as the rootcontroller i.e. @interface MyAppDelegate : NSObject <UIApplicationDelegate> { IBOutlet UIWindow *window; IBOutlet UITabBarController *rootController; } Create a load of UIViewController derived classes and associated NIBs and wire everything up in IB so when I run the app I get the basic tabs working.   • Cross-compiling a Python script on Linux into a Windows executable

    I have a Python script that I'd like to compile into a Windows executable. Now, py2exe works fine from Windows, but I'd like to be able to run this from Linux. I do have Windows on my development machine, but Linux is my primary dev platform and I'm getting kind of sick of rebooting into Windows just to create the .exe. Any ideas? PS: I am aware that py2exe doesn't exactly compile the python file as much as package your script with the Python interpreter. But either way, the result is that you don't need Python installed to run the script.

  • Best compiled language for Mac OS X and Linux compatibility

    We need to write some software that will compile and run on both an Mac OS X server and Ubuntu. We would love to use Objective-C with all of its Cocoa goodness, however the GNUstep implementations of the parts we are using are broken (in the latest Ubuntu package anyway.) In light of this should we use C++ (I would really rather not), C or something else that we have not thought of? It is a server/back-end process that is very resource intensive, Java and other interpreted versions of this software perform much worse than the Objective-C proof of concept we have written, hence we now wish to re-write in a "compiled[1]" language. (NB: Some people might consider this subjective, however at the end of the day we do need to get a job done, there has to be a reasonably appropriate correct answer here). [1] Compiled to native CPU instructions, not compiled into "byte codes" that then have to be run by an interpreter.

    Hello, I have to create an app that will read in some info from a db, process the data, write changes back to the db, and then send an email with these changes to some users or groups. I will be writing this in c#, and this process must be run once a week at a particular time. This will be running on a Windows 2008 Server. In the past, I would always go the route of creating a windows service with a timer and setting the time/day for it to be run in the app.config file so that it can be changed and only have to be restarted to catch the update. Recently, though, I have seen blog posts and such that recommend writing a console application and then using a scheduled task to execute it. I have read many posts talking to this very issue, but have not seen a definitive answer about which process is better. What do any of you think? Thanks for any thoughts.

  • JavaFX Threading issue - GUI freezing while method call ran.

    Hi everyone, I hoped someone might be able to help as I'm a little stumped. I have a javafx class which runs a user interface, which includes a button to read some text out loud. When you press it, it invokes a Java object which uses the FreeTTS java speech synth to read out loud a String, which all works fine. The problem is, when the speech is being read out, the program stops completely until its completed. I'm not an expert on threaded applications, but I understand that usually if I extend the Thread class, and provided my implementation of the speech synth code inside an overridden run method, when I call start on the class it "should" create a new Thread, and run this code there, allowing the main thread which has the JavaFX GUI on to continue as normal. Any idea why this isn't the case? Thanks a lot in advance!

    Named works great. It creates a pid in /var/run/named/named.pid as expected. It is listening on port 953 as shown by the log: Apr 20 14:42:38 guchuko named[9115]: command channel listening on 127.0.0.1#953 But whenever I try to run "rndc reload" I get: rndc: 'reload' failed: permission denied What file is it being denied permission to ? It doesn't log anything so I don't know why it's not working.   • Using IoC and Dependency Injection, how do I wrap an existing implementation with a new layer of imp

    I'm trying to figure out how this would be done in practice, so as not to violate the Open Closed principle. Say I have a class called HttpFileDownloader that has one function that takes a url and downloads a file returning the html as a string. This class implements an IFileDownloader interface which just has the one function. So all over my code I have references to the IFileDownloader interface and I have my IoC container returning an instance of HttpFileDownloader whenever an IFileDownloader is Resolved. Then after some use, it becomes clear that occasionally the server is too busy at the time and an exception is thrown. I decide that to get around this, I'm going to auto-retry 3 times if I get an exception, and wait 5 seconds in between each retry. So I create HttpFileDownloaderRetrier which has one function that uses HttpFileDownloader in a for loop with max 3 loops, and a 5 second wait between each loop. So that I can test the "retry" and "wait" abilities of the HttpFileDownloadRetrier I have the HttpFileDownloader dependency injected by having the HttpFileDownloaderRetrier constructor take an IFileDownloader. So now I want all Resolving of IFileDownloader to return the HttpFileDownloaderRetrier. But if I do that, then HttpFileDownloadRetrier's IFileDownloader dependency will get an instance of itself and not of HttpFileDownloader. So I can see that I could create a new interface for HttpFileDownloader called IFileDownloaderNoRetry, and change HttpFileDownloader to implement that. But that means I'm changing HttpFileDownloader, which violates Open Closed. Or I could implement a new interface for HttpFileDownloaderRetrier called IFileDownloaderRetrier, and then change all my other code to refer to that instead of IFileDownloader. But again, I'm now violating Open Closed in all my other code. So what am I missing here? How do I wrap an existing implementation (downloading) with a new layer of implementation (retrying and waiting) without changing existing code?   • Missing backslashes in filename using C#

    Hi, I have a string literal as follows: string filename = @"C:\myfolder\myfile.jpg"; When I use File.Exists(filename) it works most of the time but sometimes I get an error saying the following file doesn't exist: C:myfoldermyfile.jpg Something seems to strip the backslashes out of the filename. This code is sometimes accessed via an ajax request. Does anyone know why/how this could be happening?   • Why am I getting "Enter Parameter Value" when running my MS Access query?

    In my query, I use the IIF function to assign either "Before" or "After" to a field named BeforeOrAfter using AS. When I run this query, however, the "Enter Parameter Value" dialog appears, requesting a value for BeforeOrAfter. If I remove BeforeOrAfter DESC from the ORDER BY clause, I don't get the dialog. Why does it ask me to enter a parameter value for "BeforeOrAfter" when I run this query? Note: I tried using brackets, single quotes, double quotes, etc., but none of that made any difference.
