• Domain registration and DNS, what am I actually paying for? [on hold]

  Long story short I'm quite confused as to exactly what is offered by domain registration and dns service sites. When I go to the url "http://google.com", my PC connects to a name server and gets the IP for "google.com", then connects to the IP and says, give me the page for "http://google.com". AFAIK there are many name servers and they all cache these bits of information in some hierarchical network, but ultimately a DNS record must come from a single source (not sure what this is called). There are different kinds of records, that might not an IP but an alias/redirect to other records for example. Lets say I want my own domain name for some server. Maybe it even has a static IP but I want a nicer thing for people to remember, or my ISP assigns dynamic IPs and I want a URL that always works, or my website is hosted on a shared machine so the browser needs to send "http://mydnsname.com" to the webserver to distinguish it from other requests to the same IP but for different sites. Registering a domain costs a small amount of money per year. Where does this money go, not that I'm complaining :P? Is that really all it costs to maintain the entire DNS system of nameservers? If I just register the domain and nothing else, what do I get? Is that just reserving a name or hosting WHOIS information or have I paid for a dns recrord to be hosted? Can a domain alone have a record, such as an IP or be an alias to another? A bunch of sites out there offer other services, in addition to domain registration (I'm assuming they register the domain through another party for me). One example is "dynamic DNS" (DDNS), but isn't this just a regular DNS record that's updated regularly? Does it cost extra to update more often? Without a DDNS, can a DNS record still point to an IP? I've also seen the term "managed DNS" and have no idea where that fits in.

• What's your experience with female programmers?

  Let me start by saying I'm female, but every single other female programmer I've known has been pretty terrible. The extent of their knowledge seems to be copy/paste and modify some values. Quite often they don't even try to learn new concepts, or understand what they're doing. I'm not saying good female programmers aren't out there, just that the ratio of good/bad programmers seems much worse then males. Perhaps its because everyone feels they have to give female programmers a chance to prove they are not biased? Or is this just me?? What has your experiences been with them? UPDATE: Just want to say thanks for all the responses. I've learned some interesting things and am happy to know that female programmers have such support :) My experience has been very limited with them but all bad, and I agree that it is probably due to my small sample size (around 5). I wasn't trying to be sexist with such a question, I just wanted to find out if it was really that abnormal to be a female programmer. I'm abnormal about a lot of things you'd expect from a female... I play video games in most of my spare time, I liked Math so much I completed my entire math book during christmas break one year (What can I say, I found the subject interesting), I'm not very social, I dislike shopping, I only have 2 pairs of shoes, my significant other doesn't work but does all the housework/laundry/etc... but anyways, thanks :)

  For some reason recently I've been getting this error in my apache error log on my server. We have a single instance of memcached running on our Mac OSX 10.7 server. (20014)Internal error: Unknown memcached error while writing: Could not find specified socket in poll list. I can't find anything about this error message online :.   As the title says, what are the existing online storage solutions that provide: unlimited storage automatic backup and allow for an unlimited number of computers (use not tied to a single computer)? There are several existing questions on this site related to online storage solutions, but none that is specifically targeted to what I want, so I thought I'd ask the question. This wikipedia article lists some of them, are there others? How do they compare in terms of price, feature set and ease of use? Update: Kinda disappointed no one has any answers to this so far. For unlimited space and computers, I'd say that's pretty good. Does anyone have experience with CrashPlan or any other of the above solutions?

It has been just 15 months since I changed role from what at Microsoft we call an “Individual Contributor” (IC) to a managerial role where ICs report to me. Part of being a manager entails sharing career tips with your team and some of those I have put up on my blog over the last year (and hope to continue to next year): Effectiveness and Efficiency, Lead, Follow, or Get out of the way, and Perfect is the enemy of “Good Enough”. 2. It has also been a 15 months that I joined the Visual Studio Diagnostics team, and we have shipped many capabilities in Visual Studio 2013. • System can't sleep, can't shutdown (might be networking related)

  I speculate it's networking related since I could only shut down my system if I do /etc/init.d/networking stop first. If I tried to put the system to sleep, it disconnect the network then reconnect it automatically, never goes to sleep. I uninstalled the network manager, then /etc/init.d/networking stop will not help shutdown the system anymore. When I boot into the OS, there were some warning about Unknown job:S20acpid,S20network-interface, S20network-manager . I got some advices to do update-rc.d -f to remove all those script, which I am not certain if it's right thing to do. The messages are gone but the problem remains. When I tried to restart, I used to get this message It doesn't seem to be the modem manager since I later removed it. Once upon a time, the fronze shutting down/restarting can be restarted when I presses Ctrl+Alt+Delete, and it says something like networking is stopped externally. If I log in single user mode, and shutdown or reboot, it show this screen I also tried GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT = "acpi=force" This is a Ubuntu 12.04 running on Thinkpad T520, not new installation, no such problems occurred before.

Here are the labels in the correct order according to that study – and remember, “Teaching” here means one student explaining something to another: It isn’t really that surprising to learn that we comprehend best when we have to teach a subject to someone else, and you can see that the “participation factor” is the key in the learning methods. The real shocker was the retention level at the various learning modes – lecture was down near the single digits! What does this have to do with databases or the DBA? Well, we all need to learn new things – and many of us are asked to teach others a new task. To be a good teacher, we have to know how a student learns best – and of course that makes us better students as well. • Colour Issues in OSX Terminal ssh'd to Ubuntu terminal

  In the OSX terminal, I'm having some colour issues. If i am working locally, there are no colours. If i ssh into my opensolaris machine (using screen inside ssh) there are no colours. If i then ssh into my ubuntu virtualmachine, and say, vim edit a file, the colours are completely broken. On quitting vim, it then keeps the broken colours and applies them to everything until i force a terminal bell. I assume this is a misconfiguration of the ubuntu machines colours, or a mismatching of terminal emulators. What is the best fix in this instance.

• OpenLDAP and Samba, can't log onto Samba share from Windows

  The former jackass IT-guy that I'm taking over for had a Samba share setup on a Fedora server that uses our OpenLDAP server to authenticate users who want to log in from Windows. We recently added a new employee and I jumped through the LDAP hoops to add them to the system. However, I can't seem to use their login to access the Samba share. I'm looking through the LDAP settings and Groups and comparing the new user account to existing ones, and I can't figure out what settings in LDAP are required for this user to be able to access the Samba share. Of course the former idiotic IT-guy didn't document a single thing and has all sorts of weird setups on the network. So I'm at a bit of a loss on knowing what to look for here. Where should I start? On the server that is hosting the Samba share, he has samba running obviously but also has smbldap-tools loaded as well.

• Advantages to Server Scripting languages over Client Side Scripting languages

  There are numerous advantages to server scripting languages over client side scripting languages in regards to creating web sites that are more compelling compared to a standard static site. Server side scripts are executed on a web server during the compilation of data to return to a client. These scripts allow developers to modify the content that is being sent to the user prior to the return of the data to the user as well as store information about the user. In addition, server side scripts allow for a controllable environment in which they can be executed. This cannot be said for client side languages because the developer cannot control the users’ environment compared to a web server. Some users may turn off client scripts, some may be only allow limited access on the system and others may be able to gain full control of the environment.  I have been developing web applications for over 9+ years, and I have used server side languages for most of the applications I have built.  Here is a list of common things I have developed with server side scripts. List of Common Generic Functionality: Send Email FTP Files Security/ Access Control Encryption URL rewriting Data Access Data Creation I/O Access The one important feature server side languages will help me with on my website is Data Access because my component will be backed with a SQL server database. I believe that form validation is one instance where I might see server side and client side scripts used interchangeably because it does not matter how or where the data is validated as long as the data that gets inserted is valid.

• Vim: Use different ~/.vim/plugin/ directories for different versions of vim?

  Like many of you, my custom Vim configuration is stored in my ~/.vimrc, with the plugins, colors, etc. stored under ~/.vim/plugins, ~/.vim/colors, etc. I want to share a single Vim configuration among many servers. Some of these servers run Vim 7, some run the older Vim 6. Most Vim plugins are intended for Vim 7, but older versions still exist for those of us on older systems. See DirDiff for an example. If I am on a system which runs Vim 6, how can I configure Vim to only use Vim 6-compatible plugins? I was thinking about storing older plugins in a subdirectory like ~/.vim/plugins6/ and keep the Vim plugins in ~/.vim/plugins, but then how can I tell Vim6 to ignore ~/.vim/plugins and use ~/.vim/plugins6 instead?

• Thread Synchronization and Synchronization Primitives

  When considering synchronization in an application, the decision truly depends on what the application and its worker threads are going to do. I would use synchronization if two or more threads could possibly manipulate the same instance of an object at the same time. An example of this in C# can be demonstrated through the use of storing data in a static object. A static object is initialized once per application and the data within the object can be accessed by all threads. I would use the synchronization primitives to prevent any data from being manipulated by multiple threads simultaneously. This would reduce any data corruption from occurring within the object. On the other hand if all the threads used non static objects and were independent of the other tasks there would be no need to use synchronization. Synchronization Primitives in C#: Basic Blocking Locking Signaling Non-Blocking Synchronization Constructs The Basic Blocking methods include Sleep, Join, and Task.Wait.  These methods force threads to wait until other threads have completed. In addition, these methods can also force a thread to wait a set amount of time before continuing to work.   The Locking primitive prevents a thread from entering a critical section of code while another thread is in the same critical section.  If another thread attempts to enter a locked code, it will wait, until the code block is released. The Signaling primitive allows a thread to temporarily pause work until receiving a notification from another thread that it is ok to continue working. The Signaling primitive removes the need for polling.The Non-Blocking Synchronization Constructs protect access to a common field by calling upon processor primitives.

• Hot deploying with Tomcat Manager fails because file already exists

  Tomcat beginner question that I hope will help many. Could someone explain how TomCat hot deploy is supposed to work. We have a currently deployed 'TomCatTest', and we want to fix a small bug in 'TomCatTest' with no downtime for users. We are using the Tomcat Manager console, and just trying to upload a file there. • Save GMail attachments directly to Google Drive

  What makes Google Drive attractive is it ability to play nice with other Google offerings like Google Docs, GMail, Android mobiles & tablets. Google Drive is well integrated with Google Docs and every document you create is automatically saved on Google Drive. Google Drive’s integration with other services like GMail may be in progress at Google, but enthusiastic community developers has released a plugin to integrate with GMail. The Google Chrome plugin “Gmail Attachments To Drive” lets you automatically save GMail attachments to Google Drive with a single click. Once the plugin is installed it adds a link “Save To Drive” next to each attachment displayed on GMail and on clicking, it automatically saves the files to Google Drive. I tested the plugin by saving attachments like PDFs, MS Word documents and Images to Google Drive and it worked very well.  I don’t have any complaints on the plugin except couple of feature requests. If the plugin can provide option “Save All Files To Drive” it will be very much helpful to save all attachment of an email at one shot. Also it would be great if the developer can extend it to Firefox too. Anyways it’s a great plugin for Google Drive users and worth checking it out. • How do I resolve the message "Validating WSFC quorum vote configuration - Action Required."

  I have a 3 node AlwaysOn Availability Group on a 3 node WSFC using node majority. 2 nodes are setup as synchronous with automatic fail-over, the 3rd is setup as asynchronous with manual fail-over. When I try to fail-over using the GUI, I get a warning as shown in the screenshot. There is no warning or error if I fail-over with T-SQL. Adding a file share to the quorum doesn't help. The only way I can resolve the warning is to remove the asynchronous sql instance from the 3rd node (it remains part of the WSFC). Either way, the AlwaysOn dashboard says quorum is OK. Am I missing something? Is this a bug in the GUI that I should just ignore? Clicking "Action Required" gives the following error:

A developer can record sound at the same time they're capturing a transaction or by adding sound after recording, on a frame-by-frame basis. • Backup and Restore ADAM database

  I was trying to backup and restore an ADAM database to a different server the other day. I copied all files under "Program Files/Microsoft ADAM" folder to the same path in the destination server and started the ADAM service in the destination server up. Although the service come back up successfully and I was able to connect to the instance with ADAM ADSI Edit mmc snap-in, I found I had to reset every single user's password before they can login again. Has anyone got this issue before? Is the password encrypted with the server IP address or something like that?

• NAT: Exposing SQL Server 2008 Express to the internet

  Hi, I have a Windows Server 2003 SP2 machine with SQL Server 2008 Express installed. I have my network configured with a NAT. Internal clients can access the instance of SQL Server without a problem. I would like to enable SQL Server to be accessible from anywhere on the the internet. I am not sure how to allow my NAT firewall to allow that. I tried adding the port 1443 to it but I still can't access it from a remote machine. How can you make a given SQL Server available to the WAN? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
