• How to install programs downloaded from the internet?

  I've downloadad the latest XAMPP file, to install it into Ubuntu 13.04. After downloading the file, I just can run it. I've double click it (and I've tried right click and clicking "open", whith the same result). All the answer I get is this message: Could not display “xampp-linux-1.8.3-1-installer.run”. There is no application installed for “executable” files. Do you want to search for an application to open this file? I've tried searching for an application, with no result... Also, I haven't found any questions related to this issue with the 13.04 Unity version... I've tried this solution, with no result. Please note that this isn't a Xampp question, the same happened to me when I tried to install Skype. UPDATE: I've tried this solution: cd ~/Downloads chmod +x myfile.run sudo sh myfile.run And I've got this error: Syntax error: "(" unexpected What should I do? Thanks!

• Running the application with F5 gives a message saying "\bin\Debug\Infrastructure.Layout.dll was not found"

  The problem here is the ProfileCatalog.xml file refers to the old assesmbly namesdlls. It does not get updated when the assembly names change. Steps to fix this issue: 1. Open the ProfileCatalog.xml file in the Shell project, and you'll find there are three ModuleInfo configuration items that need to have the solution name prefixed. 2. • Ubuntu 12.04 Responsiveness Extremely Slow on Nvidia 8800?

  Just installed 12.04... This is the first time I run Ubuntu with the Unity UI, not a pleasant experience. The responsiveness is extremely slow (10s after a mouseclick), the screen flickers, etc, all right after logging in. Switching the display driver from Nvidia current to post-release doesn't help at all. What now? Can't go back, but Ubuntu is useless to me right now. What can I do? (The system is a Intel 4x2.4Ghz with 4Gb RAM and a Nvidia 8800.)

• Installing 12.04 on a Dell Dimension 2200

  I'm attempting to install Ubuntu from a 12.04 live CD. A few boots have gotten me (initframs) in BusyBox. During one attempt, it actually said it had loaded Ubuntu and gave me a command prompt, before quickly taking it away. After the working attempt, the HDD was removed from the BIOS menu for some reason, but was auto-detected on a boot into Windows. I haven't got a clue what I'm doing wrong. I don't get the little Ubuntu graphical splash while it boots either, but F6 (or rather spamming many keys) will display a list of the various [starting]/[stopping] it's doing.

• Could not write bytes: broken pipe - looking for log of removed packages

  I have a dual boot system with 12.04 and windows 7. Ubuntu worked fine yesterday but this morning upon boot I get subject. Searched the forums and unsuccessful with recovery. I tried sudo gedit /var/log/apt/history.log to see the log of removed packages, but get the following... ** (gedit:976): WARNING **: Command line 'dbus-launch --autolaunch=2d7d18532e9953bc8a2b852e00000007 --binary-syntax --close-stderr' exited with non-zero exit status 1: Autolaunch error: X11 initialization failed.\n Cannot open display: Run 'gedit --help' to see a full list of available command line options. • OKI-B2540 printer doesn't print?

  There is a driver for the OKI-B2520, and it is automatically selected when the printer is connected. From looking at various websites, it seems like the B2500, B2520, and B2540 all work perfectly fine with the OKI-B2520 driver, so I let it install that. Everything went smoothly, the printer shows up as available, and I can queue jobs without any problems, and they disappear after a few seconds. However, nothing actually comes out. There is no error message on the printer display, or from Ubuntu. This is the output from the CUPS error log: http://pastebin.com/S6ifZAup So my question is: What is wrong??

• Old school trick that I forgot

  If you have to support some older Winforms you might like to remember this.  When opening a MessageBox to display that the user entered incorrect information, if you are doing so from a dialog, catch the DialogResult of the MessageBox and then set  this.DialogResult = DialogResult.None; to prevent the dialog from closing if you want the user to try again.  Otherwise, it will close the dialog box and return to the section of code that called it.Note:  You do not have to catch the DialogResult from the MessageBox.  You can still set this after the return from the call to the MessageBox.  Just make sure to do either but exiting the body of the dialog itself.

• Alternative to TOP in SQL Server and Oracle.

• How do I add Different Screens to my C#/XNA Game?

  I'm working on a Pong clone in XNA. Gameplay-wise, I have it where I want it to be. I want to add a title screen and some other screens to it like a menu, as well as a screen for the Winning/Losing results. I've tried the Game State Management Example on the App Hub site, but It's very complicated and I haven't been able to make sense of it. Is there a simpler way? I'm hoping for a solution that can be used in other projects too. Plus I'd like to know how to actually create menu items (basically, how do I display the different options on it, and highlight them, etc).

• Replace broken image with noimage icon using Jquery

  Sometimes when the image isn't available on server, the web page will show a broken image. so we can display a "no image available" image for good user experience. • Distorted text in programs

  I've installed Ubuntu 11 with gnome and in some point the text in the programs becomes unreadable like this. It's not only the text, but even the desktop background looks awful. I've tried to add section in xorg.conf, but it didn't helped out. • New code release today - 2011.1.4.2

  Wow, two blog entries in the same day! When I wrote the large 'Quota' blog entry below, I did not realize there would be a micro-code update going out the same evening. So here it is. Code 2011.1.4.2 has just been released. You can get the readme file for it here: https://wikis.oracle.com/display/FishWorks/ak-2011.04.24.4.2+Release+Notes Download it, of course, through the MOS website. It looks like it fixes a pretty nasty bug. Get it if you think it applies to you. Unless you have a great reason NOT to upgrade, I would strongly advise you to upgrade to 2011.1.4.2. Why? Because the readme file says they STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU ALL UPGRADE TO THIS CODE IMMEDIATELY using LOTS OF CAPITAL LETTERS. That's good enough for me. Be sure to run the health check like the readme tells you to.

• Ubuntu dual-boot errors in 13.10

  Specs: Lenovo U530, 500 GB HDD, 8 GB RAM, 64-bit, i7 Intel Processor with integrated graphics I'm trying to dual-boot Ubuntu but I have the following problems: After booting from live DVD, the GRUB loads but with the following errors: "Could not open '\EFI\BOOT\fallback.efi': 14" and "error: variable 'root' isn't set. I have disabled Fast Startup and SecureBoot before booting the disc. Also, after trying to "Try Ubuntu without installing" my screen, and DVD Drive shutoff momentarily but then my drive boots up but my screen remains black and sometimes flashes but doesn't display anything. I will greatly appreciate any help. P.S. I don't have any previous version of Ubuntu installed so this is NOT an upgrade from a previous version.

• Image caching when rendering the same images on different pages

  I'm told to think about caching of images that will be displayed on the page. The images will be repeated throughout the website on different pages and I'm told to figure out the best way to cache these images. There could be few to dozen of images on single page. Here's few questions: Will browser caching work to display the same images across different web pages? Should I rather store images in stringified form in a memory instead, using JavaScript arrays? Store them on hard drive using 'localStorage'? What would be easiest yet best option for this? Are there any other alternatives? How to force cache? Any other information would be greatly appreciated...

But I'm worried that there will be legal issues. I'm sorry but I do not know what is the process in doing this. I noticed for example the game Bejeweled Blitz. • Best practices for launching a new software version

  I rebuilt a web app to replace a version that we have been using for the last 3-4 years. We have a few thousand clients and a few hundred active users per day. The functionality is basically the same. The new version is a little bit faster with a few enhancement features and there are a lot of behind the scenes changes that the clients will never see. The UI is quite different but ultimately much easier to use and navigate. How should I go about having our clients stop using the old system and start using the new one? I am currently putting together a video that will play on the web site as well as within the app. The video will go through the pages and focus on some key changes. I was also thinking about an intro page that will display once the user logs in and explains some of the features.

• Possible to pass pygame data to memory map block?

  I am building a matrix out of addressable pixels and it will be run by a Pi (over the ethernet bus). The matrix will be 75 pixels wide and 20 pixels tall. As a side project, I thought it would be neat to run pong on it. I've seen some python based pong tutorials for Pi, but the problem is that they want to pass the data out to a screen via pygame.display function. I have access to pass pixel information using a memory map block, so is there anyway to do that with pygame instead of passing it out the video port? • 12.04 Dell GX260 resolution for 82845G/GL will not go greater than 1024x768

  I am a newbie to Linux and have installed 12.04 on to an old Dell GX260, I was hoping that I could slowly extract myself from Microsoft - but unless I can fix this simplest of problems I am thinking that this version of Linux is not ready for me yet!! I have read various posts but none seem to match, I believe the driver is installed, but under displays the maximum allowed in the drop down box is 1024x768 (4:3) display is unknown and detect displays does nothing. I have loaded all updates available but still no fix. xrandr shows: VGA1 connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm 1024x768 60.0* 800x600 60.3 56.2 848x480 60.0 640x480 59.9 xrandr --addmode VGA1 1360x768 cannot find mode "1360x768" anything above 1024x768 can not be found, but then I could be doing this out of step!!

• cannot connect to wireless network on ubuntu 12.04

  i have installed ubuntu on my 6-year-old Acer Aspire 4310 and i love it's lightning speed.but, now i have a big problem, that is it cannot connect to any wireless network. the wireless network worked well in my windows. the wireless switch is not responding to me(i guess it only works on windows). there are also no wireless toggle switch on my keyboard. i have installed my driver, yeah, a proprietary driver. i installed it, and my i never see my wireless network anymore, even the enabling and disabling button in the system settings. i can connect my wireless network during the ubuntu installation. so what's the problem? i cannot find wlan0 in the ifconfig output. i can still see the enable and disable button in the system settings before i install the driver. now even i remove the driver, i will no longer display. i wanted my wifi back, help!

• How do I recover when Compiz crashes?

  Often compiz will crash and leave the keyboard useless. Normally I drop to the console and restart GDM. Is there a solution where I can start Compiz back up without losing everything in the current session? compiz --replace & That's how I usually restart Compiz when it crashes and I can still use the keyboard. • Javascript Only Search Method [on hold]

  I need to put a search function on a website that is going to be on a CD-ROM with no access to the internet. It has 80 pages, and about 500 'items', so I'd prefer to not have to hard code 100's of 'if statements if possible. I've found a few programs you can buy that will index and generate results (Zoom Search, JSS Index, The German Guys') but there are odd quirks with each one. Plus I would rather code it myself to get complete control over it, and to really understand what it's doing. Basically searching for a few words would display the product image and description; clicking on that would take you the related URL. This is kind of complicated, I can't find an easy solution not dealing with hundreds of if Statements. Has anyone ever created anything like this or know a better method? I'm not really sure a better way to go about this. I've used PHP/MYSQL for search results before, but this cannot run any php.
