• Dim (NEARLY blank) laptop screen, secondary screen works - why?

  My laptop screen is (almost) black while my secondary screen is fine. I believe it to be backlight / brightness related. Problem description it starts when I start the laptop system loads and works fine, just screen has problems I can see the screen though very faintly / dimly - it's hard to see anything which ain't very white e.g. starting screen has big Thinkpad logo in white, large font - I can see it, though very dimly second screen works very well Official backligtht debugging: using acpi setting as prescribed there for Thinkpads didn't help I can see an entry in /sys/class/backlight/ and it changes when I press hotkeys for brightness (current backlight power for instance goes up or down) acpi-off didn't helpm neither did acpi_backlight=vendor Hardware data Laptop is Thinkpad Edge with glossy screen. 4 processors, 2 cores, exemplary CPU data from cat /proc/cpuinfo reports Genuine Intel i5 (M 480 @ 2.67GHz). Tried and failed Resetting / running on power or battery / charging / getting rid of static electricity / warming up *doesn't help* This is NOT a blank-screen problem, at least it isn't following official Ubuntu black-screen diagnostics - I can see my screen, though barely. What I will try next: - check last updates I've made - IIRC I am running on nomodeset already, but will verify this Any ideas how to proceed best? What is most probable cause?

  One of our vendors provides a web service API to allow their customers to validate data in a database. As part of their SDK, they provide a WSDL (Web Service Definition Language) file that, according to their documentation, can "be read by software applications and application development tools. An application tool such as Microsoft's Visual Studio can import a WSDL document and automatically generate software classes that access the Web Services the WSDL defines." I'm currently using Visual Studio 2005. What do I need to do to get Visual Studio to do the magic code generation for me?

• Looking for design patterns to isolate framework layers from each other

  Hi, I'm wondering if anyone has any experience in "isolating" framework objects from each other (Spring, Hibernate, Struts). I'm beginning to see design "problems" where an object from one framework gets used in another object from a different framework. My fear is we're creating tightly coupled objects. For instance, I have an application where we have a DynaActionForm with several attributes...one of which is a POJO generated by the Hibernate Tools. This POJO gets used everywhere...the JSP populates data to it, the Struts Action sends it down to a Service Layer, the DAO will persist it...ack! Now, imagine that someone decides to do a little refactoring on that POJO...so that means the JSP, Action, Service, DAO all needs to be updated...which is kind of painful...There has got to be a better way?! There's a book called Core J2EE Patterns: Best Practices and Design Strategies (2nd Edition)...is this worth a look? I don't believe it touches on any specific frameworks, but it looks like it might give some insight on how to properly layer the application... Thanks!

  We provide Email Marketing service through our online Application. We have about 30 customers. And each one has it's own mailling list (5k to 100k emails each). What we really want is to distribute email's delivery between 2 or more servers. I was wondering What kind of aproach/solutions MailChimp , Constant Contact uses to provide a great service ? use many servers ? many IPs ? Our spam policy suspends ANY user/customer that gets 10% bounced . We currently rotate our outgoing Mail Ip once deliveries limit per remote host is reached. Is it the best approach/solution ?

  Reading up on WCF we have self hosting option available , one limitation here is we have to manage the host process lifecycle ourselves. What I am exploring here is to run the service without IIS and do a self hosting. Few things come to mind - How will request management work here. In case of IIS it manages the request and give control to dotnet on a particular thread. In absence of IIS do we need to write code ourselves to manage incoming requests ( say on a tcp port ) or WCF provides some classes to manage request and spawn threads to process each thread. I am aware that in case of self hosting this needs to be a windows service. In case of self hosting how can me tap on the number of simultaneous requests on the sever , it can be managed by limiting the thread pool ? or we can configure this via wcf ? Thanks dc

  I'm currently trying to make a case for adopting dependency management for builds (ala Maven, Ivy, NuGet) and creating an internal repository for shared modules, of which we have over a dozen enterprise wide. What are the primary selling points of this build technique? The ones I have so far: Eases the process of distributing and importing shared modules, especially version upgrades. Requires the dependencies of shared modules to be precisely documented. Removes shared modules from source control, speeding and simplifying checkouts/check ins (when you have applications with 20+ libraries this is a real factor). Allows more control or awareness of what third party libs are used in your organization. Are there any selling points that I'm missing? Are there any studies or articles giving improvement metrics?

  PreReq: User logs in and is given roles got from the database using a custom implementation of userService. i.e. authentication-provider user-service-ref="securityPolicyService" The implemented method loadUserByUsername gets called and the roles are load for the user for the particular club they are logging into, Default one is loaded first time in. The user then click on a different club from the UI and I call a method on a service that gets the new list of authorities for this club. I then perform the following: Object principle = SecurityContextHolder.getContext().getAuthentication().getPrincipal(); SecureMember sm = (SecureMember) principle; Authentication auth = new UsernamePasswordAuthenticationToken(sm, null, newAuthories); <br><br> SecurityContextHolder.getContext().setAuthentication(auth);<br> request.getSession(false).invalidate(); SecureMember extends User from SpringFramework.   I'm using an MVC pattern in winforms application. I need to call remote service asynchronously. So On some event in View I invoke corresponding Presenter method. In Presenter I call BeginInvoke method of service. But to View must be updated only in Main Thread. I could actualy point CallBack to some function in View, and update it`s controls state, but this conflicts with MVP pattern - View must not be responsible for data it carries. This callback function must be in Presenter. But how then invoke View in Main Thread?

While scrapping the data through internet, after few hours i recieve a error message as: Error: ** Please request bibliographic data in smaller chunks.** Here bibliographic data is one kind of the service provided by the EPO webservice. I hope there is no error with my inputs and the service provided. I dont know what this error means. Is it related to the internet connection or with my webservices? can anyone please help me on what this error actually mean?

  In my thesis I need to test different architectures. A request to a REST web service developed using Apache CXF and Spring MVC with MySQL as back end serving references(a field in database) to images,audio and video files stored in file system. In the response message, what is the best method to send the content to the client(another application using the service which I developed). URI: http://www.filmservices.com/film/{id} A client here is not the end user. Send the encoded hyperlink's(where the content is stored in the file system) to the client, so that the client renders the response and displays it to the browser. Use Base64 to encode the message(image,audio,video) and send it to the client. Main concern is performance.

  I'm trying to update my Silverlight 4 UI approx every 1/2 second with new data. I've hooked into a WCF service using net.tcp binding and issuing callbacks from the server. To make sure I get the data from the service as quickly as possible I've started up my proxy on a backround worker inside of my Silverlight App. My question is, how do I get the results from the callback and update the ObservableCollection that is bound to a datagird? I've tried a number of different ways and keep getting the dreaded cross-thread error.

  I am considering building an app in C++ that will be parsing text from the web and create some statistical results. These results I want to be fed in an external app in real time. The external app (to whose code I have no access, but can ask for a - paid - custom made addition) will then need some code to read and use these results. I am wondering what would be the best way to interconnect the two apps, in terms of speed and ease of implementation. • Allow non-sudo group to control Upstart job

  I'm trying to set up an Upstart job to run on system startup, and that can also be started/stopped by members of a group other than sudo. With a previous version, I usedupdate-rc.d and scripts stored in /etc/init.d/ to get this working by adding %Group ALL = NOPASSWD: /etc/init.d/scriptname to my sudoers file, but I can't seem to get an equivalent working for Upstart. I tried adding %Group ALL = NOPASSWD: /sbin/initctl start jobname to the sudoers file, but trying to run the command start jobname produces this error: start: Rejected send message, 1 matched rules; type="method_call", sender=":1.21" (uid=1000 pid=5148 comm="start jobname " interface="com.ubuntu.Upstart0_6.Job" member="Start" error name="(unset)" requested_reply="0" destination="com.ubuntu.Upstart" (uid=0 pid=1 comm="/sbin/init") As near as I can tell, that's a complaint about how my user account isn't given the power to send 'Start' messages in the D-Bus config file for Upstart. I haven't been able to actually find any information on how to edit that file to give a group permission to access a specific service--does such an option exist? Is there a way to edit the Sudoers file so I can run the job without editing the config file? Am I better off just sticking with the previous version?

• Ubuntu 14.04 install fails with Via S3 UniChrome Pro graphics

  I am trying to install Ubuntu 14.04 on a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pro laptop(it's quite old yes, has about 30GB Hard Drive and I think 192mb of RAM) which currently has Windows XP installed (which I'd like to keep for the time being). I have downloaded the 32-bit Desktop ISO and used unetbootin to create a Live USB for this laptop. When I boot from USB, I arrive at the unetbootin Grey and Blue menu and pick either "Try Ubuntu without installing", or "Install Ubuntu". The menu goes away and an Ubuntu loadscreen showing UBUNTU and four dots which progressively change between white and orange. At about the second color changing cycle a white underscore symbol appears next to the fourth dot and flickers. There is some leftover text from the kernel boot still visible, but there is no graphical desktop. • Address Validation API

  I have a task to validate addresses entered into a system I am currently creating. The system requires that address entered are validated against a valid data source. In the UK the dataset comes from the Royal Mail and is expensive to access. The data needed is post code info for the whold of europe to start with accessed by an API into the web application. There are a number of companies that offer this service, QAS Capscan Postcode anywhere These all offer the service I require. However this is expensive and in some cases not a complete data set. e.g. not Ireland I was also wondering if there would be a way to utalis the google maps API to validate this data via postal code and country. Would the google maps method be possible or do I have to go down the line of one of these expensive companies? Any thoughts on what line I should take.
