• Single Responsibility Principle - How Can I Avoid Code Fragmentation?

  I'm working on a team where the team leader is a virulent advocate of SOLID development principles. However, he lacks a lot of experience in getting complex software out of the door. We have a situation where he has applied SRP to what was already quite a complex code base, which has now become very highly fragmented and difficult to understand and debug. We now have a problem not only with code fragmentation, but also encapsulation, as methods within a class that may have been private or protected have been judged to represent a 'reason to change' and have been extracted to public or internal classes and interfaces which is not in keeping with the encapsulation goals of the application. We have some class constructors which take over 20 interface parameters, so our IoC registration and resolution is becoming a monster in its own right. I want to know if there is any 'refactor away from SRP' approach we could use to help fix some of these issues. I have read that it doesn't violate SOLID if I create a number of empty courser-grained classes that 'wrap' a number of closely related classes to provide a single-point of access to the sum of their functionality (i.e. mimicking a less overly SRP'd class implementation). Apart from that, I cannot think of a solution which will allow us to pragmatically continue with our development efforts, while keeping everyone happy. Any suggestions ?

• PXE Boot PCLinuxOS ISO

  I'm in the process of trying to convert some computers at my local school to be diskless browser stations. We've identified PCLinuxOS as the OS we'd like to use due to it's easy interface for creating custom ISO images (we need WINE and some custom apps installed also, as well as FireFox). I've been having problems figuring out how to get an ISO to boot via PXE. In our network, I only have access to TFTP and HTTP, so I cannot use NFS. The machines all have enough memory (4 gigs) that they could use a ram drive to hold the ISO image, if that helps. Currently I've been looking at GPXE with GRUB/MEMDISK, but I don't know if that's the right solution, or even where a good resource is for setting it up. Searching the web has proved fruitless, as most of the information is either NFS-specific or out of date. The other students and I would appreciate any help! :)

• Multicasting and multicast address

  I have confusion about the multicast addresses, I have read an example which is given by. Suppose two applications have been built to send audio over a network. One application accepts and digitizes an audio input stream, and then sends the resulting frame across the network to other application. The second application receives the digitized audio from the network, converts it back to the audio signal and plays the result over a speaker. Unless the two applications use broadcast to send frames, no other computers on the network will receive a copy of the frame. Multicasting provides an excellent solution to the problems of allowing some computers to participate in audio transmission. To use multicasting , a multicast address must be chosen for the audio application. And the receiving application passes the multicast address to the network interface. The interface begins to accept the packets sent to that address. Question: how this multicast address is chosen, how the receiving application knows that the sender using this specific destination address for the audio frames.

• Is there a way to change the default sound volume on startup in windows?

  I've got a Creative X-Fi Titanium running on Windows 8, which works great, but the drivers have this weird quirk where it sets my headphones volume at 30% every time I boot if I have fast boot enabled. If I disable fast boot then it remembers my previous volume but I don't want to disable fast boot any more (I have an SSD, I want to use it :P) I've asked a similar question here before but as you can see the only "solution" was to disable fast boot, which I don't want to do anymore. Is there a command line tool that will let me set my volume or something similar that I can chuck in a batch file and run on startup, or anything else similar?

• login takes long time

  I am using Ubuntu 12.04 from past 12 days. In the beginning login was fast enough after I put the password it hardly takes 3 to 4 sec to enter in desktop, but now its taking like more that 40 sec to show desktop after entering password. whats the problem, is there any solution? • How to locate chrome bookmarks in linux

  I upgraded from Karmic Koala to Lucid Lynx beta, was working fine for a while (was even rebooting). But, after some time, it is not booting and i cant find a solution. I have tried installing the grub again, doesn't help. Well, the problem is all my settings, bookmarks and passwords are blocked in that partition. I cant find where the Chrome stores bookmarks in Ubuntu. Can you help me either getting my system rebooted or getting the bookmarks ? Thanks. p.s. I am currently on liveusb.

• Vlan and Switch setting - dummy

  I need to speak tomorrow the network engineer and I would like to understand his so apologise for the Dummy question: In the school we have a cab with a 24 port Netgear manageable switch with an admin and curriculum VLAN settings. Usually, as I over heard, in the morning and around 4.30pm there are a slowdown period on the computers which connect to this switch. No one could track this back yet. Questions: What is the best way to track back this slowdown Would it be a temporary solution to physical separate the two network with 2 switches If that would work how can I link them together to be able to see the curriculum from the admin side. Do I need an extra router then? Too many questions but I have no clue where to start and the gentleman will be paid by hours... can you see where I am coming from?:) Could you guide me in the right direction please? Any comment would be appreciated and please send links if you down vote the question:)

  Version control systems (VCS) like Subversion, Git and the others has been widely adopted and became the must-have tool in any software development project. Source artifacts and checked out, modified, checked in, all the history of changes is tracked by the VCS.  But what if the development tool stores the source/configuration artifacts not in your laptop's hard drive, but in some shared repository instead? Well, we definitely need a way for export/import our artifacts from/to this repository.   Oracle BI Publisher report development approach is based on such a shared repository model (catalog), and starting from BI Publisher 11.1.1.5 Oracle ships Catalog Utility, which can be utilized to export/import the reports from the command line.  To start using the BI Publisher Catalog Utility you should: Go to the file system of the server where BI Publisher binaries has been installed and locate the following file: <MW_HOME>/Oracle_BI1/clients/bipublisher/BIPCatalogUtil.zip Copy the file to your local filesystem and unzip it. I will refer to this unzipped directory as <BIP_CLIENT_DIR> below If you do not want to pass server BI Publisher server URL, username and password during each invocation, modify the corresponding values inside <BIP_CLIENT_DIR>/config/xmlp-client-config.xml Open the terminal window and go to <BIP_CLIENT_DIR>/bin Make sure that the following environment variables are set: JAVA_HOME, ORACLE_HOME Now it's time to run the utility: if you are on Linux - just run BIPCatalogUtil.sh and pass the parameters according to the utility documentation if you are on MS Windows the bad news are that the command script for MS Windows is missing, and support.oracle.com note 1333726.1 says that a temporary solution is "create a .cmd file by setting up a classpath and copying the same commands from the .sh script". • Prevent Firefox from going to first search result

  When I type some terms in the address bar (not the search box!) and hit enter, Firefox searches for those terms on Google, and, depending on some logic either takes me to the search results page or takes me to the first search result. Now, I want it to always take me to the search results page (like Chrome does). Is this possible? And, yes, I am aware that the search box does exactly that, but I'm using it for some other search engine. So, another solution would be to add additional search box, that can also work for me.

• How to limit click'n'drag movement to an area?

  I apologize for the somewhat generic title. I'm really don't have much clue about how to accomplish what I'm trying to do, which is making it harder even to research a possible solution. I'm trying to implement a path marker of sorts (maybe there's a most suitable name for it, but this is the best I could come up with). In front of the player there will be a path marker, which will determine how the player will move once he finishes planning his turn. The player may click and drag the marker to the position they choose, but the marker can only be moved within a defined working area (the gray bit). So I'm now stuck with two problems: First of all, how exactly should I define that workable area? I can imagine maybe two vectors that have the player as a starting point to form the workable angle, and maybe those two arcs could come from circles that have their center where the player is, but I definetly don't know how to put this all together. And secondly, after I've defined the area where the marker can be placed, how can I enforce that the marker should only stay within that area? For example, if the player clicks and drags the marker around, it may move freely within the working area, but must not leave the boundaries of the area. So for example, if the player starts dragging the marker upwards, it will move upwards until it hits he end of the working area (first diagram below), but if after that the player starts dragging sideways, the marker must follow the drag while still within the area (second diagram below). I want to be able to view the file system of a computer through a serial port.. Is this possible? Edit: So I have successfully connected two computers together using r232 serial ports with a null modem. • Mac OS X read/write NTFS support

  I am trying to get read/write support for NTFS drives, under Mac os 10.6. I have tried to use NTFS 3G, but it seems it does not support 64 bit kernels. I was unable to change my Mac's Kernel to 32 bit. Is there a solution? I am running Snow Leopard, under a 2011 MBP13 I am getting the following error.   Our security policy does not permit ftpd on our servers. Our trusted developers use ftps to access our webservers and they have full access to the server. How do we grant limited access to a single untrusted developer for an existing virtual host. Ive configured rssh to only allow sftp to our untrusted developer, but we dont want him browsing around our other sites. I've investigated chroot, but it seems overly complex and more for restricting access to their home folders. I want to limit access to /srv/www/vhostx/ and below. Whats the best solution?

I have windows XP, and i am going to have to have a VM running: Windows 7 Visual Studio 2008 Sql Server 2008 IIS 7 (8 in a little while) Wamp Photoshop CS5 etc... so i was wondering what should i use to be easier to install and configure, and best performance: Virtual Box or Microsoft's Virtual Machine? Thank you Well i tried Virtual Box, it's always crashing for some reason. I think i'm going to try Virtual PC, just to stick to an all Microsoft Solution.

• New way of integrating Openfeint in Cocos2d-x 0.12.0

  I am trying to implement OpenFeint for Android in my cocos2d-x project. My approach so far has been creating a button that calls a static java method in class Bridge using jnihelper functions (jnihelper only accepts statics). Bridge has one singleton attribute of type OFAndroid, that is the class dynamically calling the Openfeint Api methods, and every method in the bridge just forwards it to the OFAndroid object. What I am trying to do now is to initialize the openfeint libraries in the main java class that is the one calling the static C++ libraries. My problem right now is that the initializing function void com.openfeint.api.OpenFeint.initialize(Context ctx, OpenFeintSettings settings, OpenFeintDelegate delegate) is not accepting the context parameter that I am giving him, which is a "this" reference to the main class. Main class extends from Cocos2dxActivity but I don't have any other that extends from Application. Any suggestions on fixing it or how to improve the architecture? EDIT: I am trying a new solution. Make the bridge class into an Application child, is called from Main object, initializes OpenFeint when created and it can call the OpenFeint functions instead of needing an additional class. • Solaris to Linux conversion: Use VxFS or GFS?

  We're a Solaris shop looking at RedHat Enterprise Linux and one of the things we're wondering is if we should keep Veritas Volume Manager + FileSystem or go with LVM+ext3 or RedHat's preferred cluster filesystem solution, GFS. One of the things we like about Veritas is that it can use Veritas Volume Replicator to have a remote copy of important filesystems. This functionality seems to be missing from RedHat, DRBD doesn't seem to be packaged in RHEL... So my questions are: Does anybody use VxFS/VxVM/VVR on Linux? Thoughts, experiences? Comparison with LVM+ext3? Anybody using GFS? Thoughts, experiences? Do you do remote replication for disaster recovery, and if so, how? Is there a standard RedHat way?

• Is Linq having a mind-numbing effect on .NET programmers?

  A lot of us started seeing this phenomenon with jQuery about a year ago when people started asking how to do absolutely insane things like retrieve the query string with jQuery. The difference between the library (jQuery) and the language (JavaScript) is apparently lost on many programmers, and results in a lot of inappropriate, convoluted code being written where it is not necessary. Maybe it's just my imagination, but I swear I'm starting to see an uptick in the number of questions where people are asking to do similarly insane things with Linq, like find ranges in a sorted array. I can't get over how thoroughly inappropriate the Linq extensions are for solving that problem, but more importantly the fact that the author just assumed that the ideal solution would involve Linq without actually thinking about it (as far as I can tell). It seems that we are repeating history, breeding a new generation of .NET programmers who can't tell the difference between the language (C#/VB.NET) and the library (Linq). What is responsible for this phenomenon? Is it just hype? Magpie tendencies? Has Linq picked up a reputation as a form of magic, where instead of actually writing code you just have to utter the right incantation? I'm hardly satisfied with those explanations but I can't really think of anything else. More importantly, is it really a problem, and if so, what's the best way to help enlighten these people?

• OOP concept: is it possible to update the class of an instantiated object?

  I am trying to write a simple program that should allow a user to save and display sets of heterogeneous, but somehow related data. For clarity sake, I will use a representative example of vehicles. The program flow is like this: The program creates a Garage object, which is basically a class that can contain a list of vehicles objects Then the users creates Vehicles objects, these Vehicles each have a property, lets say License Plate Nr. Once created, the Vehicle object get added to a list within the Garage object --Later on--, the user can specify that a given Vehicle object is in fact a Car object or a Truck object (thus giving access to some specific attributes such as Number of seats for the Car, or Cargo weight for the truck) At first sight, this might look like an OOP textbook question involving a base class and inheritance, but the problem is more subtle because at the object creation time (and until the user decides to give more info), the computer doesn't know the exact Vehicle type. Hence my question: how would you proceed to implement this program flow? Is OOP the way to go? Just to give an initial answer, here is what I've came up until now. There is only one Vehicle class and the various properties/values are handled by the main program (not the class) through a dictionary. • Finding direction of travel in a world with wrapped edges

  I need to find the shortest distance direction from one point in my 2D world to another point where the edges are wrapped (like asteroids etc). I know how to find the shortest distance but am struggling to find which direction it's in. The shortest distance is given by: int rows = MapY; int cols = MapX; int d1 = abs(S.Y - T.Y); int d2 = abs(S.X - T.X); int dr = min(d1, rows-d1); int dc = min(d2, cols-d2); double dist = sqrt((double)(dr*dr + dc*dc)); Example of the world : : T : :--------------:--------- : : : S : : : : : : T : : : :--------------: In the diagram the edges are shown with : and -. I've shown a wrapped repeat of the world at the top right too. I want to find the direction in degrees from S to T. So the shortest distance is to the top right repeat of T. but how do I calculate the direction in degreed from S to the repeated T in the top right? I know the positions of both S and T but I suppose I need to find the position of the repeated T however there more than 1. The worlds coordinates system starts at 0,0 at the top left and 0 degrees for the direction could start at West. It seems like this shouldn’t be too hard but I haven’t been able to work out a solution. I hope somone can help? Any websites would be appreciated.

• WEB based HPC cluster node management

  Hello, i am working on my school diploma thesis. The main goal is to create web based application where logged users could see free and busy nodes, turn them on and off, see what process they are running etc. Figured out that i could do something like this - write some cron daemon that would run every 30seconds or so, and it could run ping utility for each node to find out if it is on or off, then write results to some file. Then from my web app (i will write in PHP) i could read the info. Will it be a good solution? How would you suggest me to do it? And finally, is there any existing solutions (it may not be a definetly ewb based) for managment of cluster nodes?
