• How to implement multi relationship in SQL Server?

  I’m trying to design a database to use with ASP.net MVC application. Here is the scenario: There are three entities and users can post their comments for each of these different entities. I just wonder how just put one table for Comments and link all other entities to it. Obviously, Comments table needs 3 references (foreign key) to those tables but as you know these foreign keys can’t be null and just one of them can be filled for each row. Is there any better way than implementing three different tables for each entity’s comments?

• Implement subitem in SQLite

  How could I implement a sub item where the item would have a parent to that of the same item. For example, I have a database that holds tasks/todos. Each todo has a title(TEXT), completed(INTEGER [1 if true, 0 if false]), and due date(TEXT) column. I would like to add functionality to have subtasks, where a task could possibly have a parent task. How would I implement this in SQLite for Android? NOT IN SQL! So no foreign keys (triggers are allow, though)! Could I just have a separate table (subtask) and have a foreign key trigger to link subtask(INTEGER parent) to task(INTEGER PRIMARY KEY AUTOINCREMENT _id)? Or should I add a column to my original task table(INTEGER parent)? How could I implement this?

  I'm interested in learning more about design practices in PHP for Database Abstraction & Factory methods. For background, my site is a common-interest social networking community currently in beta mode. Currently, I've started moving my old code for object retrieval to factory methods. However, I do feel like I'm limiting myself by keeping a lot of SQL table names and structure separated in each function/method. Questions: Is there a reason to use PEAR (or similar) if I dont anticipate switching databases? Can PEAR interface with the MySqli prepared statements I currently use? Will it help me separate table names from each method? (If no, what other design patterns might I want to research?) Will it slow down my site once I have a significantly large member base?

  I'm tasked with designing an application that will allow a person to scan a legal document, save that associated with a Name and save it to a database. Now, inside of the Organization, there are many departments, and each department can have many sub departments. Problem lies in that some larger organizations will have many departments and smallers ones will only have 1 or two. I've though about creating a Department table and a Supdepartment table to create associations, etc. That way it's extensible and users can dynamically create departments to fit my program to their organizational scheme. Am I approaching this the right way? As I said, this is my first commercial application so I want to do it right and set a name for myself for delivering things on time and good code for other to expand upon.

• Nested sql queries in rails when :has_and_belongst_to_many

  Hello, In my application I the next task that has not already been done by a user. I have Three models, A Book that has many Tasks and then I have a User that has has and belongs to many tasks. The table tasks_users table contains all completed tasks so I need to write a complex query to find the next task to perform. I have came up with two solutions in pure SQL that works, but I cant translate them to rails, thats what I need help with SELECT * FROM `tasks` WHERE `tasks`.`book_id` = @book_id AND `tasks`.`id` NOT IN ( SELECT `tasks_users`.`task_id` FROM `tasks_users` WHERE `tasks_users`.`user_id` = @user_id) ORDER BY `task`.`date` ASC LIMIT 1; and equally without nested select SELECT * FROM tasks LEFT JOIN tasks_users ON tasks_users.tasks_id = task.id AND tasks_users.user_id = @user_id WHERE tasks_users.task_id IS NULL AND tasks.book_id = @book_id LIMIT 1; This is what I Have done in rails with the MetaWhere plugin book.tasks.joins(:users.outer).where(:users => {:id => nil}) but I cant figure out how to get the current user there too, Thanks for any help!

• CSS Position:Absolute with relative adjustment

  I am trying to do a vertical dropdown menu. This is my code .menu li:hover>ul{ position:absolute; display:inline; left:120px; top:100px;} I use position: Absolute to remove the sub-menu from the table, once the menu gets hovered. It appears that, if I do not indicate top or left property. The sub-menu will displayed relatively. Now I need to adjust the position relatively but seems that only the left property works. So my sub-menu left position is 120px relatively away from its original position. But the top is 100px away from the top of the window, rather then to the original position. How do I move the list up relative to it original position? I cant use position:relative because I need the sub-menu to be remove from the table.

• Django: Grouping by Dates and Servers

  So I am trying to emulate google app's status page: http://www.google.com/appsstatus#hl=en but for backups for our own servers. Instead of service names on the left it'll be server names but the dates and hopefully the pagination will be there too. Everyday a little after midnight a cron job will run and add a row for each server for that day, defaulting on status unknown (UN). Obviously {{ created }} doesn't do anything but the servers don't have create dates. Backups do and because it's a cron job there should only be X number of rows with any particular date (depending on how many servers we are following for that day). Summary I want to create a table, X being server names, Y being dates starting at today while all the cells being the status of a backup. The above model and template should hopefully give you an idea what my thought process but I am willing to alter anything. Basically I am create a fancy excel spreadsheet.

• querying databases on same server with linq

  In normal sql I could do joins on tables in different databases as long as they were on the same server (or linked servers). In linq I can't figure out how to do that. Is this possible? For example, if I have a database called db1 and another called db2. db1 has a table called people and db2 has a table called address I could do something like... select a.addressline1, p.firstname from db1.dbo.people p inner join db2.dbo.address a on p.peopleid = a.peopleid Is this possible with linq? • Getting "select permission denied" when using LINQ but my account is a sysadmin

  I have a console app that's geared to be automatically ran as a Scheduled Task. I use LINQ to SQL to pull some data out of the database, format it into a CSV and email it to a client. All of a sudden I am getting the error "SELECT permission denied for table", but the account I'm using to connect to the database (specified in my app.config file) has the "sysadmin" server role (bad programmer, I know; I'll get around to changing it to a better account later but I want to make sure it works first). I can connect directly to the SQL database using that very same account and query the table in question without a problem, it only seems to be when using the LINQ code. Any idea what would be causing this?

  I'm trying come up with the best method of synchronizing particular rows of 2 different database tables. So, for example there's 2 product tables in different databases as such... Origin Database product{ merchant_id, product_id, ... additional fields } Destination Database product{ merchant_id product_id ... additional fields } So, the database schema is the same for both. However I'm looking to select records with a particular merchant_id, remove all records from the destination table that have that merchant_id and replace those records with records from the origin database of the same merchant_id. My first thought was using mysqldump, parsing out the create table statements, and only running the Insert Statements. Seems like a pain though. So I was wondering if there is a better technique to do this. I would think mysql has some method of creating INSERT statements as output from a SELECT statement, so you can define how to insert specific record information into a new db. Any help would be appreciated, thank you much.

  hi, i am building a real estate application where in it will store the properties and search it. the property will have different categories like (residential, commercial, industrial or agricultural). based upon the category i want to serailize each and every property listing . for example the property with id 1 belongs to resedential will have the serial code rs_SOMERANDOMUNIQUENUMBER. and for commercial it can be cm_SOMERANDOMUNIQUENUMBER and so on. for this my database table looks like this. Now I want to remove the one column name and its value from the script.most probably the identity column. Eg. So I have following db structure : Now I need to perform a query that takes category_id from my product and do the magic : - let's say product belongs to console (category_id is in table Console) - from console_types take type_id, where category_id == category_id - but if product belongs to console_game (category_id is in table console_game) - from console_game take game_cat_id, where category_id == category_id I'm not sure if mysql is capable of such thing.   I have two separate tables both with user id columns uid. I want to take a value from all users in one table and insert it into the correct row for the correct user in the other table. INSERT INTO users2 (picture) SELECT pv.value FROM profile_values as pv, users2 as u WHERE pv.uid = u.uid AND pv.fid = 31 AND users2.uid=u.uid; But it's not working because i seem not to have access to users2.uid inside of the select statement.   I have a table for logging that needs a log ID but I can't use an identity column because the log ID is part of a combo key. create table StuffLogs { StuffID int LogID int Note varchar(255) } There is a combo key for StuffID & LogID. I want to build an insert trigger that computes the next LogID when inserting log records. I can do it for one record at a time (see below to see how LogID is computed), but that's not really effective, and I'm hoping there's a way to do this without cursors. select @NextLogID = isnull(max(LogID),0)+1 from StuffLogs where StuffID = (select StuffID from inserted) The net result should allow me to insert any number of records into StuffLogs with the LogID column auto computed. • Decoupling into DAL and BLL - my concerns.

  Hi, In many posts concerning this topic I come across very simple examples that do not answer my question. Let's say a have a document table and user table. In DAL written in ADO.NET i have a method to retries all documents for some criteria. Now I the UI I have a case where I need to show this list along with the names of the creator. Up to know I have it done with one method in DAL containig JOIN statement. However eveytime I have such a complex method i have to do custom mapping to some object that doesn't mark 1:1 to DB. Should it be put into another layer ? If so then I will have to resing from join query for iteration through results and querying each document author. . . which doen't make sense... (performance) what is the best approach for such scenarios ?
