• Reset All Internet Explorer 8 Settings to Fix Stability Problems

  If you like to tweak and customize IE with Add-ons and changing settings, sometimes you may have problems with stability. To save time, you can reset all of the IE settings rather than trying to troubleshoot individual areas. Reset IE Settings To reset Internet Explorer Settings, click on Tools then Internet Options. When you reset the settings, you won’t lose personal settings like your homepage, search provider, passwords…etc. The Internet Options screen opens…click on the Advanced tab, then under Reset Internet Explorer settings click on the Reset button. You’ll need to verify that you want to reset all Internet Explorer Settings. If you choose to, you can delete all of your personal settings as well, but it shouldn’t be necessary to fix stability issues. The settings will start to reset, and when it’s finished close out of the message box. For the process to complete you’ll need to restart Internet Explorer. When it restarts you’ll be presented with the Welcome screen where you can go through the setup wizard again. After it’s complete, you should be back in business and can start using IE again. With the new enhancements and features available in Internet Explorer 8, sometimes too much tweaking can cause it to stop working. One area you could start with is troubleshooting IE 8 Add-ons. However, if you don’t want to waste time troubleshooting each potential issue, sometimes it’s just easier to reset things back to how they were originally. • Should a webserver in the DMZ be allowed to access MSSQL in the LAN?

  This should be a very basic question and I tried to research it and couldn't find a solid answer. Say you have a web server in the DMZ and a MSSQL server in the LAN. IMO, and what I've always assumed to be correct, is that the web server in the DMZ should be able to access the MSSQL server in the LAN (maybe you'd have to open a port in the firewall, that'd be ok IMO). Our networking guys are now telling us that we can't have any access to the MSSQL server in the LAN from the DMZ. They say that anything in the DMZ should only be accessible FROM the LAN (and web), and that the DMZ should not have access TO the LAN, just as the web does not have access to the LAN. So my question is, who is right? Should the DMZ have access to/from the LAN? Or, should access to the LAN from the DMZ be strictly forbidden. All this assumes a typical DMZ configuration.

• IDN and HTTP_HOST

  So, when I want to link my users to a specific page I always use (in php): "http://" . $_SERVER["HTTP_HOST"] . "/page.php", to be sure that the link points to the page they're currently surfing (and not one of the server aliases). But with IDN names, HTTP_HOST is set to "xn--hemmabst-5za.net" (for example) - which of course works but doesn't look very nice. Is there a way to have HTTP_HOST set to the correct IDN name in these cases (in this case - "hemmabäst.net")? I rather do it in Apache before it comes to PHP, because otherwise I'd have to replace all my usage of $_SERVER["HTTP_HOST"]. Any ideas?

  I have problems importing my GPG-Keys into my new installation of debian. I exportet the private-key a few years ago. Now I am trying to get everything running under a new debian. I tried to do gpg --allow-secret-key-import --import private-key.asc But I only get this: gpg: Keine gültigen OpenPGP-Daten gefunden. gpg: Anzahl insgesamt bearbeiteter Schlüssel: 0 which translates to: gpg: No valid OpenPGP-Data found gpg: Number of processed Keys : 0 The file looks correct and starts with --BEGIN PGP PRIVATE KEY BLOCK----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.9 (GNU/Linux) and ends with -----END PGP PRIVATE KEY BLOCK----- what could be wrong?

• email handling with inbox.py and nginx

  I have a Flask web application running behind gunicorn and Nginx. Nginx proxies any traffic to ivrhub.org to the correct flask app. I would very much like to use inbox.py to process some incoming email. Running inbox.py's example on my server and then sending an email to [email protected] does not work as I intended. The inbox.py server does not seem to receive anything but the email also does not bounce. I'm missing something conceptually -- is there a DNS setting I need to configure or something I need to adjust with Nginx?

• How to install matplotlib on OS X?

  I want to install matplotlib on OS X. If possible, using homebrew. I installed Python 2.7.1 using brew install python, I modified my path to use it I installed pip using brew install pip I installed numpy 1.5.1 using pip install numpy I installed scipy 0.8.0 using pip install scipy This is where it gets hairy. pip install matplotlib will fetch the wrong version of matplotlib, which is incompatible with the recent version of numpy. The solution is to fetch the correct version of matplotlib manually: pip install -f http://sourceforge.net/projects/matplotlib/files/matplotlib/matplotlib-1.0.1/matplotlib-1.0.1.tar.gz matplotlib But, that version fails to compile since it can't find the freetype headers: In file included from src/ft2font.cpp:1: src/ft2font.h:14:22: error: ft2build.h: No such file or directory These headers are actually installed in /usr/X11/include as part of the X11 developer tools. So, how can I make matplotlib use these headers?

• Aspect Ratio on Nero 9 for burning DVD

  I am currently attempting to burn a screen capture file to DVD. I will admit that I know very little about the process, the terminology, and am at a loss of how to find this information. I am using Nero 9 and am very displeased that the manuals available to me online explain very little. My current problem is that when I burn to DVD, my beautiful screen capture ends up being cropped. Through endless amounts of googling I am under the impression that this is due to aspect ratio. However, as windows will not tell me the resolution size for me to determine the correct aspect ratio I do not know how to proceed. Is there a way using Nero 9 for me to be able to burn my screen capture to DVD? Any advice or suggestions are appreciated.

• Windows 2008 CAL vs RDS CAL

  Looking at the Win2k8 licensing page here and it appears to me that if I want to have a server to accept Remote Desktop Connections from say 30 users concurrently, I would require: Windows 2008 Server License & Windows 2008 CAL Is this correct logic? Or would I require RDS CALs instead? Or would I actually require RDS CALs on top of that? From what I can gather the RDS CALs are only required if I was to use the additional RDS services like App-V, etc. This question may have been answered here before but just wanted to clarify. Can anyone help?

• PostgreSQL automatic backup

  I have been trying to set up a backup script on a windows server. I have used pgAgent (scheduling for pgAdmin), to run the backup script. No problems with the backup script. However, my jobs are not running like they should. I have set both the schedule, and the steps. I am fairly certain, that I am running the service under a wrong user or a user without the required permissions. I run the service like this: "C:\Program Files\pgAdmin III\pgAgent" INSTALL pgAgent -u postgres -p secret hostaddr=127.0.0.1 dbname=pgadmin user=postgres And I get an error, telling me that there was an error with the login information, though I know it's correct. When I go under services (controlpanel -- administration -- services), I am able to start the service with the local user. Can this be the problem? Where can I see or change the permissions on the postgres user?

  PHP 5.3.2 Apache 2.2.15 Mysql 5.1.X Windows XP SP3 I have now configured everything correctly but get a timeout when trying to connect to Mysql via PHP. So frustrated. I don't get an error message, the script just times out. I have made sure I have the correct paths. Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 60 seconds exceeded Any idea why this might be happening? I do a php -v from the command line and everything is normal, no errors. i upgraded PHP from 5.2.6 to 5.3.2 - does there seem to be problems or bugs with this? I am essentially using my previous PHP.ini while editing paths. I am lost. Help! If you need anything from phpinfo() or httpd.conf or php.ini let me know. else

• Don't Use "Static" in C#?

  I submitted an application I wrote to some other architects for code review. One of them almost immediately wrote me back and said "Don't use "static". You can't write automated tests with static classes and methods. "Static" is to be avoided." I checked and fully 1/4 of my classes are marked "static". I use static when I am not going to create an instance of a class because the class is a single global class used throughout the code. He went on to mention something involving mocking, IOC/DI techniques that can't be used with static code. He says it is unfortunate when 3rd party libraries are static because of their un-testability. Is this other architect correct? update: here is an example: APIManager - this class keeps dictionaries of 3rd party APIs I am calling along with the next allowed time. It enforces API usage limits that a lot of 3rd parties have in their terms of service. I use it anywhere I am calling a 3rd party service by calling Thread.Sleep(APIManager.GetWait("ProviderXYZ")); before making the call. Everything in here is thread safe and it works great with the TPL in C#.

• Installing Catalyst 11.6 for an ATI HD 6970

  Ubuntu Maverick 10.10 is displaying the desktop okay (though limited to 1600x1200) after my having installed my new HD 6970 card, so I'm now trying to install the proprietary driver (I understand the open source one requires a more recent kernel than that in Maverick). The proprietary driver under 'Additional Drivers' resulted in a black screen on boot, so I deactivated and am trying to follow the manual install instructions at the cchtml Ubuntu Maverick Installation Guide. • How to install Radeon 3670 HD graphics drivers for Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit with OpenGL 2.0 support?

  I've been having trouble with getting graphics drivers to work that support OpenGL 2.0. I've had some luck with the Ubuntu drivers, however these only support OpenGL 1.3. I thought I would document the methods that I have tried both to see if anyone else has ideas, and to save time for people with a similar problem. System details: Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid) 64 bit Kernel Linux 2.6.32-44-generic GNOME 2.30.2 ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3670 Attempted Methods The methods I have tried are: 1. Installing Proprietary Drivers using the "Hardware Drivers" (Jockey) GUI This GUI offers an "ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver" however any attempts to install it result in a "Sorry, installation of this driver failed" error. The log file is here. There is an Ask Ubuntu question that covers this scenario, and notes that there is a known bug with Jockey. 2. Installing the Proprietary Drivers manually The answer to the question above linked to this wiki page, which gives instructions for installing Catalyst 12.6. This supported hardware list states that the 3670 is not supported in 12.6, and 12.4 must be used. This is somewhat confusing, as AMD's website suggests that the 12.6 driver should be installed for the 3670. There have been user reports that R600 (the GPU inside the 3670 card) doesn't work with 12.6, so I'm sticking with 12.4. I'm following these instructions to install the proprietary drivers on Lucid. I downloaded the 12.4 driver from the AMD website. Building the package worked fine, generating the fglrx, fglrx-dev, fglrx-amdcccle, and fglrx-modaliases deb packages successfully. However, when I try to install these using dpkg it gives me these errors. The make log referenced in the error is here. • Is Internet routing (BGP) fully automated?

  If all the routing tables on the Internet would be erased simultaneously, will the routers be able to rediscover them automatically? I'm having an argument with a colleague who says that the RIPE routing tables are essential, but I remember reading that if the tables disappeared, the BGP protocol will allow routers to rediscover working routes between nodes by querying their neighbors which in turn will query their neighbors until a working route will be detected. Then that route will be used to repopulate the routing tables. After a while, all the routes will be restored (not necessarily the optimal routes). Is that correct?

I’ve been contacted various times by friends working in organization telling me that ALM processes in their company were benchmarked when dinosaurs walked the earth. Most of these individuals already know the great features Microsoft ALM tools offer and are keen to start a conversation with the CIO but don’t exactly know where to start. It is very important how you engage in your first conversation, if you start the conversation with ‘There is this great tooling from Microsoft which offers amazing features to boost developer productivity, … ‘ from experience I can tell you the reply from your CIO would be ‘I already know! Our existing landscape has a combination of bleeding edge open source and cutting edge licensed tools which already cover these features quite well, more over Microsoft products have a high licensing cost associated to them.’ You will always find it harder to sell by feature, the trick is to highlight the gap in the existing processes & tools and then highlight the impact of these gaps to the overall development processes, by now you would have captured enough attention to show off how the ALM tooling offered by Microsoft not only fills those gaps but offers great value adds to take their development practices to the next level. Such observations can be recorded in the Issue Brainstorming worksheet for further consideration later. It is also worth mentioning the different levels of ALM maturity to the customer. By default the desired state of ALM maturity is set to Standard, it is possible to set a desired state by area, you should strive for Advanced or Dynamic, it always helps by explaining the classification and advantages. The resultant graph plotted on a spider’s web shows you the company’s current state of ALM maturity and the desired state of ALM maturity. • Is there something special about the number 65535?

  2¹6-1 & 25 = 25 (or? obviously ?) A developer asked me today what is bitwise 65535 & 32 i.e. 2¹6-1 & 25 = ? I thought at first spontaneously 32 but it seemed to easy whereupon I thought for several minutes and then answered 32. 32 seems to have been the correct answer but how? 65535=2¹6-1=1111111111111111 (but it doesn't seem right since this binary number all ones should be -1(?)), 32 = 100000 but I could not convert that in my head whereupon I anyway answered 32 since I had to answer something. Is the answer 32 in fact trivial? Is in the same way 2¹6-1 & 25-1 =31? Why did the developer ask me about exactly 65535? Binary what I was asked to evaluate was 1111111111111111 & 100000 but I don't understand why 1111111111111111 is not -1. Shouldn't it be -1? Is 65535 a number that gives overflow and how do I know that?

• Why does bash invocation differ on AIX when using telnet vs ssh

  I am using an AIX 5.3 server with a .bashrc file set up to echo "Executing bashrc." When I log in to the server using ssh and run: bash -c ls I get: Executing bashrc . .. etc.... However, when I log in with telnet as the same user and run the same command I get: . .. etc.... Clearly in the telnet case, the .bashrc was not invoked. As near as I can tell this is the correct behaviour given that the shell is non-interactive in both cases (it is invoked with -c). However, the ssh case seems to be invoking the shell as interactive. It does not appear to be invoking the .profile, so it is not creating a login shell. I cannot see anything obviously different between the environments in the two cases. What could be causing the difference in bash behaviour?

• Why not open a PDF file in the browser but first save it to the harddisk?

  Question Is it correct that saving a PDF to the harddisk first, and then opening it from there with some PDF reader (not the browser) is safer than opening it directly with the browser plugin? My current understanding I know that the PDF browser plugin might have a security leak and a manipulated PDF file might exploit it and get access to the user's computer. I recently heard that saving the PDF file frist and opening it then was safer. I don't understand why that should be safer. Can anyone explain? My logic would suggest that a manipulated file started from the harddisk can just as well exploit a security leak, say for instance, of Adobe Acrobat Reader.

• Why no "da-doomp" (disconnect notification sound) sometimes when unplugging wireless mouse receiver?

  Sometimes (maybe one case in 3), when I unplug the wireless mouse receiver on my Sony VGN-CS215J laptop, there is no "da-doomp" sound, even after a minute or two. And if I plug the receiver back in there is no corresponding "du-dump" sound and the mouse is still (immediately) "live". This can happen when the activity light is out and there's nothing obviously going on -- it's not simply that the box is too busy. Other times one gets the expected behavior (and usually I get the correct behavior if I plug the receiver back in a few seconds and then unplug it after a "failure"). The reason this is significant is that if I get no "da-doomp" then the laptop will not sleep properly -- it will go to sleep initially, but then reawaken a few minutes later inside my laptop case and proceed to run the battery down (and no doubt overheat the unit). Any ideas?

  Atm i have a domain example.com, it uses dedicated server, and it uses "ns1.example.com" and "ns2.example.com" as nameserver. Now i want to change to another dedicated server (with different IP obviously). How to shorten DNS propagation effect so that all visitors that open my domain will be pointed to the new server quickly? At this moment i am lowering the TTL value on old server (to 5 minutes) hoping that once i change the nameserver, all visitors will be pointed to new server. Am i correct? If not, can you give me suggestion?

• Two group of name server records, where to put them?

  I've registered my domain by a registrar that has very poor DNS management tools. I need to point from my registrar to another third-party DNS manager, and then from there point to the name servers of my host, along with some other DNS records (such as SPF records). What I've done now is this: I've given the address of the name servers of my third-party DNS manager to the DNS manager of my registrar, and then I've given the address of the name servers of my host to the third-party DNS manager, along with some SPF and MX records. Is this work correct? Or should I add the NS address of my host to my registrar DNS manager too? The problem is that my domain doesn't resolve to my host, and I see some strange records in some DNS servers around the world that I have not set!

  I have an internal website that cannot be accessed from some machines on my network, due to the physical location, VPN ,network ranges etc. I would like to install Squid on "in between" network to forward request from the clients that cannot reach the website. The issue is the clients have no ability to connect to www.example.com , but they can reach a network with a squid proxy , which in turn can reach www.example.com What is the correct term I need to research in squid , is it just caching www.example.com or do I need to set the clients to use a URL that gets rewritten ? i.e www.squid-example.com -- www.example.com

• Third-party open-source projects in .NET and Ruby and NIH syndrome

  The title might seem to be inflammatory, but it's here to catch your eye after all. I'm a professional .NET developer, but I try to follow other platforms as well. With Ruby being all hyped up (mostly due to Rails, I guess) I cannot help but compare the situation in open-source projects in Ruby and .NET. What I personally find interesting is that .NET developers are for the most part severely suffering from the NIH syndrome and are very hesitant to use someone else's code in pretty much any shape or form. Comparing it with Ruby, I see a striking difference. Folks out there have gems literally for every little piece of functionality imaginable. New projects are popping out left and right and generally are heartily welcomed. On the .NET side we have CodePlex which I personally find to be a place where abandoned projects grow old and eventually get abandoned. Now, there certainly are several well-known and maintained projects, but the number of those pales in comparison with that of Ruby. Granted, NIH on the .NET devs part comes mostly from the fact that there are very few quality .NET projects out there, let alone projects that solve their specific needs, but even if there is such a project, it's often frowned upon and is reinvented in-house. So my question is multi-fold: Do you find my observations anywhere near being correct? If so, what are your thoughts on quality and quantitiy of OSS projects in .NET? Again, if you do agree with my thoughts on "NIH in .NET", what do you think is causing it? And finally, is it Ruby's feature set & community standpoint (dynamic language, strong focus on testing) that allows for such easy integration of third-party code?
