• Is a blob more efficient than a varchar for data that can be ANY size?

  When setting up a database I want to use the most efficient data type for potentially fairly long data. Currently my project is to store song titles and thoughts pertaining to that song. Some titles might be 5 characters or longer than 100 characters and the thoughts could run pretty long. Is it more efficient to use a varchar set to 8000 or to use a blob? Is using a blob the same as a varchar, in that there is a set size it is allocated regardless of what it holds? or is it just a pointer and it doesn't really use much space on the table? Is there a certain set size of a blob in KB or is it expandable?

• How to temporarily save the result of the query, to use in another?

  I have this problem I think you may help me with. P.S. I'm not sure how to call this, so if anyone finds a more appropriate title, please do edit. Background I'm making this application for searching bus transit lines. Bus lines are a 3 digit number, and is unique and will never change. The requirement is to be able to search for lines from stop A to stop B. The user interface is already successful in hinting the user to only use valid stop names. The requirement is to be able to display if a route has a direct line, and if not, display a 2-line and even 3-line combination. Example: I need to get from point A to point D. The program should show: If there's a direct line A-D. If not, display alternative, 2 line combos, such as A-C, C-D. If there aren't any 2-line combos, search for 3-line combos: A-B, B-C, C-D. Of course, the app should display bus line numbers, as well as when to switch buses. What I have: My database is structured as follows (simplified, actual database includes locations and times and whatnot): +-----------+ | bus_stops | +----+------+ | id | name | +----+------+ +-------------------------------+ | lines_stops_relationship | +-------------+---------+-------+ | bus_line | stop_id | order | +-------------+---------+-------+ Where lines_stops_relationship describe a many-to-many relationship between the bus lines and the stops. Order, signifies the order in which stops appear in a single line. Not all lines go back and forth, and order has meaning (point A with order 2 comes after point B with order 1). The Problem We find out if a line can pass through the route easily enough. Just search for a single line which passes through both points in the correct order. How can I find if there's a 2/3 line combo? I was thinking to search for a line which matches the source stop, and one for the destination stop, and see if I can get a common stop between them, where the user can switch buses. How do I remember that stop? 3 line combo is even trickier, I find a line for the source, and a line for the destination, and then what? Search for a line which has 2 stops I guess, but again, How do I remember the stops? tl;dr How do I remember results from a query to be able to use it again? I'm hoping to achieve this in a single query (for each, a query for 1-line routes, a query for 2, and a query for 3-line combos). Note: I don't mind if someone suggests a completely different approach than what I have, I'm open to any solutions. Will award any assistance with a cookie and an upvote. Thanks in advance!

• How should I implement Transaction database EJB 3.0

  In the CustomerTransactions entity, I have the following field to record what the customer bought: @ManyToMany private List<Item> listOfItemsBought; When I think more about this field, there's a chance it may not work because merchants are allowed to change item's information (e.g. price, discount, etc...). Hence, this field will not be able to record what the customer actually bought when the transaction occurred. At the moment, I can only think of 2 ways to make it work. I will record the transaction details into a String field. I feel that this way would be messy if I need to extract some information about the transaction later on. Whenever the merchant changes an item's information, I will not update directly to that item's fields. Instead, I will create another new item with all the new information and keep the old item untouched. I feel that this way is better because I can easily extract information about the transaction later on. However, the bad side is that my Item table may contain a lot of rows. I'd be very grateful if someone could give me an advice on how I should tackle this problem. • Migrating RISC to x86 - endianess 'issue'

  Endianess always comes up when migrating applications and databases from RISC to x86. The issue is often time overblown as if you are running on a relational database the database vendor will provide tools or automated methods to convert the data properly. Oracle RMAN is often the first choice. Oracle imp/exp, data pump, and GoldenGate can also be used. Migrating to Linux on Dell A bigger issue would be applications that access OS files. These OS files will need to be converted from big endian (RISC) to little endian (CISC) and then the application may be impacted because of the endianess differences.

• How can I make this script output each categories item per category [closed]

  Ok so here is the deal currently this script outputs all the products in a parent category as well as the products in the child categories. What i would like to do is seperate the output based on child categories. All the child categories are in the array $children and the string $childs. The parent category is the first array element of $children with the following ones being the actual children. The category names are stored in the database $result as " $cat_name ". I want to first Display the cat_name then the products that fall in that category and then display the next child cat_name and items, ect.   I am building a social network, and I need a simple internal search engine that will display a list of all website users starting with the ones that have the specific keyword in their username. So here is what i need: a search engine that will take a keyword. the search engine will open a new page with a list of all website users, displaying first the users that have the specific keyword in their username. display your username in the placeholder. • Best way to rename existing unique field names in database?

  I have a database table that contains id, filename, userId id is unique identifier filename should also be unique table may contain 10000 records When a user uploads a file it should be entered in database with given rules: If there is no record with same filename, it should be added as it is (Ex. foobar.pdf) If there is record with same filename, it should be added as uploadedName(2).ext (foobar(2).pdf) If there are n records with same base filename (foobar), it should be added as uploadedName(n+1).ext (foobar(20).pdf) Now if foobar(2).pdf is uploaded, it should be added as foobar(2)(2).pdf & so on This pattern needs to be followed because the file is already being uploaded at client side using ajax before sending the details to server and the file hosting service follows the above rules to name the files. My solution: maintain a file that contains all the names and the number of times it has occurred. if a filename that exists in file is entered, increase occurrence count and new name is generated, else add to it to file if the new name generated is in database, add it to file and generate new name
