• How to create database records for a financial year

  Hello, I need to create entities (specifically contracts) in a database table that are associated with a financial year. These contracts will be applied to projects. Any contract variation will be recorded by creating a new contract record for the same financial year but the original will remain associated with the project as a history. The projects can last several years and so at any one time a project will have a live contract record for each year as well as any number of historic contracts for that year. All of which is incidental but I'm trying to provide some context. If the contracts where for the year - it would be easy and I'd just store the Year either as a date field with the 1st of January or just an Integer. However the contracts run for financial years and I don't know how to approach this. I don't want a separate table containing the financial years as I don't want the users to have to maintain this. I don't want to store the financial year as a string "2009/2010" as this is not ideal for sorting/extracting the data. Any ideas will be helpful, my best so far is to have starting and ending year in 2 columns and just "KNOW" that starting is April of the year etc Thanks

• Modify shell script to monitor/ping multiple ip addresses

  Alright so I need to constantly monitor multiple routers and computers, to make sure they remain online. I have found a great script here that will notify me via growl(so i can get instant notifications on my phone) if a single ip cannot be pinged. I have been attempting to modify the script to ping multiple addresses, with little luck. I'm having trouble trying to figure out how to ping a down server while the script keeps watching the online servers. any help would be greatly appreciated. I haven't done much shell scripting so this is quite new to me. • rotate an image aroound a point

  Hi all, I have an image which is of rectangular dimension, eg 30 x 60 pixels I want to rotate this image around the bottom center of the image, i.e i want to set the pivot in the above example as (15, 60 )pixel. I am using a drawble and matrix to get this done, whatever i try i always end up rotating around center of the image. • F# Async problem.

  Hi, I've written a dummy http server as an exercise in F#. I'm using Mono 2.4.4 on Ubuntu 10.04 x86_64, with MonoDevelop. The following code fails to compile with the error: Error FS0039: The field, constructor or member 'Spawn' is not defined (FS0039) Could someone try this in VisualStudio please, I don't know whether this is a Mono problem, or my problem. I have tried several Async examples from the F# book, and they also all produce similar messages about Async.* methods. • Running bundle install fails trying to remote fetch from rubygems.org/quick/Marshal...

  I'm getting a strange error when doing bundle install: $ bundle install Fetching source index for http://rubygems.org/ rvm/rubies/ree-1.8.7-2010.02/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/rubygems/remote_fetcher.rb:304 :in `open_uri_or_path': bad response Not Found 404 (http://rubygems.org/quick/Marshal.4.8/resque-scheduler-1.09.7.gemspec.rz) (Gem::RemoteFetcher::FetchError) I've tried bundle update, gem source -c, gem update --system, gem cleanup, etc etc. Nothing seems to solve this. I notice that the URL beginning with http://rubygems.org/quick does seem to be a 404 -- I don't think that's any problem with my network, though if that's reachable for anyone else then that would be a simple explanation for my problem.   I have been using Windows 7 for a while but have not had to work with a particular legacy intranet application since my upgrade. Unfortunately, this application is setup as an ASP.NET Website project hosted on a remote server. When I have the website open in Visual Studio 2008 and try to debug it: Request for the permission of type 'System.Web.AspNetHostingPermission' failed To resolve this issue on Windows Vista machines I would change the machine's .NET Security Configuration to trust the local intranet. I believe this configuration utility relied upon the mscorcfg.msc which from some cursory research appears to be apart of the .NET 2.0 SDK. I have tried to follow the instructions from this Microsoft Support article running the command below to no avail. • Iterating Over Params Hash

  I'm having an extremely frustrating time getting some images to upload. They are obviously being uploaded as rack/multipart but the way that I'm iterating over my params hash must be causing the problem. I could REALLY use some help, so I can stop pulling out my hair. The text is legitimate but it has the words 'create' and an html <table> tag later in it so it is causing a false positive. • Excel::Shape object getting released automatically after the count reaches 18 in List<T>

  I have a Excel addin written in C# 2.0 in which I am experiencing a strange behavior.Please note that this behavior is only seen in Excel 2003 and NOT in Excel 2007 or 2010. Issue: When the user clicks an import command button, a file is read and a number of Shapes are created/added to the worksheet using Worksheet::Shapes::AddPicture() method. A reference to these Shape objects are kept in a generic list: List<Excel.Shape> list = new List<Excel.Shape>(); Everything works fine till the list has less than 18 references. When the count reaches 18, and a new Shape reference is added, the first one i.e. @ index [0] is released. I am unable to call any method or property on that reference and calling a method/property throws a COMException (0x800A1A8) i.e. Object Required. If I add one more, then the reference @ [1] is not accessible and so on. Strange enough... this happens with Shape object only i.e. If I add one Shape and then 17 nulls to the list then this wont happen until 17 more Shape objects are added. Does anyone has an idea why it happens after the count reaches 18? I thought it might be something with the List's default capacity. Something like relocating the references during which they get released so I initialized it with a capacity of 1000 but still no luck. Plus, reading optparse.py shows OptionGroup is there, so that adds to the confusion. I bet it will take less than 1 minute for someone to spot my error. For that I'll only add proper tags and / or modify the title later on. :)

• Simple Enterprise Library console application refuses to compile

  I just downloaded and installed Microsoft Enterprise Library 5.0. I fired up VS 2010 to play with EL 5 and created a very simple console application. However, it would not compile. I got the following error: The type or namespace name 'Data' does not exist in the namespace 'Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary' (are you missing an assembly reference?) I added Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Common, Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Data, and Microsoft.Practices.Unity references to my project. I believe that MS needs to acknowledge that most people are using the CCR in issolation from the DSS and Robotics Studio. • Entity Framework 4 overwrite Equals and GetHashCode of an own class property

  Hi, I’m using Visual Studio 2010 with .NET 4 and Entity Framework 4. I’m working with POCO Classes and not the EF4 Generator. I need to overwrite the Equals() and GetHashCode() Method but that doesn’t really work. Thought it’s something everybody does but I don’t find anything about the problem Online. When I write my own Classes and Equals Method, I use Equals() of property’s, witch need to be loaded by EF to be filled. Like this: public class Item { public virtual int Id { get; set; } public virtual String Name { get; set; } public virtual List<UserItem> UserItems { get; set; } public virtual ItemType ItemType { get; set; } public override bool Equals(object obj) { Item item = obj as Item; if (obj == null) { return false; } return item.Name.Equals(this.Name) && item.ItemType.Equals(this.ItemType); } public override int GetHashCode() { return this.Name.GetHashCode() ^ this.ItemType.GetHashCode(); } } That Code doesn’t work, the problems are in Equals and GetHashCode where I try to get HashCode or Equal from “ItemType” . Every time I get a NullRefernceException if I try to get data by Linq2Entites. A dirty way to fix it, is to capture the NullReferenceException and return false (by Equals) and return base.GetHashCode() (by GethashCode) but I hope there is a better way to fix this problem. • What's next for all of these Microsoft "overlapping" and "enhanced" products ?

  Recently I attended a road show, organised by MS Gold Partner company in the UK. The products discussed were: SharePoint server (2010 and 2007), Exchange server, Office Communication Server 2007, Exchange hosted services Office Live meeting, Office Communicator, System Center Configuration Manager and Operation Manager, VMware, Windows 7 etc. As Microsoft claims the enhancement in the each product against higher version, I felt that clients are not much interested in all these details. For example Office Communicator, surely they have improved a lot the product and first site all said 'WOW' great product, but nobody wish to pay money for all these extra features. Some argued, they are bogged down by all these increased number of menus. They don't need soft call feature included with mobile call. It apply for all other products as well such as MS office (next what 2 ribbons ?), windows OS and many more. Indeed there must be good features in all these products, but is it worth to spend money and time to update the older system ? Also sometimes these feature will decrease the productivity instead increase it. *So do you think what ever enhancement MS is doing in the products is only for selling purpose, not a real use ?? and I think also keep the developer busy learning the new tools and features. * I am sure some some people here will argue that some people need this sort of features. But I am not talking about NASA or MI5 guys. I am talking of usual businesses and joe public. Any ideas welcome.

• Cookie not renewing/overwriting in IE

  I have a weird quirk with cookies in IE. When a user logs into the site, I'm generating a new session id and hence need to overwrite the cookie. The flow is basically: Client goes to https://secure.example.com/users/login page, automatically receiving a session id Client POSTs login credentials to same address Client receives the following headers together with a 302 redirect to https://secure.example.com/users/mypage: CAKEPHP=deleted; expires=Sun, 05-Apr-2009 04:50:35 GMT; path=/ CAKEPHP=98hnIO23...; expires=Mon, 12 Apr 2010 04:50:36 GMT; path=/; secure Client is supposed to visit https://secure.example.com/users/mypage, presenting the new session id. This works in all browsers, except IE (tested in 7 & 8). IE retains the old, unauthenticated session id, and is redirected back to the login page. It works on my local test environment (using a self-signed certificate at https://localhost:8443/...), but not on the live server. I'm using CakePHP and simply issue a $this->Session->renew(), which produces the above cookie headers. Any ideas how to get IE to accept the new cookie?

• Dynamic Linq Library Guid exceptions

  I am having a problem with the Dynamic Linq Library. I get a the following error "ParserException was unhandled by user code ')" or ','". I have a Dicitionary and I want to create a query based on this dictionary. So I loop through my dictionary and append to a string builder "PersonId = (GUID FROM DICTIONARY). I think the problem is were I append to PersonId for some reason I can't seem to convert my string guid to a Guid so the dynamic library don't crash. I have tried this to convert my string guid to a guid, but no luck. query.Append("(PersonId = Guid(" + person.Key + ")"); query.Append("(PersonId = " + person.Key + ")"); I am using VS 2010 RTM and RIA Services as well as the Entity Framework 4. //This is the loop I use foreach (KeyValuePair<Guid, PersonDetails> person in personsDetails) { if ((person.Value as PersonDetails).IsExchangeChecked) { query.Append("(PersonId = Guid.Parse(" + person.Key + ")"); } } //Domain service call var query = this.ObjectContext.Persons.Where(DynamicExpression.ParseLambda<Person, bool>(persons)); Please help, and if you know of a better way of doing this I am open to suggestions.

• Strange behaviour with GregorianCalendar

  I just encountered a strange behaviour with the GregorianCalendar class, and I was wondering if I really was doing something bad. This only appends when the initialization date's month has an actualMaximum bigger than the month I'm going to set the calendar to. Here is the example code : // today is 2010/05/31 GregorianCalendar cal = new GregorianCalendar(); cal.set(Calendar.YEAR, 2010); cal.set(Calendar.MONTH, 1); // FEBRUARY cal.set(Calendar.DAY_OF_MONTH, cal.getActualMaximum(Calendar.DAY_OF_MONTH)); cal.set(Calendar.HOUR_OF_DAY, cal.getActualMaximum(Calendar.HOUR_OF_DAY)); cal.set(Calendar.MINUTE, cal.getActualMaximum(Calendar.MINUTE)); cal.set(Calendar.SECOND, cal.getActualMaximum(Calendar.SECOND)); cal.set(Calendar.MILLISECOND, cal.getActualMaximum(Calendar.MILLISECOND)); return cal.getTime(); // => 2010/03/03, wtf I know the problem is caused by the fact that the calendar initialization date is a 31 day month ( may ), which mess with the month set to february (28 days). The fix is easy ( just set day_of_month to 1 before setting year and month ), but I was wondering is this really was the wanted behaviour. Any thoughts ?

• oData/ADO.NET Data Services using LINQ-to-SQL with a decryption layer

  I have written an application using LINQ-to-SQL that submits a web form into a database. I absact the LINQ-to-SQL away using a Repository pattern. This repository has the basic methods: Get(), Save(), etc. As a development of the project, I needed to encrypt certain fields in the form. This was trivial, as I just added the encryption calls to the Get(), Save() methods in the Repository. Now, I want to put an oData layer over it, to allow RESTful extraction from MS Excel 2010 (when it comes out). I have this working, after a few stumbles on useless error messages, etc. However, obviously, those encrypted fields are still encrypted. My repository pattern would have decrypted these for me. As far as I know, I have to directly bind my oData service to the LINQ-to-SQL context for the schema, etc. to work - unless I enter a whole world of pain (any URLs appreciated). Is there a way I can insert my encryption/decryption layer into the request so decryption is done "on the fly"? I looked at the OnStartProcessingRequest() overload of DataService but this doesn't seem that useful.
